TREND SETTER

TAKE A FASHION TRIP TO ATLANTA

AWAITING GUESTS AT THE SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN  FASH MUSEUM OF FASHION + FILM ON THE UNIVERSITY’S ATLANTA CAMPUS IS A STUNNING SOLO EXHIBITION THAT CELEBRATES A DECADE OF ICONIC LOOKS FROM A NOTABLE DESIGNER WHO HAILS FROM GREECE. But hurry—this exhibit only runs through Sept. 22. The KALEIDOSCOPE KATRANTZOU: Mary Katrantzou, 10 Years in Fashion exhibition pays homage to this coveted designer’s namesake label. The presentation spotlights her iconic and  innovative approach to  combining fashion, art and technology. Known for her limitless imagination, Mary draws from enchanting, unexpected sources. For example, Fabergé eggs, Bauhaus posters, postage  stamps, perfume bottles and typewriters were all worked into her collections. “Print can be as definitive as a cut or a drape and allows a woman to filter beauty found in design, in a subversive way. Her garments are highly sought-after by  fashionistas, collectors and celebrities alike and have been worn by Michelle Obama, Cate  Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o and Naomi Campbell. In December 2018, Mary was invited to design Beyoncé’s  look for the Global Citizen Festival. The majestic ensemble consisted of floral patchwork based

on the contours of the African continent printed on a sequin base and hand-embroidered with  Swarovski crystals. Tapped for prestigious  partnerships with brands such as Atelier  Swarovski, Victoria’s Secret, Longchamp,  Moncler and Adidas Originals, she also has collaborated with artist-provocateur Pablo  Bronstein, designed costumes for the New York  City Ballet and Paris Opera, and exhibited her work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. More than 80 of Mary’s cutting-edge creations from the past 10 years of her career can be explored in this new exhibition, including fashion, fibers, illustrations and a selection of looks from each of her runway collections. Mary was born to a mother who is an interior designer and to a father who is a trained textile engineer. She moved to the United States in 2003 to study architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design but later transferred to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design  where she completed her bache-

lor’s degree in 2005 and her master’s degree in 2008. Her graduation show in 2008, which featured trompe l’oeil prints of oversized jewelry on jersey-bonded dresses, took the fashion industry by storm. She then remained living in London.  Her first ready-to-wear collection debuted at London Fashion Week in February 2009. Despite a small collection of nine dresses, she reportedly picked up 15 stockists, including Browns, Joyce and Colette.  Her collections are now sold in 200-plus fashion shops in at least 47 countries. She even works with Adidas for both clothing and footwear. SCAD faculty from the university’s top-ranked school of fashion indicate Mary’s  innovative design philosophy mirrors SCAD’s signature approach to cross-disciplinary education at all of their global locations.  “By experiencing extraordinary, world-class  exhibitions at SCAD FASH, students and guests observe the  work of global fashion superstars,” says Paula Wallace, SCAD’s president and founder. “They also meet and exchange ideas directly with creators of the work. Only at SCAD!” KALEIDOSCOPE KATRANTZOU was curated by Alexandra Sachs, SCAD FASH executive director; and Rafael Gomes, director of fashion exhibitions.  SCAD FASH is open to the public with the cost  of museum admission.  SCAD.edu September 2019 | Brentwood Lifestyle

KATE TEXADA KIRVEN, THE LOCAL MASTERMIND BEHIND THE WILLA JEAN VINTAGE JEWELRY & DESIGN LINE, BELIEVES JEWELRY SHOULD BE AS INTERESTING AND UNIQUE AS THE INDIVIDUALS WEARING IT.

WILLA JEAN LINE CREATOR PROVIDES BOLD, VINTAGE PIECES

"I strive to create meaningful pieces that stand out, spark interesting conversations, and continue on to become a part of new and celebrated traditions," she says. Each Willa Jean piece is original, designed and handcrafted by Kate in her Nashville home studio. This bold, distinctive jewelry features antique and vintage heirlooms and treasures. Her collections incorporate nat-

