Rest & Relax

JULY 2017 PUBLISHER

“S

ummertime and the livin’ is easy” has been on repeat since the summer solstice. It’s my favorite season (a close competitor is fall), and I’m soaking in every carefree moment. I can’t even keep track of all of the ‘out of the office’ emails I’ve gotten this season, but I’m certainly not complaining. It feels like a real summer break. “Play” is our theme for the month of July. And there are plenty of different ways to get out there and have F-U-N.

We met the newest kid on the Dairy Block, The Maven Hotel, and experienced a mini staycation in this funky, art deco-inspired hotel. We also hit the town for a roundup of our favorite places to dine, see and, of course, play. Even if you’re running errands this July, like that weekly trip to the Farmers Market, it can be made into an exciting adventure. Blogger Dana Wisniewski of Yoga Pants Years created a Farmers Market Scavenger Hunt that will make your little ones not only entertained but interested in eating healthy farm fresh food (We mean it!). Finally, it would be summer without a little gardening. Our focus is Xeriscaping with regionally-adapted plants, native plants and pollinator-friendly plants. Not only will your water bill be cut in half, but you can also enjoy a beautiful garden with minimal upkeep. That means more rest and relaxation these summer months, and we could all use more of that.

REAL ESTATE AGENT JESSICA NORTHROP CREATES HOMES FOR MORE THAN JUST HER CLIENTS THROUGH GIVEBACK HOMES

heets of worn metal, branches and thin tarps make up the walls. The floor — dirt. No cabinets,

couches or closets are in sight. This is the house where the Sanchezes, a family of seven, lived in Nicaragua. This is the house Jessica Northrop helped to replace. Northrop, who’s been a realtor in the Denver area for 22 years, embarked on a journey to Nicaragua with Giveback Homes, where she joined a group of 10 other real estate professionals from around the country. Together, they built a new house from the ground up for the Sanchez family. Last summer, Northrop realized she’d reached a point in her career where she was looking for a way to make her business more socially aware and give back locally and globally. As soon as she heard about Giveback Homes, she knew it was the perfect way to do just that. Giveback Homes, a nationwide organization, brings together real estate pros like Northrop who want to use their businesses to build better lives for families around the globe. Members — including agents, mortgage brokers, interior designers and more — can contribute financially to, say, help create clean water sources or donate time for build days both locally and abroad. After joining the charity network last summer, Northrop decided she wanted to go all in with her involvement: “The first thing I wanted to do was actually go with Giveback Homes on a trip to build a home for a family in need,” she said. That December, she voyaged to Central America to help change the lives of the Sanchez family. “I feel like there is something honest and real about going all in and really seeing the needs of others in person,” Northrop says. Seeing the Sanchezes’ flimsy home was an eye-opening experience. “I found it very rewarding to get my hands dirty, help build the home, and see the happiness it brought to the Sanchez family. When we left them after three days of building their new home, I saw hope in their eyes.” Northrop continues to see that look of joy light up in people’s eyes as she continues to support Giveback Homes here in Denver. In fact, she funded another building project here in Denver this June. But it goes beyond building: For every home sold, Northrop contributes a

portion of the transaction, making each deal that much more purposeful and meaningful, for her and her clients. “When I share my involvement with Giveback Homes with my clients, their eyes light up,” she says. “It is special to be part of helping someone buy or sell a home, but it is a real honor to actual help provide a home to someone in need.” July 2017 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

SUMMER FARMERS MARKET (CON TI N U ED)

FIVE EASY STEPS TO TRANSFORM A FARMERS MARKET TRIP INTO A TREASURE HUNT 1. CREATE YOUR TREASURE HUNTING LIST WITH A KID-FRIENDS RECIPE IN MIND:

Write your list down before you head out. Keep in mind you don’t need to buy all of the items on your list, so don’t let that limit you. 2. ARRIVE EARLY:

I find it far more relaxing to arrive early, to get there before the crowds and while temperatures are still a bit cooler. Without a wall of people, little ones have an easier time seeing everything from strollers or wagons. If the market is less crowded, you can also encourage your kids to talk to the farmers and ask questions. 3. SHOW AND SHARE YOUR ENTHUSIASM:

If you are excited about all of the beautiful, fresh foods, your kids will be too. By turning the trip into a treasure hunt (or even a game of “I spy”), kids will be more engaged and eager to learn. 4. TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT THEIR TREASURES:

Once you have your little ones attention, you can teach them about the treasures. Engage their senses: explain what different foods are, taste samples, let your little one pick out the apples or peaches and feel the different texture. Take your time and let the little ones enjoy the sights and sounds. Teach kids to eat from the rainbow: red strawberries, orange carrots, yellow peppers, etc. Your kids will view healthy foods in a new way. 5. PLAN FOR A PICNIC:

