Happy Holidays! AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Chandler Lifestyle in 2019!

It seems like just yesterday I was sitting down to write my January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast-forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. In fact, we’re already working on our February issue! The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really

ELIE WIESEL AND PRIMO LEVI: THE GRAY ZONE OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVAL The impact of the Holocaust, its lessons on social justice and civil dialogue are still relevant today, nearly 75 years later. Prof. Nancy Harrowitz, professor of Italian and Jewish studies at Boston University, is an  authority on the subject. During a lecture in November for the East Valley Jewish Community Center, she touched upon the crucial nature of the legacies that two prolific writers and survivors left us and how their work relates to our contemporary world.    The lecture, Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi: The Gray Zone of Holocaust Survival, shared how these writers focused on the importance of social justice as they discussed how as a society we can reduce the risk of genocide after the Holocaust through an understanding of how dehumanization and prejudice works and the damage that it does to all of us. “It is important to continue to discuss the Holocaust and what it can teach us,” she says. The East Valley JCC’s Center for Holocaust Education and Human Dignity and Boston University’s Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies launched a new partnership In November. For this tablescape, we incorporated, various sizes and colors of beautiful Christmas trees with our blush floral centerpiece in a mercury glass vase for that extra bling. We kept the glassware simple and clear. Consider adding an inviting element to every person’s seat. Not only will this tie the entire tablescape together, but it will let your guest know that you went the extra mile to show that you’re excited for them to be there. In this seating, we added a special treat of these mini macarons. Instead of the traditional linen placements, set chargers under the plates. This creates an additional layer of depth and interest on your tablescape. Chargers also help round the table, creating a more intimate dining experience.  To reach Dena, visit DenaThomasDesigns.com.

CRUISE THE WORLD IN ULTIMATE COMFORT AND LUXURY THOSE LOOKING FOR A LUXURIOUS, DON’T-HAVETO-THINK-ABOUT-A-THING,

TRAVEL-THE-WORLD

VACATION FIND IT ALL WITH REGENT SEVEN SEAS, AN ALL-INCLUSIVE CRUISE LINE THAT OFFERS AN UNRIVALED EXPERIENCE TO LUXURY CRUISERS. Here, pampering and relaxation meld with the opportunity to see some of the world’s most popular destinations. With Regent, you’re taken care of from the moment your trip begins—round-trip, business-class air on intercontinental flights from the U.S. and Canada is included, and the comforts only continue from there. Think floating five-star hotel complete with marble bathrooms, exquisitely prepared food, unlimited wine and spirits, and beds so comfortable you may never want to get up. Oh, and Regent’s fleet includes only all-suite ships with balconies, and every trip includes unlimited shore excursions, unlimited WiFi and gratuities included. THE SHIP As I stepped aboard the Regent Seven Seas Voyager in Barcelona, Spain for a 10-day Aegean Adventures cruise (this itinerary included stops in Marseille, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Florence, Italy; Rome, Italy; Valetta, Malta; Santorini, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Athens, Greece), I was greeted with a glass of champagne and directed to my room, which included a vase of fresh orchids and a stocked mini-bar (let your cruise concierge know your beverage preferences ahead of time, and you’ll arrive to see it stocked with your favorites). The room itself included a walk-in closet, sitting

Regent also presents guests lecturers on the cruise that tie into the ship’s itinerary. On my trip, Dr. Bruce Chadwick, who is known as “the world’s greatest professor,” gave history presentations. With just 700 guests and 447 crew members, there was an intimate feel, and the crew quickly learned my preferences, from knowing my preferred drink order when I lounged by the pool to greeting me by name around the ship. TRAVEL DESTINATION

(CON TI N U ED)

There is an attention to detail and quality to the food that is unrivaled by other lines. There are plenty of options for food, from breakfast in bed to a breakfast buffet or coffee and food at the Coffee Connection, lunch at the pool deck restaurant or in a dining room, afternoon tea and snacks,  and dinner at either the dining room or the specialty restaurants—Prime 7 (a steakhouse), Sette Mari at La Veranda (Italian fare) or Chartreuse (a French restaurant). The dining room menu changes nightly, though it includes several options that are always on the menu  including scallops, lobster, shrimp and various cuts of meat, including filet mignon. “Regent is famous not only for its food but the high quality of ingredients that are used,” Anatoli says. It’s easy to want to never leave. THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES Regent goes out of its way to celebrate its guests and to make sure they are comfortable. Forgot your reading glasses and can’t see the dining menu? A crew member Scallops in the Compass Rose dining room

will arrive with selection of glasses for you to choose from. Relaxing by the pool? Crew members will pass by to clean your sunglasses or reading glasses—as well as to bring by cold towels or snacks such as fruit skewers or smoothies. When there are long days away from the ship—such as the day we spent 10 hours in Rome—we arrived back to musicians on the pier welcoming us with music, the crew lined up on a red carpet to welcome us back, and cold towels and champagne.

