NORMALLY, MY MONTHLY MISSIVE IS ON TOPIC FOR THE THEME OF THE ISSUE. Please enjoy what our writers and Tracy, our editor, worked so hard on in order to make this month’s issue interesting and compelling. What I would like to talk to our readers about is how technology is advancing to the point where most of what we see, read and hear may not be real. That’s right….“Fake Everything.” When I go to the gym (the older I get, the more I need to), I read the morning’s news and commentary on my iPhone. I also enjoy articles on topics of interest to me that range from music to science. I just read an article on AI—Artificial Intelligence—that frightened me. A software genius has come up with a way to create human faces that appear 100% real, but they are not real people. Next step is clearly to create faces of real people saying and doing things they did not actually do. Seems like a potential Social Media Force 5 Hurricane of false information on a global level. Talk about Fake News! It will make our current Twitter Storms and Russian trolls on Facebook look like a sunny day at the beach. It also makes Photoshopped print images child’s play.

A NG E LU S BL O C K C O . PAVING THE WAY TO BEAUTIFUL HARDSCAPES FOR DECADES

SINCE 1946 WHEN ANGELUS BLOCK CO., INC. OPENED ITS DOORS IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD, BUILDING INDUSTRY PROS HAVE COUNTED ON ANGELUS FOR AN ARRAY OF CONCRETE BLOCK AND PAVER PRODUCTS. A manufacturer of concrete blocks, concrete paving stones and decorative retaining wall blocks for municipal, commercial and residential projects, Angelus services, sells and distributes to contractors and dealer networks throughout Southern California. Architects, landscape architects, engineers, building materials dealers, contractors and homeowners appreciate Angelus’ winning combination of quality, service, large range of stocked product and ability to rapidly deliver those products. Angelus Paving Stones Sales Manager Tom Murphy took some time out of his busy schedule to discuss the paver market, trends and more.

Q: WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT CONCRETE PAVERS? A: In addition to serving as an attractive enhancement to your hardscape, concrete pavers are low maintenance, long-lasting and high quality. The compressive strength of concrete pavers is 8,000 psi, much higher than typical asphalt or poured concrete driveways. The life cycle of a properly installed concrete driveway can be 30 years or more. Another advantage is that in the event the property owner needs to repair or replace underground utilities like a sewer line or water main, in many cases the pavers can be removed, set aside and then reset over newly compacted base and bedding sand. The result is a seamless repair to the pavement.   Q: WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN THE PAVER MARKET? A: People seem to really like large format pavers like our Paseo and Pavilion pavers for patio and pool decks. The other trend we’re seeing are linear and plank-style pavers like our Aqualina and Timberline.  The combination of a wood plank look with the low-maintenance and longevity of concrete pavers has been a real plus for our customers.

SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY PROVIDES R ELIEF FOR WILDFIRE VICTIMS

A NONPROFIT SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY IS HELPING WILDFIRE VICTIMS OF THE HILL AND WOOLSEY FIRES FIND COMFORT AND HOPE BY PROVIDING USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE LONG-TERM RECOVERY PROCESS. Lutheran Social Services of Southern California began their housing counseling program in March 2018 to provide case management on an individualized basis. The housing counseling program is qualified through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is part of the agency’s 50 different programs and services to assist community needs. Ben Garcia, senior director for the LSSSC housing counseling program, began the service to ensure that displaced fire victims can make the appropriate decision for their housing needs. To date, the LSSSC housing counseling program at the Thousand Oaks location has assisted about 100 people affected by the Hill and Woolsey fires. ”LSSSC’s mission is to embrace, equip and to empower our communities through the power of education,” says Garcia. “Because of this, we strive to be the source of change we wish to see in our communities.” Garcia says wildfire victims can utilize LSSSC’s services in two different ways. The first is through the free housing counseling department, where a team of five HUD-certified counselors sit with different victims for hour-long sessions, during which they call the lender to inquire about specific fire relief programs available for the area in which the residence burnt down.

