In the spirit of love for my fellow man and woman, the response once again of our community during a crisis keeps restoring my faith. As I write this, one day removed from the insanity of another fire (the not so easy “Easy Fire”), with many more likely to come before we get a grip on what it takes to mitigate this ever-increasing threat, I cannot help but marvel at the brave and unrelenting response and support we receive from first responders and others in our community. Our November issue was dedicated to thanking everyone for their efforts and, sad to say, here we go again. The holiday season is very much a family affair. Celebrating our love and showing it in small ways is often more important than a big celebration or gift. But before I cele-

Will Building Executive Function or Auditory Processing Skills Give Your Child the Competitive Edge You’re Hoping for in 2020? When you think about your school age child, you want them to be at the top of their class. What more can a parent do? There’s an “invisible” set of skills that the very best learners have honed to perfection. These skills give them a very real and defined competitive advantage over their peers.

The Tragedy Is, Almost No One Talks About These Skills.

Schools and tutors don’t work on these skills. For over 35 years, Stowell Learning Center has helped students be their very best. How? Through a proprietary, well researched system, we zero in to the exact skills that need work, and then transform them…permanently.

Who Is This a Match For? •

Bright students who want to make sure they are optimally prepared for the future

Bright students who are doing well in school, but are working way too hard for the grades they get

Students who are in tutoring, but find tutoring isn’t changing their abilities…it’s just a permanent crutch

Bright under-achieving students who should be doing better but somehow aren’t

Bright students that appear to be lazy or unmotivated

Bright students who have always struggled in school

Students with diagnostic labels such as Learning Disabled, Dyslexic, or ADHD

PADRES JUNTOS Part of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest and largest national Hispanic civil rights organization in the U.S., Padres Juntos aims to educate Englishlanguage learning families through trainings in an effort to become an advocate in their disadvantaged community and for systemic changes in the Oxnard School District. In Oxnard, 93% of students in Grades K-8 are Latino. “(Padres Juntos) educates the parents who are non-English speaking to help their children navigate into a school system,” says Teasdale. “They make sure if their kids want to go through college that they become effective advocates for their children’s education.” The organizations were awarded their grants at SJFVC’s annual “Celebration of Social Activism” event in October at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo. Studio artists also donated their art along with silent and live auctions. “That event was a celebration of social activism, to celebrate the grantees and acknowledge them and create a celebration for the community,” says Martinez-Bravo. Teasdale says the board will soon start researching a new social justice theme for 2020.

A sofa is the heart of a room, so we put our heart into everything we do. We bridge the gap between a design firm and a furniture store. Like a design firm, we value the creative process. We make house calls, collaborate with clients and coordinate many of the little details you never thought existed. OAK PARK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Oak Park schools provide inclusive learning environments where children are loved and honored for who they are. Staff members are well-trained in the most effective teaching techniques through partnerships with researchers at top universities, such as Teachers College at Columbia University and Stanford University’s Challenge Success. “We place a priority on ensuring that our schools foster creativity, play and inquiry-based learning—and students become environmental stewards through action-oriented projects at our National Green Ribbon campuses,” says Dr. Tony Knight, Superintendent. For instance, Oak Park schools are free from chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides, “and the food we serve is cooked from scratch on site each day,” Knight says. “All of these practices allow our staff to provide a Climate of Care that meets the educational, social, emotional and physical needs of all students,” Knight adds. “We believe that the care we take for each student allows our schools to be among the highest achieving in California.” For more information, visit OakParkUSD.org or call 818.735-3200.

STOWELL LEARNING CENTER No matter which school parents choose for their children, bright students who underachieve are the most ignored pupils in schools today. Often, these students appear to be just lazy. Others are doing “well,” but are working far too hard for the grades they’re getting. Some children may struggle with learning disabilities, Dyslexia and attention challenges. These conditions affect 30% of the population and are caused by missing or inefficient learning skills. These skills include auditory processing, visual processing, memory, attention and executive function.  Once these skills are in place, learning becomes much easier.

