HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

(CON TI N U ED)

In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.

Red

For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries

Purple

Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets

Green

Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas

Orange

Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches

White

White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips

Black

Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries

The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

FOUR TRENDING WORKOUTS TO HELP YOU STICK WITH YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

TRAIN HARD, RESTORE HARD ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY ROBBIE CALLENS, NANCY FLOYD AND PROVIDED

18

Midtown Lifestyle | January 2018

TRAIN HARD, RESTORE HARD ERIC PYNE EP FIT EricPyne@EPFitATL.com Eric Pyne has been a personal trainer in Atlanta since 2008. He currently trains his dedicated clients at Urban Body Fitness. He is an ambassador for Lululemon and leads classes with the Sweat Series at Ponce City Market. In 2018, Eric will have his clients training hard with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that involves a burst of activity followed by rest or recovery. He trains individuals from all backgrounds, catering each workout to their specific needs and desires with a never-ending variety of strength and cardio moves that make the session fly by. “Everyone benefits from HIIT,” Eric says. With quick bursts and fixed periods of less intense activity, it has great effects. For starters, you will burn more fat as the exertion will bring your body repair cycle into hyperdrive, resulting in more fat and calories burned. Also, you will increase your metabolism as it stimulates human growth hormones more than any other fitness activity. Finally, HIIT helps bodies maintain muscle mass while losing weight.

“We’re very much a family here. We plan member appreciation parties and know everyone," Zay says. "We have conversations about nutrition, stress and how exercise fits into overall good health.”

Sometimes, workout routines that are cardio-centric may help take the pounds off, but at the same time may also reduce the muscle mass in your legs and arms that you have worked so hard to keep. Eric is a former CrossFit competitor and champ and has a comprehensive understanding of the many options a gym and training session has to offer. He plans to open his own fitness facility in 2018. Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled for EP FIT. LESS TIME IN THE GYM Zay Dickens

LESS TIME IN THE GYM

Anytime Fitness 1375 Peachtree St. NW AnytimeFitness.com Anytime is a good time to hit this comprehensive gym that’s open 24/7 to members. While this compact gym in Midtown offers every piece of equipment you’ll need for a full-body workout, it’s the fastpaced classes that are taking off. The Core Blast, ShredCamp and noon high-intensity interval training classes appeal to professionals who pop in from adjoining and nearby high rises to squeeze in a serious 30-40 minute workout. ShredCamp challenges with interval training with a focus on cardio, strength conditioning, balancing, core strength, endurance, speed and agility. Zay Dickens is the facility's general manager and applauds members for making their time in the gym count. “Members want to make the most of their time in the gym, and the HIIT and Tabata training we offer appeals to them,” Zay says. Another trend? Community. Anytime Fitness offers body composition analysis free to members every eight weeks with their InBody 270. Fresh detox water, full locker rooms and classes six days a week make this urban gym very user-friendly.  CONTINUED >

