It's Finally Here!

DECEMBER 2017

D

ecember. It's the month I've been waiting for all year long— and I don't think I'm alone in this when I say the holiday season is my FAVORITE time of year!

What's there not to like? There's Christmas music (I have Kelly Clarkson and Pentatonix's holiday albums on repeat), there's chilly sweater weather (finally!), there's social gatherings with family and friends, there's time off work, there's traditions to celebrate, there's glittery lights, buttery cookies and pumpkin-spice everything. Everyone's feeling jolly and there's a lot of love in the air.

For me, I'm especially looking forward to sharing old traditions and starting new ones with my family. Our oldest daughter is now at an age where she "gets" Christmas and believes in Santa Claus. It's a joy to experience the holidays through her eyes. They say once you have kids, Christmas becomes magical again—and I agree! This year, our holiday season kicks off with an annual Breakfast with Santa event, which we attend wearing matching Christmas pajamas! Then we have an annual cookie exchange with our group of friends where we share recipes and make crafts with our kids. The first year there were only a handful of kids and now there will be 16!  On Christmas Eve, we’ll bake Grandma Krause’s coffee cake and let it set overnight. In the morning, we’ll make an egg casserole and enjoy the coffee cake while opening stocking gifts before the main event: Christmas presents! I’m focusing on staying humble and practical this year. My girls have a lot to play with already, so this year they’ll each get a few “fun” presents and some books and clothes. Speaking of traditions, our city has quite a few around this time of year—and you can read all about them on page 26. Another wonderful way to celebrate this season of sharing is to give back to the community. Check out page 30, where we list several organizations that can use your help.

1. We used the homeowners’ existing decorations and tree and added to it. All the reds, chartreuse greens, golds, and silvers mix well together. 2. We beautified the sofa table with a green garland layered in the silver/gold poinsettias and sparkling trees throughout. 3. The TV console was layered with sitting elves, Santas and oversized ornaments to create a traditional holiday feel. 4. A simple arrangement of mercury glass candlesticks paired with some of  the Christmas tree's ornaments  are perfect for the coffee table.  5. CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS TIME-HONORED TRADITIONS THAT ARE UNIQUELY CHANDLER

ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO

26

Chandler Lifestyle | December 2017

W

e may not experience a White Christmas, but here are four ways that the community is making spirits bright in this

great city of ours. TUMBLEWEED TREE LIGHTING AND PARADE OF LIGHTS

Since 1957, Chandler residents have come together to celebrate with an event surrounding a truly unique, 25-foot tree made of nearly 1,000 homegrown tumbleweeds. The tree is sprayed with 15 gallons of white paint, 20 gallons of flame retardant and dusted with 65 pounds of glitter. Following the traditional Parade of Lights, the Chandler mayor and members of the city council flip the switch, setting aglow nearly 1,200 lights on the spectacular tree. “ The atmosphere is electrifying! Everyone has a great time with their families and the community celebrates the holiday season,” says Hermelinda Llamas, special events coordinator for the city of Chandler. The Parade of Lights is complete with marching bands and decorated floats. The event hosts numerous food vendors and sales booths. Kids can take their picture with Santa for free, make crafts in Santa’s Workshop, take a pony ride and play laser tag.

UPLAND DRIVE

About 30 years ago, residents on Upland Drive, a street near Warner Road and the Loop 101, started massively decorating their homes for the holidays. Since then, the tradition has grown into one of Chandler’s most dazzling events.  On the weekends, there are food trucks and visits from Santa Claus. Guests can take a horse drawn carriage ride, snack on cookies and hot chocolate, listen to a barbershop quartet and enjoy a plethora of other performances. On Dec. 22, Disney Princesses will join the festivities thanks to Royal Dreams Entertainment. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the street will be blocked off to vehicles for pedestrian access only. The amazing thing about all of this—there's no committee pulling together this event. The neighbors participate simply because they enjoy doing it. “Every neighbor has their own style. Lots of decorations are handmade. There is a movie theater, Buffy the giant inflatable and lots of Disney character cutouts,” says Katy Brown, an Upland resident. Lights usually turn on the weekend after Thanksgiving and stay up through New Year’s Day. They glow from sundown to midnight. Parking is best on the side streets. CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS (CON TI N U ED) ZOPPÉ FAMILY CIRCUS

