Welcome Home... HOME -

MARCH 2017

our cherished space. We begin and end each day here.

W

hen you think of home, what comes to mind? Family, favorite meals, endless conversation with friends, celebrating our amazing community or just relaxing in the comfort of your space while enjoying a world-class sunset…I'd like to share with you some thoughts on what home spells out for me in my heart and mind. HEART -

Home may be where you rest your head but it is the heart of our being. It's not a place but a state of mind. Love, security, comfort, connection and community…it's where it all begins! OPTIMISM -

Your attitude sets the tone for your energy, your intention and your future. It begins at home and spreads to those you love and care for most. Our community has a bright future and every one of us influences that. MOMENTS -

Life is all about the journey and not the destination. Cherish each moment at home and make it count. Create long-lasting memories with near and dear. After all, isn’t that what builds a home!

ENERGY - Many believe in the concept of Feng Shui and how energy influences our lives.

We all influence each other and the flow of energy in a positive manner, especially at home, has an enormous impact on our lives.

Del Mar and Carmel Valley, we'd love to hear and see some of your positive moments and memories at home. Share your stories with us on our social media channels below. And thank you, for inviting our magazine into your homes every month. See you around town!

or many in San Diego County, The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation is known for  providing scholarships to deserving San Diego youth so they may continue to pursue their educational interests. The organization was named for Don Diego, aka Tom Hernandez, who served as the Fair’s welcoming goodwill ambassador from 1947-1984. To date since its inception in 1986, the Foundation has awarded approximately $797,000 in scholarships to 177 students and in agriculture education grants.  This year,  The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation  will offer a record total of a whopping $65,000 in 2017 college scholarships to 27 outstanding students who reside in San Diego County and have participated in the San Diego County Fair and/or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This 2017 program of substantially increased monetary awards and recipients marks a major expansion for Don Diego, which began in 1986, providing $1,000 scholarships to three students. In 2016, 12 students shared a total of $40,500 in scholarships.

“...a triumph of theatrical style” — NEW YORK TIMES

“…inventive, sparky, amusing. Makes for a lively evening” — DAILYMAIL.COM

The deadline to apply is March 20, 2017. Finalist interviews will take place in May. Recipients will be honored at the exclusive Don Diego Gala to be held during the 2017 San Diego County Fair. Each recipient also will receive a personalized Legacy Brick to be installed at the Don Diego Legacy Brick Fountain at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Depending upon the category in which a student applies (one category per student), eligibility is open to high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college; in one category, also to students currently enrolled in college. Scholarships of $5,000, $2,500, $1,500 (new!) and $1,000 will be awarded in each of four categories: 4-H, FFA, Employee and Exhibitor/Participant. The $10,000 in FFA scholarships is provided through the generosity of the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation. The $10,000 in Exhibitor/Participant scholarships is provided through the generosity of the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation. Two 2,500 Vocational Education scholarships will be awarded to students who intend to pursue a vocational education curriculum at a community college or accredited trade school, with the goal of obtaining an AA/AS degree or certificate. New this year, the Foundation will administer what is now known as the Don Diego Junior Livestock scholarships for participants in the Fair’s junior livestock auction. One $5,000, one $2,500, one $1,500 and six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. The coveted $5,000 Spanjian Family Scholarship honoring the “father” of Don Diego, Bob Spanjian, will be awarded to the single most outstanding of all 27 applicants. For categories other than Employee, applicants must be high school seniors graduating in Spring 2017. New this year, applicants in the Employee category may also be currently enrolled in college. This change accommodates Fairgrounds employers who often prefer to hire employees who are at least 18 years of age. Remember, the deadline to apply is March 20, 2017. Finalist interviews will take place in May!  Full eligibility requirements and applications are at

Chronicle of a Del Mar Beach House ARTICLE RUKSANA HUSSAIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED ocal author Juliana Maxey-Allison has penned Edelweiss: Chronicle of a Del Mar Beach House 1885 to Now, the intriguing history of a Victorian beach cottage that you’ve probably crossed driving or walking around our coastal city. The book reveals the backstory and characters that make this century-old house interesting and worth preserving, as it combines local history and memoir with tips on researching and revitalizing a vintage home. MaxeyAllison invites you on a little journey to the past exploring the history of the home she lovingly restored in the 1970s. Edelweiss is only one of three remaining original Del Mar homes and that will soon become just two. One is the Alvarado House (mentioned on page 38 in the book and shown on page 47), which currently resides at the Fairgrounds in the care of the Del Mar Historical Society. The other is the first house that Del Mar founder Jacob Taylor lived in, which might have been a telegraph office later but not considered ‘original’ since it was renovated along the way. It is now festooned with pink flags, indicating plans to tear it down. “The yellow ‘Dunham house’ is also of the early era on 10th Street. It is a block to the west. So far it has been sold a few times and not yet torn down. There were pink flags to dig a basement, but nothing has happened for a year,” says the author. Mining her own family archives, unearthing old real estate records and relating what she found to what was going on in the wider world at the time, Maxey-Allison has put together a captivating tale of Edelweiss and its people, from pioneers to celebrities. The story begins with the author’s first look at the Del Mar house in 1972, then doubles back to the origin of the cottage in 1885 and works forward from there. In the early 1880s, Jacob Taylor, Del Mar’s first real estate developer, envisioned and built an extravagant tourist destination. This house at 227 10th Street was part of his dream made manifest. The author encountered the sagging, slouching, peeling “old Victorian beach cottage” almost a century later and couldn’t resist it. The house has stayed within the same footprint and has the same number of rooms as when she found it in 1972. It now functions with three bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen, and three bathrooms — two where closets used to be.  22

