For any young man, it is essential to have a great male influence in his life. Our boys are very blessed to have such an incredible role model for a father. My husband always says, “I’m raising men.” With that, he leads by example on being healthy, strong, independent and respectful, all while reminding them to stay humble, kind, affectionate and happy. His overall message to them is “Be the right guy, and everything else will fall into place." Eric, Happy Father’s Day! You are an exceptional husband and father to our boys. We love you! This month is our “Gents” issue, where we get to celebrate the gentlemen of our community. The best part of this is sharing great stories about the influential and exemplary men who surround us.

TIFUL BIRDS. With its maps and descriptions, it is the ideal guide for beginner and experienced birders who want to enjoy some of the best bird watching in Arizona. Babbitt has been interested in birds since a young child and has been very active in the Audubon Society, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the conservation of birds and other wildlife. "I did a great deal of writing about birds in magazines and environmental newspapers and was a contributor to the Birds of Maricopa County Book  1997 and 2017 editions. When I retired, it was a logical extension to undertake writing a book about birds," he says. Babbitt consulted with and used the expertise of a plethora of birding friends. He felt asking those who were skilled with birding would add authenticity to the piece. From tour group leaders and those in university academic positions, Babbitt pulled from many who have inspired him along the way. "The book covers a lot of ground and is exclusively about Arizona birds and birding, and what I love about it  is it takes birders on a tour through the four seasons of the year and explains the different facets of bird migration and where to go to view them. The book is geared toward helping people appreciate birds and the role they play; the things they do for us is amazing. I even discuss three ways to reintroduce species such as the California condor, thick-billed parrot and the masked bobwhite, so it's not your standard field guide."

Outrageous Success IT WAS MAY 2008, AND FRANKIE MUNIZ WAS IN LOS ANGELES STANDING IN LINE TO PURCHASE A GRILL FOR HIS HOME WHEN A RANDOM THOUGHT STRUCK HIM. “Wait, before I buy this, do I want to live in Scottsdale?” So the actor, best known for his role in the television series Malcolm in the Middle, left the line and hopped in his car that afternoon for an impromptu road trip. “I’d been here before for events and things, and there was always just something about Scottsdale and Phoenix that I really liked. … So, I left the line, got in my car, I drove here, I found my house that day. … I saw an open house sign, I went in, I thought, ‘I love it,’ and I bought it.” The sale closed in eight days. Since then, Frankie has made the Valley his home. “I really don’t plan on [leaving],” he says. “When I think of all the places I could live or want to live, nowhere tops here. I’ve traveled all over, but I love it here. I’m so happy here.”

ACTOR FRANKIE MUNIZ ON HIS SPONTANEOUS MOVE TO THE VALLEY AND NEW OWNERSHIP OF OUTRAGEOUS OLIVE OILS & VINEGARS

A SPONTANEOUS NEW VENTURE In addition to acting, Frankie’s life has also been filled with pursuing other passions, including racing cars and drumming in a band. But his latest career venture? It was as spontaneous as his move to the Valley.

“We’re open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but I’d say we were here 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.!” he says. The couple has renovated the store and brought in new products. They interact with customers. They deal with the logistics of running a store. They also hand-bottle everything—some-

OUTRAGEOUS SUCCESS

(CON TI N U ED)

