Once upon a time a dream came true. A dream that began with a vision to create the perfect estate. One where more dreams could be had and memories made. Lot 1652, nestled in the heart of the upper canyon of Silverleaf, is a one-of-a-kind custom homesite chosen for its forever views and privacy, purposely designed and built for the ultimate lifestyle. A collaborative build and design team was assembled to create the perfect residence. Master Builder John Schultz and his development team spent four years on the project. The finishes were custom created by Kristin Hazen Design. The California buyers were looking for their fairytale castle in the beautiful desert lifestyle of North Scottsdale. It was love at first sight for these savvy and sophisticated buyers who appreciated the quality and value of this incredible custom estate. The purchase price and other financial advantages of Arizona vs California made the decision easy. Andrew Bloom and the BVO Luxury Group attracted buyers from all over the world and procured multiple offers on this home. The results speak for themselves and the memories to be made by these lucky buyers is only the beginning of a beautiful life story.

A Quality Relationship with Artifical Grass Masters VETERAN JOSHUA APODACA HAS HIGH STANDARDS WHEN IT COMES TO RUNNING HIS BUSINESS AND SAYS CUSTOMERS SHOULD TOO ARTICLE STACI HAUK FROM TWO GUYS AND A PICKUP TRUCK TO A THRIVING BUSINESS, ARTIFICIAL GRASS MASTERS IS SIX YEARS INTO ITS SUCCESS IN THE INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT VIEWS CUSTOMER SERVICE JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY. "We offer 24-hour support and have dedicated staff that communicates with customers so everyone is on the same page. We make sure that no one feels ignored, even in this quick-moving business. It’s about quality assurance," says owner Joshua Apodaca. Being a marketer by trade, Joshua hired trusted employees and began to make great alliances. Coupled with a quality product, the business grew over time. "We offer the best selections of our own premium line of artificial grass and putting greens, but we also offer artificial grass from all of our competitors to make sure you get the best price," Joshua says. Artificial Grass Masters has a commitment to offering the best materials, the very best grass  and the  most affordable pricing. QUIET MUSIC ECHOES OVER CANDLELIT TABLES, DRAPED WITH OLD-WORLD CHARM AND COUPLED WITH THE WHIMSY AND ELEGANCE OF A EUROPEAN GARDEN. Café Monarch's attention to detail delights all the senses. From upscale and eclectic cuisine to an intimate ambiance, it is a romantic experience. "We stand out due to our staff," says sales director Phillip Lewkowicz. "All our sommeliers are trained extensively in food and wine — they take guests on a journey around the world in one evening." This is the first restaurant venture for Lewkowicz's family, and they offer an exceptional experience because that is what they know and what they love to do. The ever-evolving menu changes every two to three weeks at Café Monarch  and revolves around what is local, in season and fresh. All ingredients are premium and high-end, from their vegetables and fish to their beef. The four-course prix fixe menu is dependent on the main entree with the addition of wine pairings. "You'll feel like you're on vacation when you visit — that's our goal," Phillip says. Simple Gatherings Dinner Dates for 2018-19 are as follows: Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 14, Jan. 18, March 15 and April 12, with more dates to be determined. Visit TheSimpleFarm.net for details.  The Simple Farm adds new dimension to the Farm to Table Dinner, with a true farm experience   that is also elegant and alluring.  "For us, it's about so much more than food — it's about the experience. Simple Gatherings offers an authentic alfresco farm experience," says owner Lylah Ledner. Simple Farm is the sole working farm in Scottsdale, and often visitors marvel at its very existence within a busy city. The welcoming and inviting space that houses the Simple Gatherings aspect of the farm features wood-fired ovens, an intimate table for up to 34 guests, twinkling lights and CAFÉ MONARCH 6939 East First Ave., Scottsdale, Arizona, 480.970.7682, CafeMonarch.com THE SIMPLE FARM 9080 E. chandeliers, and fresh flowers and herbs. The added element of community is ingenious, allowing diners to delight in specially created menus while connecting with other guests. "You become a community at the table, which connects us all — it's beautiful," Lylah says. Chef Derek Christensen from Moonrise Standards bases his menus for Simple Gatherings on what is in the garden that day. He also focuses on what is seasonal and local. Diners are encouraged to try something new by attending a Simple Gatherings Dinner. "You can't be concerned about the menu. Our chef will build a menu the week of the event that will make your senses come alive. You have to be 'all in' because this is something magical," Lylah says. Lylah, her husband, Michael, and Derek want the Gatherings to be an organic experience and create a friendly setting with pre-dinner tours of the farm. A full wait staff and sommeliers provide an upscale tone you won't soon forget.  "Don’t expect anything but celebrating everything. You will leave with an 'ahhh' feeling," Lylah says.

