After talking to personal trainers, coaches and yogis for this new year fitness issue, one common thread ran through our conversations. Having FUN.

is community for commiseration and lots of laughter. An emphasis on finding a fitness path that leads us to that happy place is part of the plan for personal trainers and coaches who truly understand what makes us tick. And sweat.  If you’re like me, you’ll think harder about getting in shape this month and I am thrilled to bring you a quickie workout (the best kind) that will kick it into high gear. It’s about feeling good and looking good (but mostly feeling good). Our magazine is looking good this month, don’t you think? Our Lifestyle Publications family is now 50+ strong, with magazines across the country, from Del Mar, California, (where one of our former writers, Ruksana Hussain, is now at the helm as editor) to

Hartford, Connecticut, and Rochester, Michigan, down to Birmingham, Alabama. Like your magazine, each Lifestyle Publications book has its own personality reflecting its readers. But, all are communities that value family, local businesses and giving back. We hope you like the new look and continue to encourage you to submit story ideas about your neighbors who are working hard to make our community special. Make it your new year’s resolution to send me a note about a new business, charity or friend who is doing something remarkable. I know they are out there!

PRIMROSE GIVES More than 40 pre-Kindergarten and after-school

children

from

Primrose

School of Dunwoody saw the fruits of their labor as they unloaded grocery purchases and donated them to the Community Assistance Center of Sandy Springs during the hoiday season. Food items were purchased with money the children earned for performing household chores at home, and they were donated to help families in need this holiday season, Recently, students combined (and learned to count) their earnings, created a detailed shopping list and hit the aisles at Dunwoody Hall Shopping Center. As part of the school’s Caring and Giving program, this event helps students understand the value of generosity while creating a hands-on approach to math, nutrition and planning skills. In addition to purchasing food items, Primrose Dunwoody also collected cans for over two weeks in November. The cans collected at school and purchased totaled 1,813. Congratulations kids!

NUTRITION AND SUSTAINABILITY “The generous donations of fresh produce, dairy, deli, bakery, proteins and frozen prepared food by our Food Donors enables our Partner Agencies to supplement their food programs with healthy alternatives. In addition, redirecting surplus food reduces food waste and helps our Food Donors to be more sustainable,” notes Labriola. “Currently, we are able to help provide meals for more than 4,300 people every day.” EXPANDING TO MEET A GROWING NEED Every day, many people are forced to make tough choices between buying food or paying for housing, utilities, medicines, and transportation. Living with limited means often leads to choosing inexpensive, highly processed foods that result in chronic health conditions, including diabetes and obesity. In 2016, SHA rescued more than 1,350,000 pounds of mostly perishable food from grocery chains, large retailers, corporate dining rooms, school cafeterias, restaurants and farmers markets. By the end of this year, SHA is on track to rescue 1.5 million pounds of food, enough for some 1,250,000 meals.  To learn more about becoming a Food Donor, Partner Agency, volunteer or financial supporter, please visit SecondHelpingsAtlanta.org .

INSTRUCTIONS Toss spring mix and quinoa in dressing. Place in large salad bowl. Garnish with peppers, edamame. We love Quinoa! Quinoa contains Iron. Iron helps keep our red blood cells healthy and is the basis of hemoglobin formation. Iron carries oxygen from one cell to another and supplies oxygen to our muscles to aid in their contraction. Iron also increases brain function because the brain takes in about 20% of our blood oxygen. There are many benefits of iron some more of which include neurotransmitter synthesis, regulation of body temperature, aids enzyme activity and energy metabolism.

“ What makes CrossFit so unique is that as soon as someone programming workouts sees a trend in their workouts, they know they need to be more varied in their style and types of workouts per formed!”

CROSSFIT

WITH GLENN DORRIS

CROSSFIT DUNWOODY The CrossFit model prides itself on "constantly varied functional movements performed at a high intensity." The core concept of CrossFit is that they are always changing and doing new workouts. Of the newest WODs in CrossFit recently, the equipment used or how that equipment is utilized has become a change. From dumbbells to CrossFit boxes, new styles of sleds, Assault Bikes, and more says Glenn Dorris of CrossFit Dunwoody.  Dorris says, “What makes CrossFit so unique is that as soon as someone programming workouts sees a trend in their workouts, they know they need to be more varied in their style and types of workouts performed!” At CrossFit Dunwoody, you’ll experience a community of likeminded individuals who work hard to achieve their fitness and health goals. If you’ve been nervous about trying out CrossFit, Dorris assures that “Our coaches are experienced, safety is our top priority, and no matter your level, we modify and tailor workouts to each individuals' needs.” Dorris is a former collegiate football player for Harvard University and a seasoned long-distance runner. CrossFit brings him back to his conditioning days on the field.   CrossFit Dunwoody opened in October 2017. It is located at 5525 Chamblee Dunwoody Road. CrossFitDunwoody.com CONTINUED >

