The Magic of Winter AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle in 2019! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again.

There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast-forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fastpaced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold

YouthBridge Community Foundation, 12977 N. Forty Drive #368,

guides individuals and companies through the charitable giving process that will not only provide instant gratification but last long after they have left this earth. The foundation started in 1877 as the General Protestant Children’s Home on Natural Bridge Road. The last child left the orphanage in 2005 due to changes in the model care of children, and YouthBridge transitioned from its role as a direct-care provider to a community foundation with a focus on children and youth. “We serve as the bridge between community resources and community need focused on children and youth,” says Chief Executive Officer Mike Howard. “So we partner with individual and community donors on how to turn their passions into philanthropy and incorporate their philanthropy into their wealth management plan. “We help them find the nonprofit in their community who is doing the best work that family wants to support,” he says.

Many times, people want to do the right thing but are not quite sure how to do it or where to invest their money, and this is where psychology enters the picture. Mike took a deck of cards on which were written some questions, and began to spread them on his desk. “When family comes in, we start with a conversation, and ask questions,” he says, picking up a card, and reading, “What motivates you?” He picks up another and reads, “If you could give to anything, what that would be?” Another asks, “What makes you happy? What makes you sad?” “It’s really about us doing a bit of psychology and counseling,” he says. “We give them the opportunity to be self-reflective.” Companies can put in money for tax purposes and build it like a 401(k) for charitable purposes. “We have a committee who reviews different organizations for the funds; we give the clients the information, and they tell us where they want their money to go,” Mike says. STAGES' ANDREW KUHLMAN LEADS WAY TO THE BIG APPLE

T O

IT SEEMS LIKE IT’S ALWAYS “SHOWTIME” IN NEW YORK CITY. And one local theatrical enthusiast enjoys leading visitors there to show off The City That Never Sleeps, especially during the December holiday season.  St. Louis’s STAGES  associate producer Andrew Kuhlman will escort a group of wide-eyed, adventurous souls from the St. Louis region during Dec. 5-9 on a sold-out 2019 NYC Holiday Weekend.  “No city comes alive like New York during the holidays. Its atmosphere changes. It’s magical and is such a beautiful place to be,” says Andrew. “These trips are one of my favorite parts of my job because on them we get a chance to build community and friendships among patrons.”

Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center

STAGES launched these special travel group visits in  2012, the same year he started with the organization. Since then, more than 300 patrons have taken part in at least 16 trips, including the Big Apple, for the ultimate theatre weekend. “The best way to see the world is the STAGES’ way,” he proclaims.  He adds that there’s nothing like tackling a new city with a 6-foot-5-inch tour guide (him) who smiles throughout the activities. “New York City is my home-away-from-home,” says the St. Louis native.  For one package price, travelers receive roundtrip airfare, deluxe hotel accommodations, tickets to Broadway productions, meals at popular Theatre District restaurants, sightseeing opportunities, transportation, as well as special tours and experiences designed and offered only by STAGES. A portion of the package price is also designated as a tax-deductible contribution to the organization.

He says he’s also created See/Stay/Eat/ Perform packets for the cities into which he leads travelers. “Because free time is important when visiting new places, I always plan some periods  during the trips when the guests can do what they’d like. But, because people’s buckets lists are different, it’s nice to have outlined options to choose from,” he adds.   The trips originally were born from the concept of St. Louis STAGES patrons wanting to see Broadway executions in New York of STAGES executive producer Jack Lane, who produced some extraordinary theatre, including  Peter and the Starcatcher  (Tony nomination),  Fun Home (Tony Award), The Humans (Tony Award) and The Play That Goes Wrong.

