Hey Sporty Spice!

OCTOBER 2017

B

uckHaven Lifestyle is proud to be a sponsor again for Polo in the Pines, a two-day festival honoring cancer survivors among us and raising funds for much-needed research while celebrating the great sport of polo here in the green Atlanta fields. When our lifestyle guru Sean O'Keefe came to us three years ago and suggested we collaborate with the PIP planners as media partner, we leaped at the opportunity to contribute, in some small way. This month, I'll dust off my fanciest hat (that is, Darce Richardson, our coordinating publisher will dust off an extra hat for me) and we will all join the fun October 7 and 8. While Saturday's event is a sit-down dinner (tickets still available), Sunday's brunch is a family-affair with bites from some of our favorite chefs and a more casual flair.  Please join us in fighting cancer nearby! That's me, waving from the rail of my dear friend Tom's boat this summer. He's battling liposarcoma like a champ. I love you TOM!! Cheers to all of you embroiled in a battle and know you are loved, too.

is the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park where the birthplace, childhood school, beloved Texas White House ranch and resting place of our 36th president grace the rolling hills along the Pedernales River. Touring the ranch where time stands still at 1960, nine hulking televisions, overhead lights galore and 72 telephone lines (including phones at the President’s bedside and under his place at the long dinner table) remind us this man worked at a blistering pace night and day. He had a standing order with the local Cadillac dealer who brought him a new white convertible every year. Two are on display in the garage next to the still-active airstrip and working barn. His herd of 150 beautiful little Hereford Longhorn cattle continue to thrive (with the help of breeding efforts to keep them circa 1960) and you can snuggle them in their tidy corral. Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center with her mother, Sharon Knight, for treatment of leiomyosarcoma—a cancer Sharon had been battling for 20+ years. That’s 20 years of motherhood, birthdays, holidays and life laced with treatments, surgeries, fears and questions. While the journey was often challenging, Sharon always found the bright side, proclaiming, “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into a positive.” It was that day that doctors stressed the importance of research as they searched for a cure. Inspired by her mother’s positivity, Tina made the choice to find joy while working to fund cancer research that could impact countless families facing the same battle. With her heart of gold, Tina forged ahead and launched what would ultimately become Polo in the Pines, an exciting polofilled weekend that would fund leiomyosarcoma research in honor of her mother. So, why polo? Not only do the stately horses, green pastures, and Pretty Woman polo attire provide the most amazing ambiance, but also the sport is historically philanthropic. Georgia's distinctive towering pines canopy Atlanta, giving it the nickname, 'City in a Forest,' providing a beautiful home for the Atlanta Regional Polo Center. Nestled in Vinings on an inviting stretch of the Chattahoochee River, the polo fields offer the perfect setting for supporters to enjoy a day of fun and philanthropy. This beautiful backdrop drew the lifelong equestrian, Tina, and connected her to Jolie Liston, the backbone of Atlanta’s thriving polo community--thus helping make the idea of a polo fundraiser a reality.

POLO IN THE ARTICLE MARGARET SULLIVAN | PHOTOGRAPHY LIZ ERIKSON

Now, five years later, patrons flock to the beautiful polo fields to sip champagne and enjoy polo matches, while funding critical cancer research. Each year, the organization celebrates a different honoree and benefits research for the honoree’s diagnosis. This year is uniquely honoring Saville and Lilia Sullivan, two sisters who were each diagnosed with different types of brain cancer in 2016. The weekend will kick off on Saturday, October 8, where the Sullivan sisters’ remarkable story will be told to a crowd of over 400 supporters with the soft sounds of polo mallets whacking and horses galloping in the background. To top off the weekend, Sunday’s Atlanta Brunch Festival will feature more polo matches, as some of the city’s top restaurants compete for the title of Atlanta “Best Brunch Bite.” All proceeds from the weekend will go directly to the Sharon McCollum Knight, Polo in the Pines Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation. The fund will directly benefit brain tumor research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in honor of the Sullivan sisters. In addition to all of their generous sponsors, Polo in the Pines is incredibly grateful to Jolie Liston and the Atlanta Regional Polo Center for making this incredible weekend possible. For more tickets and information, visit  PoloInThePines.com. Be sure to give a nod to all the generous sponsors, listed on the Editor's Page. 20

