RECOVERY RECOVERY

Every new year brings renewed motivation to improve

health by increasing fitness activities and reducing calories. HYPOXI Senior Marketing Director Judi Merrick, who is also a certified personal trainer, notes a critical element often missing from these programs is recovery. At its core, recovery methods help the body to rest, repair and return to a normalized state. While HYPOXI was developed to accelerate fat loss in targeted areas, it can also be used as a form of recovery due to its circulation-boosting benefits. Using patented vacuum and compression therapy, HYPOXI   is a training method that uses machines to naturally speed up weight loss in stubborn areas: stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks.  A HYPOXI workout involves biking at a moderate speed or walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes while the patented technology boosts circulation and promotes fat loss. On average, customers lose one pant size or dress size in as little as four weeks.  What sets HYPOXI apart from other fitness studios is this dual benefit of targeted fat loss and recovery.  “It’s no surprise the benefits of all recovery methods are gaining mainstream recognition," Judi says. "With increased awareness, availability, research and options, it is poised for continued growth in 2018 and beyond." 18

FOUR ROOM CONCEPT

MOST GYMS, OUR LAYOUT IS A MORE CUSTOM DESIGN, FOCUSED ON GIVING ANYONE THE PRECISE WORKOUT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.”

FOUR ROOM CONCEPT When you walk into BodyVision something is immediately clear: They have a colorful fitness concept that makes your routine foolproof. “While most customers are familiar with the large room concept at most gyms, our layout is a more custom design, focused on giving anyone the precise workout they are looking for,” owner Rob Warner says. BodyVision has four rooms that break down a fitness routine by color. Head to the blue room for treadmill work; the orange room for cable machines, dumbbells, rowers, resistance bands and strength training; the yellow room for kettlebells, benches, bands and TRX suspension training; and the green room, a full spin studio. “We wanted to incorporate effective and popular equipment, but break it up for ease and efficiency. Our full workouts are heart rate-based interval training with trainers coaching per room,” Rob says. “We work on a six-minute interval system, so if it’s a one-hour workout you’re looking for, you can go through ours twice in one session.” Videos of sets and reps are playing on television screens throughout the colored rooms, offering extra guidance and information needed. BodyVision has new challenges starting monthly, with the next challenge beginning January 15. Call today for a special deal when you mention this story.

ONLINE NUTRITION AND FITNESS COACHING

Health may be at the top of someone’s list, but a lack of guidance can hold him or her back from achieving goals. Having an online nutrition or fitness coach offers guidance, a custom plan and accountability with weekly check-ins. “Doing everything online allows me to work with clients no matter where they are. My clients also have access to text or call me anytime they have a question or need support—not just once a week at in-person sessions,” online nutrition and fitness coach Kari Burghardt says, adding that Fridays are scheduled weekly check-in days. Based on the results from the week, she makes adjustments for the following week. Nutrition was introduced to Kari at an early age. She suffered from an eating disorder at 14 and, after recovery, centered her day around nutrition. Kari also offers macro training and online workout plans through her home base at The Body Shop in Gilbert. “Working with an online coach opens the door for you to find someone you want to work with and not just whoever is available at your gym," Kari says. "Life is fast-paced, so being able to check in with your coach when it's convenient for you makes sticking to your nutrition and fitness plan so much easier.” DANCE FITNESS 20

”OUR CLASSES RANGE FROM CONTEMPORARY BALLET TO JAZZ TO HEELS CLASSES.”

DANCE FITNESS

Fitness comes in many forms, and often a person doesn’t fit the mold at a traditional fitness facility. Angel Castro, founder of Halo Movement Collective, created a space for those interested in the art form of dance as an outlet for fitness and self-expression. “We offer technical style dance classes geared toward professional and young dancers who aspire to become professionals," he says. "Our classes range from contemporary ballet to jazz to heels classes." Angel prides himself on providing professional-level training for those who aspire to be dancers. He gears his classes toward the serious dance enthusiast. “Our classes are not derived from dance— they are dance," he says. "It’s hard work, but we are also having fun. Dance takes discipline, and your goals here should be to find success at the form of dance you are interested in. It’s a rigorous workout." For the dance fitness novice, Castro encourages patience and forgiveness. “Figure out which classes you are drawn to and which you want to excel at," he says. "I tell my clients that they need to be themselves because everyone else is taken. If you figure out what works best for your body, you will quickly notice that dance will not only help tone and keep you active, it will also boost your confidence.” January 2018 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

This no-equipment-necessary circuit targets your legs, booty and core to turn them into lean, toned muscle. The five-exercise circuit is perfect for all levels of fitness. Aim for as many repetitions as you can within the allotted time and focus on good performance over repetitions. As you get stronger, you’ll be able to increase your repetitions and perhaps add a hand weight to increase the challenge. Use a kitchen timer or download an app to time your circuits.  Perform each of the five exercises for 50 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest in between exercises. Rest for up to one minute after completing the five exercises. Repeat the circuit two to four more times.

