Buy vs. Rent After considering commercial space or an outbuilding on his property, Heatly discovered Garage Condos and was immediately impressed. He not only liked the idea of building equity, which a rental wouldn't provide, but found that purchasing a luxury work and storage space was a recent trend in bigger cities that hadn't been tapped into locally, until now. Garage Condos in Edmond offers 85 luxury, climate-controlled units in various sizes, plus 24-hour surveillance, gated entry and a clubhouse.

FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in OKC.Meet a few of them (and their four-legged friends) and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats on Page 42 so you can spoil your loyal companions. Cheers to another wonderful month ahead, O KC.We hope to see you around!

PolyLevel has high-capacity lifting strength with a typical lifting force ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 pounds per square foot. WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR OKC SINCE TAKING OFFICE AS OKLAHOMA CITY’S NEW

“EDUCATION

IS DEFINITELY THE THING THAT I’LL BE FOCUSED ON IN 2020.”

MAYOR, DAVID HOLT HAS FOCUSED ON FOUR KEY AREAS THAT HE SAYS WILL CONTINUE THE CITY’S CLIMB TOWARD GREATNESS. In April 2018, David Holt took office as Oklahoma City’s 36th mayor after being elected with 78.5% of the vote. Holt became the youngest mayor of Oklahoma City since 1923, the first Native American mayor of Oklahoma City and at the time of his election, the youngest mayor of a U.S. city with more than 500,000 residents. With a year under his belt, we talked to Mayor Holt about his priorities, his goals and what he plans for the future. With that in mind, Mayor Holt discussed four main areas—core services, quality of life, education and incorporating Oklahoma City’s diversity into decision making. BETTER STREETS, SAFER CITIES For Oklahoma City’s core services, Holt says the city leaders already made bold moves before he came into office, and his role now is to implement them and make

“IT’S REALLY GOING TO BE FOCUSED ON NEIGHBORHOOD NEEDS AND HUMAN NEEDS TO A GREAT EXTENT.”

sure people know they're happening. “In 2017, citizens passed the Better Streets, Safer Cities initiative that put $800 million just in the street repairs,” Mayor Holt says. “We have a very unique challenge in Oklahoma City. I talk about this a lot because I find a lot of people don't know, but we are 620 square miles, which means we are one of the five largest cities in the United States. By land mass, you can fit a Boston, Miami, Chicago, Washington, Philly and Manhattan inside the city limits.” Having a city with such a large footprint means that a comprehensive street repair program has certain challenges and takes time. “Lots of people reasonably have hopes and dreams for

“WE ARE A CITY THAT’S JUST TRANSITIONING IN EVERY WAY— DEMOGRAPHICALLY, GENERATIONALLY, POLITICALLY.”

certain amenities in Oklahoma City that just really don't work here unless you want to pay 10 times the taxes,” he says. “We're trying to create a more walkable lifestyle in the core of the city. But the perennial complaint has been streets. Because of the reality of how large we are, we've never had enough resources to keep up. So, hopefully, better streets makes a big difference.” Although Oklahoma City passed the $800 million initiative, Mayor Holt says many people still aren’t aware of it. In addition to street repairs, the Better Streets, Safer Cities initiative also saw the addition of 420 new police officers.