ural, high-quality elements that include 14-karat gold, semi-precious stones and cowhide leather, ethically sourced in the United States.  She says the names of her jewelry are inspired by all things Nashville. "We particularly like to pay homage to country and local indie musicians, as well as historical and significant places around town," she adds. Being raised in the South, Kate grew up on stories of those who came before her. She has  many fond memories of long summer days spent sitting outside under the shade of live oaks, laughing with her family as they shared stories of their childhood and old family traditions. She became fascinated with the idea that people's belongings can become caretakers for these stories, as well as stewards of history and heritage for future generations. "There's  something magical in realizing the experiences and memories these pieces carry with them, and how they only get better and more special with time," she says.  Kate has been collecting jewelry all of her life. As a child she developed a knack for collecting pieces from antique shows, and boutique and vintage stores. Kate created Willa Jean to celebrate her passion for family history and her love of meaningful heirlooms. Inheriting her grandmother’s antique jewelry collection inspired her to create beautiful new jewelry out of old but meaningful treasures. Kate has since spent many years curating her own collection of vintage and antique pieces.   "I love that Willa Jean allows me to continue on their stories in a way that helps others feel beautiful and celebrated," she says. Willa Jean jewelry can be purchased from Nashville boutiques  such as Aly & Sy,  directly on Instagram @willajeanjewelry, regular trunk shows and pop-up shops, custom requests from direct messages and online at WillaJeanJewelry.com. Additionally, Willa Jean purchases provide support for Book ‘em, a local charitable organization that works toward a more literate Nashville, because Kate partners with the group to provide a book for each piece of her sold jewelry. Book 'em helps economically disadvantaged children, from birth through high school, discover the joy and value of reading through book ownership and enthusiastic volunteers. Kate Texada Kirven’s signature jewelry are one-of-a-kind pieces that she personally  sources and curates.  Each piece  is made to capture the soul and essence of an antique piece. It’s not unusual for Kate to sell pieces of jewelry that she’s actually wearing while out and about. 2. THE DATE NIGHT JACKET

ALYSSA “ALY” COFFMAN WANTED TO OPEN A NEW BOUTIQUE WITH A TRENDY ATMOSPHERE, ONE THAT HAD A MORE “BRENTWOOD FEEL.” So she did in April.  Called Aly & Sy, the new boutique was named after her 12-yearold daughter, Sy. In addition to  clothing, Aly offers gifts, jewelry, shoes and accessories. Gifts include NASH hats, BFF tokens, journals, hostess items, funky framed readers, baby and kids onesies, tees, bibs and custom denim jackets, complete with monogramming. They also carry men’s apparel and accessories. “I’m all about fabulous accessories,” Aly says. “Spice up the most bland outfit with unique earrings, lots of bangles or a cool cuff. And an amazing necklace always does wonders. Shoes and bags do it, too. A good leather riding boot goes with just about everything!” But if Aly had to put her money into one item, she says it would be outerwear. “A big fuzzy sweater with bell sleeves, well-cut vest or an amazing leather jacket—I also don’t know anybody that can’t wear a scarf. Bright flowers, stripes, chevron ... in a cotton or linen blend—light enough for a basic T-shirt in the summer and adds a  pop of color to any jacket in fall or winter. It also frames the face—instant color pop! I have tons of them. They never go out of style,” she assures. Aly has firsthand knowledge about what works in attire. She was born and raised in San Francisco. Her family immigrated from Malta, a little island in the Mediterranean. Her grandmother was a seamstress for Nordstrom’s bridal department, and her grandfather was a San Franciscan upholsterer well known for making sails for the boats in the Bay area. He later made custom drapery for the fabulous Victorian homes throughout the city. “So being around those fabulous dresses and thousands of upholstery samples, as well as spending countless hours watching them work, has really instilled a love for fabrics and quality workmanship in me,” Aly says.  “Of course, that upbringing bred a strong work ethic and the mindset that anything is possible if it’s done well and with passion.” Aly shops for the store at markets in Los Angeles and New York City. She also offers truck shows, which provide opportunities to meet the brains and beauty behind one-of-a-kind, handmade vintage masterpieces.  615.922.4165

24 Hours with... MISS TENNESSEE TEEN TURNED VICTORIA'S SECRET MODEL

ALTHOUGH USED TO VISUAL SPOTLIGHTS HERSELF, LOCAL GO-GETTER SOFIE GRACE ROVENSTINE USED HER MISS TENNESSEE TEEN USA 2018 PLATFORM TO PROMOTE MESSAGES OF SELF-ACCEPTANCE TO YOUNG GIRLS, BECAUSE SHE RECALLED A TIME WHEN SHE FELT BURDENED BY THE INSECURITIES THE MODELING INDUSTRY HAD PLACED ON HER. But she didn’t let that stop her from becoming a Victoria’s Secret model.  Sofie remembers when her smile wasn’t perfect and how just that one aspect affected her self-image. She turned to the local offices of Dr. David Kemp at Kemp & Rice Orthodontics. Dr. Kemp and Sofie formed a trusting partnership, through which they perfected her signature smile.  She entered modeling when she was just 14. At that time, she signed with AMAX, a leading local agency in Nashville. “I was able to work on the weekends and absolutely fell in love with modeling, both on camera and on the runway. I began to plan for an early graduation so I could invest in my career full-time,” Sofie says. By age 15, she was signed with IMG Worldwide, which afforded her opportunities to travel to London, Paris, New York City and Milan to work with top clothing designers. However, this notoriety was balanced by other life activities, such as living in the mountains of Mexico to perform mission work with her family in her youth. Aside from her summer international travels for modeling, she says she maintained a normal high school life, even joining the track team where she won a state title.  “The first insight I had into the pressures and standards of the industry was when my NYC agent told me I needed to choose track or modeling. Because I was training up to four hours a day, I had developed quite a bit of muscle. He said that my body no longer fit the expected standard in the industry and that if I wanted a future in modeling, I couldn’t do track. And despite my just becoming a state champion in the long jump and knowing that scholarships were on the horizon, I quit track,” she says. “I was told I needed to change, but really it is the modeling industry that needed to change.” So she went about carving out her own path for modeling, by working with her body in its natural, healthy state.

