say what they mean without having that adult filter, their imaginations and creativity are endless and their sense of wonder is refreshing. As those childhood years turn to adolescent years, they begin to formulate their worldview and make sense of the things around them. They start to make decisions about what they want to stand for and what they want to contribute to the world around them. It is also a tough time of insecurities, emotions and trying to figure out who they are. Like all families, my own four children are all so different from one another. They each have unique gifts and struggles. Something beneficial and somewhat unexpected to me has been watching how much of an impact having a family pet has made on my children. I knew it would help them learn responsibility, but I have been surprised by some of the other ways that the addition of our trusted dog, Stella, has made on their lives.   She has been the perfect companion for them. She is a source of comfort when hard times or loss has occurred, big or small, as I have watched as my kids were soothed by

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS SPACE AND WHAT THE GOALS WERE WHEN STARTING THE PROJECT ON YOUR SON'S ROOM. I wanted to design a space for him that would allow his curiosity and his imagination to grow. I didn’t want bulky furniture taking up most of the room, so I choose this fun open bed frame to begin my inspiration.  WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION COME FROM FOR COLOR SCHEME AND THEME? I built the colors and theme off of his pre-existing room but wanted to develop it more and make the look complete by adding a few key elements such as the bed, wallpaper, and rug. The main elements were the black and white, natural wood elements, and an outdoorsy adventurous theme. I wanted to add color and worked with the orange accent pieces we already owned. WHAT TEXTURES OR PATTERNS HELPED MAKE THIS SPACE DYNAMIC AND INTERESTING? The wood planked wallpaper adds so much texture — it’s so realistic looking. I love mixing patterns, and the rug is such a dynamic piece in here. These are two of my favorite additions in here and they make a huge impact. DID ANY PART OF THE PROJECT START AS ONE THING AND END UP GOING ANOTHER WAY THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS?  The gallery wall space that includes the bulletin board and toy shelf evolved as I put the room together. I had a few different options as to what should hang on that wall, and after trying a few different combinations, this is what I settled on. Nearly every project I do evolves and changes somehow, and that’s when the fun creative challenge begins! CONTINUED >

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PIECES IN THIS SPACE? The bed frame really steals the show and is the focal point of his room. We gravitate here with all the kids to read before bed. It just feels so cozy, and it’s easy to pile in with the bed being on the floor. When he gets older or needs a regular bed frame, this can be used as a fun place for toys in the playroom or homework station with a desk inside. This project was a fun one.  I didn’t start from scratch but used many things we already owned. I always suggest to shop your house first and see what you  can use before buying new. I even pull things from other rooms and repurpose them to give them new life.

NORTH PARK VILLAGE

ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

NORTH PARK VILLAGE IN LEE’S SUMMIT OFFERS THE BEST OF SUBURBAN LIVING IN AN URBAN ENCLAVE. Located north of Highway 50 off Todd George Parkway with easy access to retail, dining and fun, this new home development has it all. With homes and floor plans in a variety of sizes, styles and design options to choose from, this new community truly has something for everyone. “North Park Village is a mid-sized community designed and developed by award-winning Summit Homes to satisfy a rapidly growing need for new homes that are both competitively priced and centrally located within the Lee’s Summit North High School zone,” says Darren Merlin with Reece Nichols. “With limited new home development in this zone struggling to keep pace with a large number of buyers looking to expand and move up from the areas aging existing homes, North Park Village presents a “right place at the right time” opportunity for buyers to achieve their new home goals without having to completely relocate from the nearby amenities they love.” Residents choose to live here because both the builder and neighborhood stand out among others in the area.  “Summit Homes’ variety of floor plans and features in the Lifestyle Collection satisfies a widely diverse buyer demographic, providing a convenient and streamlined process for selecting options and upgrades that strengthen buyer confidence in the end product and deliver a gorgeous home at a competitive price among its builder peers,” Merlin says. “Buyers choose North Park Village for its exceptional access to schools, recreation, shopping, dining and services. Speed to destination is important to everyone, and North Park Village delivers on that by offering homes and build sites that are less than seven minutes from the majority of priority external amenities. It also offers a smaller and more intimate community of what will only be 92 homes total, providing a more restful atmosphere that facilitates and encourages neighbors to connect with and get to know each other more than they might in a community that spans a much larger geographic area.” Summit Homes is focused on the latest designs and features tailored to fit your needs, proving they are focused on quality, not quantity.  “There are currently seven inventory homes available for move-in in less than 45 days and each has their own unique attributes and appeal. The number of inventory homes CONTINUED >

has deliberately been kept at a low level due to our focus on delivering the best experience possible to the 20 families and individuals who have already purchased build jobs or already moved in. That said, we have 23 home sites still available in the first phase of the community and 15 different floor plans available to build and each with multiple front architecture styles,” Merlin says. Within minutes are award-winning schools, a public library, daycare facilities and several other outdoor amenities. “The community pool is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed this summer. North Park Village is also directly connected by sidewalk access to the Legacy Park sporting complex and sits less than seven minutes from Lake Jacomo, Pleasant Lea Lake, Happy Tails Dog Park and James A Reed Memorial Wildlife Area.” Next year will bring the completion of the second and final phase of the neighborhood. “In 2019, future residents will have 40 home sites to choose from as well as one of the largest collections of competitively priced new homes on the market.” For more information contact Darren Merlin at Reece Nichols at 816-896-0995 or visit summithomeskc.com.  20

