Boulder native, Broker Associate Leeds School of Business - University of Colorado

Our Boulder County lifestyle offers so much to everyone that lives here. As a Boulder native, I’m thankful for the opportunity to share this lifestyle with not only my clients, but also my family. Having been a contractor and the son of a home builder, I’ve always been attracted to the tangibility of real estate. Figuring out ways to change, improve or add value to a property comes naturally. My goal as a real estate professional is to provide an intangible service to market a tangible good in a way that builds lasting confidence and trust.

Last Call for 2019... AS ALWAYS, DECEMBER IS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH TIME COMMITMENTS. From start to finish, it’s an exciting and occasionally haphazard sprint to The New Year. In many ways, our December issue reflects as much. There are gifts to give, museum exhibits to see, charitable donations to freely offer to those in need; there are ski trips to plan, desserts to to consume, wine to pair; there are concerts to attend, fly rods to fish with, and renovated homes to see. There are traditions to abide by, and traditions to begin.

But December is also filled with opportunities to slow down and find happiness, even if it takes a little extra effort to do so. The holidays can be crazy, they can be messy, and they can come and go before a person has time to reflect on everything that took place in a year’s time. Don’t be the person that watches December 2019 cruise by without remembering to reflect on the closing chapter of the decade.

LIVE FOR LIVE MUSIC PRESENTS: TURKUAZ WITH SWATKINS & THE POSITIVE AGENDA Drip painting entails actively splashing myriad colors on canvas. Popularized by Jackson Pollock, Janet Sobel, Max Ernst, and other 20th century luminaries, the artform itself relies on action and motion. In a similar fashion, energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances. The Gift That Keeps On Giving THE INSPIRING STORY OF THERE WITH CARE'S HOLIDAY GIFT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS

HOW HAS THE PROGRAM EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? HOW HAS THERE WITH CARE HAD TO ADAPT TO NEW CIRCUMSTANCES/DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE TO SERVE? Since 2005, There With Care has been helping families in Colorado. The organization has served nearly 4,000 families facing life-threatening illnesses. By listening to each family and tailoring support to meet their individual and unique situation, There With Care has grown to provide a broad range of services, meeting families where they are during this critical time. As each family is referred by a social worker, there is an opportunity to learn from the hospitals where the greatest needs are and where to best

ARTICLE CHANTEL ELLERINGTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THERE WITH CARE

focus resources in order to make the most meaningful impact. WHAT ARE THE MOST CHALLENGING PARTS OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON FOR THERE WITH CARE? The holidays can be a busy time, but also a particularly stressful one for a family facing the critical illness of their child. When a child is diagnosed, one parent is often forced to quit their job. This puts a tremendous financial strain on a family, and day-today obligations become overwhelming. For these families, preparing for the holidays is one more thing adding to their stresses. There With Care steps in to reduce the added stresses, giving families some normalcy and a chance for them to focus on their kids. During the holidays, the There With Care Holiday Program provides support to families, while the organization balances the ongoing services that hold a family together including grocery deliveries, transportation assistance, and more.

38

Boulder Lifestyle | December 2019

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THERE WITH CARE'S IMPACT GROW OVER THE YEARS? There With Care currently serves an average of 175 families each day in Colorado. In the last five years, that number has more than doubled and the needs continue to grow. With the trust of the hospitals we support, all of the services are directed to the families in the greatest need. HOW MANY FAMILIES WERE HELPED THIS LAST YEAR? In 2018, There With Care served 575 families through the life-threatening illness of their child. In 2019, There With Care is projecting to serve nearly 650 families in a medical crisis. HOW HAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THERE WITH CARE'S WORK CHANGED OVER TIME? Since beginning There With Care in 2005, the organization has evolved through community engagement. Whether it’s the gift of volunteered time and/or in-kind or discounted services, all the individuals and businesses who participate in the mission bring something that is helpful in supporting a family in a medical crisis. Throughout the nearly 15 years since inception, There With Care has brought people together and helped to build a community around each family when they need it most. T

HE GREENEST HOME IS THE

EXISTING HOME. While the architects at Fänas Architecture love working with clients on new homes as well, this is a founding precept. It is a quality that  Dolf & Sue Kahl, the King Street homeowners, appreciated when hiring Fänas' Elizabeth & Dale Smith to help with their relocating back to Boulder.

