Lifestyle Letter

Here’s To Our Lady

T

his month we will again be celebrating the 4th of July, the birthday of our nation’s founding. Frankly, I do not see it as a happy birthday. The discourse between everyday people all the way up to our country’s so-called leaders is more toxic than at any time in my lifetime. I include the Vietnam War era in that assessment. There may not be mass protests, but what lies just beneath the surface is perhaps even more divisive. The Memorial Day tribute to our fallen armed services men and women in May and the 4th of July celebration should be opportunities to come together and find common ground. In politics, there seems to be a complete lack of interest in the kind of compromise that has kept a functional, albeit imperfect government moving forward for 241 years. On a personal, one-on-one level with friends, acquaintances and even family, there is more of a lack of respect for others’ feelings and opinions than I can ever remember. In order to avoid conflict, the conversations often turn neutral. Keep the peace and accomplish nothing. This letter is one person’s request for tolerance and respect for one another… family, friends, acquaintances and strangers too. Not just opinions. How about cultural and racial differences? I would like to finish this plea by quoting the most famous and inspiring part of Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, “New Colossus.” It is, of course, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.

A Life Care Plan addresses questions like: • How do I assure my financial security as I age? • What kinds of insurance do I need? • Should I buy long-term care insurance? • How and when should I distribute my assets? • Do I have to spend all of my money on my care? • How can I protect my assets for my spouse, my care or my children? • How do I provide for family members with special needs? • Am I entitled to any public benefits? • What health care services are available? • How will financial and health care decisions be made if I cannot make them?

clients wish to avoid nursing homes at all costs, and if that is at all possible given their financial and medical circumstances, then “anti-nursing home planning” is the focus. Q. WHAT IS THE LAW FIRM’S ROLE IN CREATING A LIFE CARE PLAN?

A. Our firm provides assistance with the legal, financial and care-related challenges elders face. Our in-house Elder Care Coordinator has a Master of Social Work degree and experience in the health care field and supports families whose elderly loved ones are at home, in assisted living, board and care homes or skilled nursing facilities. She coordinates needed care and available community services, serves as the elder’s advocate, and involves the firm’s attorneys when their advocacy is needed. She lightens the load for family caregivers and helps improve the elder’s quality of life. “With a background in hospice, families often said to me that they wished I had been around for the last five years of their loved one’s life, and not just the last few weeks or months. Working at a Life Care Planning law firm allows me to get involved early on for those families who think ahead,” says Katie Wiltfong, the firm’s mental challenges and to ensuring the caregiver spouse or child

BONNIE BOWDEN

“Professional singing has been my lifetime passion,” says Bonnie Bowden, who started singing at age 3. “I have sung all my life,” she says, naming greats Doris Day, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Jackie Wilson, Brenda Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Pitney and Sarah Vaughn with inspiring her love of music. While none of her family members sang or played instruments, music played a big part in Bonnie’s childhood. “My parents loved music. The radio was on all day every day,” she recalls. “When I was 3 years old, my parents discovered I was memorizing every song I heard and singing along with Pop, Rock ‘n Roll, Broadway, Classical and Jazz. I would gladly put on an impromptu show for anyone who would listen… anywhere… anytime… whether it be in our living room for my parents’ friends, or in a department store or in a restaurant for complete strangers,” laughs Bonnie, who regularly sings in the Conejo Valley, with two upcoming performances scheduled for next month: • Friday, August 11, 7 p.m. in Westlake Village (WLV.org/index.aspx?NID=228) • Sunday, August 27, at Gardens of the World (GardensoftheWorld.info). Bonnie describes her love of singing by quoting one of her idols, Ella Fitzgerald: “The only thing better than singing is… more singing!” Bonnie adds, “When I’m singing, I go to another world. I’m up in the clouds and it feels too marvelous for words.” Bonnie is especially proud of her debut performance of Doris Day’s hits at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert earlier this year. Arranged and composed by the late Jonathan Charles, the movie hits were adapted to big band orchestra charts especially for Bonnie. “He made it possible for my debut to portray Doris,” says Bonnie. “Little did I know those arrangements would be Jonathan’s last work. He passed suddenly in December 2016. I will be eternally grateful to Jonathan, his wife Maureen and his best friend Ken Gruberman for their kindness and generosity.” Bonnie believes anything is possible, as Walt Disney said: “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." She tells aspiring musicians that success is found in passion. “To be a survivor in this crazy business of music, one must love performing above all else.” Connect with Bonnie at BonnieBowden.com. LOCAL LADIES (CON TI N U ED)

