could really use a helping hand—we’ve all been there at one time or another. Fortunately, whatever we need, be it a friendly smile, financial assistance or help with our children, the resources in our local communities are there for the asking. From cancer support groups and housing agencies to youth organizations and senior programs, nonprofits staffed by selfless individuals aim to help those in need in so many ways. If you’re wondering how you can get involved, you’ve come to the right place, as this month of Thanksgiving and harvest provide the perfect time to lend a hand and give back to others. indeed privileged to have so many opportunities to help—“Sharing Gratitude: 5 Ways to Give Back to the Community” (p. 56) offers some suggestions. This month includes countless good causes to get involved with, making it easy to find the perfect way to give back: • Do you like glitzy handbags and sparkly jewelry? Attend Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County’s Bags, Bling & Bubbly champagne luncheon (Nov. 5). • Soup, salad and dessert please your palate? There’s Many Mansion’s Bowls of Hope event (Nov. 4). • Dinner and gifts? The Westlake Village Junior Women's Club Annual Gingerbread Boutique (Nov. 8) has got you covered! • Enjoy viewing festively decorated homes? Check out the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara’s Holiday Homes Tour and Holiday Boutique (Dec 1-2). • Like wine? The Third Annual Conejo Uncorked Wine & Food Festival (Nov. 2) is a must. • Cycling enthusiast? Participate in the 10th Annual Mike Nosco Memorial Bike Ride (Nov. 3). However you choose to give back, monthly columnist financial whiz Jeff Runyan reminds us (“Attitude & Gratitude,” p. 62), “It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35)—and there’s still time to make a charitable donation before year’s end! BLACK FRIDAY FEAST DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, FAMILIES ARE OFTEN TORN IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO WHICH THANKSGIVING, HANUKKAH OR CHRISTMAS DINNER TO ATTEND. The bigger the family, the more varied the options. Robin and I came up with a solution for Thanksgiving—go wherever you choose on Thanksgiving, but everyone comes to us the next day for a "Non-Turkey Experience." Our Black Friday Feast features roast beef with Wine Merchants sauce, twice-baked potatoes, asparagus sautéed in olive oil and pancetta, a salad made with field greens and tomatoes (keep it simple), plus plenty of desserts the guests can bring and lots of good quality red wine (Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot) and some whites as an aperitif as well. For appetizers, anything “non-Thanksgiving” goes well; think brie, gouda, cornichons, Irish cheddar, olives. For 8 to 10 people, a full-sized and trimmed 8- to 10-pound Top Sirloin roast should do it. This cut is tasty, reasonably priced and roasts up very tender. Last year I found a great discount at Gelson’s for a Prime-graded roast. Choice will also be very good. Buy it at least three days in advance and dry rub it (use your choice of dry rub, but make sure you include Kosher salt). Leave it uncovered in the fridge until about an hour before roasting. This will dry age and tenderize it. Preheat to 450 and roast at that temp for 10 minutes, then cut back to 325 to slow roast for about 20-25 minutes per pound for medium rare (145), plus a few medium outside slices for those who do not know any better. Remember, the roast continues to cook after it is removed from the oven, so let it sit for a while. Get ready for the ravenous hordes! Wine Merchants sauce is easy to prepare. Use beef stock, red wine, mushrooms, a shallot and olive oil or butter. Steam the asparagus al dente, sauté with cooked down crispy pancetta and some olive oil. Twice-baked potatoes are also easy…. bake ‘em, mash with butter and sour cream, chives and a little Half & Half. Restuff, top with shredded cheddar and reheat. Clearly this meal is not for veggie/vegan/non-gluten food fanciers or dieters. That’s okay—more for me! Bon appetit! November 2018 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

