A House Versus A Home

A

house is not a home until the interior design is set and the personality of the house is displayed through trinkets, knickknacks and family photos. At least, that’s what I used to think. I learned a lot the past two years after my first homebuyer saga. My boyfriend Michael and I bought our first house last fall, and while we patiently fill the bare walls and spaces slowly (very slowly), it has felt like our home since we first got the keys. Even as an empty shell. With all of the stress, hiccups and tears that went into the process, you bet we’re in love with this little bungalow. We’ve been dreaming and discussing what we will eventually do and change since it’s our blank slate. This home will grow with us and as we tour friends and family around we usually start out by excitingly saying, “One day.” These are the same words, Tye Stockton, Vail’s top-performing real estate agent, would say when he would have guests over in what once was a duplex in Vail. It’s now a modern mansion after years of disciplined saving. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Tye and his wife Brielle as they shared their story about patience and turning a vision into reality. He shared a few expert tips and tricks for anyone looking to buy a second home away in the mountains as well. We also got a design history lesson from Denver-based interior stylist, Anna Smith, who shared a formal introduction to Eero Saarinen's Tulip Tables & Chairs. Perfect timing with spring's imminent arrival. Finally, it's not a complete issue without some mention about food and wine! Check out our newest favorite hot spot Stella on 16th and wine storage tips from local expert Jack TerHar, because, wine not!? Good luck with making your house a home (and spring cleaning).

T

he Front Range is a perfect storm of vacation excitement. From outdoor activities to nightlife, five-star restaurants,

craft breweries, and more, the Boulder Valley and greater Denver areas offer a blend of everything on a vacationer’s wish list. So why not rent out your space while you're out of town? Local business Home Host is a full-service, short-term rental management, and marketing company that expertly navigates the complex rental process on sites like Airbnb and VRBO. Kate Young, a Boulder native, founded Home Host on the tails of a decade-long career in marketing. Young was helping friends and family post and rent their properties when she realized it was a full-time job, one with the potential to help local homeowners make extra income from an asset they already own. “It’s not just about renting your home,” says Young. “It’s about selling the experience of living there.” Today, Home Host’s clients enjoy increased personal revenue with zero stress while guests enjoy all the Colorado lifestyle has to offer. Young’s team takes care of every detail. They stage professional photo shoots to optimize views on rental websites. They manage each listing and coordinate with guests to ensure a seamless arrival and departure, even curating welcome baskets of local goodies unique to the property’s location. They offer personalized concierge services to help visitors take advantage of the local scene. Perhaps most importantly, they prepare and clean each home to ensure homeowners experience all the reward of a short-term rental with none of the hassle or stress. “Clients are constantly amazed at how much Home Host can rent their home for in this high demand Colorado market,” says Young. With the sheer amount of outdoor recreation, concerts, sporting events, and festivals happening yearround, visitors clamor to experience Colorado’s Front Range and are willing to pay top dollar for it. TIPS & TRICKS: HOW TO STYLE YOUR HOME FOR RENTAL

• Embrace the opportunity to refresh your home and look at it as if it’s for the first time.

DENVER SHORT TERM RENTAL FACTS TO BE AWARE OF: • Property must be the owner’s primary residence (for at least half the year). • If you are not the property owner, you can still rent it out as long as you obtain written permission from the landlord or owner.

• Clear the clutter! • Choose accent items that add character • Play with textures and have fun mixing and matching. • Keep the space light and avoid using dark hues. • Use mirrors to visually expand and lighten a room. • Shop smart on a few signature items. • Bold is beautiful, so add a couple of eye-catching items for photos.

