and the capital I only happen once a year and each day after that we build on that number and that letter to reflect our assignment - Who am I and What am I doing? The challenge for me is to cull the list to a realistic number of ideas to implement. When we were kids, we'd sit with the Sears and JC Penney catalogs and detail all the toys we wanted. We'd put them on our lists and present them to our parents. They'd look them over and tell us to decide which toys we could get and share and bring them back the revised list. We'd go through multiple rounds of this right up to Christmas Eve. So, much like my childhood wish list for Santa, I work on my list, revise it many times right up to New Year's Eve where I've hopefully made some good choices and if not - there's always next year? The first issue of the year brings inspiration, motivation, introspection and some great recipes. The Eden Prairie Lifestyle team wish you and your New Year much success.  Mary Abeln Publication Director

Winter Planning

GREAT SPRING L ANDSCAPE PROJECTS

W

inter is a great time to get inspired and start making plans to create the outdoor environment that will be enjoyed with our friends and family during the warmer months. Great projects begin with planning. We offer the following thoughts to spark your creativity, and help you begin the process of designing and realizing your outside environment.

Assess Your Current Landscape Situation Get your warm attire, grab a pad of paper and walk your yard. Dream a bit- what do you want to achieve? Think about which plants were successes and which were not. Did you have plants that outgrew their space and will need to be moved or divided? What new plants would you like to try? Take a few moments and dream of a new and exciting project, like a patio or a water feature. Make sure to write it all down.

Become an artist and make a rough sketch of the area to reference later.

Think About Your Budget A good plan, broken down into goal increments such as this coming summer, next year, and the years following, will allow for a more budgetfriendly and realistic look at what is possible.

Do Your Research Planning and research is half the fun! Have any of your neighbors created great environments? If so, how did they do it? Look online at local plant catalogs and landscape examples to get your creativity flowing!

Plant Your Landscape at The Right Time of Year

for years to come if you plant them at certain times of the year. Look to gardening websites or ask your landscaper what times are best for the plants you have chosen for your outdoor space. Be sure to plan for the growth and maintenance of your environment. This will ensure a sparkling presentation for years to come. A great landscaping project that has been well planned and executed truly does enhance your home. The professionals at The Mustard Seed welcome the opportunity to assist homeowners in realizing their landscaping dreams. Even though winter is just beginning, now is a perfect time to let these experts help you plan your outdoor oasis for year-round enjoyment!

While you may be excited to get started on planting your trees and shrubs as soon as spring arrives, many plants will thrive better

ARTISTIC

Excellence SCHOOLED

HERE

The school year is off to an energetic start at the Performing Institute of Minnesota (PiM). This tuition-free charter High School now resides in Eden Prairie, where academics and college preparatory arts training merge with performance and hands-on learning opportunities. PiM is now excited to offer Media Arts and Visual Arts programs. These new majors join the ranks with current major programs in Theatre, Music, Dance, and Musical Theatre. Visual Arts students will expand their critical thinking skills and gain new understandings while working in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing and sculpture. Student Artists will develop their creativity, artistry and dedicated practice through the production of artwork, discussion, critique, and observation. The Visual Arts program is directed by Pat Benincasa, an awardwinning artist, whose passion for geometry is expressed through her dimensional glass sculptures, paintings and drawings. Most recently, Benincasa won first place in the “Innovate” category of the 2017 American Art Awards.

Interested in learning if PiM is right for your family?

Benincasa describes the environment at PiM as a small town feel, “The classroom turns into a creative community where students are challenged and nurtured to explore the range of their talents and develop their skills. There is a place in our program for both the novice who enjoys art, and the serious art student who wants to do intensive portfolio development!” In charge of the new Media Arts program is John Raasch. For the last fourteen years, Raasch has been building, running and teaching a great photography program at another district. That program has helped to guide a wide array of students in their artistic growth. Raasch is excited to bring his expertise and passion to our school and student artists. Engaging student artists through emerging technology in photography and film, classic-learning skills, coupled with new media and techniques, support the creation of personal, expressive work. Through hands-on assignments, Student Artists will explore moving image, stop-motion animation, sound, photography, digital arts and interactive media.

Taking Healthcare

“Home” to Seniors

WE ARE FOLLOWING THE JOURNEY OF TWO LOCAL WOMEN. When we introduced you to them last month, the elderly mom’s husband died and she was beginning to struggle with managing her health and her household alone. Her daughter helped her hire Matrix Home Healthcare Services to manage her medical and personal needs. (Check out our first installment of this serial online at edenprairielifestyle.com.) Matrix is owned by Karen Lawrence, an accomplished nurse who has dedicated her 30-plus year career to taking care of people facing the challenges of old age. She respects and enjoys them. She honors their wisdom and potential with both basic healthcare and extras that help seniors enjoy every year of their lives. Their services include everything from basic personal care and help with housekeeping to complex medical care and extended hours care for people in hospice. 18

