Life is Rad in Carlsbad MARCH 2017
H
i Everyone! My name is Margi Blash Filipovitch and I’d like to start by saying I’m honored to be the new Editor for Carlsbad Lifestyle. I’ll give you a little bit of background on me. I am a Southern California girl! I grew up in Laguna Niguel then moved to Los Angeles where I attended U.S.C. (FIGHT ON!) where I studied Communication and Musical Theater. But, I would have to say the best part was meeting my husband Nick Filipovitch, graduate of CHHS and long time local resident.
After graduating, I stayed in Los Angeles and worked as a red carpet reporter and Television Host, where I interviewed almost every A-List celebrity for outlets such as Discovery Channel, Hollywood.com, People Magazine and Us Weekly. I attended events such as The Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes, Film Premieres and Junkets and much much more. It was a wild ride but when Nick and I decided to get married we knew Carlsbad was where we were going to call ‘home’ and the perfect place to raise a family. We got married in 2011 and now have two young kids, our daughter Georgia (3) and our baby boy Troy (10 months). Life is a bit crazy right now trying to balance it all, and very loud, but we're so grateful for all of it. San Diego is a popular tourist destination with Carlsbad being one of the top cities to visit. March is a great time to enjoy our city before the crowds start flooding in for Spring Break. Life can get pretty hectic these days. We’re always on the go and constantly connected to our devices. It’s easy to forget how fortunate we are to live here. How many times have you driven by the Flower Fields but never really stopped to appreciate them? One of my favorite spots to enjoy the Flower Fields is up on Armada Drive. You can take a picnic lunch, or sometimes a great food truck is there during weekday lunch times, and overlook the fields with a complete ocean view. It’s breathtaking. I hope this month you remember to slow down and focus on what’s important. Take time for yourself and enjoy your home with your family and friends.

Garage Sales, recommendations, neighborhood crime and safety watch, babysitters, block parties…it’s all here and more. A few months ago, for example, a friend shared that her dog was missing on Facebook.
"We have a cat who wouldn't come out from under our couch. We thought it might help her to resocialize by setting her up in a large kennel. We posted on Nextdoor to ask if anyone had a kennel available. A neighbor responded that day to say she had an extra one and that we could come by and get it. We picked it up and had a chance to meet her. The kennel was the perfect solution for the cat!" - Diane Hagerty, Carlsbad Resident

o boarding pass required. No long security lines. No delays. Imagine being able to relax like you are on vacation, just by stepping into
your own backyard. Philip Lizarraga, founder and owner of Team G7 Landscape, a local landscape design and build company in Carlsbad, specializes in transforming your yard into your favorite place to visit. Even the smallest spaces, with the right design, can create an entire new home and become your dream destination 365 days a year. How do they do it?
First, Team G7 will help you discover all the ways which you wish you could use your yard – to entertain, relax, or enjoy with your family.  They sit with you and ask many important questions, while answering yours, so they can truly discover your hopes and dreams for your yard.
20
Carlsbad Lifestyle | March 2017
Next, Team G7 will use a collaborative design process to take your wish list and creatively fit it into the size and configuration of your yard. They will present you with two initial drafts, in 2D or 3D. One draft, Plan A, reflects the clients initial vision and a second draft, Plan B, showing additional creative options that could add even more magic. This process results in a design that truly reflects your heartbeat. As described by Philip, “We are able to give our clients what they really want by developing a relationship of trust – through keeping our word, being on time, exuding creativity and passion, and delivering more than we said we would.”
"THE DIFFERENCE WAS THAT OUR PROJECT WAS CREATED AND INSTALLED AND LOOKED AFTER BY A FIRM THAT CARED WHAT THEIR CLIENTS WANTED.” - CHRIS & SHELLY
This is where the magic happens – where the entire Team G7 gets involved. The team’s craftsmen transform your space quickly and professionally. CONTINUED >

DREAM VACATION (CON TI N U ED)
So, are you concerned about your space not being large enough? No problem! “Designing for small spaces, without it feeling or being cluttered, is our specialty! A small space, that is not well designed with placed elements, always looks smaller,” explains Lizarraga. “Doesn’t a new home always seem to look smaller before the carpet and the furniture, than after? That is because an open space, with well-designed elements, will make it not only look larger, but it will be larger because now there is a purpose for the space(s). Our job as designers is to use proven design principles with different materials and textural choices, possible elevation changes, line flows, the proper long-term plant choices, etc., to create a space that not only works, but is also aesthetic.” Lizarraga continues “I personally have always centered on the clients “whys” and their personalities and how the design and the quality products and materials can be blended in a way that provides an over-the-top design with an over-the-top experience for our clients. I have learned that it is less about the materials and more about how you put the right elements together to fit the client’s dreams, that makes the real difference. You can use the most expensive materials and with a poor design you have accomplished nothing except spent a lot of money.” If you have ever considered making your backyard into the landscape of your dreams but didn’t know where to start, take advantage of Team G7’s complimentary consultations and see what Philip Lizarraga and his Team G7 can do to transform your home into your dream destination. Initially Choisser’s company was called Coleen’s Interiors but because there were three women named Coleen with interior design businesses in the county, she decided that a name change was in order. “My middle name is Anna, and then one night I had a dream about Rodeo Drive, so that’s Before
where the name came from.” When pressed to choose her favorite project Choisser said: “My favorite design is the one I’ve just finished.” She did say that her recent remodel of the 1906 beach cottage in La Jolla whose photos are featured here, is a project she particularly enjoyed— in fact this last renovation is the third time she has remodeled that home. It went from a Tuscan styled home to a more modern contemporary beach feel that's more minimalist with clean lines. Choisser cautioned homeowners planning a remodel, whether they’re simply changing the look of a room or two, or removing walls and ripping up flooring, to consult a designer. “Even if your project isn’t a big one, hire a designer to come in for two hours to give you some ideas. Look for someone who is trained, has a three-year degree and if your project involves major renovations, always get references. “ She said that people often make major monetary mistakes because they assume that they know what’s going to look good in their own home. “A designer will