“I always sang. It gave me joy, emotional release and escape,” says Lola Haag, who sang everything from church hymns to the great WWII era classics, from Elvis' rockabilly to Dean Martin's crooning and Barbra Streisand's soaring soprano. “No singer, male or female, was safe from me belting along with them. I was especially interested in lyrics and their meaning, as much as I am today. I just loved to sing and I loved language, so I wanted to be an English teacher,” says Lola. While her public singing career began in church, singing "Oh Holy Night" on Christmas Eve at age 14, Lola decided to become a wife and mom, earning a Master’s degree in Science and becoming a licensed psychotherapist before returning to the stage as an adult. “I was still itching to perform,”

she

recalls,

and she began acting in theater productions, from Anna in " The King & I" to Mama Rose in "Gypsy" and dozens more. “But I longed to step out from behind the characters I played and perform as myself in Jazz,” she says. Today, Lola holds the title “Best Jazz Vocalist in Ventura County” by the Ventura County Music Awards for the past two years and was recently nominated for a third year as “Best Jazz Vocalist” and “Best Female Entertainer” for 2017. Her seven bestselling Jazz albums have received worldwide acclaim and are played in more than 75 countries! Lola & The Back-Beats perform regularly, entertaining crowds with her unique blend of Blues, Jazz, Contemporary and timeless classics, “reminiscent of the classy days of the nightclubs of a bygone era,” says the Los Angeles Times. Catch Lola next month at Bogie’s on Tuesday, August 8, 7:30 p.m. and online at LolaHaag.com.

LOLA HAAG

Growing up in a family of musicians, Daniela Spagnolo learned to love music at a young age. “There was always music in

my

house—musicians

coming over to rehearse and Italian music on the radio,” says Daniela, whose father sang and played guitar as part of “The Strolling Troubadors.” “I fell in love with beautiful melodies!” When she was 7, her parents bought a piano

and Daniela discovered a passion that would lead into her college years. “As soon as my fingers touched the keys, I was taken into a world that I knew I never wanted to leave,” recalls Daniela. “I began taking piano lessons, and that continued into college where I got in as a piano major, then switched to voice.” Daniela also credits her high school teachers at East High School in Rochester, New York, with helping shape her musical career. “I've been extremely lucky in having been educated and mentored by some of the most brilliant and loving people I have ever met,” she says, recalling her music teacher, Ed Fleming, “a father figure and friend” who taught her “not to settle for mediocrity.” Her drama teacher, Marty May, piano teacher Caroline Norwood and bass player/trombonist Lester Bass all played big parts in Daniela’s life. Seeing Ella Fitzgerald’s performance at the Newport Jazz Festival inspired Daniela’s love of Jazz. “I had never heard Jazz that way before; the way she expressed it. She was vulnerable, humble, joyful and sang with her entire being,” remembers Daniela. “She gave everything away! After seeing and hearing her, I began to pursue Jazz and have never stopped.” Enjoying the freedom that comes with being a musician, Daniela performs Jazz throughout the Conejo Valley, recently performing at Bogie’s in Westlake Village. Proud of her “Daniela Sings” CD, considered for a Grammy for best vocal album, she humbly identifies with Albert Einstein: "I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." She advises others interested in pursuing a musical career to be true to themselves. “Believe in yourself, you are one of a kind!” she encourages, adding, “Trust that your authenticity has incredible value!” Find Daniela’s upcoming performances at Daniela-Sings.com. Financial Buzz

THAT SETTLES IT:

“T+2” is coming. What is it? And what does it mean for you?

T

ypically, there are two dates associated with the purchase or sale of a stock, bond or mutual fund:

• Trade date • Settlement date. Trade date is pretty simple. That’s the date your trade took

place. But what is settlement date? It’s similar in concept to “the close of escrow” in a real estate transaction. Let’s say that on June 15, you signed documents to buy a home. You then have until the close of escrow, say, 30 days later on July 15, to do things like inspecting the home and getting your mortgage completed. At the close of escrow, the transaction “settles” and the home’s deed is exchanged for the

sold is exchanged for the agreed-upon trade price.