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | January 2018

PART 2 “Matrix staff made life better for all of us.” When we first started working with them, they visited mom several times a week to pitch in with housekeeping, laundry, and errands. They also helped manage her primary medical issues – diabetes and arthritis - and coached me on understanding her aging experience. Mom enjoyed the companionship so much it helped her adjust to living at home without our dad. She still missed him, but the loneliness was a little more tolerable with her new, capable friends. A few things happened that helped us realize mom needed more help. Her little dog was such a comfort to her, but she wasn't really able to take care of him anymore. Her arthritis pain was getting worse and she had started to lose weight and strength. We could tell from the sensor mat that she wasn’t heating up food in the microwave very often and we were worried about further diabetic complications. She also got scared at night and called me when she heard noises at least once a week. “Mom was really afraid to leave the home she’d shared with our dad.” We visited several upscale assisted living facilities but we really couldn’t picture our reserved mom adapting to the big building lifestyle: she’d heard stories about cliques at dining room tables and was intimidated by elevators. We realized that some of the services mom would need in a big senior care home would be billed a la carte. Mom could still stay in her house and get the same services from Matrix staff living with her. Matrix arranged for two people to help her. They took turns living with and caring for her, one week on, one week off. They were like roommates who anticipated mom’s every need. They cooked for her, they managed her medications, they changed her sheets and did her laundry. Mom still got to enjoy her dog without having to take him out or worry about feeding him. Her caregivers were friendly companions equipped with all the skills and patience mom needed. They communicated well with each other and me, the rotations helped keep them fresh and mom benefited from having two people compare strategies to optimize her well being. She needed help getting to the bathroom and they made her feel safe. She had trouble with the remote control and they helped her find channels she liked. They dialed her phone when she wanted to call my siblings. Matrix arranged her physical therapy appointments so she’d stay as agile as possible. I was worried about all the things they had to juggle but they were so good with mom. Even though mom’s memory kept getting worse, CONTINUED >

TAKING HEALTHCARE “HOME” (CON TI N U ED)

her arthritis was painful, her mobility was getting limited and her circulation was troublesome, it was obvious that the best choice for our mom was to be home. The Matrix staff was so adept and caring, she barely noticed how much they were doing for her. She’d just cuddle with her dog, we’d sip on coffee and she’d reminisce about dancing with my dad while we listened to her music. I learned so much from Karen. She anticipated mom’s upcoming needs and helped me prepare myself for next steps. I trusted her to know the best resources in our area and she never let me down. I still spent a lot of time with my mom but it was fun for both of us. I didn’t have to fuss around the house because everything was so well kept, her healthcare was top notch and her condition was so well documented, I could just enjoy my time with her. The staff even asked us to find big band music CDs and have plenty of photo albums around so she could show them pictures. That, and their kind advice to never tell mom she was repeating herself, helped me trust that they really cared about her.

According to Lawrence, “Every family is different and each care plan is unique to the needs of our clients and their loved ones. We’re there where and when you need us so that you’re happy with the care we provide. When you visit your mom or dad, you can enjoy your time with them instead of doing things like changing their sheets, helping them bathe or counting their pills.” Unlike the lady in our serial, some people are energized by a big facility filled with dozens of new people and a bustle of activities. Matrix can also supplement the care provided in these facilities, too. Many services can be provided by Matrix staff; they can also help families find other resources they need for medical conditions, companionship, and personal care. For seniors who want to stay in their own homes, Matrix can often create plans with families to make it work for their clients. “Home” is where you are, according to the Matrix philosophy. They create a plan for clients across the wide array of living options, then follow through with compassionate care. MEET JOHN CAL: A CHAT WITH THE CREATIVE GENIUS BEHIND PHILLY

A MUSIC MAN ARTICLE CINDY MENNENGA

EDEN PRAIRIE’S JOHN CAL HAS HAD A LIFELONG BURNING PASSION FOR MUSIC. Even as a young kid, he began writing songs and playing in bands, nurturing his love of music and feeding his soul. A few years ago, he was at a crossroad in his professional life. A corporate reorganization provided Cal with an opportunity to once again dream and pursue his lifelong passion. Based on a true story and centered around a family butcher store set in Yonkers, New York, Cal wrote the musical Philly. John Cal’s family owned a neighborhood butcher shop in Yonkers for about 50 years. Typical of the era, almost all of the family members worked in the store. After high school, John went away to attend college. After graduating college, he took a job working in corporate America but didn’t care for it, so he returned home and started working in the family store again. But, his passion wasn’t to be denied: He wanted to write songs.

