So here we are: 2019. In the spirit of new beginnings, I’m grateful to introduce myself as the new owner/publisher of Leawood Lifestyle! This past April I was chatting on the sideline of a soccer game when I learned the publication was looking for someone to take the reins. I had represented large corporations as a litigation attorney for almost 17 years, the last couple of which I had been considering retiring from the practice of law. I was tired of the adversarial nature of the litigation process. I wanted a career that would bring greater fulfillment. I wanted to celebrate and promote the good in our community. And I wanted to confront the confusion, negativity, and heartache that pervades our society with a narrative that says, “Spread joy. Give love. Chase the light.”          I am happy (and, to be frank, a little nervous) to say that day is here. I plan to use

CORPORATE TEAM

Leawood Lifestyle as a platform to celebrate and promote the good stuff. My hopes

you, as a reader, how deeply I hope to do this thing well. I welcome your thoughts as

to whether I’m succeeding. If you have something to share — a story or just a hello — please, email me. Don’t be shy!  Though I cannot guarantee that I’ll never make the wrong call, I can guarantee this: I will work to spread joy, give love and chase the light. I will listen. And I will be open.

WHEN ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER SOLD IN 2015 TO PRIME HEALTHCARE, IT WAS NOT THE EASIEST OF TIMES. whether its Catholic heritage that existed for well over a century would be abandoned. Fast-forward three years, and St. Joseph Medical Center is not only winning awards for its world-class commitment to high-quality healthcare, it is also deepening its spiritual mission and strengthening its compassionate outreach. “We are moving forward and laser-focused on growth, quality care, and our community,” says Jodi Fincher, chief executive officer at St. Joseph Medical Center. “I am incredibly thankful for the support that St. Joseph Medical Center has received from Leawood, the Chambers of Commerce, and the overall community.” Fincher says that in the past three years, more than $30 million has been invested in capital improvements at St. Joseph Medical Center, including the most recent opening of the 22-bed Senior Behavioral Health Center, the purchase of the NAVIO Orthopedic Robot for joint replacements, as well as new and emerging state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and protocols. “Our goal to provide `World Class’ service is a goal our entire team takes seriously,” Fincher says. “Saving lives is

We are equipped with a highly skilled physician base, nursing staff, support services, spiritual care department, volunteers, and in conjunction with our Catholic identity, we treat the body, mind, and spirit.” Fincher says that St. Joseph Medical Center seeks to deliver compassionate healthcare and continues its commitment to justice and charity. “We provided over $6 million in charity care and over $21 million in uninsured discounts in 2017 alone,” Fincher says. “At the heart of our Catholic identity is a belief in God’s love and Jesus’ 14

