Summer State of Mind

S

ummertime in and around Chicago is hands down our favorite season (although fall is up there too). We are soaking in every moment. With Lake Michigan right in our backyard and summer in full bloom, we all know these sunny days are numbered. Before we know it, the sun will start setting earlier, the kids will be back in school and we will all be back in the daily grind. F-U-N is the theme for the month of August. This is easy to do on the Northshore, with countless festivals, block parties and the beautiful beaches that span our shores. Tradition marches on with Lake Forest Day right around the corner on August 2; this year will mark its 109th year. New on the radar this summer is Ravinia Districts Food Truck Thursdays. It does not disappoint with tons of delicious food, refreshing beverages and live music. Lake Bluff continues to host a plethora of fun events. Be sure to look up their stacked summer lineup in our Lifestyle Calendar. In case we run into a rainy day, we have shared a fun DIY that is sure to keep your furry friend smelling their best during these dog days of summer. Last but not least, we would like to take a moment to thank all of our readers, friends and family for all the overwhelming support and positive feedback on our July launch issue. We hope to keep you inspired and involved in your community, just as the community inspires us.

HIGHLAND PARK POLICE CHIEF PAUL SHAFER TO RETIRE EFFECTIVE AUGUST 2 City of Highland Park Police Chief Paul Shafer announced his retirement effective August 2. He provided his resignation to City Manager Ghida Neukirch. Shafer has provided 38 years of law enforcement service in Illinois. “This was not an easy decision as I truly enjoy serving the city,” Shafer says. “I am grateful to staff, elected officials and the many individuals I have worked with over the years, especially the men and women of the police department, past and present. Their efforts are the foundation for our success in providing exemplary police services to our residents.” Chief Shafer began his career in law enforcement in 1979 with the Bellwood Illinois Police Department. In 1981, he took a position with the Naperville Illinois Police Department, where he served for 22 years and rose through the ranks to the position of captain deputy chief. While in that position, he was the commander of the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force from its inception in 1998 to his departure five years later. “Paul is an exceptional police chief. He has led our city’s police department for 14 years with distinct professionalism, integrity, compassion, and grace,” Neukirch says. The city is currently interviewing external candidates to serve as interim police chief while undertaking a national executive search for Chief Shafer’s replacement.

MARCHES ON FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, THE AMERICAN LEGION MCKINLOCK POST 264 HAS SPONSORED A LAKE FOREST COMMUNITY FAVORITE—LAKE FOREST DAY

N

o summer in Lake Forest is ever truly celebrated until the first Wednesday in August rolls around on the calendar. It’s on this day that the Lake Forest’s American Legion

McKinlock Post 264 oversees a community tradition that it has sponsored for more than a century—Lake Forest Day. “Until I was part of the American Legion, I had no idea that Lake Forest Day wasn’t a city-sponsored event,” says Vinnie Dolan, the 2017 Lake Forest Day Parade chairman, a role he has enjoyed for the last 25 years. “This is a major undertaking for our post, but it’s also a true labor of love that gives our members a real sense of pride.” The 2017 Lake Forest Day will take place on Wednesday, August 2, marking the 109th anniversary of the event, historically consisting of a parade and carnival. Only in times of war or the Depression have things altered from this plan. Lake Forest Day is the largest annual celebration in the city and is attended by thousands of residents and visitors from surrounding areas. At its 2017 parade that will make its way through downtown Lake Forest beginning at 10 a.m., Post 264 will salute Lake Forest Open Lands and Market Square’s recent renovations. The first Lake Forest Day took place in 1908 as an initiative by the Lake Forest Woman’s Club to raise money to build a contagious hospital for the community. The day drew in the crowds with a hot air balloon, a cute baby contest, a mind-reading dog and a vaudeville show. This event was strategically scheduled on the first Wednesday in August to ensure the greatest number of residents could attend, including many of the servants who worked in the mansions along Lake Road who had Wednesday as their day off.

The American Legion was founded in 1919 at the end of World War I. It wasn’t long before a group of Lake Forest veterans organized Post 264, the George Alexander McKinlock Jr. Post. McKinlock, who was with a machine gun group in France, was believed to be the first Lake Forester killed in action during World War I. Since its establishment, the mission of the Lake Forest McKinlock Post 264 has been to encourage loyalty to the United States and teach respect for the American flag—both in times of war and peace. Through fundraising, Post 264 assists veterans, supports youth through scholarships and promotes patriotism. “When your time in the military ends, your civic responsibility and your desire to give back to the community never goes away,” Vinnie adds. “The American Legion is a great outlet for dedicated community members to make something better.” Vinnie has belonged to Post 264 for 27 of the 31 years he has been a Lake Forester. In that time, he has watched Lake Forest Day evolve both in theme and in process. “To the person watching the parade on the street, they haven’t seen big changes in the event,” he says. “But behind the scenes, we’ve computerized the parade application process, and that has made the event so much more efficient.” Today, Lake Forest Day includes a family friendly carnival at West Park that begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, as well as a “Party in the Park” for adults until 11 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2. Additionally, Ed Geraghty, commander of Post 264 and Tom Glover, chairman of the 2017 Lake Forest Day, invite the community to participate in one of the two raffles where a lucky winner could take home up to $10,000. “Lake Forest Day is an annual event that truly sets our community apart,” Vinnie says.