PINES MEET JOLIE LISTON

Jolie has played in every Polo in the Pines match, and you'll see her again this year. LP: How long have you been involved in polo in ATL? JL: I started playing polo in 1980. My father played and introduced me to the sport. LP: How has the polo scene changed in our state? JL: Polo in Atlanta has become more diverse. There are now four polo clubs in the Atlanta area and it’s not just for the very wealthy anymore. Anyone can participate at various levels. I also see a lot more women and kids playing than ever before. LP: Tell us about your horses. JL: There are too many to list for a short article! A few that are special to me are Alabama, Georgia, Pikachu and Snippet. They are the young horses I am currently training for polo. I rescued Alabama and Georgia from a kill pen in Louisiana, which makes training them even more special. Philomena is another special horse as she is one of my best. LP: Why is polo such an exciting sport to play?  JL: Different people will give you different answers to this question but for me, the relationship between the horse and rider makes polo exciting. We ask a lot of our horses and I consider them part of the team. Racing down the field at top speed chasing a little white ball can also be an adrenaline rush!  October 2017 | BuckHavenLifestyle.com

BHL: Imagine you have

the day off… Where would you like to go in BuckHaven for breakfast, lunch, drinks then dinner? SG: A full day of food and fun would begin at Highland

Bakery--they have sweet potato pancakes! Enough said! For lunch, I’ll be at The Big Ketch... great fresh seafood... great atmosphere, reminds me of Florida. Drinks at the Palm... Love their new atrium bar, can grab great apps and a glass of wine with my girlfriends. We LOVE it. Then for dinner, I love HAVEN.  Romantic night out with my boyfriend... intimate, not too loud, delicious food!  BHL: When is your birthday? Where would you love someone to shop locally for

your birthday gift? SG: My birthday is February 18th... my go-to spot for the perfect gift is Ona, in

shops around Lenox... from candles to loungewear, great stationery, and beautiful baby gifts! Love that store, and they make a great gift bag! So I hope someone goes there for me! BHL: What nonprofits do you make time for and why? SG: I try to spend my time and energy on two local charities. The Rally founda-

tion and Camp Twin Lakes. Both of these make sure to keep the money here in ATL, and 94 cents of every dollar goes DIRECTLY to kids... I used to spread myself too thin, with too many charities, and I picked these two because they really give back to my community. BHL: How about the locker rooms? Where do you like to do YOUR interviews

with athletes and what is your go-to question to pull them out of their heads? SG: Well, I have never had a problem in over 20 years with athletes treating me

with respect. They have been great. I prefer to do any interviews and interactions on the field. I think both player/interviewer are more comfortable.   BHL: What games are you looking forward to covering this month?  SG: October 27th is a super Saturday for local college foot-

ball: Georgia and Florida battle in Jacksonville, and GT is at Clemson!  Gonna be a blast.

lay It Again, Sam, the Notable Life of Sam Massell, Atlanta’s First Minority Mayor” tells the life of this over-achiever from birth as a downtown Piedmont

baby through Druid Hills childhood, college life, World War II service, and four accompanies him in young adulthood when he struggles between pride and prejudice for being Jewish, and shares today’s philosophical differences between conservative Republican colleagues and his liberal civic service history as a Democrat. This work reports on his personal and political life, identifying warts as well as winnings. Still working full-time at age 90 in the nonprofit arena, he reflects with relief and reward on the legacy of his mayorship, that of peacefully steering Atlanta through the transformation from an all-white power structure to a predominantly black city government.   Separate chapters provide insight into his work ethic, describing successes with 20 years in commercial real estate; 22 years in elected offices; 13 years in the tourism industry, and now into his 30th year of association management. After being president of Atlanta’s city council for eight years, he was elected mayor of this city, during which time he provided MARTA (the mass transit system); developed the Omni Coliseum, and the Five Points Central City Woodruff Park all with no call on ad valorem taxes. He also pioneered minority opportunities, appointing the first female to the City Council and the first blacks as department heads in 125+ years. Mayor Massell explains that the present chapter itemizing some of his role as founding president of the Buckhead Coalition is on-going, and points to the community’s explosive skyline built during his stewardship. The branding of Buckhead nationally as “The Address of Choice” has obviously not been by accident, and continues as his mission. Along this path, he has been inducted into the “Halls of Fame” in the fields of business, government, civil rights, hospitality and influence. “Play It Again, Sam,” authored by Charles McNair, with Foreword by Amb.
