LIFESTYLE LETTER

Home Sweet Home “HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS.” It’s a common phrase meaning that our homes are a central place in our lives—where we rest our heads, nourish our bodies and make fond memories with loved ones. It’s the epicenter of our worlds, where we start and end each day, and where we keep our most prized possessions.

This month, we bring you our Home issue, which is full of ideas for creating the best environment wherever you call home. We teamed up with one of our favorite Midtown interior designers, Stephanie Andrews, along with her talented group to show us what’s new for home decor in 2019. With springtime upon us, there’s no better time for a little DIY project!

In this issue we also take a look at the design of some Midtown practices. To many, the office is the home away from home, and these important spaces are warm and inviting. Whether it’s artwork well-chosen or color schemes to create a relaxing and calming environment, much goes into designing these important spaces. We hope this issue inspires you to appreciate the place you call home—both your personal dwelling and our shared community—whether you’ve just moved or it’s a place your family has occupied for generations. Here’s to home sweet home!

SCOOTER REGULATIONS The Atlanta City Council recently approved rules requiring scooter companies to prevent the popular form of Midtown transportation from being randomly placed on city sidewalks. In addition, permits will need to be obtained to operate the businesses. The city now requires scooters be parked upright on sidewalks in a manner that allows pedestrians five feet of space.  Safety concerns were also discussed regarding helmets, speed limits and education of local laws.   Rebecca Serna, executive director for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, told the council she shared some of the safety concerns regarding electric scooters. But Rebecca said the riders

She found a lot of it at Atlanta’s Mart where designers can go to find all sorts of treasures. She will also sometimes go to the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center, which is

another great resource for designers. “Modern is having a big comeback,” Cristina says. “In Atlanta, a lot of the new buildings are ultra-modern, very Miami.” However, even though her style is contemporary and she gravitates more toward the clean, streamlined look, she feels that there are really beautiful ways of doing traditional design. “What’s in and out is all relative,” she says. She tries not to follow super trends, because then she’s just setting herself up for being outdated within 10 years. Cristina likes to mix it up. She doesn’t think having one solid style is very interesting. One thing she has noticed recently is that designers will buy a really cool antique piece and refurbish it to make it look more new-age. Since antique furniture was built so well, and it’s really hard to find good solid furniture nowadays. Giving it an updated look is a great way to make it fit while being functional. Cristina had a great time redoing her husband’s office and gets a lot of satisfaction from knowing how much he and his patients enjoy it.  She and Brock, who met in college in Tallahassee, have been married for close to eight years, have two children—Brock Jr., 6 and Pierce, 4—and live in the Buckhead area. One day, when the children are older, Cristina hopes to be able to give more time to her and Ursula’s interior decorating business. Until then, she’ll enjoy going into her husband’s office and seeing the beautiful transformation she has made.

should do is put things away. Finding a spot for everything will give the room a clean, fresh look.

USE NATURAL MUTED TONES FOR

WALLS AND FURNITURE. For fun pops of color, use throw pillows or throws. If you’re going to buy something really funky, try not to spend too much money on it because you’ll likely get tired of it after a while. You can get then get rid of it without feeling guilty. Afterward, you will once again be left with that original blank slate and can change it up according to your new style or current trends. Cristina says this is what she did with the office and the same thing she does with her own home. Her furniture is gray, white and taupe, so that way she can reinvent it whenever she wants.

IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN AND/OR

PETS, COVER YOUR FURNITURE AND WALLS WITH FABRICS AND PAINT THAT YOU CAN WIPE OFF. Also, avoid white and keep fabrics on the darker side which will camouflage stains. Look for places that offer COM (customer’s own material.) There are stores in Atlanta where you can buy unfinished furniture and then pick out the fabric you want on it, either in that store or from another one. This way, you can get easy-toclean and durable fabric on the furniture that fits your room and style.

that can function as another room and can be used nine months out of the year in Atlanta. Also, according to Pauline, instead of having one giant club room, they separated out many different areas so it’s designed like a big cruise ship. There’s a great sky terrace with a kitchen for small, intimate parties and great views of Midtown. Another kitchen can also be found down by the pool, so residents can have summer pool parties with their friends and families. “The beautiful pool has nice shaded areas too and designed where each of the little areas is intimate, so you’re always going to feel like you’re sort of in your own home and not just in a big complex,” Pauline says. For something a little quieter, there’s a huge, beautiful green courtyard with comfortable seating and hammocks so residents can feel like they’re in their own little park. For fun, there is also a room with a pool table. Inside the condos, there are wide-open floor plans with well-appointed kitchens and J5