Current residents - the author and her husband

"Everyone who comes into the house wants to know at least a little about its history. I heard bits of gossip and juicy rumors , and I had collected printed in formation from clips of stories published in newspapers . I thought I should find out for myself what the real story of the house was . It turned out to be such an interesting story, not only of the house , but of the life and times of Del Mar , that I wanted to put it down in a book . I won dered who had lived in it before . "

hen designing a space, Molly O’Neil of Drop Cloth Interiors considers not only the space and the client’s

objectives, but what furniture, artwork and textiles the homeowner has that will tell a story. This serves as inspiration for a design but it also lends a warmth and history that off-the-shelf pieces often cannot convey, adding personality to a space and creating comfortability that her clients love.

24

Del Mar Lifestyle | March 2017

For this space, the homeowner’s antiques, heirlooms and artwork were all incorporated into the design aesthetic throughout the home. Custom pieces were also brought in to bring the entire space together.   The heart of the home, the living room exudes comfort and elegance. The sofa, pillows and side chairs are all custom creations from Drop Cloth Interiors.   The understated fireplace is framed in Ann Sacks penny tile and artwork painted by the homeowner’s grandfather adds personality.

WRITING NOOK The writing nook is one of the homeowner’s favorite places in the house; the antique writing table is where her grandmother would write love letters to her grandfather and the Lladro figure topped the couple’s wedding cake.

DEN The Den has an established feeling about it, a place where introspection, whiskey and cigars mingle with the antique table and ginger jar lamp. The artwork is a framed San Diego nautical chart and the custom arm chair lends a bit of whimsy to the space.

Of course, mattresses and bedding are personal preferences as there is not a one-size-fits-all theory here. Your aesthetic may be modern and minimalist or traditional and comfortable, and fundamentals aside, you will always gravitate toward what you love. Quality linens and pillows in neutral colors will outlast any color or design trend. Definitely take your time when selecting bedding, but splurge for something that will make you happy. Save Time And Money

MAKE HI-FI HOME AUDIO A PART OF YOUR LIFE

Audio solutions professionals have a trained ear and are experts on audio equipment, both within and without the range of products they represent. They can help you avoid wasting time and money on an audio system that has features that you do not need or does not particularly suit the types of music that you enjoy most.

{TO WORK WITH A HOME AUDIO SPECIALIST}

J

oshua W. Turney and his fiancée, Victoria Vulaj, are the co-founders and proprietors of Deja Vu Audio West. Turney has over 20 years of experience creating and listening to high-end audio systems. He holds a B.A. in Music from Tufts University and has an ongoing, lifelong love affair with jazz. Vulaj is a lifelong classical music lover and oversees business operations and logistics for Deja Vu Audio West. Their showroom and listening rooms are located in La Jolla Village, where they specialize in creating the most musically satisfying experience possible for clients' homes and offices.   DejaVuAudioWest.com

Professional Assessment There are so many choices available when it comes to music reproduction in the home or office. Whether you are a seasoned audiophile or a novice, selecting the right audio equipment can be a daunting and frustrating experience. Qualified and experienced audio solutions professionals can help you figure out what is important to you, sonically and aesthetically, and then offer several solutions that fit those priorities.

Exclusive Resources Audio solutions experts frequently have access to a caliber of music reproduction equipment and accessories that clients simply would never be aware of were they to shop on their own. They have extensive contacts within the high-end audio industry, are members of audiophile societies, and frequently attend industry events in order to stay abreast of new technologies, and to continue to be able to offer the best solution from all available options.

Trusted Advisor It is always about the music. An audio solutions expert should educate your ear to the point where you can discern the differences in sound among various audio components. A great audio boutique should further your knowledge about the music you

already know and love as well as help you discover and appreciate music you've never really explored. And then guide you through the experience of appreciating how various pieces of equipment impact the sound of your music. You will know the right sound for you when you hear it.

The Wow Factor If it’s a job well done then high-end audio experts should literally have their clients losing sleep because the audio system assembled for them has them awake at 3 a.m. rediscovering their favorite music. The audio system should also be a point of pride in your home, something where you say “wow, that looks beautiful and sounds simply amazing”.   36

The status quo, lapped again. A near seven-decade disdain for the expected continues with the new Panamera. Redesigned inside and out, it breathes new life into classic Porsche design cues.