WITH

BECKY NICKERSON

INFINITY YOGA You’ll find yoga studios across town, but Infinity Yoga offers a class you may

not find at other studios called “Yoga for Athletes.” The class focuses more on anatomy, mental endurance, and cross training for those athletes who run, swim, bike, or do CrossFit. For those that come to this class, the instructors generally expect you to have run or biked that day so the class is more of a recovery session. The classes focus on restoring the lower body by creating stability in the core, and for endurance athletes that spend so much time doing one specific motion like cycling or running, you'll end up working some muscles that you don't generally use and stretching the ones that you use too much. The instructors in the class often spend a portion of the class doing foam rolling, where you’ll put your body weight on thick foam cylinders to deeply massage your muscles. “We firmly believe yoga is for everyone and everyone is different and needs different things,” says co-founder of Infinity Yoga, Becky Nickerson. “Any athlete would benefit from this class! Who couldn't use more core stability and hips with more mobility? The class also works on breath efficiency and through this practice we're able to get "in the zone," a state of mind that cre-

That’s because instructors have to be certified to teach TRX so that you learn the proper form and technique of the movements. TRX helps build strength through functional training, using your body weight and adjustment of the bands to determine how challenging the exercises can and should be. These exercises can range from chest presses to squats, to one-legged lunges and suspended planks. Shelly Dalene, a personal trainer, recommends a class because “it commits you to a faster pace, so it’s going to increase the effectiveness of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.” Dalene believes TRX is for every range of fitness and even for rehab. “Everyone, regardless of age, seems to need a little help with their balance, so I help build the muscles in the legs, and throughout the core, which keeps the person physically able to stay on his/her feet.” Shelly is a personal trainer at The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. MADE POSSIBLE IN 15 MINUTES ARTICLE JORDANA KLEIN PHOTOGRAPHY OANA HOGREFE

SCULPTING SHOULDERS By stepping on the tubing and holding the handles at hips, start with lateral raises coming straight out towards your sides and work the middle part of the shoulders. Work the front shoulders by shifting to a front shoulder raise in front of your  torso. You can adjust the tubing any time to make the tension tougher or easier. 10 reps, twice. Or

"A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU..." or something like that!  Sometimes, the chaos of the holidays doesn’t slow down for months (insert satisfied and exhaused sigh here) But, what if you didn’t have to make time to drive to the gym anymore, set up a training session, or budget for that bulky gym equipment you end up storing in the garage? With Robert Dothard’s at-home or on-the-go workouts, you can make your exercise fit in with your schedule.  All you need? A room, a piece of furniture, yourself, a handy exercise and tubed resistance band with handles ($15-$20). Think you could make that happen? Time to test it out! These workouts are all about the complete body. Whether you’re stuck in the office, an avid golfer, or an on-the-go mommy, you can use these workouts to incorporate shoulders, abs, chest, and back muscles like never before! If you only have 15 minutes to spare, it’s time to set that stopwatch!

alternate lateral and front raises a total of 20 reps, twice.

2.

BEST CHEST Arrange the tubing around the desk or chair. Have a forward stance, either the left or right foot forward, shoulder width apart. Hold the tubing handles at chest height with tubing behind you and fairly sturdy. Begin doing front extensions / push straight out to work the chest and front shoulder. Can also shift to moving the arms at more of an angle, incorporating the core as well. Hint: act as if you’re squeezing a large yoga ball. It’s the same type of motion. Final option is to come from under your shoulders and start at the hips, and extend towards the chest (most difficult option). Step forward to increase tension. Do either 10 of each, twice. Or, pick your favorite and do three reps of 10.

3.

BACK WORK Arrange tubing around a desk or chair and have arms extended forward, holding the tubing in front of your hips. Begin by pulling the tubing handles in towards your hips and then extending forward again to feel the slight pull. These are also called standing lat rows. Your arms can then shift with palms facing the floor and begin extending towards the upper part of your outer thighs, keeping arms almost completely straight in the process (this is a harder version of the initial exercise.) Do either 10 of each, twice, or pick your favorite and do 10 reps, four times.