healing ministry. I appreciate the relationship we have with the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr., and the Sisters of St. Joseph-Carondelet. They are truly wonderful relationships and have helped guide our mission to improve healthcare in our community.” During Fincher’s tenure, St. Joseph Medical Center has received significant accolades that include Leapfrog A Safety grade, Healthgrades Gold Plus patient safety award, accreditation of its Sleep Lab, CMS 4-star rating, and national recognition for its STEMI and Chest Pain care. Fincher says St. Joseph Medical Center is the first and only facility in Kansas City to have purchased a surgical system called the NAVIO. This orthopedic robot uses state-of-the-art technology to equip surgeons with accuracy and precision in joint replacements, resulting in faster recoveries, reduced risk of infection and lower costs. Another notable addition is the Senior Care program that has won two community awards – one from the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce (Impact Award) and the Grandview Chamber of Commerce (BIGG Award). St. Joseph Medical Center is the first hospital in Kansas City to launch a comprehensive Senior Care service line including a senior friendly emergency room, senior-focused inpatient program, and an outpatient senior clinic. “I take pride in my leadership team and frontline staff who have achieved these awards and who remain resolute in our focus addressing future needs,” Fincher says. Fincher adds that Prime Healthcare has a proud history of transforming financially distressed hospitals into thriving community assets. “St. Joseph Medical Center is a testimony of that. Our growing family of hospitals across the United States is dedicated to improving healthcare and adding value to the lives of patients, physicians, employees and communities.” Prime Healthcare has emerged as one of the nation’s leading hospital systems, named a “15 Top Health System” by Truven with hospitals consistently among the “Top 100 Hospitals” in the country. Fincher states that Prime Healthcare’s philosophy is that all healthcare is local: “Each of our hospitals serve the unique needs of their communities while providing exceptional care with the strength and support of Prime Healthcare.” A former nurse, Fincher says that she takes great pride in the compassionate and top-quality care St. Joseph Medical Center delivers. She especially enjoys interacting with frontline staff and patients: “It keeps me grounded on why I got into healthcare in the first place -- helping others. The part I enjoy most about my position is the impact I’m able to make at all levels. Whether approving a new blanket warmer so patients are comfortable, or hiring a new physician to expand our services, it all comes down to serving our patients, employees and our community.” Fincher says that 2019 promises several major renovation projects yet to be announced, but she hints at the forecast. “I see several awards, accreditations and service expansions,” she says. “The future of St. Joseph Medical Center is bright and full of growth.” JODI FINCHER RN, BSN, CCRN-K, MBA, FABC Chief Executive Officer St. Joseph Medical Center 1000 Carondelet Drive, Kansas City MO, 64114 www.stjosephkc.com. 16

WHEN THESE HOMEOWNERS DECIDED TO BUILD THEIR NEW HOME, THEY KNEW THEY WANTED IT TO BE INVITING, UNIQUE AND COASTAL. “We went to Seaside, Florida a few years back and fell in love with the coastal styles of the houses there,” the homeowner says. “We love the stained but not painted cedar shingles, the exposed rafter tails, natural stone and of course the standing seam roof details. We also re-used the parts of our last Old Leawood house we loved. We just modernized and expanded on them, like the outdoor seating, outdoor kitchen and lots of natural light and windows. We also added lots of doors to open the house up for parties on nice KC nights.” Some of their favorite features of this home include all of the walnut accents and details. This includes the front doors, fireplace, powder vanity, wet bar cabinets and backs of the basement bars.  The LED lighting throughout is also amazing, not only in the wine room, but the basement bar, master bath cabinets and glass kitchen cabinets. “We also love the expansive mud room and paneled entry and office. This home is a great blend of traditional exterior and transitional interiors,” they say.

“IT REALLY HELPS TO BE INCREDIBLY ORGANIZED WHEN RENOVATING OR BUILDING A NEW HOME. RESEARCHING PHOTOS ONLINE OR IN MAGAZINES CAN REALLY HELP YOUR BUILDER OR CONTRACTOR MAKE YOUR DREAMS A REALITY.

Leawood Lifestyle | January 2019

The exterior elements blend well together. The stone, brick porches, grey stained cedar shake siding and the standing seam metal roof portions make for a great combination. And the pool lends to the surfside feel. For those thinking of remodeling their space, Molly Koenigsdorf of KOENIG Building + Restoration, says, “It really helps to be incredibly organized when renovating or building a new home. Researching photos online or in magazines can really help your builder or contractor make your dreams a reality. For a large-scale custom home, frequent meetings at the project to ensure the project is staying on schedule and any outstanding decisions are being made is helpful. Communication is key to making sure what you envisioned is what is being implemented.” When asked their favorite room in the home, the homeowners emphasized that it is definitely their kitchen, saying, “The giant island is the heart of the house where all the great family interaction, conversations and meals happen. The second one is the outdoor space with fireplace. Sometimes it is just nice to be outside, throw on the heaters and start a fire.” With ocean waves resounding in their minds, no doubt. “LASIK is one of the best ways that patients can invest in themselves to improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Milton Grin, M.D., F.A.C.S., owner of Grin Eye Care. “Refractive Lens Exchange is a lesser known option for patients who are tired of using readers. It’s a similar procedure providing incredible results.” Dr. Grin has been at the forefront of refractive surgery technology nearly his entire career. A leader in the LASIK industry and dedicated to continued education and best practices, Dr. Grin has earned the respect of his patients and colleagues. In 2019, Grin Eye Care will celebrate its 30th anniversary with 60 employees at three locations in Kansas City. With its friendly, inviting offices designed to make every patient feel relaxed and valued, Grin Eye Care is consistently voted as Best Eye Care in the area.   Dr. Grin, along with his partners, Dr. Barbara Wolock, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Dr. Jeff Wongskhaluang (“Dr. Wongs”), M.D., M.S. are some of the most trusted names in eye care in Kansas City. “Dr. Grin is one of the pioneers of LASIK in the Kansas City area,” says Dr. Wongs. “We are proud of the high level of eye care that we provide and the positive feedback we get from patients.”

