I'm thankful for The Bahamas LAST YEAR, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF STAYING AT THE ABACO CLUB. THE HOSPITALITY WAS UNENDING AND THE CLEAR WARM WATER AND BLUE SKY EMBRACED ME. I WROTE TO MY FRIENDS THERE TO ASK HOW THEY ARE COPING AFTER HURRICANE DORIAN AND HOW WE CAN HELP AND THEY SENT THIS REPORT.

upwards of 180 mph and gusts up to 200 mph ravaged the islands. Our property, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, weathered the storm relatively well with damage that is to be expected from torrential rains and high wind, including downed trees, flooding in low-lying areas, and missing roof shingles, siding, railings, etc. Our new Yacht Club and Marina slips also made it through without incident aside from minor damage. the same cannot be said for other parts of the Abacos which experienced widespread and catastrophic destruction, and most sadly, loss of life. We’ve taken critical action to provide immediate and ongoing assistance to the people of Great Abaco Island through the Abaco-Winding Bay Relief Fund, (501(c)3 status pending). All funds are being used to provide assistance specifically to the people of Abaco in the form of food, shelter, medical aid and supplies, and assistance in the island’s clean-up and rebuilding efforts. (GoFundMe.com/f/AbacoDorianRelief) Miraculously, all 178 of our staff members made it through this horrific storm and we have accounted for everyone. All have suffered, and most are traumatized in some form or another.

We are also in the process of acquiring a mobile medical unit to bring to the island since the clinic of the island doctor, Dr. Jim Hull, was destroyed in the storm. It will be a long time before Abaco is once again the tidy island paradise it was before Dorian, but there is a strong and shared desire on everyone’s part to bring a semblance of normalcy back to life on the island, and we’re making good progress to that end.

RE-ENGINEERING THANKSGIVING

THE JOY OF THANKSGIVING ISN’T FOUND IN THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION. The holiday becomes rewarding when we can find a path of renewed appreciation for this time-honored celebration that glorifies gratitude, as much as it does our collective history. Experiencing the best result comes from a gentle dance between safeguarding tradition and knowing how to SHAKE IT UP! Most important of all, the pleasure of your company means SO much more when you are cool, calm - and emotionally available.  The first-ever “Feast of Thanks” was shared by the original pilgrims in 1621 following their successful harvest. In that perilous New World meeting, the conditions to support life was clearly uncertain. In honoring Thanksgiving today, customary observation typically skips acorns or squirrel, but what about your mom’s 23-ingredient sweet potato casserole recipe?  Is that a delete that could cause a rebellion?  It seems we are experiencing an interesting change in the way Americans interpret gracious living. Not a revision or a correction, but a movement, a resurrection of civility. This is not surprising - Isn’t it clear we need an antidote to the rabid intensity of modern life?  16

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

There is an art to living the good life, but in 2019 we are all overcommitted. On the flip side, the unmitigated pressure most of us face to get it all done gives far more power to the sweet, simple experiences we share over a good  cup of coffee or a great glass of wine. Loving something delicious that someone else took the time to create for us is connecting. And taking the time to savor it, is enriching.  Maybe creating a slightly less challenging menu could yield a more vibrant, happy holiday in your house. So, what to cook?  How

do

while remaining comfortably in control?  Start off by skipping the brine in favor of a quick flavorful turkey rub.  No basting, no constant vigilance, just leave the oven closed!

Turkey Rub Combine the following in a bowl:

ingredients + 1/2 cup olive oil + one stick fully softened salted butter at room temp  + 1/4 cup brown sugar  + 1 tablespoon paprika  + 1 tablespoon onion powder  + 1 tablespoon garlic powder + 1/4 teaspoon black pepper  directions Blend into a loose paste and rub all over the bird inside and out prior to placing it in a preheated oven. Double the recipe for a bigger bird.

The Beach Walk Cafe is Destin’s only fine dining located directly on the emerald waters of the Gulf Coast and for special occasions, guests can arrange to dine privately ON the beach with a “Toes in the Sand” experience.   With just 37 luxury rooms and suites, the boutique property is quiet and attracts newlyweds, couples and friends looking for an all-inclusive (except dinner) experience at the beach.  “The rooms were more traditional in decor and the restaurant was incredible - very intimate yet charming,” said Nancy. “A complete breakfast buffet was served every morning with a chef to prepare fresh eggs cooked any style.” Boxed lunches to take on a hike through Henderson Beach State Park that directly neighbors the Inn or to the beach are prepared daily for guests and happy hour and snacks are at the ready after a day out and about.  “The entire staff was extremely professional and informative,” says Nancy. “If you are looking for a place to relax and be away from the crowds, unwind...this place is for you!” It was our pleasure, Nancy! SGC: HIPnation believes that insurance should be used only for the high-cost health events—not things like physicals, the management of ongoing medical conditions, or the common cold. How can we switch gears out of the medial insurance mentality? BH: By simply looking at the auto insurance industry. You use your auto insurance when you have an accident—not when you put gas in your car, replace your windshield wipers, or change your oil. If those items were purchased through insurance, they