22

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | January 2018

A DREAM IS BORN One night, Cal was at a health club and overheard a woman singing in the ladies’ locker room. He was so struck by her voice that he loitered by the locker room door, asking each woman who came out if she was the one who had been singing. He waited there until the owner of the mysterious voice finally emerged. After meeting Phyllis, he invited her to sing at a demo session because he loved her voice. A short time later, Cal had a vision or a dream—he’s not sure which—but he visualized a band with a certain type of sound, and he could see Phyllis as the lead singer. He wanted to call the band Philly and asked Phyllis to change her name, she did, and so the story begins. Thirty years later, John Cal was encouraged to write a Broadway musical and he based it on his story and the band he produced back in 1979. Set among the backdrop of his family's butcher store, featuring larger than life characters, Philly is a heartwarming tale about a band that dared to dream. Cal describes the music of Philly as “classic rock meets Walt Disney.” BRINGING THE SHOW TO THE STAGE The show was completed in 2012. Cal determined that he wanted to find a stage to workshop the musical to see how it would play out on the stage. This would enable Cal and his production team to “mature” the musical and make any necessary changes to improve the impact of the story. Philly is a large cast musical with 24 original musical numbers! It was definitely written with the goal of becoming a Broadway musical. John Cal quickly learned that there was a dearth of theatres in the Twin Cities that had the capacity to handle a new original musical production that was that large, so he needed to be creative in finding a theatre. He began networking within the theatre community in Minnesota. During his networking, Cal eventually learned of the Sabes Theatre which is located within the Jewish Community Center in St. Louis Park. He says, “It’s a beautiful 300 seat theatre. I approached

TAKING HEALTHCARE “HOME” (CON TI N U ED) lights and sound system and help get the theatre back in peak condition in the hope that it would reinvigorate the theatre.” They worked out a mutually beneficial agreement and word of the musical sparked a lot of interest within the theatre community. Several people stepped forward to participate in bringing the production to the stage. As a result of this influx of talent, the workshop concept turned into a full-blown production. Cal says, “We rehearsed the show for about six weeks. The opening weekend was at 70 percent capacity, and we were sold out a few days later. In fact, the first run of Philly was nominated for and won the BroadwayWorld Minneapolis Best Original/New Work award in 2014.” BROADWAY, HERE WE COME! “Soon, people from Disney heard about it and reached out to us. We had a major rewrite and did a second show about a year later at the same place and had 11 shows. The average time to get a show up on the stage on Broadway can take from eight to nine years because it is continually in the process of getting ‘matured.’ Today there is also a three year wait to get into a theatre on Broadway, because there are only 41 theatres.” He adds, “I believe the show will one day get to Broadway.” After the second show, they felt they were ready to take the show to New York and start shopping it. They received critiques of the musical from professionals which helped them evolve the show. Soon they began networking within the theatre community in New York and connected with key players to facilitate a “29Hour Reading” which is a special contract that allowed them to hire professional Broadway actors at a reasonable rate, for 29 hours. During that timeframe, they worked on both the songs and the book (theatre lingo for the script). Attendance to their 29-Hour Reading was by invitation only and it was previewed on October 13, 2017. Cal says the theater professionals and investors who saw the preview loved the music and the story—and the feedback they received was overwhelmingly positive. Since then Cal and his team have been incorporating the suggestions for change from the experts on Broadway.

A DREAM REALIZED Cal enthuses, “Philly is a family show. It’s about pursuing your dream and believing in it so strongly that you pull other people into your dream. Then, when you’re almost there, something happens—and you have to make a choice between your dream and real love—and of course, you choose real love because there is nothing more important in life than real love, family and friends.” Of creating the musical and working on the ongoing “book” changes, Cal says, “I’ve never worked so hard, learned so much or had so much fun since I was 25 years old. It’s just rejuvenated my life. When you get a second chance to do what you love, it’s a wonderful thing!” The musical has definitely built up momentum over the past few years and as it has gone through a maturation process—much like a fine wine improves over time—Philly is chugging on ever so steadily toward its ultimate destination and opening on Broadway. To John Cal and his team, we say, ‘Break a leg!’

to tailoring healthy eating plans for different individuals. In Mary’s kitchen, “we fill up with conversation, not just food.” The depth and breadth of her knowledge is impressive, but Mary’s nutrition advice also rings true because she loves good food and makes cooking it accessible. She teaches cooking classes in her cozy kitchen and takes clients on instructive grocery shopping tours. She’s also realistic. Lots of diets take cheese off the menu. Mary suggests choosing full-flavored, grated cheeses, optimizing flavor with smaller amounts. She enriches soup with leftover Parmesan rind. She recommends “meatless Mondays,” but doesn’t expect clients to give up meat entirely. She even acknowledges that breast milk naturally programs us to crave sweet foods. A fan of leafy greens, whole grains and plant based proteins, Mary chooses to “crowd out” less wholesome foods rather than listing taboos. Mary customizes plans for clients, but also coaches Prairie Health Companion’s universal truths. “Stick with it.” Pursuing your best self is a life-long process. Learn to “fit-out” rather than fitting in. You may be an outlier when forgoing French fries or taking the stairs when your coworkers opt for the elevator. “Find your own personal reasons for change.” Understanding your motivation helps you stay on track. She also suggests finding a role model who inspires you. Mary coaches people out of her home office and teaches cooking classes in her own kitchen. She also consults with clients via phone.