Artisan Kombucha ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS

ARTISAN KOMBUCHA IS KANSAS CITY’S CRAFT KOMBUCHA BREWING COMPANY WITH A PASSION FOR HEALTHY HOLISTIC LIVING. Using organic and local ingredients for the highest quality kombucha, it is proudly brewed in small batches using organic loose-leaf teas, herbs, spices and real fruits and vegetables without any juices, concentrates or chemical additives. The result is a satisfying raw unfiltered beverage full of nutrients, enzymes and probiotics. Owner Ben Bash’s successful kombucha business was inspired by his dedication to health. “I have loved making things from scratch and working with my hands my whole adult life,” Bash says. “I'm extremely passionate about health and am currently in school to be a nutritional therapist, so naturally I love eating healthy, and I push how important digestion is to everyone who is interested. I started brewing kombucha at home almost five years ago and made little batches here and there. In 2016, I started brewing bigger batches and experimenting with different flavors. I noticed a lack in traditional, homey flavors and wanted to start making my own. I gave samples to a friend who said I should start selling because of how smooth they were. I made even bigger batches and gave them to friends and family. Not long after that, I bought bigger brew tanks and started selling out 34

of my home. I made it a goal to go commercial in 2017 and had my first two retailers in December of that year.” If you’re not familiar with kombucha, you can learn everything you need to know about the popular fizzy health drink from Bash. “Kombucha is a fermented drink made with a culture similar to kefir grains called a SCOBY, which stands for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Essentially, you make a strong tea and add some form of carbohydrate for the SCOBY to feed on. Most people use sugar cane or honey, but you can also use molasses or agave. The SCOBY starts breaking down the sugars, ferments and converts them into mostly probiotics, yeast and a few trace vitamins and minerals. You let it sit at room temperature for one-to-four weeks, and it's done and ready to drink. Sometimes it sounds harder to make than it really is, but it's actually pretty simple. The tricky part is getting down the flavor combinations.” Five flavors are offered year-round, with seasonal flavors offered in the spring and fall. Their most popular brews include strawberry ginger and blueberry ginger, with watermelon and pumpkin spice as top seasonal favorites. If you’re looking for a unique kombucha experience, try their cultured Koffee Kombucha featuring Cuento Coffee.

(CON TI N U ED)