For the ninth season, Chandler Center for the Arts presents Zoppé, an Italian Family Circus. Initially booked to generate revenue while the theater was closed for renovations, it’s turned into a signature holiday event. “What makes this circus unique is the Zoppé family themselves. Even though they feature new guest artists each year, the Zoppé family creates that feeling of tradition and home. You're invited into their traveling home, an intimate 500-seat tent,” says Michelle Mac Lennan, general manager for Chandler Center for the Arts. This year marks their 175th anniversary honoring Old World Italian traditions. Sixth generation circus performer Giovanni Zoppé (Nino) is now the patriarch of the family. Giovanni’s son Julien made his first appearance in the circus when he was just six days old. He celebrates his 7th birthday this year and will perform alongside his father. “Chandler is all about family, neighbors and friends. Chandler shares those values with the Zoppé Family Circus,” says Mac Lennan. They have a special New Year's Eve planned under the Big Top, which will include a countdown and party favors. The Zoppés also conduct a circus camp for kids. Learn more at ChandlerCenter.org.

Ginger Chabot

THE GINGER SNAPS

Years ago, Ginger Chabot helped pull together a group of fellow city of Chandler employees to sing Christmas carols at a holiday party. They ended up with 20 singers, a couple of guitarists and a flutist. They had such a good time, a few decided to continue the tradition. “I organized the group for 20 years and am hoping someone will continue the tradition,” says the recently-retired Chabot. Each year, between eight and 14 people sign up for the choir. Their two main performances consist of office caroling and a visit to the Kingston Senior Holiday Luncheon, sponsored by the city's housing division. Occasionally, they sing at toy drives or other events by request. “This has been such a great way to get people from different departments together for something other than business,” Chabot says. “Something that was so touching for me was when the group decided we needed a name. I rarely use it as it seems so self-serving, but I was flattered when they chose the name 'Ginger Snaps.' Hopefully it will continue until no one remembers where the name came from.” 28

Giving Hearts, Giving Back

SIX THOUGHTFUL WAYS TO VOLUNTEER AND DONATE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

T

ARTICLE ALISON STANTON

his month, otherwise known as the busiest time of the year, people may be looking for a way to stop the hustle and bustle—at

least for a little while—and gather together with friends and family members to give back to the community. From donating needed items to volunteering time at events, here are six ways that Chandler residents of all ages can help out during December.

FOR OUR CITY CHANDLER For Our City Chandler is a collaborative group of various entities (government, nonprofit, faith-based, businesses and school personnel) who comes together regularly to address issues in Chandler and provide support for  the community. Since 2012, the nonprofits that provide holiday assistance have worked together to streamline and improve this process as much as possible. Representatives meet to plan their holiday events, pre-register families and share their registration lists, collaborate on food and gift drives, and share resources when possible; this helps cuts down on duplication of services and donations, which has allowed each agency to better serve families in need. ForOurCityChandler.org

DECEMBER HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE DAY WHEN: 8:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 WHERE: Chandler CARE Center, 777 E. Galveston St., Chandler. DETAILS: Volunteers from the community are always needed to

help with tasks like setting up craft tables, bagging gifts for kids and helping families carry items to their car. Minors are welcome to help when accompanied by a parent/guardian.

