TIMES PAST A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY THROUGH THE AGES
DICKENS OF A CHRISTMAS MAIN STREET WILL UNDERGO A PICTURESQUE TRANSFORMATION AS THE 35TH ANNUAL DICKENS OF A CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL COMES TO DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN THIS MONTH. Against the backdrop of Victorian-era buildings, visitors will feel like they’ve gone back in time to when Charles Dickens was alive and Tiny Tim was riding on his father’s shoulder. “We actually have a brand-new revamped section of the festival,” says Megan Hershey, chief operating officer of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County. “We’ve gotten some great feedback from our Downtown Franklin Association members as well as the general public that they would really love Dickens to be more of a theatrical festival. That’s really what it was intended to be when it started.” Folks dressed in Victorian-era costumes and as Dickens’ storybook characters will gather on sidewalks while period dancers will take over the streets. Victorianera craft demonstrations, such as candle making and weaving, will be on display, while carolers stroll by singing holiday songs. Pop-up musicians, both adults and children, will be interspersed throughout the festival playing accordions and fiddles. “This year is probably going to be the most authentic Dickens-era holiday festival that we have done. We’re really honoring it as a theatrical festival,” Megan says. There will also be a Holiday Town Sing, where the public can join in and enjoy their favorite holiday tunes. There will be plenty of activities for children and families, plus booths filled with a variety of delicious food and drinks. The Dickens of a Christmas Festival, sponsored by First Citizens National Bank, attracts anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000 attendees each year. As usual, most of

The festivals in town, which also include Pumpkin Fest and Main Street Festival, were originally started as a joint venture between the Downtown Franklin Association and the Heritage Foundation, which have now merged as a means of bringing tourism and traffic to downtown Franklin. “These festivals have now become part of our cultural heritage,” Megan says.

Creating Beautiful Smiles
“I have had the opportunity to travel abroad to many different and amazing countries for modeling, been featured in countless magazines and advertisements, walked across the stage at Miss USA. Now I’m enjoying my passion of creating beauty daily at my salon in downtown Franklin. My smile, whether meeting a new client or posing for a picture, is always noticed and commented upon. Each and every time I’m asked, I recommend Dr. Kemp!”

After completing her role within the Miss USA pageant, Kristen continues to model. She also has become one of the industry’s most successful hair and makeup artists. In 2013 Kristen took charge of a small team that worked backstage doing hair and makeup at Paris Fashion Week. In addition to helping shape the designer’s vision and leading the team toward that goal, Kristen accepted the coveted role of modeling the finale dress to close the show, one of her long held dreams.

JULIA NOLAN HAS SPENT THE MAJORITY OF HER LIFE DEDICATED TO THE PERFORMING ARTS. She grew up in South Florida where she starred in national television commercials, attended a performing arts high school in Memphis, Tennessee, and then went on to Wagner College, a conservatory for musical theater in New York City. Julia’s distinguished career has taken her to many places and allowed her to wear many hats within the industry, including producer. She created a nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth theater in Idaho Falls, Idaho, The Foundation for Performing Arts, and produced at least five productions a year. But it’s her passion for performing that took her to Japan for five years.
Happy Holiday
“I absolutely loved living in Japan. It was an incredible experience,” Julia says. “I first went over to perform at Tokyo Disneyland, which was one of the best times of my life! The people are wonderful, and the culture fascinating! While there, I had several number one hits on the radio, recorded for movie soundtracks, filmed numerous commercials and was even the voice for different video games.” The ardent vocalist is excited to now be living back in America, particularly Franklin, close to Music City. Julia had the opportunity to perform with Lee Greenwood at his theater in Sevierville. “He is unbelievably talented and a gracious performer to share the stage with. Not a show went by that I didn’t shed a tear each night when the American flag dropped on his famous song, ‘God
GETTING IN THE SPIRIT WITH JULIA NOLAN
Bless the USA.’ Veterans would stand up all across the audience. It got me every single show!” Asked if she ever gets nervous performing, she reveals, “I’ll be honest, I was born to perform! I am

so grateful for the gift I have to sing that instead of getting nervous, I get excited to share my love of the stage. I absolutely love every single second of being on stage singing and performing; I just wish I could do more. ... I definitely never tire of being on stage.”

Christmas dinner "My husband, Patrick, is from London, England, and is the best cook ever. On Christmas Eve, he makes Cornish pasties, a yummy meat and potato pastry. He makes the most amazing roast dinner each Christmas Day (he changes the menu every year from roast beef, pork or turkey). His roast potatoes, turnips and carrots are to die for! Home Staging Tips WITH EXPERT ADVICE FROM SOUTHERN ATHENA ARTICLE LIZ GATLIN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
MANY PEOPLE THINK THEY HAVE TO DO A LOT OF IMPROVEMENTS TO GET THEIR HOME READY TO SELL, BUT THIS COULDN’T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. Our friends at Southern Athena suggest focusing on just a handful of projects with a high return on investment (ROI) that will actually give you more bang for your buck and help get top-paying buyers to the table.
Tip 1: Appealing to More Buyers = More Money for Your Home Buyers will make a split decision concerning your property before they even get through the door. In order to appeal to the masses, you will need great photos and a neutral backdrop that highlights the best aspects of your home. First, declutter. Pack and remove 75% of all visible items. Then hire a professional cleaner to ensure your home looks sparkling and clean. Last, we almost always suggest painting any rooms with bold colors to give them a more neutral palette. 52
Franklin Lifestyle | December 2019
Tip 2: Fixing Only the “Deal-Breakers” You don’t need to fix every item on your to-do list in order to sell for top dollar. Many buyers will complete a formal inspection and pick the requested repairs at that time. Focus only on repairs that would scare or intimidate a buyer prior to them making an offer. The money you spend elsewhere might be money down the drain. Fix the following “deal-breakers” before going to market: + Roof or plumbing leaks + Foundation or structural problems + Major safety issues + Termite, mold or odor remediation
Tip 3: Focus on Curb Appeal It’s no surprise that Southerners love spending time outdoors and want to feel welcomed when they enter your home. The number one improvement project with the highest ROI year after year is to replace or paint your front door. Put out a welcome mat, and spruce up your outdoor spaces so buyers can see themselves loving life at your home for years to come.

SHAVED BRUSSELS SPROUT AND K ALE SAL AD
INGREDIENTS + 5-7 Tuscan kale stems + 1 pound Brussels sprouts + 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds + 1 Gala apple, thinly sliced DRESSING + 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil + Juice from 1 orange + 2 tablespoons stone-ground mustard + 1/2 red onion, minced + 1 tablespoon salt + 1 tablespoon black pepper METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Once heated, put sunflower seeds on a sheet pan and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Roast for 6-7 minutes or until golden brown. 2. Meanwhile, prepare salad. De-rib the kale, place each leaf on top of one another, roll tightly and slice so that the kale forms thin strips. Put kale into a bowl. To slice Brussels sprouts, cut the end off each, slice in half lengthwise, put both halves face down and thinly slice. Once all the Brussels sprouts are chopped, put into the bowl with kale. Toss in apple slices. 3. To prepare the dressing, combine the lemon juice, mustard, onion, salt and pepper. Stir and add in olive oil. Pour dressing over salad and massage with your hands for a few minutes. This will help the bitterness of the kale and sprouts to break down. 4. Top with roasted sunflower seeds and serve. 5. If you have time, allow the salad to sit in the refrigerator for a few hours so the dressing soaks into the salad well.

Franklin Lifestyle | December 2019
KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.
RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

Franklin Lifestyle | December 2019
NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.
This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