“A coffee kombucha seems like it would have a weird taste, but it’s so smooth and creamy and gives you that caffeine kick when you need it! I'm probably proud of that one the most.” Artisan Kombucha believes it’s worth the extra time and effort put into making their brew. “The name isn't just a name—it’s just that: Artisan. Everything is handcrafted with real and whole fruits, herbs and veggies. There are more trace nutrients when using fresh ingredients. Everything is made with whole foods that are either soaked, squeezed or juiced. I'm a huge supporter of local businesses and buy local whenever I can and grow some of the ingredients myself. My bottles are conditioned, meaning they’re left out at room temp to carbonate naturally instead of using force carbonation from a keg. Even though it takes much longer, I'm confident that I'm making an excellent product that's consistent in taste.” Kombucha has countless health benefits if it’s properly brewed and kept raw, or non-pasteurized. “Kombucha contains probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that make their way down to the colon and compete with the harmful and pathogenic bacteria like salmonella and E. coli. Probiotics help the absorption of nutrients like the B vitamins and vitamin K and boost the immune system by increasing the production of the protective barrier that lines your stomach and intestines. This prevents pathogens and undigested food from making its way into your blood stream, causing autoimmune and allergic responses like seasonal allergies, eczema and general gut irritability. They also help increase the flow of bile, which is necessary for the digestion of fats and fat-soluble vitamins and elimination of toxins that the liver filters out. In addition, there’s phytonutrients in the herbs, fruits and veggies added for flavoring, and the tannins from the tea. Kombucha is also more acidic, so it can aid in the digestion of food by lowering the ph of the stomach. In the future, I’m planning on making special lines for gut health, detoxification and digestion grown from my community orchard.” The recent boom in kombucha isn’t just a coincidence. “Everyone wants to be healthier, and I think this is where it started. I think those drinking kombucha know it's healthy or at least much better than drinking sugary drinks. There’s also a huge push from the people demanding more healthy options at a reasonable price, and I think this is a direct result from that. Artisan Kombucha has given me a platform to express the importance of health through the food you eat and healthy digestion. I'm proud of what it’s become and am always so flattered when I get positive feedback. Artisan Kombucha has taken me from a place of dreaming to that of reality and has opened up so many doors of opportunity.” Find Artisan Kombucha all over Kansas City in local restaurants, food trucks, health food stores and farmers markets. EVERGREEN LEAWOOD FITNESS INSTRUCTOR SHARES THOUGHTS ON LIVING LIFE WITH PURPOSE

ARTICLE JOSCELYN GANN PHOTOGRAPHY ALLYSON CHENEY OF EPAGAFOTO

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY, I STARTED TO FORGET HER. I don’t know exactly how or why, but as I look back on it now, she began slipping away a long time ago. If I close my eyes tightly and really focus, I can see her on her childhood bed, books and papers strewn out around her, bent forward and filling her journal with the bubblegum pink flourishes of her dreams and plans. You see, she knows there will be a great love that will sweep her away, tall and handsome. She will write books and travel and leave an unmistakable mark on the world. She will live by her own rules and will create a life she adores. Flash forward to this morning as I put away toy cars and clean out the stale Cheez-its from my couch cushions. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror — I almost can see her. As I drop off my boys at school and daycare and head into work, I can feel her somewhere inside of me. I think a piece of her fell away the first time my heart got broken. The wrong boy with the wrong intentions (okay mom, you were right about that one) stole a little bit of that little girl full of hope. Another piece was chipped away when I got passed over for the job I really wanted as a young adult, and I started to question if I was even smart enough or good enough to have the life I’d planned for myself. Little by little, the black and whites of adult life started to replace the bubblegum pink dreams of my childhood. And now I find that though I’m still me, I’m also not. I know I’m not the only person who feels as if I’ve somehow lost myself along the way. Accepting the reality of who we are and reconciling that with what we dreamed our lives would be can leave us questioning and searching. I believe that there is a way to find our true selves again and realize all we dreamed of can still be -- we can leave that indelible print on the world yet. The way to do this is by identifying our PURPOSE. Purpose is the ardent glow that lights us from within, the actual calling on our lives. I believe each of us has a purpose — we are all created to do something beautiful with the breath and the heartbeats that we’ve been given. 42

If you’re exhausted or disillusioned, or just simply bored, here comes your revival (amens and praise hands included). You have one shot at your life, one time to do it right — that alone should ignite something within you. What is your purpose? I would say look at what at you love, and then think about helping others. Your purpose should intersect somewhere between those two. It is bigger than your mistakes, the five pounds you lose and gain over and over again (chips and queso are the devil), or your least shiny moments. Don’t let a little brokenness deter you from what you are meant to do in this life. Maybe it all hasn’t turned out exactly as you planned, but if you don’t pursue the central driving aim of your life, you rob yourself of joy and you rob others of your best. They deserve your best. For me, I believe that my purpose is to work with women and help them find confidence, forgiveness, and learn to