Amazing artwork in Vatican City

THE ITINERARY Of course, many choose a cruise as a way to see many ports in one trip. I spent most of my days on land exploring different ports, and with Regent, all except the voluntary VIP tours are included. You can choose from the selection of offered tours or choose to explore a destination on your own. I chose Regent’s tours, which included taking an express train from the port of Civitavecchia into Rome, Italy, and a tour of Ephasus, Turkey that included luxury coach transportation and guided tours through various ruins and historic sites—as well as a buffet lunch at a hotel. There were tours available for all interests, from a bike tour in Lucca, Italy, to cheese and wine tastings in Aix-en-Provence in France, and a cruise of the Valetta Harbor in Malta. It was wonderful to be able to see so many destinations during one trip and to relax when back on board. With the gentle breezes, the blue sea and the luxury of everything at my fingertips, Regent Seven Seas made it a perfect vacation. For more about Regent Seven Seas, visit RSSC.com. 28

Founded by the legendary football coach of the Miami Dolphins, Don Shula, Shula’s has a polished history of delivering consistently high quality, chef-driven cuisine paired with award-winning wine lists and craft cocktails. Since opening at Wild Horse Pass in 2009, Shula’s Steak House has delighted guests with its menu of premium cuts of steak made from Black Angus beef, hand-selected and aged to perfection. The restaurant’s most popular featured entrée, which is sure to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites, is its 22-ounce, dry-aged Cowboy Ribeye. Toy Barn THE PLACE WHERE GROWN-UPS STASH THEIR TOYS

AGE CONTAINERS. They’re childhood dream-keepers, brimming with wonderous things. They keep treasures safe. But as kids grow, so do their toys. Grown-ups need a place for their wonders too, and when a box won’t do, there’s always Toy Barn. Toy Barn offers high-end, luxury garage ownership to store goodies like hot rods, classic cars, boats and recreational vehicles. Some people call them a garage condo, others prefer man cave or she shed. “People have individual ownership, just like a condominium. They can fix them up, store stuff, or just hang out. We see a lot of hobbyist and enthusiasts,” says Jason Phillips, the owner and developer of Toy Barn. Chandler will be home to the fifth Toy Barn in the Valley. They’ll be breaking ground in December at a site near the airport. The 66 units are scheduled for completion next fall. “We are pushing a country club atmosphere for car enthusiasts in the community. It’s not just some garage where people can park their cars and collectibles. We’re lifestyle-focused and trying to create a community within each of our facilities for like-minded individuals,” says Jason. “That concept is really working. Not everyone wants to play golf.”

Like the other Toy Barns, Chandler’s will be fully fenced with 24-hour access, security, an owner’s lounge and a long list of customizable features. Units range from 1,0003,000 square feet, and all have high speed internet, cable, plumbing and options for climate control. The owner’s lounge is a 2,000-square-foot, fully furnished club house. A roll-up glass garage door leads to a well-appointed lounge with a kitchen, restrooms and wet bar. “We hosted a party at the Lone Mountain location and had close to 300 people. There’s a huge patio area with seating and it’s designed to display cars,” he says. Toy Barn uses the space for member activities like its monthly Cars and Coffee event, and owners can utilize the lounge for parties and special events. “A lot of our buyers are relocating to Arizona from other parts of the country. Our clients are a more sophisticated age demographic,” explains Jason. “We’re a good option for people looking to downsize but who don’t want to get rid of all their belongings.” Some owners, who still like to play, have turned their garages into dream forts. Jason said one of the most extravagant units at one of the other locations is decked out with barnwood walls. The owner uses it as an entertainment space. The full bathroom is laid with subway tile, there’s a wet bar, and an island with granite countertops. He has multiple televisions, custom flooring and lighting, and a mezzanine. “He could live in it for sure,” says Jason. “Some of these guys in Scottsdale, they go all out.” Toy Barn is a family business that was first developed in 2010 by Jason and his father, Paul Phillips. “We were just real estate developers from Ohio looking for an opportunity in Arizona, and the opportunity stumbled into our lap,” he says. Paul has a garage condo for his toys, too. He stores his vintage Indian motorcycles. Paul opted for a mezzanine and has finished his unit with flooring, paint and cabinetry. “We have a list of preferred vendors we’ve been using for 10 years [to customize the garages]. But owners can always bring in their own people,” explains Jason. People can tour a garage model at the Scottsdale location or check out a virtual reality presentation of the Chandler Toy Barn at ToyBarnStorage.com. “It’s going to be a first-of-its-kind in Chandler for sure,” says Jason. 34
