Summer is here! SUMMERTIME IS AN ENJOYABLE SEASON. It’s that time of year when everything slows down just a bit, the kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. Many of us spend time cooling down while boating on one of our beautiful Arizona lakes or by taking a drive up north to enjoy the mild temperatures.

Open and Filled With Light: RECIPE GIRL FOUNDER LORI LANGE SHARES HER RENOVATED KITCHEN

ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY

RECIPE DEVELOPER, COOKBOOK AUTHOR AND THE FOUNDER OF RECIPEGIRL.COM LORI LANGE SHARED HER HOME RENOVATION “BEFORE” PROCESS IN FEBRUARY. With the home  and notably the kitchen space completed, Lori reflects on her vision coming to life. “With this remodel, I hoped to create a warm, inviting, farmhouse-modern-style home with a lot of natural light,” she says. “The new design is a draw for the companies I partner with, who are happy to see such a beautiful background for my food photography and recipe videos.” FEATURES AND VENDORS McKenzie Architectural Kitchens created the new layout of the kitchen. “We decided to gut the kitchen and start from scratch, creating more function.  We took out all of the original arches, the new appliances are all in easy reach of the large basin sink, and putting in a range instead of separate ovens means we have more space for our bar area.”  Cabico Cabinetry created custom upgrades for the kitchen island and wood-stained range hood.

“We chose white cabinetry on the exterior of the kitchen with cabinets that were built to fill space all the way to the ceiling. Making use of the height of the cabinetry means we have a lot more storage space than the previous layout, and the white background gives our kitchen a light and bright feel. Seafoam green custom cabinetry on the island adds a little color to the white kitchen, and a custom wood range hood is a focal showpiece.” Innovative Wine Cellar Designs designed and built a refrigerated glass wine wall. “We’re wine lovers, so we took out a divider wall between the family room and the kitchen and replaced it with a floor-to-ceiling, refrigerated glass wine wall to house a nice collection of wines.” NanaWall Systems opened up the wall in the living area to the backyard and put in a folding glass wall. “It lets in so much light, and the sunset views are visible from everywhere in our kitchen and living area.” Cactus Stone and Tile installed the quartz countertops and leathered marble fireplace, Metro West Flooring installed Mediterranean oak wood floors, Superior Sun Solutions installed motorized retractable sun shades in the backyard patio and Leslie Paige Interiors did the consultation on tile choices and fireplace design. “Shooting photos is so much better with the large amount of natural light coming into the house, and it’s the perfect space for entertaining too. We’ve created such a comfortable place to live,” Lori says.

“My favorite features of the remodel include the wine wall, a showpiece that welcomes guests as they enter our home; and the glass NanaWall that opens up to the backyard, bringing in a lot of natural light and allowing us to utilize an indoor/outdoor space for entertaining with friends and family.” July 2019 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

ACTOR SEAN DILLINGHAM DISCUSSES SUCCESS WITH ARIZONA ROOTS ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2019

As an actor, Sean has appeared in more than 98 commercials, 40-plus  films and 15 national television series.  He’s had network television appearances on Operation REPO, Discovery ID, Buried in the Backyard, The NightShift, Longmire, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, This Is Us, There's  Johnny and Yellowstone. LOCAL LIMELIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

PERSEVERANCE IS KEY IN ACHIEVING SUCCESS UNDER THE LIGHTS OF HOLLYWOOD. As actor Sean Dillingham explains, Hollywood is less of a place and more of a state of mind actors strive for. For him, he loves when Hollywood calls him but finds comforts in his roots here in Arizona, where he lives full-time with his family. "I am from Arizona, and my lifestyle here prepared me for an actor's lifestyle because it kept me humble and hard-working," Sean says. "I have friends who say, 'I'm moving to LA,' and I can't help but wonder why? First, make a ripple where you’re from, in your hometown. Growing up, I wanted to be an actor, not a movie star. I don’t want the glamour first and foremost; I want to act. LA is a town of movie stars who are vying for huge roles. when LA calls me, I go. Otherwise, I don’t need to live there full-time. Hollywood feels less physical. Get credits where you're from. You need that first. Hollywood can happen anywhere, even in Phoenix. It’s a state of mind. You have to drive yourself and find opportunities locally first." Sean recalls his childhood in Arizona. While his dad's military career kept him moving, he always felt Arizona called him back. He strived from a young age to acquire acting experience, knowing it was what he wanted in elementary school. He acted in school plays and community plays, worked with drama at his school's program and then made the step into semi-professional theater. It was then that he decided to explore the world of Improv. "I loved performing in a less rigid structure. I love improv; it's freeing, and I feel it's my strong suit. I have been able to work on TV, films and commercials where directors encourage my improvisations,  so that’s fantastic," he says. "I built a great foundation here in Arizona. I have five agents now and travel throughout the Southwest, but once in a while I see projects here to get involved with, and I always welcome that." 26