A SKY-HIGH GEM PENTHOUSE PERFECTION IN ROCKY POINT ARTICLE JOYCE SELK AND KATHLEEN BLAIR

26

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2018

WHAT REALLY BECKONS YOUR ATTENTION IS THE VIEW. OPENING THE LARGE SLIDING GLASS DOORS, THE VIEW IS INCREDIBLE. THE GROUNDS BELOW ARE METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. PALM TREES BILLOW IN THE OCEAN BREEZE. THE SUN’S REFLECTION SPARKLES OFF THE WATERS OF THE MANY POOLS IN THE COMPLEX.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT WHEN YOU ARE GIVEN THE

SPECIAL CODE THAT ALLOWS THE ELEVATOR TO TAKE YOU UP TO THE PENTHOUSE AT BELLA SIRENA. Walking inside the beautifully etched

doorway of Penthouse C1301, you find yourself in the spacious yet comfort-

able, living area with a large dining table for 12, leather couches, a 70-inch flat-screen TV and a dream kitchen with granite countertops and high-end stainless steel appliances.

But what really beckons your attention is the view. Opening the large sliding glass doors, the view is incredible. The grounds below are meticulously maintained. Palm trees billow in the ocean breeze. The sun’s reflection sparkles off

the waters of the many pools in the complex. Offering 360-degree views, the skyline of Los Suenos catches your eye to the left and the construction of the new cruise ship dock to the right. Straight ahead is nothing but a beautiful view of the Sea of Cortez and its sandy beach.

Exploring the 5,000-square-foot penthouse, there are “Oh, look!” moments

at every turn. The inside of the condo has literally been brought outdoors with

the large sliding pocket doors opening the living area and master bedroom to

the ocean view. From the walk-in wine cellar with two separate wine coolers; the media room with a great stereo system; the master ensuite complete with fireplace and custom walk-in closet; three more large bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom; and the oversized laundry room to the intricate tile work in the ceiling recesses, the attention to detail will not go unnoticed.

The kitchen is professionally equipped with anything and everything you could possibly need: Viking appliances, well-stocked cupboards and drawers, pass-through windows to the deck and, best of all, a separate ice-making unit to keep up with the many guests.

The palapas are very large — both of them! The furniture is heavy yet inviting, and the outdoor gas grill is large enough to handle lots of cooking.

The hot tub is a welcome respite after a full day of activities. A spiral staircase leads up to the second outdoor space, which is nicely appointed and complete with a fireplace.

The owners of this luxury property are local to Phoenix and bought their first Rocky Point property in 2008, and this one in 2015. They have not spared any expense or attention to detail for their guests. From the welcome note and bottle of Champagne to the supply of amenities and the extremely comfortable beds, you only need to bring your clothes! If you're considering a relaxing and plush stay in Rocky Point, don't miss this gem. The owners of the condo are incredibly accommodating and generous with their home. The only negative thing we could come up with was the thought of it not being available the next time we want to escape to Mexico! A SKY-HIGH GEM

(CON TI N U ED)