ADVANTAGEPLUSCAREGIVERS.COM HAS ALWAYS STRIVED TO BE ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN HOME CARE TO PROVIDE THE BEST SERVICES TO CLIENTS.
Their “concierge” style services provide the most personalization, including a Geriatric Care Manager to oversee the case. The new “buzzword” in the home health care industry, “transitional care,” refers to transitioning patients from a hospital, nursing home or rehab facility to their own home in a way that bridges the gap between stages of recovery and aims to prevent often prevalent hospital readmissions. AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com is now leading the way to assist the acute world in reducing readmissions, taking a comprehensive approach to patients’ total care experience that includes post-pro-
cedure private duty in-home care as part of the discharge process. According to a recent article published at Healio.com, readmission rates were found to be an ineffective measure of a hospital’s quality because they did not account for readmissions from different hospitals. The article notes that using only same-hospital readmissions to calculate penalties resulted in 20 of the studied hospitals receiving unwarranted penalties. It’s not just about hospitals being penalized because of readmissions, but hospitals being penalized with high readmission rates due to patients not following procedures and follow up after they return home. ADVANTAGEPLUSCAREGIVERS TO THE RESCUE With its proprietary but simple transitional process, AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com helps a patient transition home comfortably with all the tools necessary to avoid readmission. Use of this program and trained caregivers at the time of discharge has shown great results in patient compliance with hospital/facility instructions and follow-through. Streamlined care plans and proper hospital discharge preparation, inclusive of family members in the home, are crucial for the prevention of multiple hospitalizations. AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com, a state-licensed Home Care Organization, offers a hospital-to-home transition program specifically designed to make the transition smooth for better outcomes and that is customized to meet the individual needs of each patient. A Transitional Care Manager (LVN/LPN or higher) will drive the patient safely back to the comfort of their home or provide for their safe transportation, as well as make sure they fulfill their discharge orders, in addition to educating patients and family caregivers in the home about medications and self-directed care, including follow-up appointments with their medical providers. They will perform a home safety and aids check to prepare the home in advance of the discharge and ensure that all needed supplies and equipment are in place. This program will have a tremendous impact on the health and quality of life of the patient post-hospitalization and ultimately reduce their chances of a readmission within 30 days. AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com provides private duty in-home custodial care services for adults, specializing in geriatric care, rehab and workers’ comp. PASO ROBLES: T H E U LT I M A T E W I N E COUNTRY ROAD TRIP ARTICLE BEN MALKIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
» The Paso Robles AVA was established in 1983 with 17 wineries FOR THOSE OF US LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE ROAD TRIPS WE CAN TAKE IS A WINERY TOUR OF THE EASILY ACCESSIBLE PASO ROBLES AVA. We came home with a wonderful supply of wine for the holidays. I always drink red wine with Thanksgiving turkey and my famous Black Friday Roast Beef. Read on and discover that Paso is ground zero for world class red wine. For white wine lovers, the Rhone varietal whites are interesting and delicious alternatives to the usual Chardonnay. A visit to Paso Robles has as much to offer as the more famous Napa Valley. It is also less crowded, less expensive and more casual.
and 5,000 vineyard acres. Today it has grown to 200+ wineries and 40,000 vineyard acres. » The wineries are 95% family owned. The visits are more personal and the owner and/or winemaker is often there to greet you. » World class wine with a strong focus on reds dominate. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc (Bordeaux), Syrah/Grenache/ Mourvedre (Rhone) and of course, Zinfandel, the region’s heritage wine grape variety, lead the pack. There are also whites, like Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne and other Rhone whites that when blended and served well chilled can convert you from Chardonnay. » Wineries throughout the Paso Robles AVA regularly achieve 90+ ratings from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker. Our friends in Paso do not take a backseat to Napa or Sonoma. » Scenic day trips to visit winery tasting rooms on winding roads that are far less crowded and busy than those in the Napa Valley is a big part of the charm. » The square in downtown Paso is at the center of things when you visit, but it is really much lower key and also far less expensive than Napa and Sonoma. » The third weekend in May features the annual Paso Robles Wine Festival, one of the largest outdoor wine festivals in California, with four days of events and a Grand Tasting.

Gary & Marcy Eberle
MAKING ALLIANCES We connected with Chris Taranto from the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance and he set us up with visits to some of the best wineries in the AVA. Chris is a great guy to know for all things Paso. Through him, we met several owners and renewed our friendship with my fellow Penn State alum Gary Eberle, the founder and “Pioneer” of the Paso Robles wine region. Wine country hospitality is famous for its genuine warmth and this visit once again confirmed it. We were welcomed at each stop with wine, food and a detailed and passionate description of what makes each winery unique. So where to start?
EBERLE WINE ESTATES 3810 CA-46, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.238.9607 | EberleWinery.com This was a most enjoyable visit with the guy who started it all, Gary Eberle. We rolled into Eberle Wine Estates at 10 a.m. I told Robin that chances were that when Gary got started kibitzing and sharing his library of wines and warm hospitality that we may be there for hours… we Halter Ranch
were. Gary is the ultimate raconteur. The delightful visit was capped off by lunch with Gary and Marcy Eberle, along with a magnum of his wonderful Reserve Cabernet. It made for a memorable experience. While premium Cabernet Sauvignon is Gary’s passion (and his is the best), you can enjoy a full range of varietals, all of which are affordably priced and excellent.
HALTER RANCH VINEYARD 8910 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA
93446805.226.9455 | HalterRanch.com Several years ago there was a charming covered bridge on the property and an older building. They now have a modern building that houses a gracious tasting room. Ashley Bratton guided us through their state-of-theart production facility and then treated us to a tasting of their Ancestor Cabernet (named after an ancient Live Oak on the property) and CDP, a classic Rhone-style GSM blend. Were we in Bordeaux or the Rhone? Who cares? Delicious!

