CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Midtown. We whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats in this issue so you can spoil your loyal companions. Because we love to walk with our pets in Midtown, we have given you some tips to keep what they pick up outside, outside.  As for the kids, Cooking is fun and easy with the help of Young Chef's Academy. Chef Terry Koval's Opening in Decatur The Deer and the Dove and B-Side, two new restaurants from the acclaimed Atlanta chef Terry Koval, recently opened in the historic downtown Decatur square. The cuisine pays homage to the bounty of the region’s surrounding farms and local purveyors. With many items coming out of a wood-burning oven and grill, the menu is rustic, creative New American cuisine.

Summer Beer Fest Historic Old Forth Ward Park was the site of this year's festival. Guests got to sample from more than 200 beers featuring local Atlanta Breweries and great breweries from all over the country. There was also wine, live music, a DJ tent, vendor booths, games and more.

“OUR MISSION IS TO TEACH CHILDREN THE JOY AND VALUE OF COOKING.” —LYNLEE BRADLEY

AFTER GRADUATING FROM LE CORDON BLEU COLLEGE OF CULINARY ARTS IN ATLANTA, LYNLEE BRADLEY WANTED TO DO SOMETHING THAT INVOLVED COOKING, BUT SHE WAS ALSO INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN. So, when she heard about Young Chef’s Academy, she knew she had found the perfect fit. After working there for two years, she and her husband, Austin, opened their own location in 2015. Now having been in Midtown since 2017, where she was born and bred, she feels like her dream has come true. “Our mission is to teach children the joy and value of cooking,” Lynlee says.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

(CON TI N U ED)

Every month, there is a theme, and every week a different recipe. Each class is divided into age groups, with kids as young as 3 years old. Besides cooking, they learn cleaning, organization, food and prep safety, math, science and social skills. Lynlee believes that introducing cooking skills at a young age also helps children develop a sense of healthy nutrition and finds that they are more likely to eat something they make, even vegetables. Kids who would never eat spinach now love it. “It’s really nice to be one of the reasons why these kids understand healthy eating,” she says. And the children learn real cooking skills; it’s not just for fun. One of her former students, 12-year-old Quani Fields, was a runner up on Gordon Ramsay’s Master Chef Junior show on Fox. Another graduate, Tyron Sudler, now works at Barcelona Wine Bar as a chef.  The Academy also hosts school field trips, helps Girl and Boy Scouts earn their cooking badges  and has  a cooking camp all summer long. Plus, they offer a Young Chef at Heart program for adults only.  16

EARLY

LEARNING THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR FUTURE CAREER SUCCESS ARTICLE KERI STOLTZ

22

Midtown Lifestyle | August 2019

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON IS UPON US, AND AS PARENTS TURN THEIR FOCUS AWAY FROM SUMMER CAMPS AND SWIMMING POOLS, THEY BEGIN TO SHIFT THEIR THOUGHTS TOWARD THE SKILLS THEY SHOULD BE NURTURING IN THEIR YOUNG CHILDREN AS THEY HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL. Among the earliest of these skills are language, reading and motor skills. However, a recent survey revealed that another set of skills may be just as important to develop early in life to give children the foundation they

need for future success. According to a national survey of human resources managers responsible for hiring, problem-solving; critical thinking; teamwork; self-control; adaptability and working memory (collectively referred to as executive function skills) are essential to succeeding in today’s workplace. In fact, survey respondents agreed that these skills are more important than good grades, technical skills and other factors when it comes to hiring.

2. PROMOTE CRITICAL THINKING BY ASKING THOUGHT-PROVOKING QUESTIONS.

Yet, the majority of those surveyed said that entrylevel employees are rarely proficient in executive function skills and agreed that they are difficult to teach.  These statistics may sound worrisome, but encouragingly, executive function skills actually have their foundational roots in early childhood. The Harvard Center on the Developing Child reports that children’s early life experiences influence their capacity for executive function skills,

3. ENCOURAGE TEAMWORK BY LEADING BY EXAMPLE.

and laying the foundation for such skills is one of the most important tasks of the early childhood years. Nurturing the executive function skills needed to succeed later in life doesn’t have to be difficult—try the following fun activities for children at home. Develop problem-solving through play. Children work through their understanding of the world as they play. For example, when children play with blocks, they learn that

4. CULTIVATE SELFCONTROL BY GIVING INSTRUCTIONS.

putting heavier blocks on top makes block towers tumble more quickly, but putting heavier blocks on the bottom makes the tower stronger. Promote critical thinking by asking thought-provoking questions. Whether you’re playing with blocks or at the grocery store, ask your child simple, open-ended questions like, “Why do you think…,” and, “What if…,”

5. NURTURE ADAPTABILITY THROUGH DRAMATIC PLAY.

to inspire deeper thinking. Be sure to give your child plenty of time to answer the question and refrain from giving the answer yourself. Encourage teamwork by leading by example.  Children learn how to respond to others mostly by watching their parents and caregivers. Make it a point to model behaviors like listening and being respectful at home.

Cultivate self-control by giving instructions. Instructions don’t immediately sound like much fun, but singing songs like the hokey pokey and playing games like Simon Says actually encourage self-control by requiring children to move in a specific way at a particular time. Nurture adaptability through dramatic play. Children can practice adaptability, the ability to take in and adapt to new information, by using everyday objects in new ways, like turning a paper towel roll into a telescope. Foster working memory by reading aloud.  Consistently reading aloud with children reinforces sounds and letters, helping them learn and store information in a way that feels more like play. Take things a step further by making up a story together. As the complexity of the story grows, your child will get more practice remembering the information. By intentionally nurturing these skills during the first five years of life, parents and caregivers can help set children up for success that will last a lifetime.  To learn about Primrose School of Midtown at Colony Square, visit PrimroseMidtown.com.