ROCKY POINT 101 Puerto Peñasco (nicknamed Rocky Point) is a growing seaside village and beach destination that is an easy four-hour drive from Chandler. Once you cross the border, you will travel less than an hour on the Mexican highway, which is clearly marked along the way as a “hassle-free zone.” Almost every car you see will have an Arizona or California license plate. Although it may seem familiar based on the company, going to a foreign country can be intimidating when you don’t know the culture or laws. The following can help you plan ahead and enjoy your trip. CAR INSURANCE – Everyone driving to Mexico is required by law to purchase Mexican vehicle insurance with liability coverage. There are several places to do so before you cross the border. CURRENCY – The resorts, most restaurants and stores use U.S. currency, but it is wise to have pesos for cabs, tips and street vendors. Credit cards are subject to additional fees when used internationally. There are also fees on cash withdrawals from foreign bank ATMs. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS – Adults and children 16 and over need a passport or passport card. Children under 16 only need their birth certificate. The driver must also have a current driver’s license. Make photocopies of these documents and keep them separate from the originals. VEHICLE TITLES — All vehicles crossing the border must have a vehicle title. This includes cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, water bikes, ATVs, dune buggies, etc. If you are leasing your vehicle, the leasing contract must be in the name of the person driving the car. If your vehicle is a company car and you are allowed to drive it out of the country, you will need to show a document verifying your employment and authorization to drive the vehicle in Mexico. SMART TRAVEL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM (STEP) – This free program is provided by the U.S. government for U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. This program allows you to enter information about your trip so the U.S. Department of State can assist you in case of an emergency. Enroll at Travel.State.Gov. SPEED LIMITS AND TRAFFIC SIGNS – Speed limit signs in Mexico are in kilometers. When driving through Rocky Point, the speed limit is 40 km, or 25 mph, unless otherwise noted. If you break the traffic laws, fines will be assessed and you will be asked to follow the officer to the police station, where fines must be paid immediately. TIPPING – The standard rate for tipping at restaurants, bars and taxis is 15 percent. For parking attendants, laundry service and room service a 10 percent peso tip is customary. 28

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | July 2018

THINGS TO DO IN ROCKY POINT EL MALECON BOARDWALK – A stroll down the Malecon in downtown Puerto Peñasco is a great way to take in the local flavor and the magnificent view of the Sea of Cortez. Along the boardwalk, you’ll find shops, restaurants and fish markets. Don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets. FISHING – Whether an avid fisherman or a novice, Rocky Point is one of the best locations in Mexico for fishing because of the surrounding islands, reefs and estuaries. Popular fish species include sierra mackerel, triggerfish, corvina, shrimp, grouper and spotted seabass. SAN JORGE ISLAND — Bird Island – Take a boat ride over to the island. Swim and snorkel with sea lions, do some bird watching, see dolphins, scuba dive or kayak. From October to April, you might see whales! EL PINACATE – Challenge yourself with a hike to the peak of El Pinacate, the Santa Clara Volcano. It is a natural protected area, where lava flowed more than 2 million years ago. The mountain range is filled with rocks, sand and volcanic ashes that have formed spectacular colors and craters. El Pinacate is a well-maintained national park about 45 minutes from Puerto Peñasco. Camping is allowed. GOLF – Three golf courses are available; two are Jack Nicklaus-designed courses with spectacular scenery. SAND DUNES – Sand dunes offer activities such as horseback riding, ATV and dune buggy riding, sand boarding and hiking. OYSTER FARM – Only seven miles from Rocky Point, you can watch oysters being caught, shucked and served.