“THERE’S A WHOLE LOT MORE NOW THAT THE CITY OFFERS, AND WE NEED TO APPRECIATE IT.” CONTINUED >

QUALITY OF LIFE As Mayor Holt took office, the timing dictated that he would have to start the discussion for MAPS Four. The MAPS projects are citizen-funded sales tax initiatives designed to improve the quality of life in the city. The streets sales tax ends in March 2020, which means calling for a vote to continue the MAPS projects, keeping the sales tax the same by fall 2019. Agendas for the presentations about MAPS Four projects were released in June, and Mayor Holt says most of the projects are ideas the public has heard about already. “I wanted these public meetings in July and August where the opportunity would be had for all the things to be presented to the public. Our citizens think MAPS Four is just for a stadium and state fair arena, but there's actually a whole lot more to it,” Mayor Holt says. “It's really going to be focused on neighborhood needs and human needs to a great extent. That seems to be where the people's minds are at right now with issues like health and substance abuse and domestic violence and homelessness.” EDUCATION AND DIVERSITY Education is a concern for residents in Oklahoma City, and Mayor Holt says he plans to make that issue a priority in 2020. “In our system, we divorced the city from the school district. In fact, we have 24 school districts in that 620 square miles I described earlier,” Mayor Holt says. “I think that there's a lot of political capital that's held by city leadership to get the attention of the public and bring together the business community, the education leadership, the city leadership and the philanthropic leaders to come up with a unified vision moving forward for education. Education is definitely the thing of I'll be focused on in 2020.” Another ongoing initiative for Mayor Holt is incorporating the diversity of the city into decision making. “We are a city that's just transitioning in every way—demographically, generationally, politically. It is important for me to maintain the unity that we've had for so long. We have to manage that transition in a way that everybody feels like they have a seat at the table,” Mayor Holt says. “We have had 36 mayors, and all 36 came from northwest Oklahoma City. They were 35 white males and one white female. But we have a lot more diversity in Oklahoma City.” Mayor Holt says he can encourage more diversity on boards and commissions, focusing on ethnic, geographic, gender and age diversity to bring new voices into the conversation. “I want to use my platform to expose people in Oklahoma City to all the things that make Oklahoma City interesting, special and diverse. As geographically large as Oklahoma City is, you can cer-

tainly live inside your bubble and be around people who have your own life experience. But there's a whole lot more now that the city offers, and we need to appreciate it,” Mayor Holt says. August 2019 | OKC Lifestyle

DOG-FRIENDLY OKLAHOMA CITY DOG PARKS MAKE OKC A PLACE TO WAG ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLY RICHELLE AND PROVIDED

By Kimberly Richelle 26

OKC Lifestyle | August 2019

HAPPINESS IS WATCHING A DOG RUN AND PLAY AND JOIN YOU IN YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES. From taking walks at area parks, enjoying patio time together or just having a place to play, Oklahoma City is upping its dog game. DOG PARK DELIGHTS The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation has a perfect playground for pups at the PAW Park at  3303 NW Grand Blvd.  The park has 2 acres of off-leash play space with separated spaces for large dogs and small dogs. Water stations, a swimming pond and benches for human visitors round out to make this dog park a place to romp in the sun. PAW Park is operated and maintained in cooperation with  Partners for Animal Welfare of Oklahoma. This nonprofit, volunteer organization takes care of the park grounds and raises funds for park improvements. The PAW Park is such a favorite for dog lovers that it even gained national accolades. Dog Fancy, the world’s most widely read dog magazine, announced its picks for its annual America’s Best  Dog Parks contest, and PAW OK was ranked one of the top 13 in the United States. The Midtown Mutts Dog Park is one of the city's newest parks. Located at 407 W. Park Place, it is a smaller park designed to give area apartment pups a way to get out and play, but it's in easy walking distance to a lot of great dogfriendly patios and businesses. The Myriad Botanical Gardens in Oklahoma City also offers a small off-leash dog enclosure on the southeast side of the grounds. With the exception of PAW Park and Myriad Gardens Dog Park, all dogs must be on a leash when in city parks. No dogs are allowed at Martin Park Nature Center. So where are some other great dog parks in the OKC metro area? The Edmond Dog Park at Bickham-Rudkin Park, 379 E. 33rd St, is a 5-acre dog park with off-leash exercise. The park includes a separate area for small pets, benches, trees and lake access for doggy swimming. Wiggly Field Dog Park at Ray Trent Park in Del City, 4501 Tinker Diagonal, has  a separate small dog area  and lots of trees, turf, lights, play equipment, chairs, water fountains and paths. Let your dog try out some of the play equipment to get added exercise. Get some water fun at the Fred Quinn Happy Tails Dog Park at 8700 E. Reno Ave. in Midwest City. This dog park is a 3-acre off-leash dog park located in Joe B. Barnes Regional Park that features a nature-friendly design, plenty of shade, a dry-bed creek with crossing bridges, large open areas of grass for running and playing, a water feature pond for swimming and cooling off and three separated areas for dogs to explore. The park includes an area for small, older and disabled dogs to enjoy with trees, grassy running ground and mounds. A second area is for large dogs, and the third area features a concrete water pond. Keep an eye out because this park has room for future events such as doggy birthday parties, doggy weddings or other events to be held. No excuses! Grab the leash, and get out for some canine companionship in Oklahoma City.

