husband and I started a list. On Fancy Day, the girls were dressed in their Sunday best, and along with the boys, walked to the old-timey restaurant down the street for brunch.   Sitting at tables of 10, they watched their leaders for cues then turned their attention (sort of) to me. Here's what I shared: 1. Always introduce yourself to the person next to you, if you don't know them. Or, say

hello and call them by name. 2. Look them in the eye and ask them something about themselves. Conversation is everything. 3. Listen politely to the waitress or waiter and acknowledge them. (I introduced our waitress, interviewed her briefly so the kids would understand this is her JOB but she's also a mother and grandmother). 4. Pass dishes clockwise and never reach across someone else's plate. 5. Forming the "OK" sign with both hands, note that the lower case "b" is on the left that's where your bread plate is.  The right hand forms a lower case "d" and that's how you can tell which water glass is yours. 6. When you're done eating, place your silverware in a neat pile at an angle, across your plate to signal to the waiter they may clear your plate.  7. Keep your hands in your lap on top of your napkin when not eating and dab your mouth gently, don't swab the deck. Manners are about respecting those in your company, more than just please and thank yous. This Thanksgiving, I hope you have an engaging conversation with your table-

ROAD TRIP

A letter from Abaco

LAST YEAR, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF STAYING AT THE ABACO CLUB. THE HOSPITALITY WAS UNENDING AND THE CLEAR WARM WATER AND BLUE SKY EMBRACED ME. I WROTE TO MY FRIENDS THERE TO ASK HOW THEY ARE COPING AFTER HURRICANE DORIAN AND THEY SENT THIS REPORT. Just over two months ago, Hurricane Dorian barreled through the islands of the Abacos and Grand Bahamas as a category five storm, the worst tropical storm on record in The Bahamas. Winds upwards of 180 mph and gusts up to 200 mph ravaged the islands. Our property, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, weathered the storm relatively well with damage that is to be expected from torrential rains and high wind, including downed trees, flooding in low-lying areas, and missing roof shingles, siding, railings, etc. Our new Yacht Club and Marina slips also made it through without incident aside from minor damage. However, the same cannot be said for other parts of the Abacos which experienced widespread and catastrophic destruction, and most sadly, loss of life.

WHEN HEALTHCARE CARES ABOUT YOU HIPNATION CARES FOR ALPHARETTA

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

14

Johns Creek Lifestyle | November 2019

TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DIFFERENT MODEL OF HEALTH CARE OFFERED AT HIPNATION IN ALPHARETTA, WE SAT DOWN WITH BRIAN HILL, MD, FOUNDER, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER. SGC: HIPnation believes that insurance should be used only for the high-cost health events—not things like physicals, the management of ongoing medical conditions, or the common cold. How can we switch gears out of the medial insurance mentality? BH: By simply looking at the auto insurance industry. You use your auto insurance when you have an accident—not when you put gas in your car, replace your windshield wipers, or change your oil. If those items were purchased through insurance, they would be significantly more expensive due to the all those working within that payment system. Taking insurance out of primary care removes 2-3 administrators from the physician’s office who don’t provide healthcare but instead only work with the insurance company. This simple step removes excess cost and re-focuses the office exclusively on patient care. SGC: How does the membership and payment work? BH: For $100/month, membership in HIPnation provides access to your primary care physician through extended office visits, phone calls, texting and telemedicine. There are no copays or costs for accessing your physician. This is covered through the membership fee. This also gives you access to HIPnationnegotiated pricing for labs, imaging, and specialty services with prices that are 30-90% less than what most people are paying now. Then we pair our membership with unique insurance products, which cover our members for the “big stuff.” This combination leads to better healthcare at less cost along with more affordable insurance.

“WE BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR QUALITY HEALTHCARE AND NOW THEY CAN.”

SGC: How do patients will benefit from this new care model? BH: HIPnation is a complete healthcare solution. Within our model, patients receive the quality care you’d expect from a concierge physician, plus they have access to HIPnation-negotiated pricing for labs, imaging, and specialty services. This model not only drives down costs, but studies show that people who have access to great primary care live longer, happier, healthier lives. SGC: What is the greatest misconception about concierge medicine? BH: That it is only for the wealthy. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity for quality healthcare and now they can. Our solution is generally up to 50% less than the traditional insurance-focused approach for individuals and up to 30% less for employer groups—and our members also receive this high-level concierge-style care! Less cost and better healthcare. This is why we call HIPnation smarter healthcare. 2500 Old Milton Parkway, Suite 210, Alpharetta HipNation.com 16