26

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | April 2019

“Some lenders were automatically giving clients three months’ forbearance where they wouldn’t have to make three months of payments, or some lenders were offering to help modify and lower their payments,” says Garcia. Counselors also assist the victims by speaking with their insurance companies. “The counselor explains what programs the lender is offering and if it does or doesn’t benefit them,” says Garcia. “Basically, any housing needs that would go hand-in-hand with them being victims we would work with.” Additional counseling sessions are also provided for 30 minutes. “It depends on their needs,” says Garcia. “You also do not have to be a Lutheran to use our services; you can be of any denomination.” The second service LSSSC provides wildfire victims is through the Disaster Relief Program by offering $50 gift cards to buy groceries, gas or other necessities the person may have. All proceeds were donated through the LSSSC website. “If it’s a family of four, we’ll offer an additional $50 gift card,” says Garcia. Megan Hutchinson and her husband, Nick, were referred to LSSSC through Conejo Cares, a Christian church community organization, after Hutchinson’s parents lost their mobile home in Seminole Springs during the Woolsey Fire last November. Megan and Nick, along with their newborn baby boy, River, were living in a rented spare room, while their grandmother lived in the guest house. “We didn’t have renter’s insurance and all of our possessions were lost,” says Megan. “It’s all out of pocket to replace the items.” The couple grabbed baby supplies and reptile pets and evacuated at about 10 p.m. the night the fire started. The next day, Megan learned the mobile home had been destroyed. “I thought it was a preemptive measure [to evacuate], but I had a feeling that the house would not be there,” Megan recalls. “When the Kanan winds picked up, it was the perfect storm for a fire.” Currently, the Hutchinsons and family members are living together in a rented house in Newbury Park until the property can be rebuilt in Seminole Springs. The family is thankful for the gift card from LSSSC and For more information about Lutheran Social Services of Southern California or to donate to the California Fire Relief Appeal,

The family-owned business’ dedication to quality and service has fueled the company’s growth for the past 70+ years, catapulting it to become the largest dry cast concrete manufacturing capacity facility in California. Servicing, selling and distributing to contractors and dealer networks throughout Southern California, Angelus stocks a wide range of products, including the popular Paseo and Pavilion large format pavers for patio and pool decks, as well as plank-style Aqualina and Timberline pavers. Many customers find the wood plank look and the low maintenance and longevity of concrete pavers to be a winning combination. The low-maintenance, long-lasting high quality of concrete pavers make them an even more attractive hardscape enhancement. Homeowners are often surprised to learn that a properly installed concrete paver driveway can last 30 years or more and offers an additional advantage of seamless repair in case underground utilities need to be accessed. exhibit portrays artist's evolution "from dawn to dusk" ARTICLE ALICIA DOYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY HEATHER JAMES FINE ART