SQUAT TO STANDING ELBOW TO KNEE CRUNCH

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hands behind your head. Bend your knees and lower your hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Press through your heels and squeeze your glutes to stand back up, straightening the legs. Lift your right knee toward your chest and crunch left elbow to your right knee. Repeat the squat and crunch right elbow to left knee. Continue to squat and alternate knee to elbow crunch for the duration of the circuit.

AN EFFECTIVE RESOLUTIONREADY WORKOUT PLIE SQUAT TO SIDE LEG LIFT

Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and toes turned out laterally. Squat down, and as you stand up, extend a straight right leg out to the right. Repeat the plie squat and as you stand up, extend a straight left leg out to the left. Continue alternating leg lifts after each pile squat.  GLUTE BRIDGE TO REVERSE CRUNCH

Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet on the floor. Squeeze your glutes and press through your heels to lift your pelvis up to a bridge position. Lower onto your back, and then use your abs to curl your hips off the floor, knees toward your chest. Return your feet to the floor and repeat. KNEELING DONKEY KICK

From table position on your hands and knees, keep your right knee at a 90-degree angle and raise your leg behind you until your thigh is parallel to the floor, glutes engaged. Return to table position and repeat on left side. Continue alternating legs for each kick. SIDE PLANK LEG LIFT

Start in a side elbow plank on your left side, right hand on your hip or on the floor for support. Lift your right leg up until its parallel to the floor, just higher than your hip. Lower your right leg to meet your left and continue to lift and lower until the halfway mark in time. Switch to the other side halfway through. BRIGHT IDEA

The striking metal accents incorporated into the

full bar located inside the home add an eclectic look and handsome contrast to the contemporary background of the home. Kristin Hazen Design in cooperation with master builder John Schultz and his development team collaborated on this home for nearly four years. Rustic cabinetry, eye-catching artwork and custom architectural elements on the ceilings and in the lighting are also notable elements in and around the bar.

GET THE LOOK

Having an outdoor sanctuary was key in design-

ing this home. Perhaps most appealing are the hanging benches from wooden planking adorned with twinkling tea lights on the patio. Capturing this look in your own home is easy and affordable. A visit to Hayneedle.com will bring you many options in hanging benches. For a similar beachfront look, try the Belham Living Brighton Deep Seating 65-inch Porch Swing Bed for $379. You can add on the 11-Watt Outdoor Weatherproof String Light Set by Newhouse Lighting. These are sold at Home Depot for $43 per 48 feet. You can then complete the look with outdoor pillows to match any space at Wayfair.com ($30 a set) and a pergola with a roof for hanging. Several sites can step you through a DIY pergola install, or visit Lowes.com to view ready-made pergolas in several wood finishes.

Confessions of a Coach and Confidant KARI BURGHARDT, ONLINE NUTRITION AND FITNESS COACH BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE AND HUMOR

ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY TONY MARINELLA, TMP IMAGING

“I become such an integral part of my clients’ days that I get to hear the good, the bad and the ugly,” she says. “If a client is bloated, having women issues or feels, let’s say, stomach unrest while in the midst of their daily routine, fitness-related or otherwise, I hear about it.” That happens because she takes on more of a cheerleader role with her clients and tries to avoid just being their coach. She loves motivating clients through struggles and strives to pump them up rather than simply teach steps. Being a friend and trusted authority is a mix Kari takes seriously, so it becomes an easy and comfortable relationship; funny incidents come with the territory. She also admits that in her own home, the confessions keep coming.

"You would think my kids would be amazing eaters, with me being a nutrition coach," she says. "Nope. I WHILE FITNESS AND NUTRITION COACHING IS KARI BURGHARDT’S PASSION, SHE ADMITS THAT EVEN SHE HAS