DAOU VINEYARDS AND WINERY 2777 Hidden Mountain Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.226.5460 | DaouVineyards.com
Daou Vineyards
The most beautiful and dramatic winery in Paso Robles sits on Daou Mountain and is surrounded by their vineyards. The wine matches the beauty and the drama. Visit, stay a while, enjoy. Katherine Daou was our gracious host for what was an incredible flight of their premium wines…. all 90+’ers. The focus is on Cabernet Sauvignon either by itself or blended Bordeaux style. Our favorites included the Eye of the Falcon, a blend of Cab and Petit Verdot, and their 2015 Daou Estate Soul of a Lion, a blend of Cab, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot—dramatic names and even more dramatic wines. This is a family winery. Two brothers, George and Daniel Daou, started out in the Old World in Lebanon; in the New World they realized their childhood dream—making a testament to the timeless bonds of love and family.
ECLUSE WINES
1520 Kiler Canyon Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.238.4999 | EcluseWines.com We first discovered Ecluse Wines several years ago when we drove up a windy out of the way road. They are as good as we remembered. Still small-scale, laid back and ready to spontaneously offer us a barrel tasting of wine still in progress. The 2015 Ensemble, a Bordeaux blend, and their 2015 Rendition, a Rhone GSM blend, were outstanding. Small wonder that they received 92 and 93’s from Robert Parker.

KILER RIDGE OLIVE FARM
1111 Kiler Canyon Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.400.1439 | KilerRidge.com As we departed Ecluse Wines we came across this charming and ultimately delicious olive farm. Stated quite simply, there is so-called Extra Virgin olive oil you buy in the supermarket and there is the "real deal” that you can buy at the farm or online from Kiler Ridge. Kiler Ridge Olive Farm is a 58-acre family farm in the coastal hills of central California, just minutes from downtown Paso Robles. The central coast climate and chalky soil are ideal for olives. They use sustainable farming practices and currently maintain 2,700 olive trees, with varieties originating from Italy and Sicily. Our host Marcia Tayor graciously treated us to a tasting of several varieties. Different olives produce distinctly different tasting oils from smooth and buttery to spicy and fruity. Our favorite was Lucca Extra Virgin Olive Oil, produced from Lucca variety olives. It is a buttery, medium intensity olive

oil with fruity aromatics that hint of green tea and a black pepper finish. It is deliciously creamy—a perfect butter replacement. Mange, mange.
NINER WINE ESTATES
2400 CA-46, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.239.2233 | NinerWine.com Their very attractive and modern tasting room is right off the 101 on Hwy 46 as you enter the Westside. Their Fog Catcher is a Bordeaux blend (the 2014 was predominantly Cab Franc and has been one of our favorite wines for years). They offer a broad selection of excellent varietals at reasonable prices. Niner is also as well known for their fine dining as their wine. Their restaurant was recognized by Food & Wine Magazine as one of the best winery restaurants in America. Our lunch was worth 5 stars and the setting was beautiful. Another day in wine country…lovin’ it!