• If you have an HOA, check to make sure renting is allowed. • Must obtain a short-term rental license from the City of Denver. • Obtain your Denver Lodger’s tax ID number. • As a couple best practices, check with your insurance carrier to ensure your property is covered, and check your smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, and fire extinguisher, for safety. CALIFORNIA CLOSETS’ NEW DESIGN STUDIO IN CHERRY CREEK TAKES THE FIRST STEPS TOWARD A REVOLUTIONIZED, HYPER-FASHION-FORWARD DESIGN PROCESS. 20

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | March 2017

“C

losets are very much an afterthought when it comes to a home,” says Jill Downing, a lead

design consultant with California Closets’ premier Design Studio in Cherry Creek— the first of its kind for the custom storage company. Traditionally making use of large showrooms to display the organizational abracadabra of its products, California Closets is reinventing design retail by compacting the shop-front space and turning what was once a display into an interactive think lab. “We want clients to feel like a part of the entire process,” adds Downing. She sits at a glass table in the back of the Design Studio and projects before and after closet shots on an expansive white wall. “They open their homes to us because we respect personalization, and are on the cutting edge.” Closets have become the final frontier of home design, having the power of transforming space and the way it’s lived in. “Every year, the corporate office travels to Italy to look for design trends,” says General Manager Troy Mullins. This is before these designs have left the boot and transplanted to the chic high-rises of New York City. “With this method, we were the first to introduce the textured board to the industry, and we continue being the first when it comes to design,” he concludes. As for 2017, experts at the Design Studio say the hottest closet and organizational trends will be: • Box-in-box layering • Chrome and gold • High-gloss finishes with vibrant colors • Standout edge banding • Mix-and-match finishes Fusing deeper-ticking and mix-and-match finishes have become the largest spotlight trend, with California Closets’ latest and exclusive Tesoro Collection bringing it to the fourth dimension. finishes play on rich wood textures, look-alike leather, and classic textile patterns like Herringbone. More important, they were made to interact. Tesoro finishes also have a leg-up on materials like wood or veneers, which can be difficult to size, react poorly to varying climates, and tend to scratch easily. In a word: it’s a difference in durability. The best way to understand the difference is to see it (and feel it). So if your closet isn’t a place where you’d relax and

# D ESIG N D ECO D E D EERO SAARINEN'S TULIP TABLES & CHAIRS

ARTICLE ANNA SMITH, ANNABODE + CO. ILLUSTRATOR NEIL MACKAY

I

n honor of Spring’s imminent arrival, this week’s icon of design is…Eero Saarinen’s Tulip tables and chairs! Crazy name, crazy furniture. This guy is a little confusing, as his daddy-o, Eliel

Saarinen was also a famous designer and director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Saarinen eventually taught as well (I know you must be getting sick of hearing about that place, but I swear–it’s a good name to know!). But I do know you’ve seen his tulip tables, and you probably recognize his chairs as well! So, what’s the story behind these Mod pedestal pieces? Saarinen was born and raised in Finland and emigrated to America with his parents when he was just 13. After studying sculpture as a young man in Paris, he trained as an architect at Yale. Fun fact alert: Saarinen’s buildings and monuments are all around us! Not only did he design the St. Louis Golden Arch, but the TWA terminal at JFK and Dulles International Airport.

24

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | March 2017

Saarinen is credited, along with Eames (and Bertoia–the poor guy always seems to get neglected) with launching and popularizing organic sculptural furniture forms. The Anna Smith, interior stylist Annabode + Co. AnnaBode.com @annabode

tulip chair and tables, first released by Knoll in 1958 just three years before his untimely death from a brain tumor, are easily his most famous design. Said to have been inspired by a street sign, they were formed from an aluminum base and fiberglass shell. Although Saarinen wanted the pieces to be manufactured from a single material, plastic hadn’t yet been developed in 1958 that was strong enough for the design. Plastics had become incredibly popular in furniture design of the 1960s, serving as an antidote to the hard, cold surfaces of Bauhaus modernism. Rather obviously, plastic also lent itself much more easily to organic sculptural forms than, say, tubular steel. And it was cheap. Win, win. Saarinen liked to say that his tulip tables and chairs cleaned up “the slum of legs” that supported basically all tables and chairs. I’d have to say I agree with him–his tulip tables are lovely in their simplicity and clean lines, don’t you think?