Reward your little ones for a job well done with a post treasure hunt picnic. It’s a fun way to sample some of the healthy treats. Ask your kids what their favorite treasure was and about the best part of their morning. This article was originally on Yoga Pants Years,

The Joy of Planting Sustainably Summer Gardening Tips and Tricks

A

s many of us are in the middle of summer gardening projects, this month we reached out to Luan Akin, Gardening Outreach

Ambassador at Tagawa Gardens, to give us some insight into what to plant and how to maintain a healthy garden. Akin began accumulating her plant expertise in a somewhat unusual way - as the gardening reporter for Channel 4 News. She spent 35 years working in radio and television, mostly at Channel 4, covering news from the helicopter as well as the gardening beat. Eventually, when it was time for a change, Akin applied to Tagawa and essentially created her own job in the process - Garden Outreach Ambassador. She now does different outreach projects for the gardens targeted towards a variety of different demographics from senior citizens to preschoolers. Many Colorado gardeners are becoming increasingly interested in planting native plants or plants that are well-adapted to Colorado’s climate, both for their unique beauty and their environmental benefits. We asked Akin about why planting with native or well-adapted plants is so important, suggestions as far as what to plant, and for professional tips and tricks to keep those plants thriving throughout the season. Here’s what she had to say.

WHY SHOULD WE PLANT NATIVE OR LOCALLY ADAPTED PLANTS?

It’s worth understanding some of the benefits of planting native and regionally adapted plants and considering incorporating them into your garden in whatever way possible, big or small. Colorado is a dry state with challenging soil structures, and both native and locally adapted plants have evolved to thrive in these particular conditions. Planting either native or locally adapted plants means less watering, less fertilizer, fewer soil additives, and healthier plants - overall, less work for the gardener! Planting native plants, however, has an important benefit over regionally adapted plants; native plants best support native pollinators since the two have evolved together over time. While maybe the most well-known bee in Colorado is the honey bee, this bee is actually a European import and not native to the region. Colorado, however, is home to over 950 different types of bees native to the region, most of whom are solitary bees or live in small nests. Many native pollinators only nest in or pollinate native plants, and thus planting natives allows Colorado’s pollinators to thrive.

When we talked to Akin, she provided us with a strong list of native and regionally adapted, pollinator-friendly plants to help those just beginning to think about planting more sustainably get started. For additional information (and to see just how fun and colorful a sustainable garden can be!) visit the Plant Select website at PlantSelect.org. REGIONAL NATIVES (NATIVE TO THIS REGION, NOT NECESSARILY THE FRONT RANGE OR COLORADO)

• Gaillardia • Kannah Creek Buckwheat • Denver Gold Columbine • Bridges Penstemon • Apache Plume • Fern Bush • Serviceberry • Rabbit Brush (also pollinator-friendly) • Redbirds in a Tree • Wild Plum • Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (also pollinator-friendly) • Purple Cone Flower (also pollinator-friendly) • Bee Balm (also pollinator-friendly) • Chocolate Flower (smells just like a Hershey bar in the morning!) REGIONALLY ADAPTED/ POLLINATOR-FRIENDLY

• Cranesbill • Catmint • Moonshine Yarrow • Pincushion Flower • Russian Sage (fairly invasive, so plant in a contained area) • Goldenrod • Pussy Willow (needs a wet spot in your garden) • Blue Mist Spirea

THE JOY OF PLANTING (C ON TI N U ED)

6 TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A THRIVING GARDEN

>>>>>>> 1. For drought-tolerant plants, be careful of “loving them to death.” They do not appreciate rich soil amendments or extra water and fertilizer! After a couple of growing season, most of them thrive on a bit of “tough love.”

>>>>>>> 2. For drought-tolerant plants, deep but less frequent watering is best. This helps them develop a more drought and heat resistant root system.

>>>>>>> 3. If you are trying to attract pollinators, minimize or eliminate the use of pesticides. If you can’t totally eliminate pesticides from your garden, use them when the bees aren’t out and about - shortly after sunrise or shortly before sunset.

>>>>>>> 4. To foster a healthy pollinator population, try to grow plants that will flower at different times during the growing season - spring, mid-summer, and late-summer.

>>>>>>> 5. Grow flowering plants in groups to attract more pollinators. A bigger patch of the same type of flowers offers more “bang for the buck” and will be more attractive.

>>>>>>> 6. Honey bees are especially partial to flowers that are blue, purple, or yellow. White is okay. They can’t “see” red. 34

What started as a small family-owned business over 25 years ago has evolved into the reputable landscape design company that stands today. What’s more impressive, even through the years, Four Elements has stayed true to its grassroots beginnings by eliciting its inspiration from nature’s beauty. Canterberry Crossing is one such example. Designed as a self-maintaining oasis that would evoke the same effortless splendor found in our Rockies, the home was transformed from a 20-year-old rundown lot with a pool to a sophisticated