The Magic of Merit Crossing

5 Bedrooms | 9 Bathrooms | 15,543 SF | $6,499,000

When Mark and Bev Nuessle explored the city in search of the perfect home they toured 50 houses before deciding to build. When they finished their masterpiece, they had an elegant and functional, European-style home imbued with old-world charm. The site selection wasn’t easy. They wanted a secure neighborhood without the hassle of a 24 on-site guard. They wanted an expansive site that would allow them to have usable entertainment space and not be too restricted by the topography or Natural Open Space limitations. “We spent three years drawing, three years building and we got just what we wanted,” says Mark Nuessle. The 15,600 square-foot Scottsdale home, in the hidden village of the Merit Crossing community, is located on 3.3 acres. Enter the private property through iron gates, drive over a wooden bridge and behold the mature landscaping, enclosed courtyard and dramatic water fountain all centered to the entry that leads to a picture perfect view. “There’s tons of detail throughout,” says Nuessle. “When you walk through the entry you can see pinnacle peak mountain, dead center.” The home has six bedrooms and nine baths. This includes the two-story guest house with large, open rooms and a full kitchen. It’s big enough to accommodate a group of musicians for the weekend or extended family and guests. This Home offers the finest details in every area. The main residence offers a luxury master suite with adjoining exercise room and steam shower. Four secondary ensuites, custom theater seating for ten, gourmet kitchen with the best of everything including a pizza oven, side by side sub zeros, wolfe dual fuel cooktop, double Asko dishwashers, icemaker- 3 room wine cellar with its own kitchen and dumb waiter, a full bar (with ice maker, dishwasher, frig, sink- anything you could need), cantera fireplace, 26 foot ceilings with removable wooden beams and 4 sets of french doors leading to courtyard, formal living rooms stares at Pinnacle Peak Mountain, formaldining room with brick ceiling looks onto courtyard. stunning private study with citywide views and a fully functional guest home with all the details of the main home. Exquisite stonework and 5 fireplaces add warmth and romance throughout. Outdoor living at its finest- pocket wall of glass leads you to your own 18 hole putting green designed by local PGA pro, expansive patios, BBQ’s, pool, spa, waterfalls, fireplace, firewoks, fire pit, cabana and balcony. A car lovers dream completes this amazing estate estate with space for 12 vehicles along with custom cabinets, storage room, workshop,

a/c and a stain concrete floor. Mark and Bev have hosted seven fundraisers in honor of Hope Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to children with life-threatening medical conditions. They can comfortably seat? 250 guests in their backyard. Outdoor spaces include three expansive covered patios, a gazebo and two fire pits. Guests can enjoy both mountain and city views all with complete privacy. “We have a nice house but if we don’t share it we don’t deserve it,” says Nuessle. They’ve also celebrated nine weddings in their backyard. Their smart house lends itself well to events with its upgraded electronic equipment. They can turn on their party lights with a push of a button. “We made it simple and easy to live in. We wanted it to feel relaxed and usable,” says Nuessle. “It’s large but we made every single room warm, and that’s hard to do with a big house.” They didn’t sacrifice form for function. For example, it takes five steps to get groceries from the car to the pantry. They have a second laundry room off the master bedroom. And there’s a dumb waiter to carry things to and from the wine cellar. “We have date night in the wine cellar every week, it’s nice down there. We are newlyweds after all,” says Nuessle. If your are looking for privacy yet close to everything this is the estate for you. 15 minutes gets you to Scottsdale Airpark and less gets you to the 101. This is truly a amazing home. The home was recently valued by Lovitt and Touché for $14,281,000 and is being offered at only $5,999,900. DIRECTORY JOANNA SWEATT HAS AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS NEAR TO HER HEART. As a fellow veteran, she is familiar with acclimating to civilian life. Joanna began her work at ASU Tillman Center in 2012 and worked with student veteran affairs. This was her first civilian job, which put her in an environment that allowed her to relate to others in her same position and assist them with feeling at ease back at home. She says the spirit of Tillman is “magical" and made it possible to find purpose and meaning again.