THE CORE 20

Midtown Lifestyle | January 2018

YOGA ISN’T ALWAYS QUIET ALL ABOUT THE CORE Exhale Spa 1065 Peachtree St. NE ExhaleSpa.com The newest class at Exhale is the Core Fusion HIIT. The high-intensity interval training class will move you through five power stations: TRX, weights, gliders, plyo boxes and core balls. Short active recovery breaks in between will keep your heart rate high and the quality of your workout at a maximum. The sequences change every month, so the workout—and the challenge—stays fresh. A trend in cycling continues to grow and Exhale turned a regular cycle class into a results-oriented, balanced workout to keep you centered with the Core Cycling class. Push past your limits on the bike as you conquer hills, jumps and sprints on this endorphin-filled journey. The ride ends with soothing stretches to optimize your training. This Zen-like space at Loews Atlanta Hotel helps the journey continue, with spa amenities, a full gym and luxe locker rooms. Work out, then book a spa appointment to treat your mind, body and spirit.  YOGA ISN’T ALWAYS QUIET Westside Yoga 857 Collier Road NW #5B WestsideYoga.com Try a dance party-style Energize class with a more creative flow and louder music which helps focus the mind on the music and push away distractions. The Flow Combo yoga class includes a 30-minute hot, sweaty workout with dance music, and a 30-minute stretch and meditation session with relaxing music following. The bottom line is that folks want their yoga to be fun and restorative. Another big trend is Yoga Immersion and Teacher Training, says Atlanta’s own Amber Barry, founder of Westside Yoga. More and more people are curious about the Eastern traditions and want to know how to live a yogic lifestyle. A four-month course that meets every other weekend teaches students yoga philosophy, pose alignment, mindfulness, meditation, Ayurveda and more. Teaching since 2001, Amber inspires total body wellness with her healthy and relatable approaches to yoga. Yoga helped Amber reclaim her life after a near-fatal car crash in 1998, and her recovery was so miraculous that it inspired her to quit her job and dedicate her life to

In 2018, she expects power yoga classes will continue to grow in popularity as more students realize that yoga can help us have fun, lose weight, get in shape and train our mind to be more present. living

spaces

continue

to

become more important to homeowners every year. Fireplaces, daybed swings and even upholstered and dining furniture offer a lot of comfort, and you can actually place them outdoors. HOW CAN A HOMEOWNER CREATE A TRANQUIL SPACE IN THEIR HOME? The best way to create a tranquil space is to paint the walls and trim the same color. You can also paint the walls in an eggshell finish and the trim in a satin finish. When you walk into the room, you might not be able to put your finger on what is so soothing, but it is the consistency of the paint color. A lot of homeowners have a difficult time with this, thinking the trim should be a contrast to the walls in a glossy white but that doesn’t always have to be the case. WHAT DO HOMEOWNERS STRUGGLE WITH? Homeowners tend to struggle with spatial planning. It’s so important to create a furnishing plan to scale before selecting pieces. I wish homeowners realized the importance of completing a room. I’d like them to think about furnishings, window coverings, lighting, pillows, art and accessories and more. A room is perfect and beautiful when all the details are completed. The home featured is the home of Sean & Stephanie McCarthy. Stephanie is a broker for Sotheby's, Atlanta Fine Homes.

CONFESSION TIME TRAINER CONFESSIONS WITH ZEUS LUBY ZEUS LUBY LIVES UP TO HIS NAME. He rules the gym, though, instead of Mount Olympus. For the last 20 years, he has been training clients throughout Midtown and beyond. Midtown Lifestyle caught up with him recently to learn more about the man behind the muscles.

FAVORITE CHEAT MEAL: WINGS! “Though it’s super rare that I eat this, my favorite cheat meal would have to be my mother’s hot wings with her home-cut fries. I could eat that combination until I pass out!”

CLIENTS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW: I LOVE UNHEALTHY FOOD. “I absolutely love all the unhealthy foods I rail against in my nutritional diatribes: fried chicken, pizza, burgers, wings, fries, etc. There’s a general misconception that living a healthy lifestyle means you must dislike calorie-laden foods. On the contrary, many of us fitness-focused folks steer clear of them because we like them so much.”

SECRET TO TRAINING SUCCESS: NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL TRAINING “Each client is unique, so they require varying motivational fuel. I seek out the most important component of their lives and build a bridge from those components to their state of fitness. Once that connection is made, they tend to push harder and dig deeper.” MORE ABOUT ZEUS Zeus Luby is a passionate health and wellness professional and CEO of Olympian Physiques who has been pouring his exceptional experience into helping clients achieve their goals. Zeus is also a passionate life coach,  artist, author, motivational speaker, tech developer, actor  and founder of a nonprofit organization. He is most proud of being a full-time father to his 14-year-old daughter, Zada. Learn more at OlympianPhysiquesLLC.com. 34