Close Solène
CLOSE SOLÈNE WINERY
2040 Niderer Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.239.7769 | ClosSolene.com Clos Solène is the most charming family winery in Paso; it is the very definition of boutique. It is also a “Love Story,” the result of “un coup de foudre”—a bolt of lightning—when Guillaume Fabre met Solène. They came to Paso Robles from France and started their own winery. The result is magic. Their estate vineyard is right outside the front Close Solène
door, dotted with small tables to enjoy wine that Bacchus would enjoy. Several wines received 95 scores from Wine Advocate for Rhone blends named after Guillaume’s wife and three children. My favorite is the 2015 Harmonie blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.
TABLAS CREEK VINEYARD
9339 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.237.1231 | TablasCreek.com Tablas Creek is the realization of the combined efforts of two of the international wine community’s leading families: the Perrin family, proprietors of Château de Beaucastel, and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands. Together they were the pioneers of bringing the Rhone to California. To ensure that the vines at Tablas Creek were of the highest quality and same genetic source of those at Beaucastel, the partners imported vinifera from their French estate that allows Tablas Creek to replicate the clonal selection of an established French vineyard. This passion lives on with our host Jason Haas, who educated us on their heritage and unique terroir. We have been visiting Tablas Creek for many years and over time the wine has never failed to be great. What is really amazing are two of their signature blends, Patelin de Tablas, which earns 90+ scores and can be found at retail for under $20, and its big brother, Esprit de Tablas that comes in at 95+ for under $65. These are premium Rhone blends that are simply world class. 38

JUSTIN VINEYARDS & WINERY
11680 Chimney Rock Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 805.238.6932 | JustinWine.com Justin may be the best known premium winery in the Paso Robles AVA. They certainly earned it with their Isosceles and Justification Bordeaux blends. Their Isoceles Reserves have been ranked among the best wines in the world. We stayed on the property at their Just Inn and enjoyed a spectacular Chef’s Wine Pairing dinner at The Restaurant at Justin. The 2014 Isosceles Reserve paired with a CAB Short Rib was sublime. Executive Chef Paul Arangorin and Grillardin Timothy Barakat outdid themselves. The next day Sommelier Jim Gerakaris treated us to a wine flight and a golf cart tour of the winery and the estate vineyards. All of this is worth the drive all the way out to Chimney Rock. Justin also announced the opening of a new tasting room in the heart of downtown Paso Robles on the Square at 811 12th Street. Every detail of the new space was artfully curated and customized—from the “infinity” New Justin Downtown Tasting Room

architect Antoni Gaudí in the early 20th century. They also offer fine dining to go with the wine. Ready to go? Please take me with you!

PROSTATE CANCER UPDATE
(CON TI N U ED)
“THE KEY FOR PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER IS TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THEIR UROLOGIST AND UNDERSTAND THEIR CONDITION AND ALL AVAILABLE TREATMENT OPTIONS,” DR. NIKKHOU SAYS. Q. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER MEN WITH PROSTATE CANCER? Advances in minimally invasive surgery and radiation have enhanced the treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer with lower morbidity and complications, Dr. Nikkhou notes. “Prostate cancer is now a potentially curable condition. More advanced or metastatic prostate cancer can be treated with hormone suppression or chemotherapy to improve overall survival,” he says. Coping with a diagnosis of cancer can be difficult, Dr. Nikkhou adds. “Support groups can be a wonderful resource where patients can share stories, treatments and advice on management of this condition,” he recommends. Q. WHEN IT COMES TO PROSTATE CANCER, WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE? Men over 50 years of age with normal life expectancy should have annual screening with PSA and rectal exam, Dr. Nikkhou reemphasizes. “Men with significant risk factors should consider earlier screening—any abnormalities in PSA or rectal exam should be evaluated by a urologist,” Dr. Nikkhou advises. The diagnosis of prostate cancer requires long-term treatment and surveillance, he adds. “The key for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer is to feel comfortable with their urologist and understand their condition and all available treatment options,” Dr. Nikkhou says. Dr. Kiavash Nikkhou is located at 415 Rolling Oaks Drive, Suite 260, in Thousand Oaks. For more information, call 805.309.2555; or visit NikkhouMD.com. 42

THOUSAND OAKS FIRESIDE AND DESIGN: OUTDOOR STYLE ARTICLE ALICIA DOYLE
THOUSAND OAKS FIRESIDE AND DESIGN IS A DEPARTURE FROM THE OLD STANDARD “FIREPLACE AND HEARTH SHOP,” WHERE THE EFFORT WAS CONCENTRATED ON WOOD-BURNING FIREPLACES, SCREENS, WOOD HOLDERS AND TOOL SETS. With the onset of many municipalities banning the burning of wood, the hearth industry has adapted to a market filled with realistic and efficient electric and gas-burning units suited to the tastes of today's informed consumer, explains Thomas Malinowski, manager of Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design. “The hearth and fireplace store has to adapt as well, along with the product line,” Malinowski says. At Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design, “you will find all the latest the industry has to offer set in an exquisite showroom designed to excite and tantalize.” The Thousand Oaks location is a full-service showroom selling mid-to high-end gas, electric and wood fireplaces, built-in and standalone barbecues, custom barbecue islands, pre-cast stone mantels and surrounds, gas fire pits, accessories and a full line of mailboxes. “When the Thousand Oaks showroom was being remodeled to open to the public, many passersby stopped to inquire what kind of restaurant or night club was opening,” Malinowski recalls. “They all were surprised when they were told it’s going to be a fireplace and barbecue store.” With the popularity of the Thousand Oaks location, owned by

