LIFESTYLE LETTER

JANUARY 2018 PUBLISHER

Laura Paszkiewicz | Laura@LifestylePubs.com

Letter from the Editor HAPPY 2018! It’s the start of a new year, which, for me, always means considering what changes or goals I have for myself. I usually have several house projects on my list (which unfortunately tends to carry over sometimes from the previous year’s list), and I always have a few personal goals as well.

Sometimes when looking back on my previous year, I feel like I fell short on what I wanted

to accomplish. Life happens, and occasionally the things that I thought I needed to do or

wanted to have time for, just didn’t come to fruition. But, not always is that a bad thing. Now, I’m going to be really honest and say that my fitness goal was not reached (in the slightest), but other goals that I thought I wanted for myself morphed into something entirely different. I took on different projects that ended up being a lot of work, but well worth it. I also cut some activities out that ended up being a healthy thing, regardless of it being something I enjoy. It’s okay to divert from the things we think we really should accomplish or do because sometimes we don’t know what we need. We did something crazy as a family this winter that is not the norm for us. I have four very active kids ranging from age 8 to 15, and between my husband coaching soccer for three of my children and all of the other sports and activities that we are involved in on a

moving quickly, and we are too busy. We did the “unthinkable” and took the entire winter off from almost everything for all four children. It feels weird. It feels good and very refreshing. Initially, it was an adjustment to not have every weekend filled with games back to back all day, because I love watching my kids play sports, and they love playing. Even so, it has been nice to enjoy each other and is just what we needed, even if it is just for a season.

BRAIN BALANCE CENTER BRINGS HOPE TO LEE’S SUMMIT FAMILIES ROXANNE AND AARON EVANS’ SON, RYAN, STRUGGLED HIS WAY THROUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Nearly every school day brought new relational distress with other students and another trip to the "focus room" for discipline. Years of counseling sessions seemed to have little to no effect. The family had reached an impasse at helping their son when Roxanne heard an advertisement for Brain Balance Achievement Centers on the radio.

“RYAN WAS AT THE POINT WHERE HE SAID ‘SOMETHING INSIDE ME IS BROKEN, AND YOU NEED TO SEND ME AWAY TO HAVE IT FIXED,’” ROXANNE SAYS. “THAT TORE AT OUR HEARTS TO KNOW HE FELT THAT WAY, AND WE WERE WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TOOK TO HELP HIM.” The Evanses brought Ryan for an assessment at Brain Balance of Overland Park, enrolled him in the program and, within weeks, began to see an amazing improvement in their son. Such improvement, in fact, that the Evanses wanted other families in their community to benefit from having a Brain Balance center closer to home. They purchased a franchise, and in May 2017 they opened the Brain Balance Center of Lee’s Summit at 413 NW Murray Road, just off Chipman Road and U.S. Route 50. Brain Balance of Lee’s Summit is a true family business. Roxanne is the center director. Aaron, a police sergeant, coaches students in the sensory-motor area and talks with parents when he’s not on duty with the Lee’s Summit Police Department. All four of the Evans boys have completed the Brain Balance program and help out at the center with motivating and encouraging other kids currently in the program. The Brain Balance program is a nonmedical and drugfree approach to overcoming the challenges of ADHD, CONTINUED >

learning disabilities, processing disorders, Asperger’s syndrome and a host of other related childhood learning and developmental issues. The integrated approach developed by neurobehavioral specialist Robert Melillo addresses the whole child by integrating sensory motor training and stimulation and academic activities with nutritional and dietary guidelines. "A lot of people know the brain controls the body. However, in development, it is the motor actions of the body that drive the underlying brain function with neuro behavior disorders,” Aaron says. “Which means if our children aren't hitting milestones at the right time, that can lead to auditory, behavior, academic, social and/or emotional disorders later on." At Brain Balance of Lee’s Summit, an in-depth assessment enables program director Lauren Nelson and seven coaches to work with children ages 4 through 17 to develop a personalized program meeting each child’s needs. Following the assessment, students enroll in individualized programs three hours per week. Each hour consists of sensory-motor and academic skills training. While the number of sessions is specific to each child, the typical program last about six months. The program also consists of at-home daily exercises and a clean-eating nutrition system. The center provides performance reports every 12 weeks at parent conferences, and center staff reach out to work with children’s classroom teachers. A performance review takes place approximately one year after a student completes the program.  Not even a year after opening their center, the Evanses can see fruit in the vast array of challenges they’ve been able to help children and their families overcome. “The fact that we can bring hope to families has been such a blessing to us,” Roxanne says. “We’ve seen families restored and peace and calm brought back to homes. People who couldn’t go out in public before due to children’s behaviors and tics can now do activities as a family.” The success of Brain Balance program approach is also manifest within the Evans family. Today Ryan is a well-adjusted eighth-grader who has made a change in how he’s able to manage and approach life, says his father.