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS HELP FAMILIES GET BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES, ASSISTANCE ARTICLE HEIDE BRANDES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

WANT TO LEND A HAND TO STUDENTS IN NEED THIS SCHOOL YEAR? Throughout the Oklahoma City metro, families are gearing up to get kids back to school, but for some families, the costs of supplies and new clothes can be a challenge. A simple donation of paper and notebooks, new coats and even backpacks can go a long way in helping all students be successful in school. Organizations throughout OKC are asking for help to provide for the city’s smallest residents. Numerous churches and businesses in Oklahoma County also spring on board to help needy families with school items, so there are plenty of ways to support the education of youth in the city. In addition, almost every school holds its own collections for school supplies. For working families struggling to pay bills and put food on the table, the list of supplies for their child’s school year can be daunting. If you’d like to help children in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, check out these worthy organizations.

DONORSCHOOSE.ORG DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that allows you to support public school teachers. Public school teachers list their classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project. You can search by location or project area of interest from art or math to field trips or specialized classroom equipment. DonorsChoose.org SUNBEAM FAMILY SERVICES Sunbeam Family Services Grandparents Raising Grandchildren  School Supply program serves approximately 500 children every year with backto-school backpacks full of pencils, pens, notebook paper, folders and much more. The GRG program provides support, education and resources for grandparents ages 55-plus who are raising grandchildren without parents in the home in Canadian, Cleveland, Oklahoma and Logan counties. SunbeamFamilyServices.org CITIZENS CARING FOR CHILDREN Citizens Caring for Children Resource Center at 730 W. Wilshire Creek Blvd.  Suite 112  usually holds an  annual event to provide foster children clothes and supplies needed for school. Each kid gets a personal shopping experience. CitizensCaringForChildren.org REGIONAL FOOD BANK The Regional Food Bank delivers pre-assembled food sacks and backpacks to participating schools at no cost to the school or the child.  The food bags contain approximately 10 different purchased foods designed to provide nutrition and calories for chronically hungry children over the weekend. RegionalFoodBank.org THE SALVATION ARMY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma will team up with Walmart this year to collect needed school supplies for families in need. In the past, TSA provided clothing as well for children needing new clothes or school uniforms. SalvationArmyOKC.org

ents, as well as for the students the decision was designed to help. A group of parents held a neighborhood meeting to discuss options. Private schools were already too crowded, so the parents decided to start their own school.

The growth was astronomical. The school eventually bought a decrepit field on Northwest 122nd Street and began the long process of moving and developing the campus in the mid-1970s. “That was big for Heritage Hall. For most of the past

is ‘to learn, to lead, to serve,’ and everything from curriculum to extracurricular activities to opportunities on campus all align with that mission statement." The Heritage Hall Independent Studies Program is one example of a unique curriculum designed to help students excel in college. The program allows students to choose a topic of interest in a variety of disciplines to study in depth. The program culminates in a formal assessment and presentation of learning to a panel of advisers. The Heritage Hall Explorer program allows students in grades 5 to 12 to embark on a week of personal interests that include on-campus offerings, local service and area explorations, foreign and domestic travel and more. Arts are also celebrated with coursework in dance, visual arts, debate and music. “In addition to our championship athletics, our debate team is nationally recognized, and we produce several National Merit Scholars each year," Lauren says. What really sets the college preparatory private school apart, however, is the sense of community, she says. “Everybody cares. The community cares. Parents are engaged, and the students want to be the best version of themselves they can be,” Lauren says. “Our students are very engaged and are supportive of one another. The teachers have close relationships with the students, and the students feel like their teachers care about them. Some of our teachers have been teaching here for 30, 40 years.” CELEBRATING 50 From Sept. 4 to 9, Heritage Hall will honor its 50-year history with several events, including an alumni art show, an allclass reunion, a “Thanks Coach” reunion, a Saturday evening “Spectacular” celebration and more. “I would be remiss if I didn't credit the success of the school to our founders but also our incredible faculty,” Lauren says. “I think the general public has a perception of the school is just for rich white kids, but walk into any classroom, and you will see a lot of ethnic and racial diversity in the school. The students also see how special the school is because they are very successful in college."