Andrew, also a Tony-nominated producer, says he thought the concept was fabulous and was glad to volunteer, given how well he knew New York’s entertainment intricacies. This year’s New York December trip includes:

“NO CIT Y COMES ALIVE LIKE NEW YORK DURING THE HOLIDAYS. ITS ATMOSPHERE CHANGES. IT ’S MAGICAL AND IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO BE.”

to London for eight days. Earlier this year, he’s also escorted groups to New York twice and Chicago. What travelers often notice during the New York trips, says Andrew, is that they’ve gotten used to Broadway-quality shows at STAGES in St. Louis. So, when they attend shows in the big city, those performances are done in very intimate, smaller spaces. “They come back with a whole new attention to details and better noticing all of the aspects of shows, such as choreography, makeup and costumes,” he adds. “Each  independent piece of the shows shine brightly.” Andrew hopes for another special December moment in New York during which huge, soft snowflakes begin falling on him and his group, such as they did previously one time at an outdoor market at Bryant Park Winter Village. “That’s where the best hot chocolate in the world can be found, to be sipped in front of a giant Christmas tree, with people skating and laughing in the background. It doesn’t get more holiday in New York than a perfect moment like that,” he says. The Time New York luxury hotel 34

AS DIFFICULT AS IT IS TO WITNESS, PARENTS DO GET OLDER. And there may be a time when one has to consider an assisted living, or a memory care facility. With such a difficult transition, for both parents and adult children, one property is doing its best to make this life change as seamless as possible. Stonecrest of Wildwood, located in the Wildwood Town Center at the fringe of Ozark mountain foothills, blends a touch of city and country with its unique take on senior living. Residents who are downsizing from a home can choose a studio, one- or two-bedroom private Assisted Living apartment, while still only steps away from shops and restaurants. This distinctive community features a variety of amenities, such as three restaurant-style meals, an anytime menu, as well as various snacks throughout the day. There is also a bistro, theater and fitness center with Occupational and Physical Therapy, computer and learning center, and outdoor living spaces. In addition, the facility engages its residents by scheduling holiday-specific events, such as a pumpkin carving contest, outings, lunches, tours, movie nights, and a variety of classes, such as baking and flower arranging, among other things. According to the daughter of one of the residents, the family was tasked to look for places by her mom that were nearby, as mom prepared to transition from her home to a living space that would still allow her as much continued independence as possible, combined with good nutritional options, a short commute for the family to visit, and with the capacity to increase the level of care when that became necessary.

“Stonecrest was the answer to all of these requests,” she wrote in a review. “The food is excellent, the facility has progressive levels of care, they are able to offer Mom a lot of autonomy and quite a bit of independence too. The true icing on the cake, however, is the staff. Everyone we met … was kind, caring, patient, and responsive. We have been blessed beyond measure with this literal answer to all of our prayers.” “We just love it here,” another resident enthused. For those seniors who may need more undivided attention due to memory loss and early-onset dementia, there is also a Memory Care community and a one-of-a-kind program titled “It’s Never Too Late.” The Bridges of Stonecrest program gives residents and their families the support they need for living with memory loss by providing residents with individualized, tailored suites, and a specially trained staff on hand 24-hours a day to assist as needed. In addition, caregivers engage those impacted by memory loss with activities specifically designed to stimulate brain function. “The supportive memory care at Stonecrest is delivered in a kind, compassionate way that is reflective of the residents’ lifestyles, routines and comfort levels,” according to its website. “The caregivers understand and respond compassionately to each resident’s emotions and changing abilities. Our care is designed to draw on the resident’s strengths and allows them to maintain existing abilities while filling gaps in life skills with an appropriate level of assistance.” Whether an aging parent simply wants a smaller, more manageable space that offers activities and opportunities for independence or a more structured environment with 24-hour care due to memory loss, Stonecrest at Wildwood tailors its offerings to suit the needs of each individual resident. His close collaborator and celebrated pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as the Jean-Paul and Isabelle Montupet Artist-in-Residence. Jean-Yves performed with the orchestra in September and will join Stéphane for two more programs—one each in January and May. Live radio broadcasts of all Saturday classical concerts on St. Louis Public Radio will continue for a 10th season. Night at the Symphony on the Nine Network continues for its fifth season. Stéphane is slated to direct the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for at least three seasons.  To get into this year’s holiday spirit, Stéphane personally recommends the following seven musical selections:
