It’s a great time to find your favorite spa, yoga class, coffee spot or volunteer opportunity and make your days all your own.  I’ll be doing some traveling, heading out to Asheville, the north Georgia mountains (Jackson County has tons going on), Southeastern Tennessee and to Kansas City to visit my grandson (he’s four months old now!). I also have two kids in college and my back-to-school shopping now includes second-hand furniture for apartments, full length down coats (my daughter is in NYC) and laptops (ka-ching). Gone are the days of number two pencils and 3-ring notebooks.

LOCALLY OWNED

THE MONTESSORI DIFFERENCE JOHNS CREEK MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF GEORGIA: ORDERED AND BEAUTIFUL

MARIA MONTESSORI, ITALY’S FIRST WOMAN DOCTOR, INVENTED A SYSTEM OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION BASED ON HER SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATIONS OF HOW THE CHILD CONSTRUCTS HIMSELF THROUGH INTERACTION WITH HIS ENVIRONMENT. Her emphasis on the importance of the “prepared” environment created by the teacher offers the child the freedom to choose his work.  This freedom - which is given when the child demonstrates the responsibility to use it wisely -  allows him to remain with an activity until its purpose is accomplished.  Working without artificial timelines allows him to engage in the spontaneous repetition of a skill so that it is refined; this freedom also creates in him the ability to concentrate for long periods of time and to feel the satisfaction of mastery.  In a Montessori environment, the teacher serves as a guide rather than as a traditional instructor. She continually observes the child, using these observations to give the next lesson so that he steadily progresses.   The multi-aged classroom gives every child regular opportunities to be the learner as well as the leader in the security of a home-like environment which is cared for by everyone in it, teacher and student alike.  The Montessori classroom is ordered and beautiful, filled with materials that are aesthetically pleasing, materials which capture the imagination and assist in physical, academic and social development.  Montessori

What I didn’t see coming were the seemingly endless sleepless nights. the projectile vomiting infant, the toddler with chronic eczema, the elementary school and middle school age child with chronic stomach aches all the way through to the college student who lost 25lbs her freshman year. The culprit?  Food!  Both of my children have severe food sensitivities.   If you think  your child may have a food sensitivity or allergy, an elimination diet may help in determining what foods to steer clear from.  In an elimination diet, you exclude the common triggers for a short time, then reintroduce each food one at a time to determine which ones are or are not well-tolerated. Things to avoid include milk/dairy/eggs, wheat/gluten, corn, soy, citrus, peanuts, hydrogenated oils, caffeine, fish/shellfish, added/refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, packaged/processed/fast foods. 1. Maintain the elimination diet for 1 month.   2. After 1 month, reintroduce one food.   3. Watch for a reaction over the next 24-48 hours.   4. No reaction? Serve it a second time and wait again for 48 hours.  5. Continue this for 1 week. If there is still no reaction, feel free to reintroduce that to your child’s regular diet.   6. Reintroduce the next item and follow the same steps.   7. If the symptoms return, eliminate that food again.  If after eliminating the second time and the symptoms clear up once again, you should mark that food as a trigger.   This is a lesson in trial and error and most of all patience. In the end, however, you should have a clear picture of what foods you or your child should avoid.