ROUNDING THE CORNER ONTO SOUTH

THE BRAZILIAN COURT, PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

LAKE TRAIL IN PALM BEACH ON MY PINK LILY PULITZER CRUISER, I WAS MET WITH A PARADE OF PALMS ON ONE SIDE AND A SHARP WALL OF HEDGES ON THE OTHER. The Lake Trail runs for 5 1/2 miles along the western A formidable kapuk tree along the Lake Trail

side of the town, overlooking Lake Worth Lagoon across to West Palm Beach. That morning, dog walkers and nannies shared the path with slow but deliberate walkers, an occasional jogger and well-preserved older women in good looking track suits. Most were caught up in their own thoughts, which was fine, because I was entranced with the story-high hedges hiding the mansions that lined the path.  Some were curvy and undulating, doorways precisely trimmed out revealing pretty wrought iron doors bejeweled with cut glass or gold ball accents. Others were boxy and sharp, trimmed high and tight like a new Marine recruit. Pink bougainvillea dotted 10-foot tall boxwood walls with bright white concrete ledges wedged in like Legos. Twenty-foot waving palm trees popped up like toast from thick hedges that stair-stepped up to the blue sky, all meticulously designed and religiously manicured to provide privacy for the sprawling homes beyond. Catching a glimpse of a hot pink stucco ranch was my reward for pedaling slowly. I tried not to gawk. It’s hard not to in Palm Beach. Opulence oozes from grand homes built during the Gilded Age and beautiful people spill out of the designer shops along Worth Avenue. But, there’s more to Palm Beach than just riches and treasure. In Palm Beach County, 47 miles of Atlantic coastline play host to sunbathers and water sport enthusiasts. In West Palm Beach, there is a growing foodie scene, with festivals galore attracting sports fans, artists and partiers.  We joined the West Palm Beach Walking Food Tour, stopping at six different restaurants over three hours, meeting chefs and tasting their signature dishes, learning about the community’s history and revitalization along the way.  There’s also a Historic West Palm Beach Neighborhood Food Tour, cooking classes and private tours offered by these entrepreneurs in the know.

The Flagler Museum is probably one of my favorite museums ever. Completed in 1902, this 100,000 square-foot mansion is magnificently preserved, full of sumptuous furnishings across 75 rooms. The façade of Whitehall is marked by massive marble columns and topped with a red barrel tiled roof. Built around the central courtyard, the house consists of two floors, an attic and a basement. Flagler’s private Railcar No. 91 is exhibited in the courtyard. original 1912 appearance, when Flagler traveled by this railcar along the Over-Sea Railroad to celebrate this phenomenal engineering feat and the completion of the FEC Railway from St. Augustine to Key West. Take the audio tour at your own pace. You will want to circle back to your favorite rooms. Stay at The Brazilian Court Hotel with a Beverly Hills feel. You’ll hear conversations in French and Italian in hushed tones in the small lobby, where plum velvet sofas look out into a courtyard, a cocoanut grove framed in white begonias. Tidy white canvas cushions upon black rattan furniture around a fountain beckon. It’s  much more intimate and private as compared to the grand dame down the street, The Breakers, the only longer running hotel in Florida. The Brazilian Court is home to Café Boulud, from internationally acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud. Sit on the shady patio for lunch and order the curried squash soup with lime yogurt, apple and cilantro and a cubano with yucca fries.  Book an appointment at the unassuming Kaffee’s Garden Spa in West Palm Beach, celebrating 20 years in business. My therapist, Tanya, found every knot, her touch reassuring and confident leaving me invigorated and relaxed.  If you visit around the holidays, watch for the tree lighting ceremony on Worth Avenue. GIVING BACK

ARTICLE LEE CHADWICK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

RE-ENGINEERING THANKSGIVING

THE JOY OF THANKSGIVING ISN’T FOUND IN THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION. The holiday becomes rewarding when we can find a path of renewed appreciation for this time-honored celebration that glorifies gratitude, as much as it does our collective history. Experiencing the best result comes from a gentle dance between safeguarding tradition and knowing how to SHAKE IT UP! Most important of all, the pleasure of your company means SO much more when you are cool, calm - and emotionally available.  The first-ever “Feast of Thanks” was shared by the original pilgrims in 1621 following their successful harvest. In that perilous New World meeting, the conditions to support life was clearly uncertain. In honoring Thanksgiving today, customary observation typically skips acorns or squirrel, but what about your mom’s 23-ingredient sweet potato casserole recipe?  Is that a delete that could cause a rebellion?  It seems we are experiencing an interesting change in the way Americans interpret gracious living. Not a revision or a correction, but a movement, a resurrection of civility. This is not surprising - Isn’t it clear we need an antidote to the rabid intensity of modern life?  32

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

Johns Creek Lifestyle | November 2019

There is an art to living the good life, but in 2019 we are all overcommitted. On the flip side, the unmitigated pressure most of us face to get it all done gives far more power to the sweet, simple experiences we share over a good  cup of coffee or a great glass of wine. Loving something delicious that someone else took the time to create for us is connecting. And taking the time to savor it, is enriching.  Maybe creating a slightly less challenging

menu

could

yield

a

more vibrant, happy holiday in your house. So, what to cook?  How do we navigate all of this while remaining comfortably in control?  Start off by skipping the brine in favor of a quick flavorful turkey rub. No basting, no constant vigilance, just leave the oven closed!

Turkey Rub Combine the following in a bowl:

ingredients + 1/2 cup olive oil + one stick fully softened salted butter at room temp  + 1/4 cup brown sugar  + 1 tablespoon paprika  + 1 tablespoon onion powder  + 1 tablespoon garlic powder + 1/4 teaspoon black pepper  directions Blend into a loose paste and rub all over the bird inside and out prior to placing it in a preheated oven. Double the recipe for a bigger bird.