Night STELLA'S ON 16TH IS A LITTLE BIT MARKET, BAKERY & RESTAURANT.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KARA DEYOUNG

28

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | March 2017

It all started with a pancake, explains Brian Cohen, co-owner of the new downtown restaurant/marketplace Stella’s on 16th. While traveling in LA, Cohen and his wife, co-owner Dawn “Stella” Cohen, were savoring pancakes at a local breakfast joint when they had a flash of inspiration: They could do the same thing, but bring it home to the heart of Denver. Fast forward a few years, and their idea has blossomed to include far more than just breakfast fare: a restaurant, bar, cafe, deli and marketplace. Visualized as a one-stop shop for its urban patrons, Stella’s greets you with clean, modern lines and a bright, expansive interior. Just steps away from bustling Union Station and smack dab in the center of a thriving business center, Stella’s is equally suited for a quick bite on your lunch break or a long dinner with friends. And if it’s breakfast you’re after, well…remember that pancake?

Grandma Jean’s pancakes ($6), made from Cohen’s own Grandmother’s recipe, certainly live up to expectations: fluffy yet hearty, sweet with just the right amount of salty. Served with butter swirled into an unmistakable “S” and warm, sticky maple syrup, you’ll be tempted to neglect the rest of the menu. Don't give into temptation, however, as their lighter offerings (try the Brûléed Grapefruit, $4) hit all the right notes: sweet, fresh and perfectly paired with a cup of locally roasted Boxcar Coffee. And if you miss breakfast, don’t despair: Stella’s executive chef Thach Tran has you covered at all hours of the day. Lunch? His Lemongrass Chicken Bahn Mi ($11), a generous serving of chicken, aioli and crunchy sweet pickles heaped on a sandwich roll will put your standard lunchbreak sub to shame. If you’re looking for greens, the smoked salmon avocado salad ($14) is pure summer on a plate: cold smoked salmon and avocado over mixed greens, topped with crunchy fried turnips and a sunny citrus dressing. Dinner? We sampled the artisanal meat and cheese board ($20) with local offerings like Broken Shovel Chèvre and Elevation Fennel Pollen Salami. The Grilled NY Strip ($20), perfectly grilled with a merlot demi-glace and colorful carrots, was luxurious but simple. Take note: No matter breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you should definitely finish your meal with one of Stella’s to-die-for macarons— I recommend the cotton candy. Perhaps one of Stella’s most exciting features is still to come: one of the largest outdoor patios in the city, slated to open April 1st. Enjoy a cocktail (or two!) and take in the views Union Station has to offer. Sip on the Stella ($10), a signature cocktail of gin and white cranberry, muddled cucumber and basil, finished with soda. Cool, unique, and refreshing… just like the restaurant itself.

PATIENCE MAKES FOR A PRIDEFUL HOME

TYE STOCKTON USED TO EXCITEDLY GREET ANY VISITOR TO HIS FAMILY’S TIMEWORN 1,300 SQUARE FOOT HALF OF A DUPLEX IN EAST VAIL AND TAKE THEM ON A TOUR. Pointing at the scratched and clawed siding, worn shag carpet or the overgrown back porch, he’d start by saying, “One day…” Almost 15 years later, standing in place of that ragged, 1970s-built duplex is a 6,700 square foot, mountain modern, single-family home that was not so much bought or built as it was created by years of fiercely intentional planning and saving by the Stockton family. “Being in real estate, I had the experience of seeing what 1,000 or more buyers would respond to,” Stockton, one of Vail’s top-performing real estate professionals with Liv Sotheby’s International Realty, says. “Then there were all these things you would like to have as a local living in Vail." "We wanted to make it a real house for a full-time family that lives in the mountains.” From their time as newcomers to the Vail Valley in the 90’s, to marriage, through the birth of their two children and into becoming established locals, Stockton and his wife, Brielle, awed over the details of nearby mountain homes, built their business, kept a manila folder of clippings from magazines like Architectural Digest and never let their vision for the future be constrained by their current walls. “We had a specific design list,” Stockton said. “We knew we wanted a three-car garage, a great mudroom, a main-level master bedroom, an open floor plan, vaulted ceilings, big glass windows, a heated patio and driveway, a game room and big outdoor space for the kids to build ski jumps.”

