Trina Small, who you will recognize from our September cover, and me!

Happy November, friends. MY MOTHER TAUGHT AT A COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. She was gentle, cheerful and encouraging. Everything a preschooler (or daughter) needed. On Thanksgiving, we would unwrap the porcelain turkey-shaped salt and pepper shakers and she would task me and my sister with the job of making place cards. We would get out 3 x 5 inch index cards (which my mom used to hand write recipe cards to share), magic markers, glue and head out to the yard to look for

embellishments. Dried Queen Anne’s Lace, tiny pinecones from tall Michigan spruces, orange leaves still left un-raked were our favorites. Last summer my sweet sister-in-law Lynne retired from teaching music (30 years) and gifted my mom’s home made book (more index cards) entitled, “Finger Plays.” She had one for every season. Here are two she would sing with her students.   Sleep little seed so brown and small, Sleep little seed in the chilly fall, Sleep little seed in the cold, cold snow, Then in the spring you’ll start to grow.   and…   The turkey is a funny bird His head goes wobble, wobble. And all he says is just one word, Gobble, gobble, gobble.

After soaking in the hot springs at Dunton, take a roll in the snow to complete the experience. The bar at Dunton Hot Springs

HOW HARD COULD IT BE? I was joining Telluride Outside for a scenic snowmobile ride along groomed trails between the Wilson and Dolores mountain ranges to historic Dunton Hot Springs for a soak in ancient waters followed by a gourmet lunch. Well, two hours driving the snow machine, the roar of the engine masking my heavy breathing, left me exhilarated and exhausted. By the time we pulled into the remote Dunton Hot Springs property, an abandoned mining town turned Relais & Chateaux destination, my heart was pounding under the billowy snowsuit. EMPLOYEES OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL? Emory Johns Creek Hospital employees are dedicated to improving the health of residents in Johns Creek and surrounding communities. Many clinicians volunteer their time at events like the Johns Creek Chamber Expo, Forsyth Senior Expo, breast cancer awareness events and at our “Walk with a Doc” program. Our employees also educate community members about their current health status by offering free health screenings at our hospital’s annual 5K Scrub Run and Community Health Festival and women’s wellness event, Ladies’ Night Out. Many of our doctors, nurses and senior leaders visit assisted living facilities and local employers, to provide “Lunch and Learn” sessions. These informational events inform our community about stroke and heart attack signs, cancer care, orthopedics, surgical services and more.

We will be introducing new power drops from Oribe. You add these drops to any Oribe product to help conserve color or add more moisture! Come and see what all the fuss is about!

LETTUCE EAT HEALTHY HYDROPONICS BRINGS FRESH PRODUCE TO THE PORCHES OF NORTH FULTON RESIDENTS ARTICLE CARRIE WHITNEY PHOTOGRAPHY AUBRY CANALES

EVEN AS THE FARMERS MARKETS CLOSE FOR THE SEASON, NORTH FULTON RESIDENTS SEEKING HEALTHIER,

TASTIER,

LOCALLY-GROWN

PRODUCE CAN STILL GET LUCKY IN THE LETTUCE DEPARTMENT. Thanks to hydroponics and the dedication of two people who are passionate about sustainable growing, this vital ingredient for salads, sandwiches and more can be had all year and even delivered to your door, or actually your porch. Jeff Adams, founder and co-owner of Circle A Farms was a couple of months into his first harvest when he met Cheryl Howlin, who had a B.S. in dietetics and nutrition coupled with years of experience in sales. While Adams had grown up on a farm and achieved success in the construction industry, which allowed him to build and maintain the Circle A greenhouse, the complement of Howlin’s business development know-how helped transition the farm into a thriving local business. Lettuces from Circle A Farms can now be found at restaurants from Roswell to Alpharetta in addition to the farmers markets and a few small grocers. 26

Johns Creek Lifestyle | November 2018

More importantly for the fall and winter seasons, Circle A Farms offers the Farm-to-Porch program that delivers fresh lettuce to North Fulton residents. It’s simple. Customers order and pay online, and based on zip code, Circle A delivers to each customer’s personal porch cooler. There is no obligation to agree to an ongoing order, but Howlin has found that many customers do. “People love it,” she says. “Some people even do standing orders, which means they get the same delivery each week. Literally, your lettuce is at the most, 12 hours old.” What makes the Circle A Farms lettuce delicious enough to create such a dedicated client base is its growing process, which is hydroponic. Both a wave of the future and a system that has been popular on the West Coast since the 1970s, hydroponic agriculture, which refers to growing in water, offers significant benefits. This soilless method eliminates the need for herbicides and pesticides, so produce is clean. Even better, the water used by Circle A Farms contains just the right recipe of nutrients to grow great lettuce. “All of the nutrients that are in our water are derived from natural sources,” says Howlin. “It’s all a natural procedure.

Our lettuce not only tastes a whole lot better, it’s super, super healthy for you.” The nutrients in the water provide better flavor, and they help the lettuce stay fresh longer, too. Interestingly, despite its name, hydroponic agriculture uses a third of the amount of water traditional agriculture does, so it is also more sustainable. Circle A Farms has kept the focus on lettuce because it’s a type of produce that most people eat, however, there is plenty of variety. Offerings include spring mix, which is the most popular, as well as baby kale, Bibb, romaine, arugula and Tropicana. Additionally, basil and microgreens are available. Hosting a Salad Bar Party is a fun way to sample Circle A Farms lettuce with family, friends or coworkers. Circle A delivers Kale & Quinoa and Romain BLT salads to a small

It’s delicious and hard to resist. “Kids absolutely love our lettuce,” says Howlin. “Kids are some of our best customers.” That could be the best selling point of all. Happy Holidays Stags Leap Bottle Drawing! Start your season off right, with two of our favorite fall wine choices.

1 2

Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2016

The Sonoma Coast is as much about lifestyle as it is about the celebration this wonder ful grape deserves. The wine makers are selective about the fruit that goes into this wine to ensure that vintage after vintage, they are producing an exceptional Chardonnay. This one has all of the elements of a classic Chardonnay. It is a wine you serve when you want to show people you care about them. Or, sometimes it ’s just for you - because you deserve it!

La Crema Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2015

Our cool climate means grapes spend more time on the vine. That allows a deeper, more dramatic spectrum of flavors and aromas to develop. And that creates decidedly rich and layered wines. In many ways the 2015 growing season in the Williamette Valley mirrored 2014 and is thought of as near per fect. A truly elegant finish with supple tannins and a touch of of cedar that adds complexity and length.

Enter To Win! Purchase any one of the wines in this AD, along with a copy of your AD with your information filled out. Valid for an entry into our live drawing on November 30th for a bottle of Stags Leap Artemis.
