Happy Holidays!

DECEMBER 2017

F

inally, the most magical time of the year has arrived. While the holidays are doubtlessly a magical time around the globe, there is something about the quaint Midwestern atmosphere of Medina County that just feels extra special around this time of year. Perhaps it is because certain areas, like Medina Square and Downtown Wadsworth, could easily make picture-perfect model train towns. Victorian storefronts are outlined by lovely lights, their vintage windows finely frosted, and locals are bundled up tight in these lovely areas. In the background, the roar of a train can be heard, but so, too, can distant holiday music. Like a scene out of a movie, these areas feel warm and glowing, making spirits bright with their undeniable charm.

RIVERSTONE TAVERNE WHEN THE WEATHER GROWS COLD, NOTHING IS AS WARM OR INVITING AS CASUAL COMFORT FOOD.

"I

ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES

'm an electrical engineer, my wife is a software consultant," explains Bruce Iacovelli,

who owns Riverstone Taverne with his wife Joyce Hicks. "We had a passion for food and decided to become restaurateurs in 2007." When the Riverstone Taverne opened in Valley City, it delighted locals with its high quality, made from scratch meals. Nothing delights like familiar food with fresh high quality ingredients, realized Iacovelli, and he and his team set out to create a welcoming menu composed of American comfort food with a delicious twist.  "We take familiar food and do it one step better," says Iacovelli. "Our staff roasts chicken, turkey, and corned beef for sandwiches, and seasonal fruits and vegetables are purchased from local farmers markets. When you're using good, fresh, quality ingredients, you don't have to do a lot to make them flavorful."  8

Medina County Lifestyle | December 2017

WHEN YOU’RE USING GOOD, FRESH, QUALITY INGREDIENTS, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO A LOT TO MAKE THEM FLAVORFUL.

Such elegant simplicity is reflected in the stunning décor of the cozy restaurant, which has been located in Brunswick since 2014. Its lodgelike setting creates an inviting atmosphere, complete with candle chandeliers, a soaring stone fireplace, and masterfully mixed woods, that perfectly complements the comfort food your palette craves. "We aim to keep the menu exciting without going over the top," says Iacovelli. "Our Taverne Cheeseburger, homemade meatloaf, and pasta prove that simple ingredients go a long way."  The homey and inviting restaurant allows Iacovelli the opportunity to interact with customers, where he receives feedback that allows his staff to build their menu around tried-and-tested fan favorites. An updated menu appears two or three times a year, debuting creative comfort foods that will please even the most discriminating foodie.  "My favorite dish is the Grilled Salmon," admits Iacovelli, offering a glimpse into the creative passion that fuels the Riverstone Taverne. "Simple, wild-caught fresh Norwegian salmon paired with either Pico de Gallo, Bourbon Orange, or Maple Soy sauce."  Though the food always takes center stage, weekly events are also a commodity at the Riverstone Taverne. Every Wednesday, patrons can participate in an unforgettable trivia night. On Thursday nights, guests can participate in a music Bingo night that pairs perfectly with a fresh, warm meal. And the Bingo night prizes aren't too bad either; a Riverstone Taverne t-shirt or gift certificate await those with a lucky streak.  Whether you visit Riverstone Taverne on an event night or just for an intimate family dinner, your experience is sure to be memorable. Great ingredients speak for themselves, and a rustic restaurant setting offers a most desirable escape from the cool and dreary autumn weather.  Located at 5288 Center Road in Brunswick's Drug Mart Plaza, Riverstone Taverne is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Sundays, the restaurant is open from 1 to 9 p.m. For a menu, visit RiverstoneTaverne.com.

Nestled away at  260 South Court Street at the southern end of Medina Square is a lovely little church, a quaint structure that dates back to 1867. Though it appears petite from the street, its facade conceals 40,000 square feet of spectacular holiday wonder, flawlessly preserved in the most celebratory of ways.  Those who have never set foot within the walls of Castle Noel can hardly comprehend the splendor that the former church contains. The holiday museum is open year-round, displaying actual Hollywood props and costumes from Christmas classics like  Elf  and  Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  It also fea-

tures spectacular window displays from New York City, stunningly crafted decorations that would have otherwise been thrown or stored away and forgotten. "Mark and I did Castle Noel in two different destinations before we found our permanent home in Medina," says Klaus. "Mark is an artist on a completely different level. He wanted to create his own attraction, and he first designed and debuted a holiday attraction over in Hinckley in the 1990's. That year, 20,000 people showed up. It was only 6,000 square feet, small enough to test the waters." It was safe to say that the Klaus family had found their niche. Which is no surprise, considering that Klaus is Mark's God-given surname, and he sports a big white beard reminiscent of one famous jolly old elf. Christmas

As Castle Noel is open year-round, new decorations and props are constantly making their way to this museum. However, it is always bigger and better than ever during Medina's most magical season. As the Square comes to life with warm lights and the sweet aromas of coffee and hot food, a new spark is introduced to Castle Noel. Their 25 foot tall Christmas Tree seems more stunning than ever, and the movie props seem less Hollywood and more magic. "When we sought a permanent home for Castle Noel, we wanted it to be in a beautiful city that felt like you were going somewhere truly special. The Square exudes charm, and its restaurants are incredible. The town is absolutely beautiful, and whether you are driving from 10 minutes or 10 states away, it just feels like the picture-perfect Christmas town." If Medina is the penultimate Christmas town, Castle Noel is its crown jewel. This charming museum is overflowing with must-sees, including one ceiling that absolutely glitters and gleams. "My favorite attraction here at Castle Noel is the 100,000 glass ornament ceiling. You can see it 1,000 times, and it will still be breathtaking. We adore that sense of wonder. No matter how old you are, we want you to feel like a kid again." Castle Noel offers locals and visitors alike an opportunity to indulge themselves in Christmas spirit, making it one of Ohio's loveliest places to visit during Winter Vacation. Magical Holiday Memories: Medina Tree Farm ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES

“W

e don't sell trees,” explains Charles Albert Reichheld III, Ph.D, who locals affectionately know as “Doc,” of the Medina

Christmas Tree Farm. “We sell a Christmas experience.” For decades, locals have been visiting this magical farm in anticipation of the holiday season. It has become a tradition to stop by the dreamy, snow-covered farm nestled away on Hamilton Road each holiday season. And why wouldn't it be? Read the next paragraph and close your eyes. Go ahead and dream, I'd like to paint a picture for you. Imagine stepping out of your car as glistening snowflakes fall and melt against your warm windshield. The air smells of campfires, which the kids and staff call Warming Stations, and also of kettle corn. An 11 acre farm stretches as far as the eye can see, cloaked in a gentle frosty white. You grab a hot choc-

olate and head out into this winter wonderland to select your tree, and as it is being bailed the kids head off to feed the barnyard animal. You select some handmade wreathes and freshly produced pine roping that you and the kids will hang later. And, all the while, keeping watch over the farm in a nurturing manner is a picturesque Depot. “We help people establish a tradition,” explains Doc. “It's all about having fun and building a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Don’t be left in the dark this winter!

A visit to the farm will engulf you in a selection of premium trees. You can select a tree straight from the field, or choose from a pre-cut section brought in by other local farmers. The trees range up to fifteen feet in height, offering an impressive selection that caters to everyone's holiday needs. And, on the weekends, burgers, hot dogs, French fries, both cold and hot drinks and even deep fried Oreos will be available. “It doesn't matter if you're Paul Bunyan or the highest paid individual at the office,” says Doc, allowing his tone to change to reveal humor. Doc is a Professor Emeritus of Economics, and as he speaks, he eloquently weaves a yarn that instantly captivates. “Your Christmas tree is special. It's going to be on show, so it should look great and you should love it. Whether you are CONTINUED >

SCARLET TRANSPORTATION: THE GIFT THEY’LL NEVER FORGET ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES

W

ith the holidays right around the corner, many find themselves scrambling for last minute gifts. But how do you choose the per-

fect present? It is hard to gift clothing, as sizes may be wrong or the fit may not be right. Knick knacks just pile up, and nobody wants to kick off the New Year feeling cluttered. What about gifting an experience, something that will make memories that will be cherished for years? Scarlet Transportation & Adventure Tours is all about making memo-

ries. The business found its start three years ago when avid wine drinkers Eric and Judy Defibaugh decided to buy a bus one day.  "We enjoy trying local wines and touring local wineries," explains Eric. "I had my CDL, so we decided to start offering winery tours on the weekends. It was an opportunity to let friends relax and enjoy a scenic cruise to wineries, where they could sample local wines and enjoy a behind the scenes look at production." It all started with a small bus and an idea, but now it has grown to include two buses, one that seats 24 and one that seats 27, and a variety of tour options that can be customized to quench your thirst for adventure.  "Our goal is to expand awareness of what is hiding in Ohio," says Judy. "We offer a winery tour, a brewery tour, a waterfall tour, a lighthouse tour, and a few other seasonal specials. We can customize the tours depending on group preferences, and the bus can also be rented for events such as weddings, concerts, and birthday parties." Bus tours offer an incredible way to experience Ohio like never before. Winery and brewery tours consist of 3 stops, with tastings included, and typically include at least one facility tour per trip. The  Scarlet Transportation team knows the most amazing attractions throughout the state, and they enthusiastically pass on that knowledge to their guests. But, at this time of year, they offer one spectacularly magical tour that has become a family tradition to many.  "From November 24 through December 30, we offer a Christmas Lights Tour," explains Eric. "One year, we loaded our large family onto the bus and went out to look at lights. We had so much fun that we decided to offer it to the public, and it has truly become something special." Many will choose to exclusively rent the bus and take a tour with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for years 20

Though Amy has only been with the company for four years, she has a certain energy about her that is infectious. “People like to know where their food comes from, and unlike most caterers, we are able to cut out the middle man. We buy our products from the Mount Hope auction and bring them to our stores, equipping us with the ability to cater at a reasonable price. YOU WILL NEED: • A 14” straw or Styrofoam wreath form found at floral and craft stores • Around 12 yards each of 4 different but coordinating ribbons of varying widths and textures • A chenille stem to make the hanger, found at craft stores (looks like a pipe cleaner) • About 50 to 75 fern pins, found at floral and craft stores (looks like a long staple or hairpin)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Next, twist the chenille stem around the wreath to form a hanger (Fig. 3). Now, create several bows of various ribbons, with the loops being about the same size. Leave the tie ends as single “tails” and cut the loose ends into a swallow tail. You may also create single loops and tails to fill in between bows (Fig. 4). Pin the bows and loops and tails onto the covered wreath form with the fern pins, pushing the pins through the center point of the bow or end of the loop and tail (Fig. 5).

First wrap the entire wreath form with a wider and simpler length of
