Poolside View I’M NOT ALWAYS TOO KEEN ABOUT 4 A.M. WAKE UP CALLS, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO WAKING UP FOR A PHOTO SHOOT WITH SIX INSPIRING FEMALES, WELL, THAT’S A DIFFERENT STORY. Enter: the feature shoot at Taxi Community’s pink container pool. I first came across the Flora Fauna zine through Instagram (naturally) and was hooked. It was a platform taking a fresh take on Denver. It’s not all mountains and beer here, there’s a lot of that, but there’s so much more. Founder and Editor-inChief Carlee Henderson of Flora Fauna has taken that notion and is running with it. Instead of just admiring from afar I went to the spring ‘Nature in Flux’ zine release party at Fort Greene. Call it a networking event, and you’d be wrong. It was a party, a celebration of creatives joining forces and refocusing what the Mile High City is all about. From there, it was a fast chain reaction of collaboration, inspiration and a new network that brought us to that 4 a.m. shoot. The idea? Let’s meet Flora Fauna,

If there’s an underlying theme for all of the stories this month, it’s this: put down your phone and enjoy as much time as possible in the real world. WALKER FINE ART GALLERY PRESENTS "A CONSCIOUS SURRENDER" OPENING RECEPTION An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, 5-9 pm at the gallery in the Prado building on 11th & Cherokee Streets in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District.  The reception is free and open to the public, and the artists will be in attendance.  A conscious surrender may appear as an anomaly, however in certain forms of art, especially of the abstract nature, the notion is almost necessity.   To genuinely surrender opens up a dialogue with the blank canvas; allowing colors, forms & meandering lines to take the place of thoughts, a wordless narrative creates a visual dance. This group exhibition displays artists who

WHILE LIVING IN A BUSY, BUSTLING URBAN SETTING CAN BE TRICKY, NAY IMPOSSIBLE. But for this stunning property within Cherry Creek’s luxe Polo Club neighborhood, the beauty of its natural surroundings spills into the home from each and every angle. “This home is embedded in its natural landscape and was designed to create a unique relationship between the indoor and the outdoor spaces,” says Josh Behr, the property’s listing broker with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. “The resulting experience is unparalleled to anything else I’ve seen in Denver.”

Purposeful in all its design elements, from its open concept floor plan to its minute details (the original structure’s blueprints from the 1960s adorn the home as wallpaper in the powder bath), the home was created collaboratively between the homeowners with the help of Denver’s Nest Architectural Design and Boa Construction. Modern, minimalist and contemporary in its design, the home was built with the intent to emphasize its natural surroundings and maintain a simple, clean aesthetic, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living into an inviting, warm, luxurious experience.

Scott Fitzgerald, and Andy Warhol’s notorious Factory where Truman Capote, Mick Jagger, and Salvador Dali flocked to think, dream, and make creative communion.  Today the concept of artist collectives wilts under the sun of social media and digital domination, but the Denver-based ‘girl gang’ FLORA FAUNA is keeping the tradition alive and flourishing.  The female-run, noncommercial, homemade zine released twice yearly is also “a social networking experience,” says Editor-in-Chief Carlee Henderson, who started the zine as a design passion project after interviewing a zine cataloger in a dusty university library.  “FLORA FAUNA is now a social platform safe space for creatives to come together. In a nation that runs on fast-paced, mass-marketed franchised consumerism, I started FLORA FAUNA to capture a slower, thought-produced market that highlights artistic liberation in avant-garde photographers and designers to new perspectives on Denver’s underground art, music, and fashion scene.” We crashed FLORA FAUNA’s sunrise pool affair to meet the badass women who bear the FF badge and hold a rapid-fire Q&A with Henderson.

