Lifestyle Letter

Summertime and the livin’ is easy

AUGUST 2017 PUBLISHER

W

e are in the height of our beautiful summer season and all that goes along with it. How blessed we are to have access to such a plethora of activities and adventures. Carlsbad Lifestyle has helped you out this month with some fun ideas on how to enjoy the dog days of summer… from Del Mar Dog Beach to Hawaii, we’ve got you covered. We have some short Coaster rides that reveal adventures you may have not yet explored…just a stop away!  Determine the activity in which you wish to indulge and we have the beach for you.  August issue covers all the best local beaches for that romantic walk, playing with kids or the perfect wave. Then, we take you back in time to Old Hollywood’s, cowboy movie days with a walk through time and Leo Carrillo Ranch.  My parents were of this era, when livin’ the dream was reenacting an old western.  We vacationed at nearby dude ranches such as Palm Springs’ Smoketree Ranch and Alisal Guest Ranch, horseback riding, square dancing and singing around the campfire.  Leo Carrillo created his personal destination resort right here in Carlsbad, which he shared often with his fellow movie stars.  I am sure one could hear the occasional “Hey Paaaancho”, “ Hey Ciiiiisco” ringing through the canyon.  Now we all can enjoy Leo’s own “Ponderosa Ranch” (trivia question for those of you over 50). While you are out and about this summer, I ask that the Carlsbad Lifestyle family please support our advertising partners.   Without our partners, we could not bring you this beautiful, fun and interesting publication.   Each business is vetted to provide you, my readers, with the best possible services and products.  Please stop by their stores, restaurants and offices and tell them Carlsbad Lifestyle sent you! You will not be disappointed. I hope we have given you some fun adventures to explore and some to dream on.  I wish you all a marvelous rest of your summer….

! h c a e B a s Life' What's your Beach Style? ARTICLE CLAUDIA PIEPENBURG

F

eaturing over seventy miles of coastline, San Diego County is truly a beach-lovers paradise, and for lucky Carlsbad residents, many of the best beaches are in North County. Not all beaches are the same. Sure, every beach is "...a pebbly or sandy shore, adja-

cent to a seashore..." but what if you'd rather surf than sunbathe, or maybe your grand-

children are visiting for the day so you're looking for a "kid-friendly" beach with restrooms close-by and maybe even a playground? In North County you can choose a beach depending on what activity you've planned? We spoke with local Carlsbad residents who shared their "best beaches for..." with Carlsbad Lifestyle.

Best Beach for Walking/Jogging/Running:

South Ponto Located at Carlsbad Boulevard, north of La Costa Boulevard and south of the Batiquitos Lagoon, South Ponto is one of the widest beaches in the county, and is easy to reach from the Pacific Coast Highway, where there’s limited free parking or via the parking lot at the far south end of South Carlsbad State Beach. Open daily from 6 AM to 10 PM, South Ponto is also one of the few undeveloped beaches in the county. It’s the ideal beach for folks who want to get in their daily exercise on a wide stretch of sand that has both public restrooms and showers. Parking is $8 per vehicle in the pay lot. visitcarlsbad.com 22

Carlsbad Lifestyle | August 2017

Best Beach for Families/Kids:

Moonlight Beach Managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Moonlight State Beach is located on Encinitas Boulevard at B Street in Encinitas. (Because it’s operated by the city of Encinitas, California State Parks Annual Day Use Passes are not accepted at Moonlight) The wide, sandy beach offers something for everyone in the family; there are even volleyball and tennis courts. Parents find it easy to keep their children occupied with fun activities all day long here with the picnic area, concession stand, playground, equipment rentals and fire rings. Moonlight Beach has yearround lifeguard services and is ADA accessible. The beach is open daily from 4 AM to 2 AM. Street parking is free. Lot parking fees depend on the season. cityofencinitas.org

Best Beach for Surfing:

Trestles Trestles is actually five surf spots located at San Onofre State Beach: Uppers, Lowers, Middles, Barb-Wires and Cottons. The beach, which got its name from the train trestle that surfers and beachgoers walk under to reach the shoreline, is located off of the 5 Freeway at Basilone Road. Access to the beach isn’t easy: the shortest route, which takes fifteen minutes, is from the trailhead at Cristianitos Road, where the road crosses over the freeway, and where there’s a pay parking lot. But for surf fanatics, the walk’s worth it. The site of numerous surfing competitions over the years (in April, May and September) Trestles is known for having a range of swell directions, and waves that vary depending on the tides and sand flow. Surfers also appreciate the fact that the beach is secluded (at one time this stretch of San Onofre State Beach was part of the Camp Pendleton Marine Base), so there aren’t any houses nearby. solspot.com

Best Beach for Out-of-Town Visitors:

Tamarack State Beach Located at the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue, Tamarack State Beach is the quintessential Southern California beach: wide stretches of sand, a four-mile seawall walking/jogging/running path, even jetties where your out-of-town visitors can watch people fishing. Out-of-towners and locals alike appreciate the beautiful sunsets. Every evening people gather at the far north end of the beach to watch the sun sink into the ocean, and then stroll into the village for dinner. There’s a pay parking lot at Tamarack (fees vary) but most people park for free along Carlsbad Boulevard and the surrounding neighborhood surface streets. Restrooms are available near the parking lot, as are spigots for washing off sand. There are five picnic tables and lifeguards are on-site during the summer. The beach is open from 5 AM to 10 PM every day. visitcarlsbad.com

Best “Dog-Friendly” Beach

NORTH BEACH This was an easy choice: North Beach in Del Mar, also known as Dog Beach, is the only beach in the area that allows dogs. The beach is north of 29 TH Street, stretching almost a half-mile to the border of Del Mar and Solana Beach. During the summer (June 16th through Labor Day) dogs must be leashed, otherwise they’re allowed to roam freely as long as they obey their owners’ voice commands. delmar.ca.us Even if you have other favorites, there's one thing everyone can agree on: we're lucky to live close to so many incredible beaches. So, pack up your flip-flops, sunscreen and beach towel, and "let's go to the beach!" August 2017 | Carlsbad Lifestyle

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park LATE ACTOR’S HOME IN CARLSBAD OFFERS SERENITY AND A LOOK BACK AT OLD HOLLYWOOD

ARTICLE DEBBIE L. SKLAR

N

ot every city can say it has a link to the glory days of Old Hollywood, but Carlsbad can, thanks to 1920s-1960s actor Leo Carrillo. Whether you’re a fan of the Golden Era or

not, it is at the sprawling 27-acre Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, once owned by former co-star of TV’s The Cisco Kid, that you can be swept back in time. The Cisco Kid was a half-hour American Western series starring Duncan Renaldo  in the title role, The Cisco Kid, and Carrillo as his jovial sidekick, Pancho. You can catch it on reruns or via YouTube. The ranch is cradled in a canyon – located at 6200 Flying Leo Carrillo Lane. It was a second home and getaway for Carrillo and his wife, Edith Shakespeare Haeselbarth and

Luckily, there was a realtor in the group and he said “I have the perfect spot…it’s in Carlsbad!” In Carrillo’s Day, it was a working ranch of more than 1,700 acres with cattle and other animals. It was not unusual for him to entertain many of his Hollywood friends at the ranch. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were frequent visitors as were other Hollywood stars who wanted to get away from L.A. Sara Kelly, archivist from the Ranch said “Leo wanted to create the glory days of old California – he liked to be the Don, be on the land, ride horses, and barbecue.”