LOCALLY OWNED CREATE YOUR BEST LOOK AT SALON WESTLAKE & WESTLAKE BARBERS

“Be You at the W!” ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN

WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS OF SALON WESTLAKE, GUESTS FEEL INSTANTLY AT EASE, WELCOMED BY A FRIENDLY STAFF OF PROFESSIONALS WHO SPECIALIZE IN ENHANCING EACH CLIENT’S UNIQUE BEAUTY AND STYLE. Salon Westlake’s motto, “Be You at the W!” exemplifies their guest-focused philosophy. “Like a warm blanket, we want all people of every background to feel comfortable walking through our doors, asking for the look that makes them feel heard, understood and fabulous without judgment,” says Lisa Coffman-Diegel, owner of Salon Westlake and Westlake Barbers. A full-service salon for the whole family housed in a beautiful and comfortable modern industrial space filled with natural light and equipped with an exceptional ventilation system for a pleasant odorfree environment, Salon Westlake is home to highly trained, talented stylists, barbers, estheticians and manicurists who take pride in helping clients look their best. “We are a diverse group of talented humans ranging in age and ethnicity who function as a family in a welcoming, safe zone for all who enter,” says Lisa, a stylist for 20 years in the Conejo Valley. “We come from all walks of life and we come together as a community of helping people achieve confidence through styles and color suited for their needs.” Salon Westlake’s stylists specialize in a variety of services, including modern cuts and advanced custom color techniques and applications, such as Balayage, Babylights, Vivids, Global Blonding, highlighting, base-breaking and traditional color touch ups. They also offer styling services for formal occasions, such as weddings and proms, as well as an in-house brow and makeup specialist, organic and anti-aging facials, organic skin care products for purchase, microdermabrasion, manicures and pedicures. At their executive barbershop, Westlake Barbers, master barbers offer straight razor shaves, steamed hot towel facials, fades and classic gentlemen’s cuts. “Our typical customer is the person who sees the benefit of spending their time and money with others of integrity who truly 48

care about the needs of their guest,” says Lisa, who knew from a young age that she wanted to be a stylist, “cutting my dolls’ hair and the neighborhood kids’ [hair] by age 12.” “At 17, I enrolled in Cosmetology school. I knew early on that making people feel at the top of their game when they step out into this crazy beautiful world in which we live was my calling. Owning the business and working with like-minded individuals was a natural progression,” says Lisa, noting that it’s the people she loves the most about her industry. “I love the guests and I love the type of humans that are attracted to working in this field—the craziest, most loyal best bunch you’ll ever meet!” she adds. Salon Westlake’s guest-focused approach reflects Lisa’s commitment to ensuring clients receive personalized services tailored just for them. “Pairing the guests with the proper artist is our mission,” says Lisa. “Most salons work on a rotation basis, giving new guests to the newest stylist just to put someone in their chair, whereas we go out of our way to match the client’s needs and time constraints with the right person for the job!” By intermixing stylists and barbers, as well as skin and nail care professionals, clients have the advantage of finding the perfect fit for their needs. “Our noncompetitive environment allows for the guest to choose multiple artists for their personal time constraints without feeling like they’re ‘cheating’ on their stylist for trying someone different,” Lisa says. “We know that people are busy and understand that sometimes things arise and your usual artist may not be available—feel free to see someone else and return to your artist without worry.” Salon Westlake’s educated staff includes those trained by Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell, Wella, Redken, Burke Williams, Dermalogica and more. They also take continuing education courses throughout the year to ensure they are skilled in the latest techniques. “At Salon Westlake & Westlake Barbers, we strive to continually educate ourselves in our best efforts to serve our clients and keep them satisfied, not only with their hair but their overall experience.” To make an appointment, call 818.889.0262 or visit SalonWestlake.com and click “Book Now.” Salon Westlake is located at 4673 Lakeview Canyon Road in Westlake Village, across from Stone Haus in the newly updated County Line Shopping Center. Francisco. These stars light up the Kavli Theatre stage year after year, exciting audiences and cast members alike. “As a director, it is important for me to bring world-class talent to the Conejo Valley,” says Kim Maselli. “Bringing these celebrity dancers to our stage educates and inspires our patrons. It can also spark the dream for our community dancers to pursue careers of their own. Seeing these accomplished professionals up close encourages our dancers to realize their own dreams are attainable.” These dreams come with a lot of hard work, talent and dedication. Pacific Festival Ballet’s training school, California Dance Theatre, has been a thriving arts organization in the community since 1985. The CDT curriculum offers classes in all dance forms for preschool children through adults. It also offers a Pre-professional Training Program for the serious-minded student wishing to pursue ballet as a career. “As in most art forms,” says Patrick Frantz, ballet master and former dancer with Paris Opera Ballet, “it takes about 10 years of training to refine your skills and artistry. You need to have talent and a deep passion from within to keep driving you forward.” Talent and passion abound at Pacific Festival Ballet. Over the past 25 years a multitude of dancers have gone on to professional careers and attribute their success to training, performing opportunities and mentoring from their instructors. Alumni Leili Rackow, now a member of San Francisco Ballet, reflects on her PFB journey.

PARTING THOUGHTS

What is Happy?

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

WE HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT BEING HAPPY. “Happy” is one of the favorite songs of many, myself included. It truly makes me feel happy when I hear it, but is that actual happiness? I ask you, are you happy? We all sometimes reflect on our life at different stages, asking ourselves if we are happy. Sometimes it depends on the day or situation. Is happy a day by day situation? It’s definitely a feeling. Is it situational or controlled by the weather? Can you start off happy and then have your day hijacked? Maybe it's about how much you accomplished that day, or that week, or in your life so far.