WHAT IS THE VETERANS DIRECTORY? The Veterans Directory is a comprehensive resource tool that informs the Veteran community about how they can get involved into their overall community. We bridge the divide and help shape messaging that benefits everyone interested in serving the Veteran community. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT ACCOMPLISHING SUCH A LARGE AND IMPORTANT TASK? Through partnerships, The Veterans Directory works to put on programs and awareness campaigns that help move the veteran population forward in their new civilian lives. We connect them to viable resources that can include workforce development, curriculum access, entrepreneurial tools, networking and education. We also work to give a voice to the women veteran community through some specific outreach programs that we have worked to put together. WHY DO YOU FEEL YOUR WORK IS SPECIAL? We do this work because our organization was started by veterans who understand that in order to thrive, we must welcome veterans back to the community and offer them an opportunity to continue to serve outside of just saying, "thank you for your service.” We discuss each individual's goals and how they can achieve them with our help. We motivate them and provide the tools they need to succeed. DISCUSS SOME GOALS THE VETERAN'S DIRECTORY HAS ACCOMPLISHED. Some of The Veterans Directory accomplishments include setting up a housing program with Christopher Todd Communities entitled "A New Lease on Life." We also participated in the Women Veterans Event 2017: Designing Your Transformation. We coordinated the Veteran Career Conference 2018 in partnership with the Rattlers and Rayhons Financial.  CAN YOU DISCUSS A PERSONAL STORY THAT TIES ALL YOUR HARD WORK AND EFFORTS TOGETHER?  I had my daughter at 18, which is what led me to the Marine Corps. She is now graduating college from ASU's W.P. Carey School of Business with a degree in Computer Information Science. She is a  four-year MCSF Scholarship recipient. TheVeteransDirectory.org

Outdoor Oasis CUSTOM IDEAS TO BEAUTIFY YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE AND GET YOUR HOME READY FOR ENTERTAINING ARTICLE STACI HAUK

WHETHER IT'S A TRANQUIL REFLECTIVE POOL, A FIRE FEATURE IDEAL FOR ENTERTAINING OR AN EDIBLE MENAGERIE, TWO LOCAL COMPANIES KNOW AN EXCEPTIONAL OUTDOOR SPACE BEGINS WITH QUALITY AND STRONG CRAFTSMANSHIP. Desert Foothills Landscape focuses on creating living art forms on properties around the Valley. “We own private nurseries where we grow our plants, so everything is mature. We provide clients with that immediate 'wow' factor,” says Marketing Director John Drew. Sonoran Waters thrives on providing distinction to any outdoor oasis.

can add pathways and small seating areas as well as botanicals to make for a resort-like feel. The blend of water and fire also adds a special touch. “With one extreme fire/water feature, we secured gas lines inside the feature so the fire dances off the water’s edge when it’s ignited,” Drew says. Desert Foothills Landscape places emphasis on the value of low-voltage lighting so the yard looks completely different at night, as certain elements should be highlighted at different times of day.

2 Putting greens make for a great gathering place for family time and help guests engage in an activity. It is a perfect way to wind down after a long day at work and practice your short game from the comfort of home. To help with flow around the green, Desert Foothills takes many factors into consideration.  “We’re in tune with technology and smart home design and have the ability to control all fire, water and lighting features from your iPad," Drew says. "You always want to complement the interior designer and architect’s design of the home. If the home has a modern look, then we will change our design style with linear structured design elements. When a home has a mountainous backdrop, our design will showcase the whimsical southwestern look."

The planters are built out of steel, and the pool area is planked by heirloom tomatoes on the vine.” Lush gardens that adorn the outskirts of the pool are thriving, and neighbors often bring a basket to collect organic herbs and produce. LOCAL’S CHOICE

A COLD BREW OR TWO ARIZONA SUMMERS JUST GOT EASIER WITH THIS LIST OF ICY SPECIALTY DRINKS FROM FOUR LOCAL BREWERIES

McFate Bre wing Compa ny Hatch Chili Gatos

MCFATE BREWING COMPANY FEATURES A HATCH CHILE BEER CALLED HATCH CHILI GATOS. This golden ale coupled with roasted Hatch chiles packs a huge chile aroma, mild flavor and very little heat. This beer won a Gold Medal at the 2018 World Beer Cup. One of Scottsdale Beer Company's specialty creations is the SBC German-style Hefeweizen. O.H.S.O. Brewery and Distillery  has two sweet and satisfying drinks to quench your thirst. The Meyer Meringue features housemade lemon vodka, and the OHSO Dreamsicle delights with housemade orange vodka. Mesquite River Brewing offers the Way Off Camber Imperial Amber. Made in an experimentation round, it became highly requested and stayed in rotation with a similar recreation. Specialty malts make it sweet and hoppy without being overpowering.