WHEN RYAN DIGGINS, FOUNDER OF THE RAMBLE HOTEL , FIRST DREAMED UP RINO’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FIRST HOTEL, LODGING ACTUALLY CAME SECOND TO HIS PASSION FOR CONNECTION AND SERVICE. “I wasn’t actually focused on building a hotel; instead, I wanted to create a dynamic community gathering space complemented by a level of all-day hospitality that wasn’t prevalent in Denver at the time,” says Diggins.  It’s safe to say he succeeded. The Ramble takes its inspiration from the French Salons of the 17th century, where community was forged over discussion and sometimes… um, lively (read: rowdy) debate. Situated in the RiNo Arts District, the hotel is designed to be the perfect place to gather and relive a show, gallery, or meal you’ve enjoyed about town — or perhaps within the hotel itself. Death & Co, an award-winning destination in the craft cocktail scene, has partnered with The Ramble to provide drinks, bites and hospitality throughout, marking their first venture from their East Village flagship in New York. The Ramble is also home to Vauxhall, an independent music theater and venue, and Super Mega Bien, a pan-Latin restaurant led by James Beard-nominated Chef Dana Rodriguez.   Though wholly outfitted with everything you could possibly need, the staff at The Ramble would be the first to encourage you to experience all that RiNo has to offer. Don’t miss First Fridays: on the first Friday of every month, neighborhood businesses (including galleries) play host to events like exhibit openings and live music. Up the ante and take advantage of the complimentary eTuk circulator from Drink RiNo, running 5 p.m. - 12 a.m. every First Friday. Hop on and off TheRambleHotel.com  @theramblehotel

at multiple locations throughout the district, visiting studios, breweries, shops and eateries along the way. Afterward, head back to The Ramble — whether to crash in one of their plush, stylish rooms, grab a chair and plan tomorrow’s gallery visit, or simply grab one last mind-blowing drink from the Death & Co bar.

Dog-friendly and outfitted with fire pits and games, the patio is part of the Moxy’s 3,000 square feet of communal space designed for guests to get the maximum amount of fun out of their stay. Stop by for Tasting Tuesdays: every Tuesday from 6 - 8 p.m., get $2 beers from a selected Colorado vendor. Want to take the brew love even further? Moxy and Denver Beer Company have teamed up this summer to offer a special Brew Your Way Into Denver package, designed to offer beer connoisseurs a place to stay while exploring the Mecca of craft breweries: the Mile High City.

Airbnb.com | Historic Riverfront Poor Farm @dramapothecary

If a slower, quieter way of life is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more idyllic than the historic Poor Farm Guesthouse in Salida, Colorado. Owners Shae and Brady of Dram Apothecary were seeking respite from the frenetic pace of the Front Range when they purchased the historic property two years ago. Once a working home for the destitute, the 100-year-old farmhouse has been lovingly brought back to life as an airy, modern space to rest, rejuvenate, and be inspired, all infused with Dram’s natural, holistic approach to life.  “It’s been a place where we could reset and recommit to our dreams, and we hope our guests feel that a bit, too,” says Shae.  Situated along the Arkansas River and neighboring a state wildlife preserve, fishing, hiking and rafting abound. Stunning views of the Collegiate Peaks and an “unbelievable” night sky might tempt you to grab a bottle of wine and soak up the scenery from the privately accessed beach. While nearby Salida has plenty to offer, with shops, restaurants and hot springs, let’s get real: with a guesthouse this heavenly, you may never want to venture out. TAKE A HIKE EXPLORING THREE TRAILS LESS TRAVELED.

ARTICLE BEN WIESE ILLUSTRATIONS SARAH NICHOLSON

EVERYONE LOVES A GOOD SECRET. Be it the hot new speakeasy, an upcoming marriage proposal, or a hidden parking garage downtown, the only thing better than one secret is three. As a way to give outdoor enthusiasts new places to explore, local experts graciously shared their favorite secret spots to hike, bike and climb around the Front Range, and what makes each place unique.

HIKING Heil Valley Ranch - Picture Rock Trail   “It's  not a very used trail. It’s  winding and very beautiful with many trees. It’s a lollipop — hikers go straight up from the trailhead and then hit a loop at the top, which looks like a lollipop on a map — so you can make it what you want. It’s eight miles round-trip, or with the lollipop, you can make it 12 miles The beginning of the hike is open. Going up, it’s mellow switchbacks and eventually Casey Easton

CLIMBING South Saint Vrain Canyon - Monkey Skull “You can have any crag within this 30-mile canyon to yourself anytime, and it’s 30 minutes from Boulder. The best part of the secret is the fact that it’s actually pretty accessible. Nobody goes there. It’s a chopped up area; it isn’t obvious. The crags aren’t all beautiful and paneled —  a few of them are  —  but for the most part, each little crag has less than a dozen routes, and they might be short or carved up a little bit.