STEP UP USA Step Up USA is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with one key mission: To elevate human kindness through easy and fun volunteer opportunities for kids, teens and adults. Founder Jill Smyros is a lifelong volunteer and knows the importance of giving  back—a value  that she is passing along to her young son, Ty. In addition to offering a number of ways for people to give back throughout the year, Step Up USA has two key events scheduled during December. 1. SENIOR CENTER HOLIDAY PARTY & TALENT SHOW WHEN: 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 WHERE: An assisted living facility in Mesa; “Like” Step Up on

Facebook at Facebook.com/ElevateHumanKindness to see updates on the location. Details: Bring holiday cheer to residents of an assisted living facility; kids, teens and adults can help with the holiday party complete with cookie decorating, ornament designing and lots of holiday song caroling.   2. 4TH ANNUAL “MAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT” EVENT WHEN: 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17 WHERE: Step Up Headquarters, 3529 E. Fandango Drive, Gilbert

Details: Volunteers are needed to stuff hundreds of care bags filled with small items including books, stuffed animals, fuzzy socks and toothbrushes. The bags will then be distributed to hospice patients and homeless children throughout the Valley. Those who are unable to attend but would still like to donate items are welcome to do so. Donation requests include small new or lightly used blankets, stuffed animals, books and new toothbrushes. They may be dropped off from now until the event and can be left on the porch.

GIVING HEARTS, GIVING BACK (CON TI N U ED)

911 W. STEVEN MARTIN POLICE TOY DRIVE For Phoenix radio personality W. Steven Martin, the holidays always meant receiving hundreds of requests for help from listeners of his radio program. In 1989, local law enforcement officers were enlisted to distribute toys to children and grant the wishes of hundreds of needy families. Police officers stopped by to select gifts from a stockpile of toys for children and adolescents from families in neighborhoods the officers knew well. The belief was that by allowing young people to see the police in a new light of giving and caring, that bonds would be formed between law enforcement and young victims of crime and poverty. Over time, the 911 W. Steven Martin Police Toy Drive has grown substantially; now, hundreds of officers distribute thousands of toys to kids around the state. WHEN: Throughout the month of December, up until Christmas WHERE: Toys may be dropped off at any Valley Chevrolet deal-

ership, in addition to a number of other places in Chandler. Check 911ToyDrive.com for details on where to donate. DETAILS: The website includes a list of the most-needed items this

year for different ages of boys and girls; gift cards, larger-sized bikes, movie passes and good quality stuffed animals are also needed.

pizzas are made with the freshest ingredients and fired in that special oven, giving them a notably charred, wood-burning taste. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, pastas and desserts are also available. The meat and cheese board is a great choice for a small group to graze on before the entrees arrive. There are five salads, including the popular Caprese Salad made with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil pesto and balsamic vinegar and served with a slice of one of their fabulous wood-burning breads (take your pick between sundried tomato or rosemary farm and olive). The sandwiches are equally as popular,

with choices that include Italian Stallion, Caprese, Araujo’s Meatball and Nobile Chicken Parmesan. All the pastas are homemade—the Bolognese Gnocchi is especially scrumptious, made with veal ragu, herb ricotta and arugula. The Pasta Pomodoro has housemade pappardelle, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil. And, be sure to save room for dessert with choices such as an Elvis pie, Nutella cheesecake, flavored gelato, chocolate coffee brownie or sticky toffee cake, which is a date cake that is topped with bourbon caramel sauce and vanilla gelato. SPECIALTY HOUSE COCKTAILS

Bella Gusto proudly uses Tito's Handmade Vodka to concoct their four specialty drinks. The Bella Gusto Mule is made with Tito’s, pineapple juice, basil, ginger beer and jalapeno. The Arizona Sunset has Tito’s, watermelon limeade, guava juice and fresh thyme. The Kat’s Kooler is made with Tito’s, housemade limoncello, fresh basil, lemonade and soda water. And the Blackberry Smash Mojito is made with Tito’s, blackberry, mint and lime. A wide array of red and white wines and draft and bottled beers make perfect dining companions. My children’s favorite holiday tradition is going to their grandma’s annual Christmas pajama party. I remember running down the stairs to the smell of these perfectly baked golden brown vessels that could be topped with everything from fruit and nuts  to sugars and syrup. The best part is they have a boat-like rim that keeps all the delicious toppings from escaping. Nothing replaces the feeling of sitting around the kitchen table with my parents and little brothers; the feeling of relaxing and smiling and truly enjoying each other's company and the love we shared as a family.
