February isn't much of a month so far as months go. It has only 28 days (or 29 in a leap year... this year, in fact), it's cold and gray. Not much happening nationally other than Valentine's or President's Day which, personally, I could take or leave either of

those. That being said, I am so happy that February is The Artists month at Fayette County Lifestyle! I love the arts. Humans are blessed with the ability to appreciate beauty and for that I am truly grateful. When thinking of ideas for our Artists issue, we wanted to be sure to highlight some amazing local talent who brighten our community using an array of different mediums. You'll find pottery that is useful and charming. Textured oils on canvas that bring cheer to the soul. Inventive use of sheet music and pages from beloved books. And photographs made into wood decor? Absolutely! Steampunk metal and wood work, all of which are outstanding conversation pieces, let alone creative industrial art. Even food can be artful and when you mix art with deliciousness. Yes please, I'll have two!

Local favorites are Cloudland Canyon State Park, the Enterprise South Nature Park, and Pointe Park. HEIRLOOM MARKET CO. & BAKESHOP SCRUMPTIOUS TREATS AND STUNNING DRINKS. HOW ONE BAKESHOP IS MASTERING THE ART OF DESSERT AND COFFEE.

IN OCTOBER, A VERY IMPORTANT SPOT OPENED UP HERE IN FAYETTE COUNTY. One that would give the many talented makers a place to showcase and sell their work. A comfortable dwelling for residents to enjoy homemade treats and carefully made drinks with family and friends. Justin and Laura Gibson opened Heirloom Market Co. & Bakeshop in hopes that the community would shop small and eat local. Neighborhood artisan’s setup booths in one of the nooks and crannies of Heirloom, encouraging shoppers to wind through the expansive space, and leave with one-of-a-kind gifts. Come hungry! Before shopping, you can enjoy the bakeshop and the many delights it has to offer. The bakery specializes in donuts, duffins and an assortment of cakes. Give the banana cake with caramel icing a try, it doesn’t get more southern than that. They also serve savory foods such as sandwiches, tacos, breakfast bowls and more. Nearly everything is baked in house, with the exception of their gluten-free options which they outsource. Some treats have a special meaning or namesake. For example, if you see a purple donut, that is the “Purple Princess”, named after Justin and Laura’s 4yo niece who was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer. The purple donut is a way to bring awareness to the disease and honor their niece.

KATIE MATTSON, PEACH STATE MADE

Katie Mattson has been creating custom rustic photo boards on wood for over three years. She will take a cherished photo and burn it onto a piece of distressed wood. Sealing the photo will ensure its quality and the result is a board that looks like it’s been in a fire with ash marks and burnt edges. She is creating a timeless piece that will be passed down for many generations. Mattson is freezing a special moment in time for her customers. “I love that I can take a memory from someone's life and make it into a beautiful piece of art. Every photo has a story behind it and my customers love to share that story with me. Some stories make me cry and some make me laugh.” Teaming up with local photographers has helped Mattson reach even more customers here in Fayette County. She receives unique photos from people who are proud of something in their lives. She’s seen photos of families, flags, animals, shoes and more. HARRY TALLMAN, WOOD & METAL CREATIONS Steam punk, rustic and industrial. That is how Harry Tallman of Wood & Metal Creations would describe his lamps. Harry became interested in this rare craft during his time as an activities director for an assisted living facility. “I realized the seniors were not utilizing skills they acquired over many years in the work place or that pertained to their careers,” Harry states. “This idea was a way to engage them in activities that would increase their cognitive function and enhance their creativity and mental sharpness.” Each lamp is made out of wood and metal with a variety of gears, pulleys, brass gauges and more. He begins by placing these pieces on a worktable, “I start grabbing, fitting, positioning and assemble what actually becomes a pretty cool piece.” Once, there was an antique porcelain bed pan on the table and guess what… it was used in one of his lamps. In 2014, he turned his passion into a job, making wood and metal lamps for the public. Each lamp is unique and artistic, yet functional for the everyday home or office.