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

introducing

ashley corbello

ASHLEY CORBELLO, A GRADUATE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI, IS A LOUISIANA-BORN, REALIST PAINTER OF PET PORTRAITURE. Her works are a collective group of elements mixing a celebration of bright colors, a resonance of life in the subjects rendered, and built upon a genuine foundation of personal joy, borne from her love of her own pets and her work with local animal rescues. Her work is influenced by the works of Philip Burke and Greg Manchess (whom Ashley had mentored under). From a technical standpoint, each of her works begins with gathering reference, visual and informational, to planning the layout with at times intricate patterns of her own design. She weaves together typography, modern aesthetic design, and color usage with the main subject and conveys the personality of the pets she portrays. She approaches each painting this way, whether it's a new addition to her highly popular “Conversation Series,” or a private commission from any of her patrons. Her paintings are a celebration of life, or a life well-lived in memorial. “People know and love their animals, through old photos, through intimate moments, and a in life of memories. Pets enrich this Lee’s Summit Family’s World in Countless Ways HUGS, KISSES, FEATHERS, HONEYCOMB AND FUR BABIES! These are goodies that fill special moments for John and Stacy Epema, along with their three children, Lucie, 11, Ethan, 9, and Mollie, 6. When not attending school at Summit Christian Academy in Lee’s Summit, they play a variety of sports, including baseball, ice skating and more, and care for their menagerie of critters. John, an emergency physician in the KC Metro area, and Stacy, who has a background in elementary education and is currently a stayat-home mom, both grew up with pets and have always understood how they complete a family. They recently moved from Lee’s Summit to a home just east of town. “It has always been a dream of John’s to have a wide-open space to call home and enjoy the great outdoors,” Stacy says. “We now have 35 acres!” They continue to increase their variety of pets. First, they added Rosie, a Cockapoo, and Zimmer, a golden lab. Rosie had five puppies, and Stacy and her children treasured that experience. “The charm of puppies can never be denied, and as a child, I remember how sweet it was to watch their mother having them and caring for them,” Stacy says. “I wanted to give that memory to my children, so when Rosie went into labor at 2 a.m., I woke all three so they could witness the miracle of life. They enjoyed watching the puppies change and grow, and they had fun weighing them each week and creating charts to monitor their growth until we found forever homes for them at eight weeks.”

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2018

Rosie and Zimmer love the new space to roam, and Stacy said they recently purchased a chicken coop and eight baby chicks that are growing into hens. (They should be laying eggs soon.) The Epemas chose a variety of hens, which has sparked an interest in the children to read books about raising chickens -- the different varieties and their life cycle. “Each morning they open the coop and make sure the chickens have fresh food and water…they have a science classroom in their backyard!” she says. To further grow their little family, the Epemas recently acquired two Huacaya Alpacas as pets, named Noelle and Naddie. Noelle is 19 months old and Naddie is 13 months. She explains, “Alpacas are native to Peru and are primarily raised for their fleece, which is incredibly soft and luxurious. They have such sweet faces and are adorable pets to have in our field.” Frosty, their new Llama, is nine years old and stands guard over Naddie and Noelle. Stacy learned that Llamas are guard animals that instinctively posture themselves to threaten and deter predators. Her children spend time each day caring for them and enjoy bringing books and chairs into the field to read with their special furry pets. Stacy and John recently added beekeeping to their list of fun outdoor activities. They have started two hives that currently house approximately 20,000 bees each. “I have attended a couple of beekeeping conferences and have a mentor to assist me to reap the rewards of watching the fascinating complexity of bees. We have adult-sized and child-sized bee suits so we can all be involved. I truly believe animals can help develop empathy in children, as they consider the feelings of another when reading the pets’ needs,” Stacy says. “We hope the experiences of all these pets will help equip our children with lifelong skills to become responsible, caring adults.”