“THE PROGRAM DRAMATICALLY CHANGED HIS PATH AND GAVE HIM THE CONFIDENCE TO GO INTO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT,” AARON SAYS. “WE’VE SEEN A HUGE CHANGE IN HOW HE’S ABLE TO MANAGE AND APPROACH LIFE.” For more information on Brain Balance of Lee’s Summit, visit @BrainBalanceLeesSummit on Facebook. 14

HEN WE WERE BUILDING OUR HOME 10 YEARS AGO, I HAD A DREAM OF INCORPORATING A

SUNROOM PORCH AFTER REAL-

IZING THAT THE HOMES I LOVED

INCLUDED THEM. I have always loved

the character, the mix of rustic brick and

large open windows letting in tons of

natural light. Most importantly, I loved the idea of basking in the warm sun and my bare feet on the warm bricks. I wanted a retreat. A getaway. A spot where I could be surrounded by all of my favorite things. I had hoped to design a room that felt warm even during our cold winters. We made a conscious decision to eliminate stereo and TV access to that room. It would be my quiet, relaxing and tranquil space.   To complete my room with everything I loved the most, I would need to paint it blush pink and white. Thank goodness I have an accommodating husband!  How many men would allow a huge pink room like this in their house? This room has been a fun room that I can surround myself with my favorite things. Windows overlook wooded acreage from every angle and sunsets that change nightly. It is filled with decorating books, paint swatches, collections of design ideas, family photos and antiques collected from childhood.   My mother helped me to start a collection of miniature cups and saucers, and then I fell in love with romantic rose plates. I have always been enamored with old black and white family photos and adored the classic style, so adding current family photos to the walls in black and white was a fun way to mix the old and the new.   What makes my room warm and cozy is the fluffy, silky gray rug on top of an all-brick floor and a few layers of textured throws and pillows. Even with the light color scheme and the overwhelming amount of natural light, the room is still the coziest in the house. Adding candles is the final touch that makes a room comfortable and fragrant. Vanilla, lavender and mint are favored in the sunroom. CONTINUED >

Healthy Eating Resolutions MEAL PREP TIPS TO SAVE YOU TIME IN THE KITCHEN WE’VE SWEPT AWAY THE SUGAR COOKIE CRUMBS, GOOGLED HEALTHY RECIPES GALORE AND VOWED TO MAKE A FRESH START WITH CLEAN EATING IN THE NEW YEAR. But let’s talk sustainability, and I don’t mean how thoughtfully our organic fruits and vegetables are sourced. Exactly how long are we going to stick out this healthy eating plan of ours? Over the past two years of January Whole30 resets, I’ve bemoaned how much time it takes to prepare from-scratch meals sans grains, dairy, sugar and legumes. But during these dietary resets, I’ve also honed time-saving meal prep habits that help make clean eating sustainable past the first month of the year. If you come into my kitchen, you’ll realize I’m not preparing elaborate dinners every night. But I am cooking meals with clean ingredients and saving myself time in the process. For me, spending a few hours on meal prep a few times a week— rather than every night—has resulted in a shift in my thinking and in clean eating becoming a lifestyle rather than a resolution. I hope these ideas help you as well! On the weekend, sit down and bust out all those recipes you pinned. Plan your menu for the week down to breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. When you’re on a new and specific diet, it’s helpful to have it all plotted out and written down. Once you have your new go-to favorite healthy meals on lockdown, you’ll have the confidence to mix things up a little. Dice and spiralize vegetables and store them in lidded glass containers to easily cook up on a weeknight. With a few exceptions, all vegetable noodles will store in the fridge for up to four days. Don’t do white potatoes ahead of time, they oxidize (turn brown) when cut.