Community Cupboard was established by Cal Lutheran’s Campus Ministry in 2012 when an undergraduate student became a single mother and was struggling to buy food after covering her miscellaneous expenses. “Community Cupboard was created to fill in a gap that prevents our students from focusing on their studies, to help find their purpose and achieve the best of their abilities,” says Elizabeth Lohr-Myers, administrative assistant for Cal Lutheran’s Campus Ministry. Lohr-Myers says several dozen students utilize the cupboard on a regular basis, which can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “The lounge has an exterior door that

FINANCIAL BUZZ
ATTITUDE & GRATITUDE ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN
AS WE APPROACH THE CLOSE OF ANOTHER YEAR, WE CAN ENJOY THE RETURNS EARNED IN THE STOCK, BOND, AND REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. And, while having more wealth accumulated now than ever before is comforting, it is equally, if not more rewarding to use your increased economic power to help others. The holiday season is a perfect opportunity to reflect and give to others, and believe it or not, the reward one experiences in helping others is more gratifying than to be receiving. 62

jointly to $24,000 will reduce the number of households that benefit from itemizing their returns compared to previous years. The shift from itemized to standard deductions is important because your charitable deductions reduce your taxable income when itemizing your tax return. For example, if you have less than $24,000 in itemized deductions including state and local property taxes (now capped at $10,000), mortgage interest expense, and all other categories, then you may consider “bunching” your charitable giving so that two or three years of planned gifts are donated in one year to secure the benefit of itemizing your return. Another benefit to be mindful of when gifting to your favorite charities this holiday season is if you are age 70.5 or older, you can take your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA and elect a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A Qualified Charitable Distribution is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA whereby you have the distribution paid directly from your IRA to a qualified charity. If you’re planning to make a

PARTING THOUGHTS
the more you give thanks, the more you get to be thankful for ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
THIS MONTH, I’M SHARING MY PERSONAL GRATITUDE LIST. It starts with my two amazing parents who brought me into this world with excitement and passion. I’m most grateful that they were not only my parents, but that they were also my best friends—I was able to talk to them about anything. They taught me the meaning of life and love and integrity. I’m grateful for having had a relationship with my grandparents. I’m thankful for all my mom’s and grandma’s recipes that still bring me right back to those great childhood times. As I look back at where I grew up and my childhood memories and friends, I’m so very grateful for all of those experiences and memories. I recall driving without seatbelts, staying out until the street lights came on, respecting my teachers and principals, loving school and wanting to get good grades. I’m thankful that my parents bought me a car when I turned 16 because they thought I deserved it, not because I was entitled or to keep up with the neighbors. I’m grateful that I learned that time and timing is everything. I learned to grab life and all there is to experience. I’m thankful for my husband and for the experiences we've shared as a couple—and that we are still happy together after all these years! I’m most grateful for our incredible children and for being their mom—they are my life! As they form their own beautiful families, I’m grateful for the friendships with my children and their spouses. I watch the seeds that we planted grow and blossom. I’m beyond grateful for our grandchildren; they are another beautiful gift, along with the relationships we are forging with them every day. I’m grateful that I have the ability to make things look beautiful and for having a vision for beauty. I never realized that was a gift that was handed down to me. My hair therapy and my decorating impact my daily life, turning anything into beauty. I celebrate all my beautiful friendships and the infinite knowledge I’ve learned from hosting my radio show. I’m thankful that I have a sense about people and getting to know them. I’m grateful that I have a loving home and that my neighbors have been extended family. And, of course, for our pets and their unconditional love and our garden that yields our golden nuggets. These are all things that I am personally grateful for. Taking a moment to write down the things that you are grateful for and that have made a difference in your life may well lead to a journey down memory lane that will cause you to give thanks about the many things in your life for which you are grateful.