Sofie obtained her associate’s degree in international affairs. Her philanthropic efforts still focus on enriching lives of underprivileged orphans from developing nations and working with children with developmental and physical disabilities. HOW DR. KEMP ENVISIONED A MODEL’S SMILE: In 2017, when Sofie won the Miss Tennessee Teen crown, she and her team set their goal to win the Miss Teen USA crown. One of the steps to achieving this goal was to improve her smile. However, there was a brief window of time in which to help Sofie, due to her timeline of photo shoots and the date of the national pageant. “The idea was to use our specialized technology and expertise to achieve the transformation of Sofie’s smile in this very short period,” Dr. Kemp says. “I’m excited to have had a small part in helping Sofie achieve her goals by giving her a winning, beautiful smile.” He says Sofie tells him that almost every person who meets her for

The concept of fast, friendly and professional laundry and dry cleaning services took off, and now he handles pickups and drop-offs for clothing, uniforms and linens.  “I like to think of it as a quality laundry service at my clients’ doorsteps,” Kelly says. As a mobile delivery provider, Kelly partners with a dry cleaning and laundry company.  Based on what he sees day to day, he suggests for the best returns on investments that guys really focus on keeping their trousers and button-down shirts in the best shape they can. He says using a lint ball on trousers is a good idea. Additionally, washing brandnew clothes with a little salt during the first wash cycle helps set the dye and resists fading, he adds.  “One big step that really helps is to sort clothes properly so they don’t bleed during washing,” he says. “I also recommend routinely checking the hems of pants to see if they’re falling apart.” Regarding dark stains in shirts, Kelly advises dabbing

stains with lemon juice until the shirts can be cleaned thoroughly. He warns not to rub the stained area, however, as that will damage the fibers of clothes and spread the stain. “And when dry cleaning, be sure to pick an ecofriendly cleaner, because certain chemicals can wear down clothing while also irritating your skin,” Kelly says.  Kelly’s also working on a clothing app for his mobile service so clients, who also are on the go, can receive notifications when their orders are ready and Kelly is on his way to deliver them. ConciergeCleanersNash.com Concierge Cleaners owner Kelly Webster says his team works closely with  clients to customize their services to specific laundry or dry cleaning needs and circumstances. When a customer calls the office, the Sokols schedule a free, no-obligation consultation, which often takes place within 24 hours. The first thing a designer does is walk into the space with the customer to find out what is working and what is not. This allows the designer to know what to focus on. “Our designers are well trained to know what’s going to be the most functional design for the space, but they also base the design on what the customer’s interests and wants might be,” Sandra says. They basically bring a showroom on wheels to the home, which consists of a mini closet, color samples and other types of samples and pictures. They start with a great template and then customers can add options from the a la carte menu. This way, they can pick and choose what is most important to them while staying within their budget. In one sitting, which takes about one and a half  to two  hours, they can design, measure and price the entire space. Once the plan is finalized and ready to go, an appointment can then be made for the installation date. “What we want our customers to understand is that it’s not just a job for us,” Sandra says. “It really is something that we love doing, and we enjoy being in this business.” 615.261.8700, Nashville.ClosetsByDesign.com

THE ART OF SHOE RECRAFTING POTTER & SONS ARTISANS BARE THEIR "SOLES"

WHEN SEEKING A SENSATIONAL SHOE REPAIR SHOP, LOOK STRAIGHTAWAY TO POTTER & SONS SHOE ARTISANS. Owners and brothers Trent and Heath perform quality repairs and offer finely crafted sandals and flip-flops.  They work tediously on each repair to ensure best results. For five years, they’ve fitted Brentwood residents with handsome, high-quality footwear repairs guaranteed to last for years, even generations.  Brentwood Lifestyle recently asked the brothers about their personalized shoe re-crafting, and Trent summarized: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE SHOE REPAIR BUSINESS?   We both graduated from UT-Knoxville, so being in the shoe business isn’t what we set out to do. Heath was a teacher for metro Nashville schools, and I was in the corporate healthcare field.  As a side hobby, Heath learned how to make bespoke shoes, and as a side gig, I started a pick-up/delivery shoeshine service for businesses around Nashville. One day, the owner of what used to be Brentwood Shoe & Luggage Repair told me he was retiring and asked if we were interested in buying the business. With 30 years of built-up clientele coming with the acquisition, we decided to make the leap. CONTINUED >
