The Thankful Issue

In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. While Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, I’ve grown to remember the act of Thanksgiving every day. The world is so fast, the need for things seems stronger than ever before. I hope everyone has time to reflect on today, the life they have and the people they are thankful for.

I remember some of the toughest times the kids and I had were during the holidays. When we had dinner, I would play the “Thankful Game”. We would go around the table and share something we were thankful for. This small action gave us a moment to remember that even though our lives looked different, and we may not have all the “Things” everyone else had, we had each other. Somehow, after playing the game, the mood was always lighter, the smiles were bigger, and the love was more apparent.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. As we prepare to gather with our loved ones this holiday season, take a moment to count your blessings literally. Make a list down to the smallest things that are taken for granted that someone else may not have the ability or access to. If you are thankful for someone, call them and tell them! If you are thankful for your civil servants, show them, bake something delicious and bring it to the firehouse, or police station. Thankfulness can be a word, and an action.

I challenge you in the month of November to take action every day to show your thankfulness. Your actions do not have to be monumental or extravagant, just meaningful and thoughtful. You may never know what an impact that one action will have on someone else.

Blessings to you and your family and cheers to everything you are thankful for!

THE HOLIDAYS CAN SEEM JOYFUL BUT COME WITH PITFALLS FOR MANY. LEARN TO MANAGE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DURING THE HOLIDAYS.

MANAGING HOLIDAY STRESS

“DON’T

As the seasons change and excitement for the holidays begin to surround us, it’s important to remember that not everyone may be looking forward to the celebration. For some, it may be a recent loss. For others, it can be the specter of another conversation with

and your needs before you run the holiday gauntlet, you’ll be better prepared to handle what comes.

Physical activity is a great way to tackle your stress before it becomes a problem. It sounds simple, but a 30-minute walk can transform your

EVER DISCOUNT IF SOMEONE’S UPSET ABOUT SOMETHING. DON’T TRIVIALIZE.”

family members who don’t understand us and our decisions. These stressors can happen to anyone at any time, but they always seem to loom larger around the holidays. Andrew and Jennifer Hewitt of Caliper Wellness see the signs of holiday stress in their patients every year. “They feel obligated. They know at some point they’re going to have to have uncomfortable conversations they don’t want to have,” shared Andrew. “Thanksgiving is the worst if you have extended family, because it’s ‘we’re going here for breakfast, go here for lunch and go here for dinner’. How did you enjoy anything on a day we’re supposed to be grateful? You spent it stressed.”

Before it gets the better of you, prepare yourself with simple ways to manage this holiday stress. By taking a few moments to focus on yourself

day. Setting aside time for a yoga class or sitting and stretching with mindful meditation can also break negative thought patterns and put you on a batter path. Heading to a gym and breaking a sweat can do wonders. Running or lifting heavy weights can work out frustration and make you feel accomplished.

Self-care is also a great way to manage stress. Whether it’s a massage, listening to music, taking time for a hot bath or picking up your favorite coffee or treat, take the time to do something you enjoy. You shouldn’t feel guilty for spending time on yourself. “It’s ‘a chocolate chip cookie would make me feel good right now, for all the good things that I do for my family,’” shared Andrew.

Once you’re in the middle of the holiday whirlwind, and stress gets the better of you, there are easy ways to

take back control. “Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to set a boundary,” said Andrew. “A boundary is something as simple as, ‘I need a glass of water. I’ll be right back.’ and remove yourself.” Don’t be afraid to say no without any guilt attached to it. “No, is a complete sentence. It’s no, period. Or no, exclamation point. Don’t be afraid to say no, to avoid uncomfortable situations that you don’t want to be put in.”

We should also be on the lookout for our friends and family who may be struggling this time of year. “Try to be more mindful.” Shared Jennifer Hewitt. “Look for someone just who’s avoiding. Someone who keeps going outside to sit by themselves for a few minutes,” added Andrew. These are opportunities where we can join them and help distract them from the situation and put distance between them and the issue causing the stress.

There may be times where we inadvertently trigger a stressful situation for someone. “You can’t really avoid it. Just don’t continue on that path,” said Andrew. “If I know that talking about football with my father-in-law is going to get him upset because we don’t like the same team, I avoid it. And if I do say something and it gets him upset, say ‘I didn’t realize that was going to be something that upset you. I’m sorry. Let’s just go in a different direction.’”

