the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, trips to the lake and pool parties. We always look forward to celebrating our nation’s independence. For us in town, that means the Peachtree Road Race, notable this year as it marks the 50th year of the race. We spent some time in this issue in celebration of that. Atlanta is home to one of the most famous painters in the nation. When you think of Patriotic images, think Steve Penley. It was an honor and a true pleasure to be invited into his studio. Surrounded by paint and paintings, we got to learn more about him and his effortless talent—and wit. I think our cover looks like he has painted himself into a painting, and we came to find out that is a goal of his—"to make people feel like they are actually in one of my paintings," Steve says. Enjoy July in Midtown! Summer flies by fast, so make it last. Better yet, find a lake to jump into.

According to Jay, the oldest participants right now are a 94-year-old man and a 94-year-old woman who run the race every year. Randy Stroud, 64, from Acworth, is running his 47th consecutive race. “I started running back in 1968, so I've always been a runner. I train year-round, so Peachtree is a race that I always look forward to and prepare for,” says Randy. There is also a wheelchair race held beforehand. Since 1984, the Atlanta Running Club has partnered with the Shephard Center in Atlanta, one of the most well-known rehabilitation centers in the world. This is strictly an elite race with professional racers and is one of the most prestigious wheelchair races in the world. To honor the country’s veterans and military who will be participating, Jay says they have issued them a commemorative race number design so people will know who they are. He encourages everyone who sees them to shake their hands and thank them for their service.  Another way they are celebrating their 50th anniversary is by awarding $50,000 to anyone breaking the record in their division. The record, held since 1996 in the men’s division, is 27:04; for women, held since 2002, the record is 30:32. For the wheelchair contestants, the men’s record since 2004 is 18:38, and for the women, since 2009, is 22:09. If one of the wheelchair racers breaks the record, it will be the highest payday ever for a wheelchair athlete in any race around the world, says Jay. Custom-made Frabel glass peaches will be awarded to the top three competitors, a tradition dating back to early 80s. The winner will also receive $10,000. Ty Ragan, from Brentwood, has run seven races and will be running again this year. “Initially, I signed up back in 1998 as a celebration for losing weight and getting into a healthier lifestyle. I was about 80 pounds overweight and when I first started running, I couldn't complete a quarter mile. But by 1998, I was able to run more consistently and felt the iconic AJC Peachtree Road Race was the best way to celebrate achieving my goal,” he says. The course itself closes at 11:30 a.m., but the fun doesn’t end there. There is a party at Piedmont Park where every finisher will receive a Peachtree Road Race t-shirt. “We are committed to making running and walking an accessible sport for people of all ages and abilities, not just through the more than 30 events programs we put on every year, but also by community engagement and being a running and walking resource for schools, groups and communities across the area,” says Jay. To learn more about the history, people and traditions of the race, visit PeachTree50.com and sign up to receive their emails. Hosted by the Atlanta Track Club, they’re posting 50 stories in 50 weeks.

(CON TI N UED)

“I love Atlanta people. It’s my crowd,” Steve says. He donates scores of paintings to various charities and organizations in and out of Atlanta and feels it’s a particular honor to support those that assist active members of the military and veterans. His other joys in life are his talented children—Lyall, Abbey and Parker. “I don’t know where they derive this talent because they really never ask me tips about art. While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than coldpressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skinsafe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

WE ASKED THOMAS EYE GROUP TO SHOW US WHAT THE HOTTEST TRENDS ARE IN SUMMER EYEWEAR. We sat down with Dr. Reddy to find out the importance of wearing Sunglasses— fashion aside! "Sunglasses are a stylish addition to our summer wardrobe, but as an ophthalmologist, I find them to be a summer necessity for the following reasons," says Dr. Reddy.

30

Midtown Lifestyle | July 2019

1. ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT PROTECTION – "UV light is harmful to our vision and actually  can accelerate the

01

formation of cataracts and worsen retinal conditions such as macular degeneration. UV light is often reflected off of bright surfaces in the summer, so wearing sunglasses with UV protective coating, I feel, is essential for eye protection." 2. POLARIZATION — "When light reflects off of hard surfaces, it has a tendency to scatter all over the place. The light rays that are reflected horizontally off of car dashboards or off the road while driving can actually cause a lot of glares. This impedes a person from seeing clearly while driving and can actually lead to safety issues. Polarized

02

sunglasses basically have an extra coating on their surface to eliminate the effect of these horizontal reflected rays and greatly decrease issues from glare on a bright sunny day." 3. BURNS — "Bright sunlight can actually cause burns in the retina and lead to permanent loss of central vision, so sunglasses, especially in a bright reflective environment, can help provide protection against this." "While shopping for sunglasses," concludes Dr. Reddy, "I would definitely recommend making sure they have UV protective coating and are polarized. Sunglasses are

03

appropriate at any age. If you wear prescription glasses, you can actually get sunglasses with your prescription built into them."

GIVING BACK

Beautiful Friendship POLO IN THE PINES, OCT. 5-6

MADISON WILLIAMS WAS 16 WHEN DEBILITATING HEADACHES AND NAUSEA SENT HER TO THE ER. A week later, she had a brain tumor removed and began her fight against grade III anaplastic ependymoma, the malignant form of brain cancer that affects the cells that line the brain and its ventricles as well as the spinal cord. Today, more than three years later, she continues to suffer daily side effects from the radiation to her brain. Still, she has graduated high school and finished her freshman year at the University of North Georgia studying for a career as a neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon or biomedical engineer. Her goals include affecting positive change in the lives of children who, like herself, have been diagnosed with brain cancer or other forms of childhood cancer. When Madison met Caroline Brewer, they bonded over their cancer-driven bald spots, caused by the same type of cancer. Caroline was the 2018 Polo in the Pines Honoree and this year, the event will honor Madison and her fight. Polo in the Pines is an exciting annual charity polo event dedicated to The Sharon McCollum Knight Polo in the Pines Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