The same “settlement period” is needed in securities transactions—just not as long. On settlement day, the security that was When I first started in the investment business in the late 70s, settlement took five business days. So, after trade date, the seller had five business days to get the security that had just been sold in “good delivery form” while the buyer had five business days to get the funds in. We called that “T+5.” But understand, that’s when stocks and bonds were issued in certificate form. Paper! Which meant getting that paper to the buyer—duly endorsed by the seller—took a little time. And many times the certificates were not held in the client’s account—they were sitting in the client’s safe-deposit-box or under the mattress. In 1995, after paper certificates had been pretty much replaced by electronic delivery, the SEC initiated T+3. Still, at that time, the money coming from the buyer was still mostly paid by check. Again, paper. Now, with banking mostly paperless, the SEC will be moving the industry to T+2 on September 5. How does this impact you? If you’re like most of my clients, the impact is minimal. For buyers, we already have your cash on hand, so shortening settlement by a day means nothing. And for sellers, we already have the position we’re selling in your account, so we’re okay there, too.  The biggest change that T+2 will bring is to those clients who call us to raise cash to pay for that new car or to take that cruise. You’ll get your money one day quicker! So, after T+2 goes into effect in September, if you call us on a Monday while the market is still open (before 1 p.m. Pacific time), we can have funds available on Wednesday. And for most of you, that means the cash will be sitting in your bank account on Thursday. Robert A. In 1979, community members of Thousand Oaks came together in response to the housing crisis plaguing their neighbors, especially those who were becoming homeless or being forced to live in overcrowded, run-down, and crime-ridden housing. These individuals represented a wide segment of Thousand Oaks, including the faith community, social services agencies, businesses, local government and concerned citizens. Their initial efforts led to the establishment of Many Mansions in Ventura County, which owns and operates 500 units in 14 affordable housing complexes in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Oxnard. Additionally, Many Mansions manages 205 units in seven properties on behalf of the Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Piru and Fillmore. “Many Mansions is a nonprofit affordable housing and service provider,” says Rick Schroeder, of Oak Park, president of the organization. “As the need for affordable housing grows, we will continue to expand both in Ventura County and in Los Angeles County.” Many Mansions develops affordable housing by renovating old run-down apartment buildings

The Supportive & Adult Services program, which operates in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Oxnard, offers case management, food assistance and life skills workshops. “Last year, our Supportive & Adult Services program served almost 200 individuals and families,” Schroeder says. Children Services provide youth residents a range of offerings, including an afterschool program, a seven-week summer camp, Friday enrichment programs and volunteer opportunities. Children Services also helps coordinate two large donation distribution drives during the year: holiday gifts for low-income families in December and backpacks full of grade-appropriate school supplies in August. “Last year, our Children Services programs and donation drives served over 400 youth,” Schroeder says. At full capacity, Many Mansions’ currently serves more than 1,200 residents, including 300 children. A LASTING IMPACT

“Our housing turnover is quite low, demonstrating the true need of affordable housing in our community,” Schroeder says. “While the economy has recovered from the 2008 recession, indicators for the health of our county’s housing and income stability remain bleak.” In the past 38 years that Many Mansions has helped thousands of families, many are able to break the generational poverty their family experienced, and eventually move into market rate units or purchase homes of their own. “This is wonderful, but it is not enough,” Schroeder says. “Our waitlist has close to 2,000 households on it and continues to grow.” While the positive impact of Many Mansions is vast, the nonprofit wouldn’t be possible without support, especially from volunteers, donors and grantors. “We also rely on the community generosity for in-kind donations—camp supplies, food, furniture—to

both support our residents in need and to support our onsite programs,” Schroeder says. “Our biggest current need is for financial support of our programs, which are entirely supported by grants and donations. We can only expand if our donations expand as well.” LEND A HAND

Before people support Many Mansions, Schroeder suggests they familiarize themselves with the organization. “Awareness is necessary for us to continue to grow and thrive,” Schroeder says. “Community support for our mission is what enables us to successfully build more housing and to expand services to new areas. So, come get to know us. Take a tour of our properties and let us show you the reality of what we do for the community.” Above all: “Many Mansions’ vision is to contribute to a compassionate caring community where there is safe, decent, affordable housing for all so that everyone may realize their potential.” The next fundraiser for Many Mansions, called “Bowls of Hope,” takes place November 5 at California Lutheran University.
