Cheers! OCTOBER 2017

P

erimeter North Lifestyle is proud to be a sponsor again for Polo in the Pines, a two-day festival honoring cancer survivors among us and raising funds for much-needed research while celebrating the great sport of polo here in the green Atlanta fields. When our lifestyle guru Sean O'Keefe came to us three years ago and suggested we collaborate with the PIP planners as media partner, we leaped at the opportunity to contribute, in some small way. This month, I'll dust off my fanciest hat (that is, Darce Richardson, our associate publisher will dust off an extra hat for me) and we will all join the fun October 7 and 8. While Saturday's event is a sit-down dinner (tickets still available), Sunday's brunch is a family-affair with bites from some of our favorite chefs and a more casual flair. Please join us in fighting cancer nearby!

n the picturesque North Carolina mountains sits a town from the pages of a story book: Banner Elk. Every business boasts cottage

windows and rustic wood; industrial buildings are pleasantly absent from view. A mountain backdrop, and the friendly presence of locals, draw visitors from far and wide. Only five hours from Atlanta, it may become your favorite mountain escape. WHERE TO DINE

Banner Elk has the farm-to-table thing going on; dishes are trendy, but still hold to their roots. Dunn's Deli is a simple diner offering hearty breakfast bowls with French toast, sausage, eggs and cheese. The Perry House on the hill above the deli also belongs to the Dunn's, and breakfast is included in the stay. Bayou Smokehouse's Salad Evangeline represents Louisiana Cajun culture, while offering more contemporary ingredients like field greens, fried green tomatoes, smoked crackers, crawfish and shrimp accented with rémoulade. It's modern, farm fresh and Cajun at its best.  Nicole Palazzo displays generations of culinary mastery at Chef's Table, recently merging from sushi to an upscale farm-to-table menu. North Carolina trout with caper lemon butter and locally sourced root veggies for a refreshing beet salad with field greens, shaved onions, fried goat cheese and toasted pine nuts are great depictions of culinarily rich Banner Elk.Palazzo can be found cooking up Italian favorites during the day, at Sorrento's Bistro. The family recipe crab cake with lobster cream sauce and veggies is mostly delicious chunks of crab, with the slightest bit of crunch and seasoning on the outer edges. Stonewalls has been a staple in the community for years, but just revamped its classic menu. Prime rib is still the melt-in-your-mouth house special, and some of the best, most tender scallops you'll ever taste are sometimes featured, with a berry-based sauce.  Banner Elk Cafe offers a versatile two-menu spread from wraps, salads and seafood, to amazing sides like the pasta salad. With its vast selection, families with picky eaters can find refuge here. BOOZE WITH VIEWS

Beech Mountain Resort's Skybar is a short chair lift ride away, at 5506' elevation. Craft beer can be enjoyed from the bar, which is inside a yurt with glass walls for a panoramic view of the Appalachian Mountains.

at the Historical Banner Elk School, visitors can see a live spectacle. The groundwork for theater was laid by Lees-McRae, a college with a strong influence among the community. Lees-McRae Summer Theater puts on exciting musicals, like Legally Blonde, through the warmer months. Apple Hill Farm opened to the public in 2006 and remains a Banner Elk favorite. It's situated well off the beaten path, but worth the journey to see an array of animals such as donkeys, horses, chickens, and yes, adorable alpacas. Their store offers socks, yarn and other fun stuff woven from Apple Hill alpaca wool. "People just fall in love with alpacas," says Lee Rankin, owner. Rankin works to make the experience educational while providing a deep connection to animals.  Banner Elk is built around nature, and the family can learn about native animals through  the Dan and Dianne May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Each year, more than 1,500 animals such as birds, snakes, bobcats, and turtles are admitted for treatment, with

hen Johns Creek resident Retta Clark  walked into Sewell Appliance in Sandy Springs, she had no idea she would win a gorgeous new 36” Wolf

range cooktop. She was one of many Lifestyle Publications readers who entered the giveaway just by stopping in to discuss kitchen renovation plans. Clark loves to cook. It has been a source of pride and joy for her, even more so

