Lifestyle Letter

Fall into October

G

rowing up and living in the Midwest most of my life, October was always one of my favorite months of the year. Trees started turning colors as the temperatures started to drop and sports were everywhere. Baseball season was wrapping up with the World Series, and football was in full swing, the local high school game on Friday night, my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday and the Chiefs (sorry Cardinals) on Sunday. Nothing better than grabbing a cup of coffee in the cool mornings planning my sporting day.

Today, not much has changed. October in Arizona is still one of my favorite months. For me today, it signals a break in the heat, more time to spend outside and, oh yeah, football.

FRESHLY BREWED ALTITUDE COFFEE LAB

THREE LOCAL COFFEE SHOPS ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR

8320 N. Hayden Road, E107 Scottsdale, AZ 85258 480.878.5611 AltitudeCoffeeLab.com For a coffee lover, there’s something about sitting down to enjoy freshly brewed coffee that becomes a reason to celebrate. Altitude Coffee Lab allows you to do just that; the roastery is known for its wonderful organic coffee and skilled baristas who produce premium coffee drinks. The quaint cafe is filled with wonderful coffee smells during the roasting process and offers a relaxing view of a nearby lake. Altitude is properly named for recognizing the importance each altitude has on the profile of coffee bean grown there. Altitude Coffee Lab educates about different coffee tastes and methods of brewing, making the cafe a favorite spot for true coffee connoisseurs. Opened in 2013 by Paul Musikanth and Craig Matthew, they partnered with longtime customer Ori Eisen and Clint Coonfer to add new strengths to the business. Their mission is to make their customer’s coffee experience the best each time they visit. Using organic coffee beans, which are roasted on premise and never kept longer than six days, gives each cup the freshest and smoothest taste. “From bean to roast to cup no more than six days so there’s no need for sugar,” Ori says. Intense training is given to ensure each barista knows how to make the variety of coffee drinks using different methods. Skill is needed to not overheat the milk to create the proper sweetness each and every time.  Food items and pastries are available as well as a selection of teas. They’ve recently added evening hours with entertainment three nights a week serving beer, wine and other spirits.

SCOOP AND JOY LOUNGE 9397 E. Shea Blvd Scottsdale, AZ 85260 480.889.4901 ScoopAndJoyLounge.com

Opened in August 2016, Scoop and Joy has become a local favorite as owner Remzi Kaval  has taken the favorite scoops of life and brought them under one roof serving delicious coffee drinks, a wide assortment of teas and yummy ice cream.  For coffee, Kaval uses a Columbian roasted dark, classic mix. In addition to all the classic coffee drinks, you’ll find house favorites like raspberry mocha, Nutella latte and chai tea latte.   “The grinding of the coffee is an art and produces the main taste of the coffee," Remzi says. "A couple extra seconds can change the taste as the water stays too long when the grinds are too fine, making the coffee bitter." Remzi grew up in village in Turkey bearing the same name with seven brothers and four sisters. Even though he played professional table tennis for 18 years, he always had an entrepreneurial spirit.   “As a kid, I dreamed someday I’d have a business that would be filled with happiness, but didn’t know what kind of business it would be,” he say. “My dream came true as you can’t be sad when eating ice cream.” You’ll find a large selection of flavors of Lappert’s Hawaii premium ice cream to choose from. This exquisitely delicious artesian ice cream has no eggs, no whipped cream, no food coloring and is low in calories.   Other food items offered are homemade pastries, Remzi's famous ricotta cheesecake and made-to-order sandwiches using sourdough bread, croissants or English muffins. Sports Apps for Local Fans ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON

t’s fall, which means many sports are taking off locally and nationwide. What are some of the best apps to help you keep up with your favorite teams and

players? We asked a few Valley sports enthusiasts to find out.

VIKTRE

Viktre.com VIKTRE is a up-and-coming global sports app that allows fans and top athletes to interact on a whole new level, according to its makers. “As a Hall of Fame athlete for the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, VIKTRE gives me something unique: the world's first free and truly global sports app dedicated to discovering and revealing the personal, even private stories of the top Olympic, national team and professional athletes all over the world,” says Nick Lowery, who now calls Scottsdale home. “VICTRE has many of the most famous athletes across the world on our app, like Phoenix's own Michael Phelps—the greatest Olympian Gold medalist of all time—the stars of the NFL, soccer, cricket, hockey, basketball, golf, baseball, wrestling, boxing, auto racing and more!”

UREPP

UREPP.com If you love following amateur sports, this is the app for you. “This app was created here in the Valley by local entrepreneurs Alex Enright and Paolo Hutchison,” sports fan Jennifer Hutchison says. “This is an app for amateur athletes to livestream their games and create and share their highlights through social media profiles. Along with the iPhone app is the Smart Box, which allows livestreaming of any amateur sporting event. Athletes can livestream their games and grab highlights from those live games as they're happening and save to their profiles. These clips can be shared on social media and email.” It’s the perfect app for local athletes, coaches, parents and recruiters. Look for UREPP’s official launch soon.

Scott Hanson, a north Scottsdale resident and Arizona native, has officiated high school football and baseball locally for more than 30 years. He’s also authored two books about local sports. “Who is Gym” and “What’s Your Number," and notes that, for following his favorite national teams, he likes to keep it streamlined. “For me, it’s pretty simple. I use Yahoo Baseball to keep track of my fantasy baseball team. It provides up-to-the-minute information on player injuries, their stats and matchups. It also keeps me updated on the smack-talk from the other teams in the league, as well as trade offers and roster moves,” he says. “ I also have the ESPN app, which goes beyond just baseball. I have it set up with my favorites, so I get alerted anytime there is news about the Diamondbacks, Cardinals or Packers. I can also use it to watch games in progress.” 16