“I could drink it out of the bottle it’s so good!” he says. As for the future of the store, the couple has big plans—but they’re keeping them under wraps. DEDICATING HIMSELF TO HIS PURSUITS Being the owner of a retail store is very different than many of his past careers. For Frankie, though, that’s part of the draw. “My life has been pretty interesting in that I don’t sit back. Whenever I have an idea, I go for it; I do it. Some things I’ve been pretty successful with, and some things I’ve learned a hard lesson, but that’s part of life and part of the fun of it. No one can ever say my life is boring, that’s for sure!” Whether it’s been acting, racing or drumming, Frankie always pursues his interests with a dedicated passion and a strong work ethic. “Whenever I’ve done anything, I’ve dedicated everything to what I’m doing,” he explains. “When I was acting, that was my world. When I played in the drums in the band, that’s all I thought about. Whatever I was doing, that was my life. I’ve liked everything I’ve done.” GIVING BACK When he’s not at the store, Frankie’s calendar includes  golfing  as well as attending charity events, which is how he helps to give back. Some of his favorite charities include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Best Buddies and Celebrity Fight Night. “I just like to do whatever I can, because there are so many organizations that need help,” he explains. “I’m just me, but if me showing up or donating something like a script helps, that’s amazing and I’m all about it. I try!” PUTTING DOWN ROOTS Reflecting back on his life, Frankie feels happy with where it’s taken him. He’s happy here, and the Valley has been good to him. “I’ve been here a long time, and I definitely consider the Valley my home,” he says. “I love being part of the community and owning a small business in the community, and I hope people come in and check it out. When you come in, you’re supporting a real local business, and that’s fun.” HIS BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE Frankie’s many careers and successes have had one common thread: he always puts in the work and gives everything his all. And that, he says, is what it takes. “I’ve just been really fortunate in my life to be able to do what I wanted, but the biggest thing is that to do what you want to do, nothing is easy. You have to work hard for it, and you can’t give up. I know that’s cliché, but it’s true. Everything that I’ve done, like I said, I’ve dedicated myself to 100%. “Do whatever you can to continue to learn and grow, and sometimes you think that you’re going down a wrong path, but it turns out to be the best thing that ever happened.” 26

NEW LIFE JUICE AND WELLNESS UNIQUE OPTIONS FOR NATURAL HEALTH BENEFITS ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY WHITNEY DINOTA

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | June 2019

BOB WORLEY, FOUNDER OF NEW LIFE JUICE AND WELLNESS, WENT ON A NATURAL HEALTH JOURNEY AFTER A HORRIFIC ACCIDENT IN 2016. “I was electrocuted off a 14-foot ladder and put through the gambit of surgeries, physical therapy, cortisone shots, pain pills and anti-inflammatory drugs. As a result, I was diagnosed with diverticulosis, and instead of just taking another pill, I decided enough was enough,” he says. Bob changed his regime, introducing a plant-based diet, including juicing. He lost weight and felt great. A visit to his location means education as well as nutritionally sound products. Try the Hippie Juice, an Attitude Adjustment or Veggie Verde, all with properties to assist with inflammation coupled with several other health benefits.

“A VISIT TO NEW LIFE JUICE AND WELLNESS IS ABOUT EDUCATING MY CLIENTS SO THEY CAN TAKE THAT KNOWLEDGE HOME AND MAKE IT WORK FOR THEM. LEARNING ABOUT HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND OFFERING AN ARRAY OF PRODUCTS WITH IMMENSE HEALTH BENEFITS MEANS IT’S A ONE-STOP SHOP FOR THEM. THEY DON’T HAVE TO GO TO SEVERAL PLACES TO BE HEALTHY. WE EVEN OFFER WORKSHOPS TO TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT NUTRITION AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH. YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF WITH DIET AND NATURAL WAYS OF HEALING.”

THE 2019 MCLAREN 570S SPIDER TRULY DELIVERS THE ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. This undeniably brought me to my roots. My late grandfather, Bob Montana, was a race car driver who competed amongst racing legends including the great Bruce McLaren in the CanAm Circuit. The iconic McLaren Orange 2019 570S Spider is no doubt a head-turner with a smooth, aerodynamic body and a sleek, ultra-light folding hardtop that completely disappears when opening. Holding to its historic purpose, the vibrant McLaren Orange surely stands out. In McLaren’s 1960s racing days, he strategically designed this signature color for viewing on blackand-white televisions, making it easy for spectators to spot the car as a slightly different shade than the rest. The 2019 McLaren 570S Spider’s interior matches the magnificent outer body. It boasts black and McLaren Orange leather interior with a classy touch of textile headlining, tonal stitching and manual sports seats. The 7-inch touch screen monitor makes it easy to navigate the interior controls including Satellite SiriusXM, Bluetooth technology, iPod/iPhone integration, IRIS navigation and an audio system that kicks. The McLaren Twin-Turbo 570S Spider provides an unparalleled level of comfort for any driver without compromising its sportsmanship or powerful performance of a race car. It has a seven-speed transmission and three powertrain and transmission modes that you can set to your liking. Any of these user-friendly  settings allow this incredible vehicle to perform and drive like it’s on rails.