Divorce Financial Statements: Do Not Overstate or Understate Values Stange Law Firm, PC

In a divorce, courts are to divide marital property in a just manner when considering all the factors in an equitable jurisdiction. To divide marital assets in a just manner, courts need to know the value of the marital assets as well as the debt. As a preliminary matter, parties are generally asked to file financial statements with the court. In the financial statements, parties are to list all the marital assets and debts. This provides the family court judge an overview of what marital assets and debts exist. The exact procedure in terms of how this works can certainly vary by state and locality. Different states and counties can have different forms, deadlines and nuances. However, in a general sense, parties are often asked to provide an approximate value for all marital assets early in the case. Marital assets can contain almost everything from the house, cars, investment accounts, retirement accounts, business interests, trust interests and an endless array of other assets. For many parties, this can be quite difficult. They might not have had a recent appraisal giving an exact value for a particular asset. Thus, when they are asked to provide a value on their financial statements, they might not know how to answer.

This can lead to parties essentially guessing as to a figure to complete the financial statements. There are two mistakes that parties might make when attempting to list a value of a marital asset in which they do not know the value: Mistake one is overstating the value of the asset. In other words, they list the marital asset at a significantly greater value than it is actually worth. This can be the case with various assets. However, as it relates to larger assets, like the marital home, business interests or other large assets, over estimating what an asset is worth can be a big mistake that can skew the property division in an unjust manner. Some parties can make the opposite mistake. They may underestimate what certain marital assets are worth. This can be a big mistake as well that can skew the property division. Ultimately, courts need accurate values for marital assets in order to make a just division. If the assets are overvalued or undervalued, the court is not going to be working with accurate numbers. If the numbers are not accurate, the court can end up dividing assets in a way that would appear just to the judge, but is not actually just when looking at real figures. Further, when a party underestimates what a value is worth as well, courts can sometimes think

that a party is doing that on purpose in order to hoodwink the court on the value of a particular asset. This can oftentimes hurt the credibility of a party. If a party does not have a recent appraisal or valuation, what most parties ought to consider doing is having the asset formally appraised first by an expert. If the party is able to do so by local rules, they might state that the “value is unknown at this time” until such time as that valuation is completed. Either way, parties need to be careful not to overestimate or underestimate the value of a marital asset in a divorce. Doing so can cause an adverse result for a divorcing party. • Pure white kitchen cabinets enjoyed almost a decade of popularity. Grey and blue tones are expected to dominate, as well as rich darker stains. • Consider off white with distress- aging details instead of pure white tones. • Quartz is one of the most popular choices in countertops. Stunning color options and rich vein details will transform your kitchens in seconds. No stain, no maintenance, antibacterial surface are added bonuses. • Colorful sinks like greystone and chestnut are on high demand. • Bold black or champagne finishes on faucets and handles are highly coveted. • Big islands remain prevalent as they allow for easy meal prep. • An experienced interior designer will be able to marry your wants and needs, capturing your spirit and incorporating “your style" while keeping up with the trends. 1 2 6 0 N W S L O A N , L E E S S U M M I T, M I S S O U R I 6 4 0 8 1

(CON TI N U ED)

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2018

Mike is the director of Love and Hospitality! His main job is to give and receive love all day long. He works in the SMILE Zone (St. Michael Inclusive Learning Enhancement Zone.) Peer Mentors, who are seniors and juniors, work with students who have special considerations and teach different life skills to them "with" Mike. The students learn responsibility, empathy, patience and many other virtues. Making friends and patience come naturally with Mike. He is currently going through a formal training program, “Sit Means Sit,” and will eventually learn 10 to 12 commands. The Peer Mentors are in charge of working with Mike and the SMILE student. They teach the SMILE students to care for him in many ways. One thing they started was giving him a SMILE SPA each week. Giving the puppy a bath is now a big hit in the SMILE Zone. They also take him potty and give him treats when he has done good things. They are learning to read his cues and anticipate his needs, just like friends do.   St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School is located at 2901 N.W. Lee’s Summit Road, Lee’s Summit, MO  64064.

GIVING BACK ARTICLE NATALIE FIELEKE

PROVIDING FOR PETS WAYS TO HELP NURTURE KIDS’ HEARTS FOR ANIMALS IN-NEED

IT SEEMED LIKE A SIMPLE ENOUGH PLAN: GO TO THE PET STORE. Purchase fish tank water neutralizer. Go home. But our five-minute visit soon turned into a longer, more emotional trip as my son began naming mice to bring home, and my daughter fell in love with Bowser, a handsome tuxedo cat. On the ride home, tears streamed down my daughter’s face because we didn’t adopt her kitty. My son couldn’t understand why it wasn’t a good idea to bring home his newly beloved mice, Twinkle and Roxie. The fact that we already have a kitten and a fish didn’t matter to my kids. All they knew is that they loved animals, and they wanted to do more to help them. So I reached out to several Kansas City-area organizations that provide assistance to needy animals and rely on the support of volunteers. They shared ways we can all realistically help, short of bringing all the fuzzy little creatures home to live with us forever. (Sorry, kids!) Keep in mind the following non-profit organizations require volunteer training and a supervising adult for children. Each has its own policies for volunteers’ safety. Please check online for specifics.