all great roasted and reheated. Make a veggie-packed crustless quiche (or two) as breakfast for dinner one night. Eat it for breakfast the next few days. Prepare a large cut of meat, such as a roast, pulled pork or whole chicken, for dinner one night and repurpose leftovers the next night. Shredded leftover meat is a great topping for cauliflower rice burrito bowls (for me) and tacos or burritos (for my kids). Adding beans enhances the meal’s protein and stretches it out. Make a big batch of soup and store leftovers in Mason jars for grab-and-go lunches throughout the week. Prep a layered lunch. Portion 2 tablespoons of your dressing of choice in the bottom of a wide-mouth Mason jar. In order, layer on hard veggies, soft veggies, cheese/ meats, grains/pasta, toppings and greens. The key is to keep the dressing away from your greens. Properly layered salads will store for three to five days in the fridge. Freezer meals can be your best friend. Hear me out; I’m not talking scary casseroles here. Using the book From Freezer to Table as a guide, in October, I made one meal and was able to swap six other meals with a group of friends. This is life-changing, I tell you. Grab some recipes, get a group of friends together and have your

WORKOUT BREAKDOWNS ARTICLE KATHRYN LEO

BOOT CAMP, CROSSFIT AND HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING

38

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | January 2018

///////

///// FOR MANY OF US, THE NEW YEAR IS THE PERFECT CHANCE TO IMPROVE OUR HEALTH AND FITNESS AFTER THE INDULGENCES OF THE FESTIVE SEASON. But for some, starting an exercise program with all the choices can be overwhelming. To simplify things, we have broken down some popular workouts to help you find the best workout for you. Some of these can be done at home while others work better at the gym.

BOOT CAMP, CROSSFIT AND HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING BOOT CAMPS can vary, but usually they include a fairly intense mix of strength training and aerobic elements.  In most cases, expect to do calisthenics as well as drills and sprints. Basically, it is a type of interval training—bursts of intense activity alternated

OR TRX SUSPENSION TRAINING

with intervals of lighter activity. CROSSFIT focuses on constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements that include calisthenics, plyometrics and aerobic exercise like running and swimming. It attempts to optimize physical competence in each of the 10 domains, which are cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT) is a form of interval training with short periods of anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. A common formula involves a 2:1 ratio of work to recovery periods. For example, 30-40 seconds of hard sprinting alternated with 15-20 seconds of jogging or walking.

TRX OR SUSPENSION TRAINING Suspension training using bodyweight exercises is for any level of fitness enthusiast. It develops total body strength, endurance, core stability and flexibility.  The best part is the equipment can be used anywhere.

AQUATIC FITNESS Besides lap swimming, many gyms offer aquatic fitness classes which are great for cross-training and variety. They can be deceptively challenging because water offers 12 times the resistance of air.  Equipment such as aqua fins, barbells, kickboards  and noodles can increase the intensity.

YOGA, PILATES AND BARRE YOGA, PILATES AND BARRE There are many types of yoga, an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the mind, body and spirit. Here are a few types to help you determine which one might be best for your fitness needs. VINYASA:  In this yoga, students coordinate movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. Ashtanga yoga, Baptise yoga, Power yoga  and Prana Flow could also be considered Vinyasa. YIN:  This is a passive practice and involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for three to five minutes. BIKRAM:  This is done in a room heated to 105 degrees, and classes consist of 45 minutes of standing poses and 45 minutes of floor postures. PILATES: Pull out your gym mat and get ready to do a series of movements that will stabilize and strengthen your core. These exercises are usually done in a specific order, one right after the other. It has a strong mind/ body connection so you might like it if you enjoy yoga but need a more intense core workout. You can do these exercises at home and use a DVD or go to a Pilates class.

CYCLING

What can bank statements show in a divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

In a divorce, there is a lot of information and evidence that a court may look at in terms of helping ensure a just result. One piece of evidence that can become important is bank statements. Some courts may order the parties to exchange bank statements voluntarily. In some cases, the parties may agree to exchange bank statements by consent. And in other cases, the parties may issue requests for production upon each other to produce bank statements. In some instances, the parties in a divorce may have jointly titled all their bank accounts. In other instances, the parties may have had separate bank accounts during marriage. This can lead to different levels of concern in some cases — and different levels of need to exchange this information.

What can bank statements show? Why can they be important in a divorce? These are questions many would ask. As it relates to spousal maintenance and child support, bank statements can show deposits into an account. In cases where the income of the parties is a disputed issue, this can be particularly relevant. This can be true where there is commission based income, tips, rental income or income from secondary employment. Bank statements can also show spending habits. These spending habits can be important in determining the expenses of parties in a divorce. These expenses can be important to spousal maintenance and to child support when the expenses relate to the children. Parties might need to show fairly recent bank statements. However, it might be useful to go some period of

time backwards in terms of looking at bank statements. Different facts can lead to different needs in divorce cases. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life.