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2019

"I have done 98 commercials, but my first was in my 20s. I always thought the actor was the most important thing on the set. I’d feel like 'the star has arrived' once I was there. Then you learn the lighting crew and directors, etc. want you to get things right so they can go to lunch. After all, they’ve been there for hours setting everything up. It's really a team effort, from props and sound to lighting. They're all important. Go in knowing this, and you will have a much better experience. The project will be successful. No one wants to be known as the difficult guy to work with."

John Light is one such project that had Sean working close to home. The film's world premiere will hit Arizona in August 2019 and follows the life of John Light, one of the most dangerous prisoners in Arizona’s State Penitentiary. He was a legendary local barroom brawler who surprisingly finds God in a prison Bible study. Now reformed, John must face life on the outside as a new man.

Community Showstoppers SEE HOW THE CHAIRS OF THE PHOENIX THEATRE COMPANY'S APPLAUSE! GALA ARE BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO A 100-YEAR-OLD LOCAL GEM

THE PHOENIX THEATRE COMPANY TURNS 100 THIS YEAR AND AS A STAPLE IN THE COMMUNITY  HAS PLANNED AN EVENING FEATURING AN ORIGINAL MUSICAL TRIBUTE HIGHLIGHTING THE HISTORY OF THE COMPANY AND ITS SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY. The Applause! Gala will be a star-studded event this fall benefiting The Phoenix Theatre Company’s great work, both on stage and in the community. Chairing the centennial Applause! Gala 2019 are couples Nan and CA Howlett, Maja and John Langbein and Sandy and Mac Magruder. The ladies shared their excitement for the event. “Being a part of this star-studded gala means we’ll have a small part in continuing to recognize and support the growth of the Phoenix Theatre for years to come,” Maja says. “We want our children to grow up knowing their interest and support in the arts and the community of Phoenix will serve as a platform of higher purpose for the generations that will follow.” Maja and her husband are  active with theater and arts  and feel that the Phoenix Theatre Company exemplifies value, diversity, endless support and an overall good feeling.

“These values are essential in our lives, and we know they are embraced and shared endlessly throughout the community in everything the Theatre is committed to,” she says. A native of Phoenix, Nan grew up with a love for theater thanks to her grandmother. She feels that theater  is essential in child development and emotional growth. “It’s very moving to see the confidence that young people gain through participation in the Theatre’s summer camp,” Nan says. “It helps so many children and young adults overcome social awkwardness, fear, anxiety and the stresses that are part of growing up.”  Nan and her husband credit Artistic Director Michael Barnard for the positive dynamic the Company is known for. “The Theatre is driven by Michael’s vision to make a positive difference thanks to the freedom and healing created by theater.” Sandy feels this is a monumental event that will bring an enhanced passion for the arts to the community. “There are very few cultural venues in our state that have been in continuous operation for 100 years,” Sandy says. “I am very proud to be a part of The Phoenix Theater’s Gala, and while I’m not sure how many of our surprises  we want to disclose yet, I can say it is going to be a really fabulous evening with our friends and celebrity guests.”