36

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | April 2019

Sam Francis: From Dusk to Dawn, on exhibit at Heather James Fine Art in Palm Desert through April 29, is a great opportunity to see Francis’ evolution as an artist, as it comprises 28 paintings and works on paper, spanning from 1955 to 1994. This exhibit, which includes works from the Sam Francis Foundation, features 18 paintings completed shortly before the artist’s death in 1994, placed alongside more than 20 seminal works from 1955 through 1986. The exhibition chronicles how Francis’ lifelong dedication to exploring the many different ways color, space and light can convey emotion and meaning advanced the standing of abstract painting—both here and abroad. Here, Debra Burchett-Lere, executive director and president of the Sam Francis Foundation, provides more details about this exhibit—and what makes it so unique. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A WHIRLING SQUARE?  A Whirling Square, 1975 (222 x 210 inches), the featured painting in the exhibition, is one of the larger matrix/mandala paintings offering the viewer an expanded area of the white space within the colorful mandala form— the space that Francis said "would catch the little essences of infinity that go floating by.” The white space, contrary to what one may ask, is not white empty space, but a space that is "full of possibilities." For Francis, these white areas were built up layer by layer as white encompassed all colors. He felt that these areas of white could not be filled up—they represented infinity that exists outside of time. Francis was a vessel of something greater—intrigued about the nature of the cosmos, the relationships and paradoxes between all things, and the creative chaos fundamental to the universe. He believed that the essential nature of the universe is creative—dynamic, forever in process, and an infinity of relationships. His intuitions and feelings charged as colorful ideas and physical paintings. For him, his dreams and meanings were manifested also visually as images of form and color—the painting became the physical form of his thoughts. The intensity and physicality of  A Whirling Square—its visceral power engages the viewer with feeling and intuition. The square form feels as if it is moving across the sky—it is in motion, not contained within the boundaries of the canvas. Like matter and energy exploding with color; a combination of the psychic and emotional power. His search for the sublime within this world of chaos was always part of his painterly process. In this, one can feel a sense of unity and contradiction represented by the squaring of the circle of the mandala. Francis’ paintings express the transformative power of the four elements: earth, water, air and fire. Fire as bursts of color; air as the space in which fire emerges—water as the flow of forms that allows color area to intermingle—all elements are united by color ultimately derived from the Earth. This painting also illustrates in many ways the artist’s ability to explore extreme scale without sacrificing the intensity of imagery—both on a minute scale (i.e., 2 x 1-inch canvases to large-scale works of 40 feet).

James Johnson Sweeney, former director of the Guggenheim Museum, wrote that Francis was “the most sensuous and sensitive American painter of his generation.” William C. Agee, curator of the Francis retrospective in 1999 at MOCA/LA, wrote that  "Francis is a rare artist participating in the visionary reconstruction of art history—his art broke with the past and charted new territory … Francis

SEASON,

MANY ARE SEEKING WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT IN AN EFFORT TO LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST. At Vibrance Medical Group, which offers the innovative SHAPE Weight Loss Program, “We are a

little different than the typical medical model,” says Dr. Darren FX Clair, Medical Director at Vibrance, who has helped thousands of patients improve and maintain their overall health and vitality for more than two decades. “We are about using all the tools we are born with, which we have acquired

through millions of years of evolution, to optimize our health as the first choice in terms of dealing with any condition, rather than turning to medications or procedures first,” he says. To that end, the SHAPE Weight Loss Program involves no risky drugs or surgery— rather, just small doses of specially formulated hCG, which is a natural hormone. This comes in the form of a shot or drops that can be placed under the tongue. “The way we help people lose weight, specifically body fat, is through hCG, which helps people burn fat,” Dr. Clair explains. “The diet works fantastic; they’re not hungry, they’re not tired, so they see good results.” SHAPE is an acronym for Safe, Healthy, Advanced, Permanent and Effective. The SHAPE Weight Loss Program works in alignment with a diet of very nutritious, fat-fighting foods, which means zero pre-packaged foods or drinks that you must depend upon for maintenance—making it more realistic for the long-term. More specifically, the diet integrates B12 therapy, a Paleo-type diet that helps eliminate food allergies that can cause weight gain with nutritious foods that constitute the basis of a very healthy lifestyle. “It does not include food substitutes or processed foods that lack nutrition; it does not contain additives or preservatives that do not foster healthy eating habits,” Dr. Clair explains. “It also does not include appetite suppressants that can have severe side effects to your health and may lead to nutritional deficiencies.” In other benefits, Dr. Clair believes it is very important to identify the reasons for your weight gain and any underlying medical causes for being overweight to ensure lasting results. For instance, based on each individual’s history, patients may undergo innovative testing for hormone imbalances, sleep disorders and stress factors that may make healthy weight maintenance difficult. “We hold people very accountable,” Dr. Clair emphasizes. “We have them come in every week to monitor their progress, because the accountability is very important.” The program also keeps the weight off permanently by resetting your metabolism, and because it’s supervised by a Medical Doctor, people will see results regardless of pre-existing conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. In the end, those on the program lose unwanted fat—not muscle—and