We wanted to make it a real house for a full-time family that lives in the mountains.

When it came time to build, the years the Stockton’s spent living in Vail yielded one more incredible resource: relationships. There is an inherent barter system among locals in Vail, a town of roughly 5,300 people that only incorporated in 1966. A referral among year-round residents often means friendship and that type of friendship is laid deep into the carpentry of the Stockton’s home. “I’m celebrating 26 years of living in Vail, and, in my business, I was able to give people business,” Stockton says. “All these great local people wanted to help us build. We had three premiere architects, builders who regularly take on the specifics of multi-million dollar projects, and the best plumbers and electricians all wanted to pitch in. That is something I feel every time I walk inside.” Now, when visitors arrive at their house, they don’t get some tour of idyllic grandeur. Instead, the Stockton’s seem to have a story for each detail. There is great work done by Randy the trim carpenter, or the diagonal wall that perfectly frames the Gore Range seen first by architect Mike Suman. CONTINUED >

Perhaps the fondest stories he tells, though, are of all the memories. Though the new house was built in place of the old duplex, the family milestones seemed to have somehow carried over. “After an 18 month build, we moved in on November 15,” Stockton says. “It was snowing these big heavy flakes. Our two kids grabbed their sleds and immediately headed outside to the same sledding hill that had always been there. The two Blue Spruce trees we planted when our kids were born are still there.” 40

Expert Says TYE STOCKTON, VAIL HOMEOWNER AND REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL WITH LIV SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY, EXPLAINS WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING YOUR VACATION HOME IN THE MOUNTAINS.

W

hen a 6’2” man and a 5’6” woman look through the same window from the same place, they might not see the same thing. This has nothing to do with gender, everything to do with per-

spective and is just one of the nuances to consider when buying a vacation home in the mountains. Back it up. “The first question I ever ask any of my clients is ‘what do you want to accomplish?’” Tye Stockton, one of Vail’s top-performing real estate brokers with Liv Sotheby’s International Realty, says. “I ask them what the day in the life of their family in the mountains will look like. Are they big skiers quick to get up and get out the door? Do they spend big chunks of time in the house and, if so, what times of the day are they there?” See, buying the right vacation home or condo in the mountains presents some unique chal-

lenges mostly because the experience of being in the mountains, in a vacation home, is not an average experience. Consider your shoes. In the mountains, there is a pair for every activity. You have your ski boots, snow boots, snowshoes, ice skates, running shoes, hiking boots, bike shoes and, of course, your going-out shoes, summer shoes, favorite shoes and shoes you bought and are waiting to wear. That could be up to 50 pairs of shoes needing to be accessed at any time from the entryway. “It is easy to get caught up in the grand things about a house and forget about such basic things as storage,” Stockton said. “It is one of the most common mistakes I see. Living in the mountains comes with a range of toys. The importance of garage space, a good mudroom and storage can’t be understated.” There is a great old saying about having a house in the mountains, and it goes, “Having a house in the mountains is almost as good as having had a friend who has a house in the mountains.” The saying explained? Plan for visitors. “You might consider an open floor plan,” Stockton says. “Something with enough space for three or even more families to gather in an informal way works really well here. The mountains are a place to gather with friends and swap stories. You might also want to think about a place where you can sit and drink wine, have dinner or sit in a hot tub.” Then there are the views, bringing us back to the 6’2” and 5’6” couple so patiently waiting as they stare out the window. While she might see a cloud-capped mountain range, he might see the neighbors’ roof. Let this be a clue to the importance of detail. “Eventually, you have to prioritize, and you do that by allowing yourself the time to gain perspective,” Stockton says. “Those little things like the vibe of the neighborhood, the view out of a hallway window, the coziness of rooms all matter.” ARTICLE JOHN O'NEILL

The Alchemist OUR NEW FAVORITE GUILTY PLEASURE IN BERKLEY.

ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS

T

here are those things in life that we like to call a guilty pleasure. For some of my friends, it’s a massage, for others, it's shopping.

For me, it was getting my nails done. Those days are over since learn-

ing a valuable lesson of why you should NEVER peel gel nail polish off (I’ll let your imagination fill in the gaps why). With that being said, I needed a new pampering treatment. When I heard Alchemy Face Bar opened up their second location in Denver, specifically in one of my favorite hoods Berkley, I made an appointment, and I opted for dermaplaning + facial. I had heard about dermaplaning from celebrities who frequent the treatment, including local celeb Lauren Bushnell from the Bachelorette, who happens to be a regular at Alchemy. After miraculously turning my dry skin to baby smooth, I met with Bre Ortola Morris, the owner of the business, and got a chance to find a bit more about this pampering dreamland and even the secret to great skin. WHAT'S ALCHEMY'S CONCEPT?

Alchemy Face Bar is based on affordable luxury services for all things face. We provide fast, effective, no nonsense services to make you look and feel your best. Our face bar is in an open room where you have a more community-based experience where you can get services from makeup, skin care, lash extensions and facial waxing. Our makeup is our own custom brand featuring all 44

natural products as well as a selection of makeup for film and photography. In our quick service facials, we use the highest quality and organic ingredients to help your skin in this harsh Colorado climate that is inexpensive and also in a timeframe that is convenient from 30-45 minutes in and out the door! HOW’D YOU FIND SUCH AN AMAZING SQUAD?

The girls (Alchemists as I call them!) are all part of the team because of connections from friends or meeting them from past careers. I have been so grateful for the girls we have; they are like family to me. Working with these ladies is honestly like going to work with your close friends every day. Gossip doesn't exist within our stores, and that is one of the most important parts of this career. We prefer to build women up and leave the negativity elsewhere. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE NEW SHOPS AESTHETIC?

The aesthetic that I have gone for while creating Alchemy is a clean, inviting and organic look. I want people to walk and instantly feel comfortable with good energy. My favorite colors are gold and white; you will know this when you walk into either shop! My goal while doing the build out was to create an environment where people walk in and never want to leave because it's that inviting. I feel that way, so I hope others are loving it as much as I do!

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GLOWING AND FLAWLESS SKIN?

Food & Water intake: Eating foods with high sodium will cause retention of fluid around the eyes, which leads to swelling (aka puffy eyes). Avoid or limit high sodium foods just a few days before a big event. Also, remember to hydrate! Lack of water cuts down on blood circulation leaving the skin dry, tight and flaky. Mask it: A hydrating mask (like our delicious strawberry rhubarb mask) a few days before a special event will deliver water directly into skin cells, leaving you with that desired radiant and dewy look. Dermaplaning: If you are not already doing this, you should be! This non-surgical service gives your skin immediate exfoliation for a luminous glow that lasts a week and requires zero downtime. Lastly, don't forget to get plenty of rest. They don't call it "beauty sleep" for nothing! 46

Food & Wine

The Wine of the House A HOW-TO FOR WINE STORAGE IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO START A COLLECTION, BECAUSE, WINE NOT?