Last year, the company expanded into Beverly Hills, California, (there is also a satellite office in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas). Erik’s dream job? To design an opera house—and then also design a set for a major opera to be performed in that opera house. “I love making an impact on how people live, work and play,” he says. GOLF ROOM One of the new home trends includes incorporating golf simulators into a home space. “They’ve finally gotten to the point now where they’re at the price point where you can integrate them into the home,” Erik says. One thing to note is that the room must have the height available to accommodate its use. In this room, the client wanted the design to be inspired by a 1950s diner and car racing, so it incorporates tufted leather around the base and stamped aluminum siding on the walls. “There’s actually a secret door from the garage into this room,” Erik shares. “So you can actually drive your car into the space, have a drink, and play on your favorite golf course.” GUITAR ROOM PHX Architecture built this room with a special lighting design that was created to highlight the owner’s collection of signed guitars. The door is an authentic safe vault door, and a combination is needed to open it. Leathered black Venetian plaster decorates the walls, and the entire room itself was built in block so that it’s completely fireproof. “We don’t get to do rooms like these very often,” Erik says. “It takes a special client with a special need to display all these really priceless pieces. It’s just fun to be able to come up with these cool ideas and fun spaces.” June 2019 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

OWNERS TUCKER WOODBURY AND JIM RILEY TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR PERFECT ALL-OCCASION HANGOUT

42

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | June 2019

THE VIG IS AN UPSCALE NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANT THAT APPEALS TO ALL WITH HAPPY HOUR, LAWN GAMES, LARGE PATIOS, BRUNCH AND AN ECLECTIC MENU. The historic feel and architectural elements, housed in an all-encompassing atmosphere, is as intentional as it comes. Founders Tucker Woodbury and Jim Riley have built this dream with purpose and were inspired by its neighborhood at 40th Street and Indian School. "Fourteen years ago, I was driving home from work and passed by a sad building with a for lease sign in front of it. It was the old Wrong Number Lounge, a quintessential dive that had been there for years but had shut down. I had dreamed of opening a spot that felt comfortable and welcoming ... something unpretentious but still upscale enough that my Arcadia friends and neighbors would feel at home in," Tucker says.   So the VIG was born from a vision of opening such a space, with a tavern feel and an elevated importance placed on dining, libations and enough interactive entertainment to last throughout a meal, happy hour and far into the evening. Tucker designed the space to pay homage to its historic architecture, adaptably using the building as it was and repurposing instead of tearing it down. "Our restaurants have a soul. It might have been a bar or a bank, but it has history."  Yearning for a partner in this investment, Tucker was introduced to Jim Riley at a country club swim meet. "He was a neighborhood guy like myself and experienced in the business ... having operated the Blue Moose at the same time I was running the Rockin’ Horse. So, two guys who were once competitors but didn't really know each other became business partners a couple of days later." This venture has been so rewarding because I love seeing things click. We feel what makes people repeat customers to the VIG is in the details—from the music and lighting to the quality of the food, it's a complete vibe that resonates with people. They enjoy themselves without trying too hard." CONTINUED >

Bennett & Bubbles and the VIG Pad Thai The Bennet & Bubbles counters the spicy with a little sweet and is made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, hibiscus syrup, rhubarb bitters, lemon and sparkling wine. The pad thai is a mix of spicy tamarind sauce, rice noodles, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, green onion, peanuts and lime.

"I HAD BEEN IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS FOR 20 YEARS AND WANTED A DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITY. THIS ENDED UP BEING IT. YOU CAN HAVE A GREAT BUSINESS, BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE A RESTAURANT FEEL HOMEY WITH AN EFFORTLESS COMFORT LEVEL SO CUSTOMERS COME BACK TIME AND TIME AGAIN."

The Takes Two to Mango and VIG Burger This colorful drink combines Herradura Blanco Tequila, Ancho Reyes, mango, lime and a salt rim and goes well on a Guys' Night Out with a juicy VIG Burger complete with cheddar cheese, fried egg, smashed avocado, tomato, jalapeños and sweet pickle on an aioli brioche bun

"WHEN WE OPENED 15 YEARS AGO, WE’D SEE ON NEIGHBORHOOD FLYERS ‘THIS AREA IS WALKABLE TO THE VIG.’ AND I KNEW WE’D ARRIVED. PEOPLE WANT TO STAY NEARBY WHEN THEY DINE OUT, AND WHEN YOU HAVE GREAT DINING CHOICES, IT HELPS THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S AMBIANCE AND FEEL." 44