Shopping for a favorite treat at a local spot like Starkey Market is a great way to manage holiday stress.
Heavy physical activity, like lifting weights at BCMF, can help burn off the stress before it becomes too much.

“DON’T BE AFRAID TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF.”

You never know what someone is going through and situations they’re dealing with. While you may not understand why someone is upset, you should always be understanding instead of confrontational. “Don’t ever discount if someone’s upset about something. Don’t be like, ‘oh, there’s nothing to be upset about’. Realize that they might have a very good reason for being upset that you don’t know about. Don’t trivialize,” added Andrew.

If holiday stress is becoming harder to manage, talking to a therapist can make a big difference in helping you put things in perspective and take the action that’s best for you. The team at Caliper Wellness is always willing to talk and help you on your path to mental wellness. Visit caliperwellness.com to learn more and make an appointment.

Serving Up Hope

It can happen to anyone. An accident, a sudden bill, an unexpected layoff. Despite your best efforts, you could find yourself in a position you never expected. Bills you can’t pay. No local support system and looking at the possibility of homelessness. Where do you go when faced with those challenges? Thankfully, people in the Tampa Bay area have Metro Ministries to turn to for help in those dark days they never anticipated could happen to them. We spoke with Leona Wells, Managing Director of Development and Pasco Services to learn more about what they offer the community here in West Pasco.

METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES IS LIFTING UP THE COMMUNITY, BOTH DURING THE HOLIDAYS AND BEYOND.

“FOR US, IT’S BIGGER THAN GIVING A HOLIDAY MEAL.
WHAT YOU HAVE IS HOPE, BECAUSE YOUR COMMUNITY WRAPPED AROUND YOU.”

HOW DID METRO MINISTRIES GET STARTED?

In 1972, hunger and homelessness overwhelmed the Tampa community. Thirteen congregations came together to address the need and formed a nonprofit social services ministry, led by volunteers. They called it Metropolitan Ministries. In 1982, Rev. Morris E. Hintzman came as the organization’s first employee as the Executive Director. He cast the vision along with the board of directors to serve more people in more communities. In 2006, Tim Marks came as a volunteer and later became the CEO as Morris’s successor. What started as serving sandwiches on the sidewalk became a beacon of hope for hundreds of thousands of people in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.

WHAT SERVICES DOES THE WEST PASCO LOCATION OFFER?

Our Family Support Center is all about leaning into keeping people in their home and self-sufficient. We offer a food market, clothing and bill and utility assistance. We also have community adult education, providing community members with a GED and micro credentials. We also offer emergency housing for 48 families and the BrigAIDe street team provides mobile outreach to the chronically homeless.

IS THE NEED FOR SERVICES HIGHER AT THE HOLIDAYS?

It’s not that it’s higher, but the highest stress on a family is during the holidays. When you’re a family living paycheck to paycheck, barely making it, you don’t have that buffer. For us, it’s bigger than giving a holiday meal. What you have is hope, because your community wrapped around you. We don’t just hand out boxes. We have someone sit with you and say, “I really like your dress. How are you going to cook that today?” It’s about the community wrapping themselves around families who are already stressed and taking that stressor off them.

If you know someone in need, or would like to volunteer or offer help, reach out to Metro Ministries at metromin.org or stop by the Family Support Center in Holiday.

West Pasco Family Support Center 3216 US-19, Holiday, FL 34691  (727) 937-3268

Open weekdays 9am – 5pm

The holiday tent offers services at Generations Christian Church at 1540 Little Road in Trinity in November for Thanksgiving and in December for Christmas.

Would you like to donate for the holidays? Doner Lane at the holiday tent in Trinity and Tampa opens November 4th. Here’s what they need most:

• Frozen Turkeys & Hams

• Cereal

• Canned Yams

• Cranberry Sauce

• Peanut Butter

• Canned Fruit & Vegetables

• Boxed Potatoes & Stuffing

• New Toys & Games

• Teen Gifts ages 13-17

• Gift Cards for Toys and Food

• Cash Donations

Visit the website for detailed wish lists and restricted items. When donating toys, Metro recommends stretching your budget with less expensive toys than donating one or two expensive items.

WHAT DOES THE HOLIDAY TENT OFFER THOSE WHO NEED HELP?

