IT WAS ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO THAT I FIRST STUMBLED UPON THIS LITTLE SEASIDE HAMLET CALLED DEL MAR. I found this village merely by accident as a tourist for a night or two on my first visit passing through San Diego on business. The distinctive landscape and the active outdoor lifestyle stayed with me for years to come. When I was lucky enough to move my family West to Southern California from the East Coast (New Jersey), the village of Del Mar was the first place that came to mind as a place we’d love to put down some roots. We have already become a part of this vibrant community with its amazing schools, creating new memories as a family and raising our two boys as Southern California beach kids. I am excited to embark on this new journey as the publisher of Del Mar Lifestyle. I want to thank Dan and Jennifer Austin for their guidance, creative vision and tireless contribution to Del Mar Lifestyle over the last few years. I look forward to continuing on with that vision to bring stories to your home each month of the great people and businesses that make Del Mar and Carmel Valley such unique places to live, work and play. In this month’s issue, our focus is female. As Mother’s Day approaches, the time feels right to shine a light on talented women doing important things. I hope you’ll

NTERIOR DESIGNER SOL QUINTANA WAGONER BRINGS CONTEMPORARY CALM TO A RENOVATED DEL MAR SHOWPIECE

SOL QUINTANA WAGONER WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ARGENTINA. She was involved in the design of various projects in Buenos Aries before moving to Southern California where she now practices her passion for artistic home design. A recognized design innovator, Sol is a Senior Designer with Jackson Design and Remodeling. This Del Mar renovation project named “Architectural Artistry” with panoramic views of the Pacific landed Sol two more awards: a GOLD Master Design Award, and a Contractor of the Year award in the additions category for 2017. The homeowners wanted to embrace the beauty of their natural surroundings while respecting the significant architectural integrity of their home. With no land to expand on, Sol’s imaginative design was achieved by the relocation of the kitchen and an addition on the second level. The home conveys a memorable visual statement with indoor/outdoor living that is enhanced by an open design. With the removal of interior walls, the home now contains floor-to-ceiling folding glass doors to emphasize the connection to the outdoors. Spectacular details of the outdoor living space include a louvered roof, glass side panels, infrared heating elements, fireplace, entertainment center and barbecue area making it a comfortable home for all seasons.

Lindsay Perry CLAIM TO FAME: Surfer-singer-songwriter Lindsay Perry first gained fame as a member of Billabong’s Women’s Surf Team. Last year, her profile was raised with the release of her EP “The Dark Revival,” which hit No. 1 on the iTunes blues chart. In March, her single “Dancin’ With the Devil” was featured on an episode of the Netflix series “Jessica Jones.” ORIGIN STORY: “I taught myself how to play guitar at 14.” Once Lindsay started riding, though, music had to wait. “At 15, I got really into surfing and, mind you, I could not even stand up on a surfboard, but that was my teenage rebellion.” It resulted in her moving out at the age of 16. “I would surf every day. Then I started traveling full time at 18. And then, Billabong found me at 21 or 22, and I signed with them.” THE ROAD SO FAR: When Lindsay found a musical mentor in Scott Russo, of Unwritten Law fame, that connection led her to sign with Pacific Records, founded by Del Mar resident Brian Witkin.

Mahjuba Levine CLAIM TO FAME: Next-level polish, on-trend togs and a wardrobe that makes sense are what personal stylist Majuba Levine doles out to her many Del Mar clients. ORIGIN STORY: “My mom had a saying: ‘Always be dressed up when you walk out the door because you never know who’s going to be on the other side.’” THE ROAD SO FAR: “I was a personal shopper for Saks Fifth Avenue—actually the youngest personal shopper they had ever hired. Eventually, my clients kept wanting me to shop for them at other places. In 2001, Majuba founded her company, Closet Therapy. CLOSE CAUSE: Majuba has volunteered with The International Rescue Committee, and she holds the mission of the Malala Fund close to

her heart. Both are causes she can relate to, having arrived in the U.S. with her family at age 9 as a refugee of the war from Afghanistan.

a c t i v i s t m o m

CLAIM TO FAME: The Del Mar mama of two daughters (Riley, 9 and Embry, 7) is a founding member of the philanthropic organization Heights Cares and helms a parent-led initiative to bring mindfulness programming into schools. And then, of course, there’s Jazmin Blais’s day job. She runs a culinary consulting company with her husband, winner of Bravo’s “Top Chef All-Stars,” Richard Blais. Together the duo also hosts the popular podcast “Starving for Attention.” WHERE SHE’LL BE: Look for Jazmin organizing a kids’ sports equipment swap, breaking down 1,200 pounds of carrots alongside students for Feed San Diego, or donning her yoga-instructor hat and subbing in at one of the studios around Del Mar. When it’s time to eat, their own area restaurants—Crack Shack and Juniper & Ivy—are usual haunts, as is Boto Sushi Del Mar. STYLE SIGNATURE: “Richard sometimes refers to me as looking like I belong in Brooklyn because I’ll have on a skullie and a baggy sweater. So sometimes it’s eclectic, definitely.”