after the death of her beloved husband of 36 years in 2016. Her kitchen had always been the gathering spot for friends, family and neighbors. And now her wonderful new professional Wolf range helps her continue this coveted role. “I love it,” Clark exclaimed. ”I've never won anything before so this was a total surprise. I'm artistic and I love creating things. I have a real good time cooking,” she says. The crew at Sewell are sharing the latest design and technologies with readers like Clark and have helped many of them to create the kitchens of their dreams. Sewell salesperson Tom Styer assisted Clark in picking out the appliances for her project. She was extremely complimentary toward their whole team. “The people there were so nice and helpful,” Clark says. Builder Specialties, which owns Sewell Appliance, provides better home solutions including appliances throughout the South. For this contest, they teamed up with their counterparts at Sub-Zero and Wolf. Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are known for their legendary professional heritage, power and finesse as well as precise cooking control. They help users enjoy more adventurous, satisfying cooking and they often become iconic centerpieces. For 80+ years, these appliances have been the choice of professionals. They have now become a favorite of discerning home cooks everywhere, including Retta Clark in Johns Creek, Georgia. Rob Maxam, vice president of sales for Sub Zero Group Southeast, was thrilled to hear about the outcome of the contest. “We wanted to run a contest to create excitement about local kitchen remodel projects, Maxam explains. “We are a luxury premium brand, and we know that some people consider us out of range for their budget. We felt that it would be fun to offer up a chance to work with a Lifestyle magazine reader and complete their project, regardless of size or budget, with the best name in cooking appliances. And that’s what we did!” Visit Sewell at 7455 Throwbridge Rd. SewellAppliance.com

or just over 5 years, Evan Hodge has been competing in Special Olympics Georgia. A member of Special Olympics Georgia Cobb County, the 28 year  old has participated in Special Olympics Georgia’s State Games such as State

Summer Games, State Fall Games, State Winter Games and the State Masters Bowling Tournament. In addition to participating in multiple competitions, the multi-med-

alist has competed and excels in more than one sport. On this athlete’s resume, you will find bocce, bowling, volleyball, and kayaking listed as sports in which he has excelled. This past March, he competed in Alpine Skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria, bringing the silver medal back home to the United States. Like many athletes, Evan has gained a community full of lifelong friends and habits for a healthy lifestyle. In addition, Evan has also learned skills and gained the confidence to live an independent lifestyle. Because of his participation in Special Olympics Georgia, Evan gained the confidence to pursue higher education, graduating from Chattahoochee Technical College with an associate’s degree and has been able to apply that education to a career he holds with Publix Supermarkets. “Special Olympics changed my life. Not only do I view myself as an individual and competitor, but I have so many people I can call friends.” said Evan. Perimeter North wishes Evan more successes and triumphs. Go Evan!

S

ometimes a single conversation can change your life’s purpose. That was certainly the case for Polo in the Pines founder Tina Fowler. In 2012, Tina was at

Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center with her mother, Sharon Knight, for treatment of leiomyosarcoma—a cancer Sharon had been battling for 20+ years. That’s 20 years of motherhood, birthdays, holidays and life laced with treatments, surgeries, fears and questions. While the journey was often challenging, Sharon always found the bright side, proclaiming, “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into a positive.” It was that day that doctors stressed the importance of research as they searched for a cure. Inspired by her mother’s positivity, Tina made the choice to find joy while working to fund cancer research that could impact countless families facing the same battle. With her heart of gold, Tina forged ahead and launched what would ultimately become Polo in the Pines, an exciting polofilled weekend that would fund leiomyosarcoma research in honor of her mother. So, why polo? Not only do the stately horses, green pastures, and Pretty Woman polo attire provide the most amazing ambiance, but also the sport is historically philanthropic. Georgia's distinctive towering pines canopy Atlanta, giving it the nickname, 'City in a Forest,' providing a beautiful home for the Atlanta Regional Polo Center. Nestled in Vinings on an inviting stretch of the Chattahoochee River, the polo fields offer the perfect setting for supporters to enjoy a day of fun and philanthropy. This beautiful backdrop drew the lifelong equestrian, Tina, and connected her to Jolie Liston, the backbone of Atlanta’s thriving polo community--thus helping make the idea of a polo fundraiser a reality.