“Mac and I moved to Arizona almost 50 years ago, and both of us strongly believe in being involved and giving back to our community. I was a founding member of WINGS, a Women’s Board for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which is where I first learned about and saw the Phoenix Theatre’s program Partners that Heal. This remarkable program helps children in the hospital and their families better deal with pain and fear through humor therapy. I love this approach so much and particularly appreciate the impact it has had on kids and their families over the years. I love that the Theatre goes beyond its walls to touch the lives of more in our community.” –Sandy Magruder July 2019 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

"Crashing Waves" has been enhanced with a traditional scoop frame bringing out the shapes the artist had incorporated in his painting. | 3. "AZ Landscape" showcases Tivoli khaki tweed fabric which brings out the cacti. | 4. “End of Day” by Lisa Ridgers is framed with a graphite natural fillet with a Tivoli tweed liner to give the feeling of sand and a universal natural cherry inner frame to pull out the detail finished with a Roma natural maple and silver transitional frame. | 5. The small grouping of treasures showcases a red anemone photo from Waikiki and is contrasted with a white mat and inner natural wood inlay frame with black outer frame for drama. The beige anemones are framed with a white mat for contrast and a lacquered angle frame with beach tones of white and sand. The sand dollars are shadowboxed with a white and graphite mat to blend with the colors of the dollars and help highlight their patterns. A simple graphite frame is used to pull out the pattern. | 6. "Beside the Water" by Lisa Ridgers is framed in an off-white linen liner with bronze scalloped fillet to bring out the horizon line coupled with an inner sage silk liner for the soft foreground area. | 7. The 2019 Jaguar

I-PACE EV400 HSE 36

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2019

I CHOSE THIS VEHICLE STRATEGICALLY THIS MONTH, AS IT IS THE PERFECT FIT FOR OUR ECO-FRIENDLY ISSUE. This beautiful all-electric SUV may have the body of a small SUV, but let there be no mistake: for an all-electric vehicle, the acceleration is first in its class going f0-60 in 4.5 seconds. With it’s sleek body and smooth driving this vehicle did not disappoint.  Driving the I-PACE  was seamless with its sports car-like agility and ease of braking by simply letting off the gas. Some of the convenient safety features include rear camera, 360 surround camera, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and adaptive speed limiter. The Active Air Suspension of the I‑PACE automatically lowers the car by 0.4 inches when traveling at speeds in excess of 65 mph over extended periods of time. The interior of the I-PACE was what you would expect of a Jaguar: luxurious comfort with Windsor leather seats including heated and cooled power front sport seats. It provides ultimate temperature comfort with a two-zone climate control. The top boasts a fixed panoramic rooftop with automatic tinting, allowing for an open feel including rear privacy glass. Modern conveniences include a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot, Sirius/XM, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and InControl Apps. With limited driving experience in the all-electric car family, I would recommend this vehicle for its driving enjoyment, comfort, safety and

eco-friendly nature.

IT WAS THROUGH A SHARED PASSION FOR VINTAGE

STORY VINTAGE GOODS, OPENED THEIR SCOTTSDALE STORE, A HAVEN FOR UNIQUE, QUALITY VINTAGE FINDS. "When I was younger, I would hunt for treasures at flea markets, so my passion for vintage finds started at an early age. I met Sophia, and she shared that same passion. Over the years,  we began dreaming together of having our own storefront," Shelley says. "Our mutual love of hunting for antiques and vintage pieces to add interest to our own homes led to this venture. It didn’t take long for us to know we wanted to share this with others," Sophia says. Each item in the store is hand-picked by its owners. They need to love a product and feel it will enhance a home in order to 02

sell it. Being a small business allows the women to get to know the style of their customers and understand what they need to search for when stocking their location. "Chances are it will look different every time you step inside Piece

and Story. We never know what items we will discover on our buying trips. We can go with thoughts of what we would like to find but then get excited about something that we haven’t seen before," Sophia says. "Also, if a customer is looking for a vintage piece similar to the kinds of things we have in the shop, we may be able to secure it through the many sellers we have met during our travels." "We are very hands-on and love sharing the stories behind pieces that our customers choose," Shelley says.

03

"We always talk about the 'pieces' and how every piece tells a story. When we were naming the store, we wanted people to know that it is more about finding a piece to put in your home; it’s sharing a piece of history. We also love the stories from the people we meet while we are hunting and shopping for the store. The name just fit." –Shelley Adelson