CLAIM TO FAME: The co-founders of local apparel company GracedByGrit are now sharing their piece of the $48 billion U.S. activewear sales pie, by incorporating the nonprofit GrittyGirls and pledging 1 percent of the company’s net sales toward programs that build resilience in girls. ORIGIN STORY: Kate Nowlan was a running coach helping Kimberly Caccavo train for a triathlon when they started talking workout clothes. “What Kimberly noticed as a chemical engineer was that the clothes might look great static, but once she started to actually move in them, they were not performing,” Kate says. THE ROAD SO FAR: Kate and Kimberly wanted to make a product using high-performance fabrics, adding pockets to waistbands and incorporating sun protection. They named the business for what they share in common:

Kathy Minarik CLAIM TO FAME: As the science teacher at Del Mar Heights Elementary, Kathy Minarik serves up weekly hands-on experiences to every student in the school, from kindergarten through sixth grade. DAILY GRIND: Kathy teaches a full day in her lab, coaches students for a science competition during lunch, then spends a couple of hours cleaning up and preparing for the next day. “When you have seven grade levels that gets tricky—electric cars in fourth grade, shade structures in kindergarten—you have to find somewhere to put it all!” WHERE SHE’LL BE: On the weekends you may find Kathy and her family at Del Mar Pizza, enjoying a New York-style slice and some salad with 1-year-old boxer mix Indiana in tow. THE LADY’S LEGACY: “In the lab, students are constantly communicating and collaborating and trying to solve problems. It helps to set them up to be strong, kind, empathetic people who can solve problems and work through things.”

Last year, she was named to Zagat National’s “30 Under 30” list. All in the Timing

SEP 5 – 30, 2018

APR 10 – MAY 5, 2019

The beloved smash hit of the London and Broadway stages conjures its way to North Coast Rep for a spirited and hilarious evening in Noël Coward’s BLITHE SPIRIT. A socialite novelist, an eccentric medium, an unforgiving ex-wife and a shrewish spouse create supernatural hijinks in this world-class comedy. You are summoned for an otherworldly evening of theatre overflowing with wit, sophistication and effervescent fun.

Wit, intellect, satire and just plain fun! Off Broadway’s hit, ALL IN THE TIMING is a sextet of one-act comedies by playwright David Ives, which uses inspired language and word play to examine various attempts at relationships and communication with comical results. It will push your smart buttons and tease your brain as Ives spins hilarity out of words. Join us for laughter and an experience that will tickle your heart.

Holmes & Watson

A Walk in the Woods

OCT 17 – NOV 11, 2018

MAY 29 – JUN 23, 2019

Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has conceived a masterful scenario in which three men claim to be the missing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is called upon to do some sleuthing. Prepare yourself for a fast-paced, thrilling, suspenseful story that will keep you guessing. This West Coast premiere is a very worthy addition to the Sherlock Holmes canon and will challenge the most astute mystery buff.

With world tensions escalating, Lee Blessing’s play, A WALK IN THE WOODS, is especially relevant today. Set in the midst of the Cold War, a U.S. and Soviet arms negotiator agree to meet informally. Their revealing and absorbing conversations, laced with humor, evolve through debate and discord, exploring unexpected and uncharted territory. For those yearning for a more enlightened world, this play gives us much to think about.

Del Mar Lifestyle | May 2018

ALEXUS WILLSON PERFORMS AT VARIOUS SHOWS AT BOTH THE DEL MAR FAIRGROUNDS AND PARK, AND SINCE 2016, HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY DR. TARKAN SIDAL, the owner of Torrey Pines Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Del Mar/Carmel Valley. It’s his “giving back” that has been essential to the riding success that Alexus continues to see. “Her devotion to the sport reminds me of the rigorous training that I went through early in my career,” Sidal says. “In a sense, we both work hard to reach our goals. Therefore, I’m pleased to be able to contribute to her success.” DEL MAR LIFESTYLE: You’ve been riding since the tender age of 5, and have been showing for the last 10 years. Any words of wisdom for young girls that are starting to ride? ALEXUS WILLSON: It’s to never take this sport for granted, and appreciate the opportunities you’re given. Also, never blame your mistakes on your horse, and, even if you have a bad ride, kiss your horse goodbye. DML: How did you even start riding? AW: My mom is a horse trainer and got me into riding. DML: That’s really cool. Do you remember your first show? AW: It was when I was 8-years-old, and it was at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. DML: How do you prepare for a show? AW: Getting ready for a show consists of chaos. It’s a lot of packing and then me realizing that I always forget at least one thing. DML: I know many athletes have superstitions. Do you have any? AW: My one superstition is that if I’m super nice to my competition, I always lose. DML: During a competition what goes through your mind? AW: I just focus on riding my horse to the best of my ability. DML: It definitely seems like that focus has paid off. Your track record is quite impressive. DML: Over the years how has riding made an impact on other parts of your life? AW: Through riding, I’ve met some of the most amazing people. It’s crazy how your inspiration can become one of your close friends, and I love that. DML: Your favorite thing about riding is? AW: I get to bond with my horses and the friends I’ve made along the way. DML: What’s your favorite memory throughout the years of riding? AW: My favorite memory so far is from 2017. I had worked so hard all year long to win a certain class, and when I got to the finals, I actually didn’t have a horse to ride. The horse I chose to ride had never done anything like this and was still fairly new to me. When I stepped foot into that ring, I thought to myself “I won’t win, but I’ll try to.” The next thing I know, I’m being called back for a work off, and I was in second place. After the work off I stood in the line just waiting. The moment I heard that I won I broke into tears. Everything that I’ve been working for had paid off, and I won a GSDHJA (Greater San Diego Hunter Jumper Association) 3-feet medal. DML: Long-term/short-term goals? AW: My long-term goal is to become an “A” show trainer. A shortterm goal is to qualify and win the junior hunter finals. DML: What’s next on the horizon for you? AW: I’m graduating this June, and I plan to get a business degree. torreypinesoms.com May 2018 | Del Mar Lifestyle
