Happy Hols!

I

t snowed November 4 in Northern Michigan, dusting my old stomping grounds with the promise of the December holidays. Here in Atlanta, I look for fresh magnolia branches tied with red gingham ribbon and outdoor pots puffed up with red dogwood, vine balls, pine boughs, bittersweet, purple pansies, Redbor kale and cabbages to signal the coming of my favorite holiday season. I scavenged for some giant pine cones on a recent trip to Hilton Head and will dot my Christmas decor with them, remembering when my mom brought me a basket of the huge pine cones she found in the yard of her and my step-dad’s place there.

Forty years earlier, she and I filled paper grocery bags with tiny versions (these mini pine cones were no bigger than a thumbnail) for a Girl Scout project. We saved tuna cans all year and my dad painted them matte black at his shop. Then, we used epoxy to glue 1” pieces of 3/4” copper pipe that he’d cut for us, into the center of the cans to hold a red taper candle. My fellow scouts and I glued the tiny pine cones onto the outside of the little cans, tied together two candles (probably with red gingham ribbon) and voila - gifts for our mothers. We had those pine cone candle holders for years and I’m sure families in our hometown did, too.  This year, I’ll visit the wholesale f lorist with my dear friend Sean O’Keefe and choose bundles of fresh f lowers that call out to me. My two daughters will spread them out on the kitchen table, collecting every vase and vessel in the house and arrange the blooms for every room.  I’d say it’s a tradition. It’s our second year doing this, so yes, it’s our new tradition. It’s never too late to start making new holiday memories.  I’m so nostalgic. Especially at this time of year. I hope you are, too.

BUCKHEAD LIVING Isakson Living, a nationally recognized, award-winning residential community developer, held its anticipated groundbreaking of Peachtree Hills Place in October. Guests heard from Andy Isakson, visionary and managing partner of Isakson Living, Mayor Sam Massell, president of Buckhead Coalition and others. Andy Isakson says, “We are excited to begin construction on this long-anticipated community which will be a transitional event in how we look at residential options and lifestyles for those 55+.” Located in the heart of Buckhead, Peachtree Hills Place offers members  unprecedented access to the best restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Ideal for the active lifestyle, Peachtree Hills Place will boast walking trails, tournament-worthy croquet courts and future access to the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY The Atlanta Opera will present "From Opera to Opry: Liquor, Love and the Lord" on Tuesday, December 5, at The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse. Now in its second year, the holiday concert, in collaboration with ADA Ovations, will feature renowned professional opera singers as well as the bluegrass and country stylings of Cletus McHatfield and the McHatfield Family Singers. The combination of the musical genres gets to the heart of the striking similarity between the themes and inspiration that drove both legendary opera composers and iconic country songwriters to write the music that speaks to us all. The evening’s first half includes performances 12

of great opera arias, followed by a second half of country music similar to what you might hear at the Grand Ole Opry. The performing artists--Michael Mayes, Leah Partridge, Corey Crider and Jonathan Burton--are international opera singers who also share a lifelong passion for country music and the skills to play multiple instruments, namely guitar. These singers are as authentic in their operatic performances as they are in playing rousing renditions of classic country hits. The Atlanta Opera presents "From Opera to Opry: Liquor, Love and the Lord" on December 5 at 7:30 p.m. at The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse. AtlantaOpera.org, 404.881.8885. $35

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS After Thanksgiving, we’re in a full sprint to the holiday season. Before you know it family is arriving on your door step! Here are a few helpful hints to preparing your home for the holiday hustle: Run the self cleaner on your oven so that its ready for cookie baking and family dinners. Run your shower curtains and liners through the gentle cycle of your washing machine. If you don’t have time to have all of the carpets cleaned before the holidays, simply spot clean some of the more trafficked areas. Wipe down all of your appliances. Afterwards, a drop of baby oil on stainless steel appliances really makes them shine like new. If you use a cleaning service, don’t forget to call them early to schedule your holiday clean. Their schedules fill up quickly during the holiday season. These little tips will allow you to spend less time cleaning up and more time with your family and friends. MaidRight.com 770.676.3086.

GIVE A BOOK Love Around the Table, a new short story anthology about second chances at love and second chances at life, is a perfect gift for the holidays. All 100% of eBook royalties go directly to Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. When you purchase this book as a gift for someone or a gift for yourself, you’re keeping families close. INGREDIENTS:

8 eggplants (long, thin and firm, such as Japanese eggplants) Sea salt 1/2 lb Mozzarella cheese 1 1/2 cups Parmigiano (grated) 1/2 lb smoked Provolone  1 3/4 oz 00 farina flour (or white pastry flour)  20 basil leaves 1 quart peanut or vegetable oil for frying (NOTE: Do not use olive oil) 1 cup of Mamma Agata’s Tomato Sauce (you can order online), or any tomato sauce you like  MAMMA AGATA’S SECRETS:

The type of eggplant is very important - it needs to be long, thin and firm; Japanese eggplants work well.

Buy fresh mozzarella cheese (in water). Two days before, remove cheese from the water and place in a covered bowl in the refrigerator to dry out.

Wash eggplant, remove tops and ends. Peel skin lengthwise in strips keeping some skin on.

Slice eggplants lengthwise about 1/2 inch thick.

Layer eggplant slices around edge of a strainer; sprinkle each slice with a pinch of sea salt.

After thirty minutes, gently squeeze out excess water 3-4 slices of eggplant at a time from top to bottom. Do not rinse off salt.

Place the flour on a plate. Dip in eggplant to cover both sides. Work quickly, you do not want the eggplant to absorb too much flour.

Using a deep frying pan, pour in oil leaving one inch from the top. The oil should be very hot.

Fry the eggplant until golden brown. Remove and place onto a paper towel