POLO IN THE ARTICLE MARGARET SULLIVAN | PHOTOGRAPHY LIZ ERIKSON

Now, five years later, patrons flock to the beautiful polo fields to sip champagne and enjoy polo matches, while funding critical cancer research. Each year, the organization celebrates a different honoree and benefits research for the honoree’s diagnosis. This year is uniquely honoring Saville and Lilia Sullivan, two sisters who were each diagnosed with different types of brain cancer in 2016. The weekend will kick off on Saturday, October 8, where the Sullivan sisters’ remarkable story will be told to a crowd of over 400 supporters with the soft sounds of polo mallets whacking and horses galloping in the background. To top off the weekend, Sunday’s Atlanta Brunch Festival will feature more polo matches, as some of the city’s top restaurants compete for the title of Atlanta “Best Brunch Bite.” All proceeds from the weekend will go directly to the Sharon McCollum Knight, Polo in the Pines Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation. The fund will directly benefit brain tumor research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in honor of the Sullivan sisters. In addition to all of their generous sponsors, Polo in the Pines is incredibly grateful to Jolie Liston and the Atlanta Regional Polo Center for making this incredible weekend possible. For more tickets and information, visit  PoloInThePines.com. Be sure to give a nod to all the generous sponsors, listed on the Editor's Page. 22

PINES MEET JOLIE LISTON

Jolie has played in every Polo in the Pines match, and you'll see her again this year. LP: How long have you been involved in polo in ATL? JL: I started playing polo in 1980. My father played and introduced me to the sport. LP: How has the polo scene changed in our state? JL: Polo in Atlanta has become more diverse. There are now four polo clubs in the Atlanta area and it’s not just for the very wealthy anymore. Anyone can participate at various levels. I also see a lot more women and kids playing than ever before. LP: Tell us about your horses. JL: There are too many to list for a short article! A few that are special to me are Alabama, Georgia, Pikachu and Snippet. They are the young horses I am currently training for polo. I rescued Alabama and Georgia from a kill pen in Louisiana, which makes training them even more special. Philomena is another special horse as she is one of my best. LP: Why is polo such an exciting sport to play?  JL: Different people will give you different answers to this question but for me, the relationship between the horse and rider makes polo exciting. We ask a lot of our horses and I consider them part of the team. Racing down the field at top speed chasing a little white ball can also be an adrenaline rush!  October 2017 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

et out of your ordinary burger-pizza-barbecue rut! Whether it’s date night or girls night out, Eclipse di Luna

in Dunwoody is the place to be. It’s no wonder it’s consistently voted one of the top restaurants in Atlanta. Let the live Latin music offered nightly energize you as you nosh on authentic Spanish tapas and creative cocktails. Check out the patio for a more relaxed vibe or stay inside and experience the high-energy interactive experiences. And don’t leave your dancing shoes at home, there’s room to move!

TAPAS

The wonderful thing about tapas, or Spanish-style small

plates, is that you get to taste a little of everything (or a lot if you’d prefer). Ordering about three dishes per person is typically enough to satisfy most people for a meal. Feel free to start small though, and add to your order as the night goes on. Some favorites on the Eclipse di Luna Dunwoody menu include: • Gambas al Ajillo: sautéed shrimp and garlic with • Calabrese pepper • Queso Frito con Miel: fried goat cheese with caramelized onions and honey • Empanada de Pollo: Gaujillo roasted chicken with black beans, corn, fontina cheese in a pastry shell topped with Aji Amarillo crema • Paella del Dia: Traditional Spanish paella with peas, shrimp, squid, mussels, and Chorizo, with saffron calasparra rice. (Allow 35 to 40 minutes for preparation.) • Chocolate Turtle cake: dense brownie topped with caramel, chocolate and pecans

Eclipse di Luna is more than just a place to grab a bite to eat. It’s a restaurant where you can linger and people watch. You can tap your toes to the enthusiastic music or ditch your inhibitions and show off your best salsa dancing. The staff understands how to walk the fine line between excellent service and unobtrusiveness. Eclipse di Luna is located at in the Perimeter area at 4505 Ashford Dunwoody Rd NE in Atlanta. {You can also visit their other location in Buckhead’s Miami Circle if you’re headed ITP.) 28

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | October 2017

The only thing better than tapas is inexpensive tapas. Eclipse di Luna offers half-off tapas and well drinks from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They also serve a tapas-style brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays featuring live music. They also have bottomless mimosas and sangria, and half-off bottles of wine beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tell them we sent you!