Well-adorned walls

WE TEAMED UP WITH MIDTOWN INTERIOR DESIGNER STEPHANIE ANDREWS AND HER TALENTED GROUP AT BALANCE DESIGN TO GET SOME IDEAS ABOUT WHAT'S NEW FOR HOME DECOR IN 2019. WELL-ADORNED WALLS Bold, colorful wallpaper layered with fun and unique art makes a space sophisticated but approachable. Try this in a dining room, bedroom, library—really pretty much anywhere! CURVED SEATING In 2019, we’re looking for a little softness in design, and curved seating is like a visual hug. Nothing says “hey, hi, come sit down, relax, it’s all good” like a sofa that can gently cradle you. The best part about pieces like this? They fit in so many styles! MODERN PASTELS Pastels seem to flit in and out of fashion, but this color palette of mint, blush and mustard yellow is modern and refreshing. These hues are often utilized as support for darker and bolder colors, and we’re happy to give them their time to shine! Adorning a sleek, modern space with these softies will instantly transform the feel from harsh to happy. DEEP, DARK CABINETRY As shades of green, navy  and warm wood stake their claim as the new “neutrals,” we see more and more people venturing out from the classic all-gray or white kitchen and bath color palette. This migration toward adding a bit more depth and personality is seen on walls, built-ins and cabinetry. MODERN ART DECO We’re talking extravagant architectural elements, mixed metals  and luxe materials. Inspiration from the '20s has waltzed back into the design world with a modern attitude! This fresh mix creates an aura of opulence without stuffiness by allowing quirks and individuality to ARTICLE KATE RILEY

shine through. Giving us the freedom to be as over-thetop and “extra” as we want to be, modern art deco is a bold way to ring in 2019. STATEMENT TILE LAYOUTS We love a striking statement tile, but sometimes it can be scary to go all out with color. Not to worry! This doesn’t mean you’re relegated to same old, same old looks for your kitchen or bathroom. A fun way to get creative with tile is playing with the layout. Chevron or herringbone patterns are always a cool go-to, but we’re really loving multiple directions, varying sizes and bold grout. Let's talk about how this relates to the challenges of life in Midtown.

THE RUDDERMANS ARE NO STRANGERS TO THE MIDTOWN COMMUNITY. Having met who would one day be his future wife, Jennifer, in New York, Randy had to convince his bride to head south to Atlanta. That was two decades ago, and she was looking for the urban style of life she loved. She found it in Midtown, and that is where decided to call their new home and where they have resided ever since. Even back then, they loved the ability to walk to dinner and the park.  It was much different 20 years ago than it is today, Dr. Rudderman says, but they always loved the sense of community, the arts and the spirit of their neighborhood.

NOW OPEN (CON TI N U ED)

This is one of the main reasons Dr. Rudderman wanted to expand his practice in his neighborhood. When he learned that Northside was opening a prominent medical facility, he knew it was a natural expansion of his practice.  Since 1989, Dr. Rudderman has been in private plastic surgery practice in Atlanta, focusing on the full range of aesthetic procedures: eyelid surgery, breast augmentation and breast lifts, liposuction, abdominoplasty, facelifts and facial reconstruction, among others. Dr. Rudderman’s research and practice, together with the influence of his wife, Jennifer, a fashion designer who is the founder and CEO of a highly successful line of fine jewelry, have led him to view the role of plastic surgery in a manner that allows him to connect with his patients in a unique way. Dr. Rudderman believes that to give the best advice regarding plastic surgery, the surgeon must understand and balance the patient’s desire, body frame and genetics, along with both patient lifestyle and the culture of fashion. “Fashions in clothing and plastic surgery share the same basic purpose: to modify, conceal and accentuate, in keeping with the trends of the time,” he says. “The plastic surgeon must seek a precise balance for each patient. On the one hand, procedures performed should be in concert with fashion-driven cultural norms, while remaining sensitive to how both those norms, and the patient’s body, will change over time. Changes to conform to fashion, however, should not conflict with the natural form in any way.”