Your One-Stop Shop for Appliances ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN

ORIGINATING IN 1981 AS A 2,000-SQUARE-FOOT APPLIANCE SHOWROOM CALLED WAREHOUSE DISCOUNT CENTER IN AGOURA HILLS, THE FAMILY-OWNED WDC KITCHEN & BATH CENTER NOW OPERATES FIVE LUXURIOUS SHOWROOMS THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, FEATURING KITCHEN APPLIANCES, OUTDOOR BARBEQUES, PLUMBING FIXTURES AND MOST RECENTLY, MATTRESSES. Currently managed by the second generation of family members committed to upholding their inherited values of providing customers the best price, qual-

&

ity and overall experience, WDC Kitchen & Bath Center strives to evolve and improve in their efforts to meet customers’ needs, desires and expectations. “While the retail landscape changes every single day, WDC is focused on adapting and innovating to meet the new expectations of our clients,” says Sales Rep Tracy Williams. “We are constantly working to achieve a

Customer Experience that is nothing short of exceptional.” With a commitment to superior customer service, WDC’s experienced, friendly and knowledgeable staff members take the time to truly listen to customers, treating them with the utmost respect and providing expert guidance throughout the buying experience. “We believe in hiring professionals and training them into experts!” says Williams. “Our entire staff is vigorously trained by manufacturer professionals to ensure that we remain a valuable resource to our customers throughout their new build or remodel,” she adds. When shopping for appliances, customers can find a wide range of options and friendly staff ready to assist at WDC Kitchen & Bath Center. Q: WHAT APPLIANCES CAN CUSTOMERS FIND AT WDC? A: We carry all types of major appliances—outdoor appliances (grills, etc.), plumbing fixtures and fittings—in a wide range of brands and prices from entry level to luxury.

C e n t e r

Q: ARE WDC'S PRICES COMPETITIVE? A: Absolutely! We are known to be a low-cost leader and have a price match guarantee in the rare event that our prices are not comparable or lower. Q: WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR CUSTOMERS TO KNOW WHEN PURCHASING APPLIANCES? A: Having spent 25 years in kitchen and bath design, I would say two things are super important that are not about brand or quality: + Appliance and plumbing fixture selection should be one of the first things a consumer does when planning a remodel or build, even before the house design is finalized. This assures that their chosen appliances and major plumbing fixtures will fit in the design. Waiting until the design is done may limit their options. + Lifestyles change … as do the way we cook and use our kitchen. It is important for consumers to be aware of the innovations in the appliance world as they begin sorting out what products will best serve their lifestyle today and over the next 15-20 years. Many products help us to cook faster, better and healthier while making our daily cooking and entertaining easier. CONTINUED >

Q: WHAT TYPE OF WARRANTY SHOULD A CUSTOMER LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING AN APPLIANCE? A: Although the industry standard for years on most appliances has been one year, many manufacturers offer longer warranties. In some cases, longer warranties are offered as a promotion when purchasing a certain number of pieces or by having appliances installed by a Certified Installer (including WDC’s installers). Q: ARE EXTENDED WARRANTIES WORTH THE EXTRA COST? A: Today most appliances have technologically advanced electronics on board, which make our lives easier and more efficient, however, as we all know, when the electronics have an issue, they are expensive to repair. For that reason, extended warranties are more important than ever. Q: WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE RATHER THAN REPAIR MAJOR APPLIANCES, LIKE THE DISHWASHER OR WASHING MACHINE? A: The real answer is, “it depends.” Our staff is very highly trained and can help a consumer make that determination. Some things to consider are: + Age: The average life of most brands is about 12 years (Miele and Sub Zero are the exception with longer life expectancies). If the product is nearing the end of its life, replacement might make more sense. + Efficiency: Old refrigerators may be real energy hogs. Purchasing a newer, energy-efficient product may actually save more in electricity than the cost of the new appliance! + Innovation: New appliances include features that make life easier and more efficient. Q: WHAT SETS WDC APART? A: As part of their relationship-building with customers, WDC strives to educate customers before, during and after a sale to ensure that customers feel comfortable with their purchase even after installation. WDC hosts informational cooking demonstrations, bringing appliance manufacturers and WDC customers