Fänas (a Gaelic term with the duel meaning of “space” & “opportunity”) worked with the Kahl’s & their realtor in finding an existing home whose location, zoning requirements, and ‘bones’ leant itself to the Kahl’s desires. They ultimately landed on the 1973, 1,500 SF King Street ranch home in an optimal location, but with a dated interior and exterior aesthetic. In hopes of  creating a seamless flow from indoor to outdoor living, the design team  prioritized maintaining the original character of the home while simultaneously modernizing the aesthetic and opening up the compartmentalized floorplan. This included removing and relocating the majority of the interior walls, carving out portions of the existing eight-foot ceiling to create a new spacious vaulted ceiling in the living room, adding a new large operable window wall to capture the views of the Flatirons, as well as to access a new open-air patio. Fänas also decreased the size of the original living room, allowing for the addition of a new master bathroom and increased master closet.  The original fireplace was replaced with a free-standing gas fireplace that not only separates and defines the living room but is also the focal point within the space. All new finishes, fixtures, and lighting complete the interior transformation of the home.

IN THE SPIRIT SHARING HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WITH SOME OF OUR FAVORITE LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS

DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THE POWER OF TRADITION IMPACTS PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH JOY AND CHEER. Some families give to those in need while others express their care and love through thoughtful gifts as they gather with family members. No tradition is too small or insignificant, as each one holds a beloved meaning to those who share what matters to them most.  From awe-inspiring festivities to warming frigid fingertips, putting up decorations and unwrapping gifts, bringing people together to collaborate and celebrate in a meaningful way is really what holiday traditions are about.   To kick off the holiday season, we caught up with members of the local Boulder community to find out what traditions they are fond of, remember lovingly, and can’t live without.

LAURA IVERSON Interior Designer Laura Iverson grew up with many Norwegian holiday traditions, the most memorable and meaningful being that... her family owned a Christmas tree farm in Minnesota. One of the businesses was a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm, which was started by her father the year she was born. Each year in the spring, they’d plant trees; as the holidays came, they’d share the Christmas tree farm experience with many families. Simple, fun, and unbelievably cold, she learned the best and most valuable lessons about hard work, dedication, and generosity.  As a family, they focused on the true meaning of the holidays, in giving to others without the expectation of anything in return. A tradition of more than 30 years, this year will be the last with her father’s retirement.  However, the tradition of a freshly cut tree during the holidays will still live on as she’ll continue this tradition with her two boys.

CRAIG NEWTON The Newton family tradition is an entire family affair, as they come together to gather money for a family in need. Each family also enjoys picking out a local charity in their respective hometowns to volunteer and help out for at least a day.  Craig Newton, Spa Director of True Bloom Spa, says his wife Lisa came up with the idea about six years ago to support another family during what can be a very stressful time of the year for so many. Newton values the establishment of traditions that will last lifetimes and believes that the most incredible gifts are those of the moment.

WINE AND DINE A HOLIDAY WINE-PAIRING WITH TRUE STORY WINE

FIRST AS A SALESPERSON AND NOW AS A SPECIALIST AND WINEMAKER, WILLIAM SNOWDEN HAS BEEN PARTICIPATING IN THE COLORADO WINE INDUSTRY FOR OVER TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. Snowden has had a hand in crafting the wine lists for some of your favorite Boulder restaurants, including Oak on Fourteenth, Jax, the Med, and Brasserie Ten Ten.  In the early 2000s, some friends encouraged Snowden to take his specialized knowledge in wine and create his own winery; by 2003, he opened True Story Wine. Since then, Snowden has taken an active part in every step of the process, flying to Oregon several times a year to oversee the creation of a year's wine. With his years of experience crafting wine lists and his own wines, we thought who better than Snowden to turn to when it came time to put together a list of Boulder wine pairings for the Holiday season.

PARTING THOUGHTS

'tis the season WITH BRENT AND JACKIE FRIESTH, FOUNDER'S OF BOLDER INSURANCE

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEMORIES? Waking up on Christmas morning to homemade caramel rolls, a recipe that has been enjoyed in our family for over 60 years!  WHAT SHOULD LOCALS NOT MISS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? A stroll, carriage ride, or ice skating in downtown historic Louisville. FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEAL? Swedish meatballs with lingonberries. BEST CHILDHOOD GIFT RECEIVED? One year, all the siblings received new skis, boots, poles, and a pocket camera. (iPhones weren’t invented yet.) WHAT TRADITIONS HAVE YOU CONTINUED OVER THE YEARS AND WHY?   Taking a Family Christmas photo for the annual holiday greeting card has happened every year of my life. It's a tradition that we have continued with our family. I can honestly say it wasn’t always a fun process, but having these Christmas cards from every year is one of my biggest treasures. Also, food seems to surround our holiday traditions. Enjoying classic Scandinavian goodies like lefse, kringla, sandbakkels, flatbreads, decorated sugar cookies, and more! HOW ARE YOU SPENDING THE HOLIDAY THIS YEAR? This year we will be spending family time at home in Colorado; baking, eating, playing games, putting together puzzles, hiking, slowing down, and enjoying family! FAVORITE GIFTS TO GIVE? Matching family pajamas!  FOUNDATION OR CAUSES YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO AROUND THE HOLIDAYS? We donate to Imagine! Foundation to help create an opportunity for people of all abilities.