The tent is like a mini grocery store. We have childcare, so parents can shop on their own. When the families come in, they’re greeted, sit down in the hospitality area, and then somebody personally shops with them. We shop with every single person. There is a list, but you get to choose. Who am I to tell you what your family will eat? We want to feel like a grocery store. We wanted to have that dignity. That’s absolutely crucial for us. And the same with toys. Every parent wants to provide for their children. These gifts don’t come from Metro. They come from the parents, and that’s very important as well. We’re taking that stress away. We’re allowing them to be parents, to do all things they want to do for their kids.

There are two main tents, one in downtown Tampa and one at Generations Christian Church in Trinity. There are also pop-ups throughout three counties - the same experience, but a drive through. We serve 400-500 families in one afternoon. Last year, we served 32,000 families for the holidays.

WHAT CAN WE DO AS A COMMUNITY TO HELP?

Any level of help. Nothing is too small. Nothing is too large. Metropolitan ministries could not do anything without volunteers. It’s absolutely the lifeblood of this organization. You can come and volunteer, either in the tent or all year long, at any kind of level that you would like. Specifically, the Pasco tent takes 50 volunteers per shift, three shifts a day to work. So, we need everybody, and we want you to come and experience it and really connect with people.

You can do a drive to collect toys, or food or anything on our wish list. You could send a note out to your book club and instead of giving gifts to each other, collect a gift for a teenager.

You can also make a financial donation. We have a lot of donors who also offer matches so we can multiply the benefits of your donation. We can buy things in bulk at a much better rate, like turkeys and hams, but we need the community support to do that.

There’s no right or wrong way to help. It’s whatever speaks to you. We’re operating a village here. We need all the things!

THANKSGIVING FLORIDA STYLE

As the holidays draw near, entertainers are making plans for how best to welcome friends and family for holiday meals and parties. In Florida, we’re lucky to have balmy warm weather and access to outdoor living spaces that many friends and family members up north only dream of.

A spacious, well planned outdoor area to entertain in, especially during the holiday season, is truly a blessing for homeowners. Jereme and Katie Carter of Saltwater Pools have been building and curating custom luxury pool spaces

for years and know exactly what it takes to create an outdoor environment that’s not only beautiful but exceptionally functional. “If you want an outdoor space where you can entertain, you need covered seating and outdoor cooking spaces,” shared Jereme Carter. “You also need to make sure your patio has adequate space, with the pool away from the house, to provide areas for people to spread out and mingle.”

Beyond well-equipped outdoor kitchens and thoughtfully planned dining spaces, small additional

details can truly make a big difference for both entertainment and enjoyment year-round. “Make sure you put some type of elevation in, possibly a water feature for sound, or fire for color and natural elements. Visually, you’ll want to consider color contrast as well,” said Carter. “In the end, you want your own peaceful space where you can enjoy the serenity within your backyard.”

Outdoor living allows you to expand your entertainment space to include the outdoors and make your home even more inviting when hosting family and friends. Offering several areas for both conversation and dining will amplify your available space and leave your guests clamoring for a return invitation.

A HOME for the HOLIDAYS

When Pasco County Animal Services became a no kill shelter, it faced mounting expenses to find homes for all the animals overfilling their shelter. Friends of Animal Services was created to help stem the tide and work to help find pets loving homes and take care of those still waiting for their forever home. Michael Shumate, Director of Pasco County Animal Services, shares how they help and how you can too!

HOW DO FRIENDS OF PASCO COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES HELP FILL YOUR BIGGEST NEEDS?

It costs a lot to get animals healthy enough to adopt. They come with hair loss, skin disorders, maybe a broken leg or with parasites. Many come in with heartworms, and that’s costly. It takes a while to get animals healthy enough to clear for adoption. Friends have provided additional medical instruments, equipment and medications to get those animals treated, and give them a much higher chance of getting adopted.

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY HELP?

We need adopters to give the animals a chance. We currently have close to 200 dogs and well over 50 cats in our care, all looking for loving homes for the holidays.

Visit fpcas.org to learn more about how you can donate or volunteer to make a difference in the lives of animals who need a loving home. You can also find donation boxes at the shelter. This is a volunteer organization, and all funds go to help the animals.

Visit pascocountyfl.net/ services/animal_services to see the animals available for adoption today!