4.

ABS, ABS, ABS Connect tubing handles to the top of your feet with shoes on, having the tubing once again arranged around the arm or leg of a char / table. With knees bent and together, begin extending and then bringing towards your chin, moving up and back to feel your abs working. From this position, you can also remove the band and continue with crunches. Elevating the legs keeps the tension on the lower abs but also incorporates upper ab work.

FACE

FITNESS ARTICLE CARRIE WHITNEY

WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING FIT, YOUR BODY IS NOT THE ONLY AREA THAT CAN BE TIGHTENED AND TONED. With today’s aesthetic treatments, you can firm the skin of your face, neck, décolletage and virtually any other area. Without any surgery, these advanced treatments can tighten skin by encouraging collagen production, which will virtually turn back the clock on your aging process. Good skin begins with clean eating and a basic daily routine, according to Bessy Teague, medical esthetician at Creative Medspa in Atlanta, located within Creative Dentistry near the Perimeter. At a minimum, that means a good cleanse with a product that suits your skin type and a moisturizer packed with vitamins A, C and E.  “The evening cleanse is most important,” Teague says. This is because the body rejuvenates during rest. “You don’t have to wait until it’s time to go to bed. Do it before you get tired.” After cleansing and moisturizing in the morning, it is vital to add a sunscreen. “The sun is responsible for 85 percent of our aging,” Teague adds. Exfoliation, also based on skin type, helps rid the skin of dead cells and stimulate new cell formation. Monthly facials can boost circulation of the lymphatic system, which gets rid of debris. These habits can help to tighten your skin, but for more significant firming, consider the benefits of the OxyGeneo three-in-one facial, microcurrent and microneedling. OxyGeneo combines gentle exfoliation, skin oxygenation and nutrient infusion into one quick visit, and this relaxing treatment works well on all types of skin, from sensitive to tough. OxyGeneo stimulates collagen production, offers a

slight tightening effect and helps with fine lines and wrinkles.

IF YOU DREAM IT, WE CAN BUILD IT.

“It gives you a really nice glow,” Teague says, which makes it a good choice before an important event. There is no downtime at all. Another pre-event treatment, microcurrent is sometimes referred to as a non-surgical facelift. This technology exercises and energizes muscles by using microcurrent to mimic the body’s own energy, which revives the cells. The currents re-educate muscles to lift and tone the skin thanks to increased protein synthesis and boosted collagen production. “It’s like taking your face to the gym,” Teague explains. While microcurrent offers immediate results, a series of treatments will cause muscle memory to kick in, and microcurrent can lift jowls and cheeks. Beneficial on its own, microcurrent is also a great complement to Botox injections

because it keeps muscles strong and plump, while Botox relaxes them. For an overhaul of your skin’s fitness, microneedling treatments promote collagen and stimulate elastin. These are the substances that provide skin with its firmness and strength. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, works by breaking down tissue so that new tissue can be created. The benefits continue for up to six months following treatment as skin thickness increases. This minimally invasive treatment with little to no downtime can firm lax skin, decrease the appearance of lines and wrinkles, lead to smaller pores, improve acne, smooth an uneven skin tone and minimize scars and stretch marks.  “It can help promote over 400 percent more collagen product and elastin,” Teague says. Following a microneedling treatment, nutrients help repair the injured cells. “You need to feed your  skin  the vitamins that it needs to recover,” Teague says. “Proper nutrition combined with microneedling is going to get you the best results.”  Next time you workout, think about giving your skin a firming boost, too. With the right skincare and collagen-stimulating treat-

Get Out ! HERITAGE SANDY SPRINGS (HSS) IS A COMMUNITY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT HOSTS NUMEROUS FREE AND LOW-COST EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, FROM OUTDOOR CONCERTS AND FESTIVALS TO A FARMERS MARKET AND MORE. In the spring of 2017, HSS began looking for other activities that would increase participation and enrichment. At that time, there were not any local guided hikes or an official “recreation club” in Sandy Springs. This concept was not only intriguing to those involved with the organization, but it was a perfect fit with existing community initiatives at Heritage Sandy Springs. Furthermore, a very dedicated volunteer was willing to take the lead on this new program. So, in June of 2017, the Heritage Sandy Springs Outdoors Club (HSSOC) officially launched. Not only does the HSSOC provide free membership, but also complimentary guide-led hikes in our 16