ARTICLE MEG SIMON ILLUSTRATOR NEIL MACKAY

W

e had the pleasure of talking to Jack TerHar of SillTerHar Motors about wine. TerHar has been collect-

ing wine for about 40 years. With four separate wine cellars in his collection (in addition to owning Vail Fine Wines in downtown Vail!), we figured TerHar would be the perfect person to talk to about different wine storage options for those just starting out. There are three main factors that need to be considered when storing wine: • light • humidity • temperature

50

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | March 2017

LIGHT

Wine ages best when unexposed to sunlight as UV rays can adversely affect the composition of wines. Many wine bottles are tinted green to help protect the wine, but storing wine in a place where sunlight is not a factor helps to ensure that the wine will not be impacted by the unwanted sun. HUMIDITY

Humidity is also essential in wine storage, mainly because the corks will eventually crack if stored in too dry of an environment. A cracked cork exposes the wine to the atmosphere, allowing the wine to oxidize and spoil. TEMPERATURE

The last and arguably the most important factor to keep in mind with wine storage is temperature. According to TerHar, wine should be stored somewhere between 48 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooler the wine is kept, the longer it will take to develop and age. Not all wine is meant to be aged, so if you are just starting a collection, it’s best to find a store to buy from with educated staff who can tell you how to best store your wine. So now that we’ve covered the basics… what next? There are many different elements to consider when crafting a cellar, but TerHar says to remember that it all boils down to one equation: The Amount of Money Spent = Showiness + Capacity. Once you’ve figured out how much money you have to spend and have decided whether aesthetic appeal or storage capacity is most important, you can begin planning. Wine Cellar Innovations and Wine Enthusiast are two companies that sell pre-made cellars and cooling systems, but even if you are planning to do everything yourself browsing these websites is a great place to begin accumulating ideas. If aesthetics are the priority, Wine Enthusiast offers some gorgeous “furniture” cellars that are all ready to be installed. The main advantage of building something yourself is that it can be much less expensive. TerHar says that a recent trend has been to build cellars in the dead space under staircases and that one could build an under-the-staircase cellar that holds up to 450 bottles of wine for under $4000. With so many variables to consider, the idea of crafting a wine cellar can seem daunting. Like everything, though, the key is to start small. Collect wine within your budget, start with a small cellar, and remember that the less fancy something looks, the less expensive it will be. Enjoy!

have you ever considered DOWNSIZING? When it comes time to consider making changes in your housing situation, downsizing might not be the first conclusion you come to. Yet have you ever considered it? Once you get to a certain point in life, you can choose to stay in your present home, or you can make good use of your investment and take the next step in your evolving lifestyle. Times are changing, and if you ask most people, they want life to be just a little bit simpler, thereby leading to an increased sense of fulfillment in life. Downsizing gives you the chance to own that cool new condo, loft or chic luxury home that’s been catching your eye, to have less to clean and maintain, and the list goes on. The trade-offs can be well worth it.

LOCAL PURVEYORS WITH A GLOBAL REACH As global luxury real estate specialists, our team is primed to advise you and negotiate on your behalf, nationally and internationally: • Team members in all 50 states, as well as in 21 countries around the world • Members of Proxio Pro: International MLS and elite network of luxury agents At every turn, we demonstrate our commitment to enduring relationships and to securing your ideal lifestyle choices. testimonial

“Considering how competitive the Denver real estate market is, house hunting can be frustrating and stressful. However, Karina and her team made the process a positive experience as I searched for a condo in the downtown area. She was responsive, patient, friendly, and honest as we discussed the market, looked at properties, and made offers. Her experience and thoroughness is what allowed me to purchase a property that had received multiple offers. Her people and negotiation skills also enabled me to purchase the property at a price that I was comfortable with and I ended up getting exactly what I had hoped for. If my housing needs change in the future, Karina will be the first person that I call.”

Looking at market conditions, this year is actually a great time to downsize. For the first time in a while, price appreciation of homes is starting to go down; and since there is still a shortage of housing inventory, the resulting fast-moving market will help to sell your current home and get you into a new one with ease. The Denver Luxe Team is here to help you take a deeper look at the current market and consider your options: 2017 could be the year to downsize your home and secure your ideal lifestyle.
