COMMUNITY! Whether they be fathers, brothers, grandfathers, sons or friends, we all have men who mean so much to us. This month we introduce you to four men who, although they followed different career paths, all say the same thing: They love living in Cypress! And they share some advice and life lessons learned along the way. And of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16—see our gift guide on page 35 where we share some unique dream experiences that take the Dad's Day gift to another level. There are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, baseball games, camping trips, fishing excursions and so much more. From stories about dude food and beer to classic cars and tough workout routines, we have something to interest all our gents!

ARTIST’S PALETTE

“I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE BEER AS AN ART, BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DEVOTE A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT. THEY TAKE YEARS TO PERFECT THIS CRAFT.”

THE ART OF BEER BEER PHOTOGRAPHER MAKES SPLASH IN CRAFT BREW SCENE ARTICLE ERICA HERNANDEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY JOSH OLALDE

18

Cypress Lifestyle | June 2019

IT’S HARD TO SEE ONE OF JOSH OLALDE’S BEER PHOTOS AND NOT BE AROUSED. Some of his best-known works—chaotic portraits of beer foaming, spewing or being splashed into wet pint glasses—look like carefully crafted accidents turned high art. “People are mesmerized,” Josh says. “But it also causes discomfort because ... seeing an expensive beer getting spilled like that—it’s like 'Dude, what are you doing?' It’s outrageous!” And that reaction is what keeps him going. Josh, a self-proclaimed "beertographer," elevates  food photography to a whole new realm. He documents his best work on Instagram. While most photographers might capture a neatly poured brew in a chilled glass, Josh takes pride in staging action-packed craft beer scenes that reflect a brewsky's true personality. On one shoot, he suspended a beer can from the ceiling while squirting beer at it. The result? The beer, Defying Gravity Double IPA from Houston-based Bakfish Brewing, appears to levitate. Josh hopes his efforts encourage people to try local craft brews and view beer as more than just a drink.  "I want people to see beer as an art," Josh says. "Because a lot of people devote a lot of time and effort. They take years to perfect this craft." JoshOlalde.com | Instagram: @josh_olade

LIFE LESSONS (CON TI N U ED)

T i t l e/ Br e w m a s t er C o m pa n y/ K l a u s Br e w ing C o m pa n y WHAT’S THE GREATEST LIFE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED? So far, the greatest life lesson I've learned is to be patient but vigilant when trying to attain your goals. I believe you can't rush the natural progression of how events will be played out and how progress toward your goals will be accomplished. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG PERSON WHO WANTS TO ENTER YOUR INDUSTRY? The advice I would give is to enter a formal beer education program that includes internships. If possible, intern or volunteer before making that leap because most don't understand the amount of work that goes into running a brewery, and that it's not as glorious as they may have thought. TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS? I attribute my success in business to past experience, especially learning from failures. Also, and probably more importantly, is who I surround myself with and the support of those around me. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? I define success as achieving goals while maintaining balance. Success isn't a goal; it's a journey of wins outweighing losses. 10142 Jones Road, Houston 713.498.5004, KlausBrewing.com 26

MURDOCH’S TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH ITS LATEST BURGER AT MURDOCH’S BACKYARD PUB, THE OWNERS ENJOY CREATING CUISINE INSPIRED BY PEOPLE AND PLACES THEY KNOW, SAYS SARAH FRANKE, CHEF AND PART OWNER. The popular Cypress eatery is well-known for its craft beers and creative burger mashups. This month’s burger specialty, The Dizzle, honors Murdoch’s bartender J.D. Houlihan whose appreciation for spicy foods is not for the faint of heart. He enjoys lacing his burger with the restaurant’s outrageously hot Agent Orange Habanero Sauce. “If I’m not sweating and tearing up, it’s not hot enough,” J.D. says. 18541 Mueschke Road, Cypress, 281.516.9753 MurdochsBackyard.com 28

FITNESS DOESN’T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED TO BE EFFECTIVE. This month’s workout routine designed by Cypress CrossFit Club head coach Stephen Bartholomew  seems simple enough. That is until you get going.  “It’s meant for a person who’s looking to get the most bang for their buck,” Stephen says. “But they have the least amount of time.” The routine, which takes about 20 minutes to complete, calls for weighted lunges, pull-ups  and ball slams completed in one-minute intervals.  Stephen recommends men start with a 20- to 30-pound dumbbell for the weighted lunges and a 10-pound slam ball if they’ve never tried CrossFit. Intensity is key. Aim for 10 to 20 repetitions per minute. It's  enough movement to get the heart rate going while still building muscle endurance. Counting your repetitions is optional, but don’t sacrifice good form to complete more reps, he says. As an added challenge, repeat the workout  within a

month to try to get more movements than before.

THREE FAST FITNESS MOVES TO BUILD MUSCLE AND CONDITIONING

THE WORKOUT | FIVE ROUNDS

P U L L- U P Hang from a bar with your hands slightly outside of your shoulders, and pull your chin over the bar. If you cannot do a full pull-up, you can do any version of an assisted pull-up or use a lat pulldown machine.

GOBLET LUNGE Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell tucked under your chin while lunging. Keep your feet straight and your knees over the middle of your foot. Your legs should make a 90-degree angle when at the bottom of the lunge. Perform without weight if needed.

BALL SLAM Pick up a weighted ball off the ground until it’s over your head, then slam it on the ground. Keep your back flat throughout this movement. Use the power in your hips to get the ball up and to slam the ball down.