Her projects have ranged from set design for Clorox and Wesson Oil commercials to high-end residential redesigns. She has created interiors for hospitals, dental and optometrists’ offices, apartment building lobbies and design houses. Whatever the project, Gould is confident her clients will be content with the outcome. “At the end of the job, you’re going to love me—I love what I do and I have a passion for what I do,” says Gould—who also won a designer’s challenge on HGTV. A self-proclaimed workhorse, Gould also teaches Design and Construction at Conejo Valley Adult School, providing instruction on how to design and remodel kitchens and bathrooms, and wrote a DIY book, Eye on Design. Whether it’s adding a wall, remodeling, retrofitting homes for seniors, designing and staging a home or building from scratch, Eileen Gould Design & Construction is ready to ensure a smooth and enjoyable process from beginning to end. Also certified in photovoltaics and ADA requirements, Gould and her team oversee each and every detail, saving clients time, worry and money. “You can rest easy knowing that your project will be executed in a timely manner and with the utmost integrity and respect for your privacy,” says Gould, who especially enjoys working with clients to fulfill their dreams. “We never do the same design twice,” says Gould, who finds inspiration in nature, travelling, reading and the ocean. A yogi who likes to journal and meditate, Gould also holds an MBA from Goldman-Sachs. “There’s not many of me out there—I’m sort of an anomaly.”

PARTING THOUGHTS After my mom passed away, I went through her ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS

home, clearing and donating everything that my mom cherished—it took me an entire year. This was one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had to do, knowing what it meant to her. Things I couldn’t part with, I brought home to cherish, although at that time I made sure I decided that if I was going to bring it, I had to part with something of mine. It’s been three years and now it feels cluttered again, so I am once again going through it. As life changes for all of us, our wants and needs change too. I now want to have less clutter and have a very simple home and make it as easy to take care of as possible. I am learning this in every part of my life, to simplify our home and our lives as we declutter in all areas. Take a moment to look around—don’t overwhelm yourself, just open one drawer or one door; as the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” If your life has become overwhelming or it just feels full, please take a moment to declutter. My friends, it’s been an amazing feeling, and I’m not all the way done, but that’s just it. I do a different section when I have time and if it’s just a bit of time, I just block out that much time only. Think of it like building your dream home one section at a time. You’ll be glad you did!!

Kim Pagano is brought to you by the award-winMY HOME HAS SEVERAL MEANINGS TO ME—IT’S WHERE I GATHERED WITH MY FAMILY AND WAS ABLE TO LOVE ON THEM, WHERE WE INVITED ALL OUR FRIENDS THAT WE CONNECTED WITH THROUGH OUR KIDS, SCHOOL, WORK AND ANYONE WE WANTED TO INCLUDE IN OUR LOVING HOME. As the saying goes, my home was truly my castle, filled with lots of loving memories of holidays and parties. My parents did a lot of entertaining, so maybe it was learned, but it was something that came easy to me; we also have an entertaining home. As for today, most of our kids have moved out and now our house has a different feeling and I have started to look at what that means to me. What do I really need and what still has sentimental value to me or any of my family? It seems like the younger generation is not interested in keeping family collected treasures. So what do you do with all your treasures that have been handed down or collected? Many of you have heard of the show, “Marie Kondo: The Magic of Decluttering.” She suggests only keeping what brings you joy. This is a great way to decipher what to keep and what to gift to someone else. I have been doing this for the past year. 58
