Hello BuckHaven

SEPTEMBER 2016

W

hether or not you’re a Falcons fan, you have to admit to being just the teensiest bit excited to see the new stadium taking shape downtown. The $1.5 billion, 2 million square foot behemoth boasts grandiose stats that make even a Saints fan swoon: Total seating capacity (football) - 71,000 Number of suites: 190 Stadium height: 30 stories (305 feet) Concessions: 673 (the Dome has 407) Bars/restaurants: 24 (4 at the Dome) Scoreboard size: 63,800 square feet - that’s the largest in the NFL! See what I mean? Brianna Stade is a Brookhaven resident and has cheered with the Atlanta Falcons for four years. She has been a part of the Mercedes Benz Stadium construction project since the first brick arrived on site. She shares a tour on page 24. It’s a month of doing and giving in the Lifestyle Publications world.  We had fun planning a contest for you to win a day of pampering with hair and make-up at Van Michael Salon, dinner at Davio’s Italian Steakhouse and massages and a luxury stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with transportation for the winner plus one pal compliments of Posh Limousine. Head to our website to enter and splash out the contest on your social media for me! We'll be eating out a lot this month, supporting Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC) during Brookhaven Dines Out, a series of benefit nights at neighboring eateries and restaurants in the Buckhaven area. A percentage of all sales on scheduled days will benefit the families served at Atlanta's two Ronald McDonald Houses. Participating Buckhead and Brookhaven restaurants include: Genki, Lucky's Burger and Brew, Nancy G's, Newk's Brookhaven, Moe's, Taziki's, The Southern Gentleman, Zoe's and many more. For a full calendar listing of dates and participating restaurants, please visit ARMHC.org.

Every spring for the last 14 years, the Van Michael Salon leadership team does their part to create international goodwill by sharing tricks of the trade and latest trends with stylists who come all the way from Japan to learn from these experts. Upstairs at the Aveda Institute on Peachtree earlier this summer, 40 students watched Van Michael Salon’s Director of Color Natalie Gurley demonstrate the newest color techniques (a splash of magenta, an exclamation point on a head of smooth dark hair). The students--all Van Michael partners/salon owners and their top stylists from Japan were noticeably alert, making notes, recording every word on tablets and smart phones, taking photos and straining to hear the interpreter. “You’ll never find more attentive and polite students. They want to soak up as much as they can about our tools and techniques and especially American trends,” says  Van Council, one of two brothers whose names grace Van Michael salons in Atlanta, Miami and Japan. Van welcomed the guests, introducing his Atlanta directors, who served as teachers for the two-day workshop. Brother Michael Council was at the salon in Sandy Springs, where he cuts and styles some of Atlanta’s most beautiful people.  Van Michael Salon has welcomed Japanese partners annually, including more than 80 one year. “They learn about how we operate the business and take some of our best practices back to Japan where we have 38 salons,” Van says.  The guests  spent  half the first day learning the Van Michael Performance Wheel, a list of services and practices  stylists use on every client at Van Michael. It’s the basic outline of the experience from beginning to end.  “We then discussed each point and why they are important to the client experience,” explains  Van. After that, Natalie Gurley and Jeffrey Goldenstein, Van Michael Director of Cut Education, demonstrated a few color and cutting techniques, and Johnny Plant demonstrated the Evolve volumizer hair piece.  “At the end of the day, the group dines together and shops. And shops and shops,” says Jay Pollard, Director of Operations. He and and Van’s assistant and Director of Recruiting, Jamie Shetler, organize the event and keep the students corralled and entertained.  “We have a blast--once the work and studying is done, of course,” says Shetler.

ACT,

SAT, ASAP

NEW CHANGES IN BOTH TESTS CREATE NEW QUESTIONS (AND ANSWERS) ABOUT WHICH ONE TO TAKE

ARTICLE TERESA SHELL, BESPOKE TUTORING | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s high school students settle into their new school year, many are beginning to take a more serious look at their future. Career choices, as well as the college majors that may lead to those careers, are typically top of mind. Meetings with college counselors, private educational consultants, and most likely, mom and dad, have been added to their ever-growing to-do list. But, before tailored studies at a university may begin, most students must overcome a major hurdle: the standardized test scores of the SAT or the ACT.  While some colleges no longer require an SAT or ACT score to be submitted during the application process, the majority of colleges and universities in the United States do, or, at the very least, list them on the application as optional. This hurdle leads students to the question: which test is their better test? For many years the SAT and ACT were preferred by students based on their geographical area and the schools to which they were applying. Now that most colleges accept either, the choice is left to the individual preference of the student.  But how to decide? The SAT, revamped significantly over the past year, has long held the reputation of being a great option for students with strengths in reading and writing. The ACT was often considered the best test for those 18

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | September 2016

students more inclined to math and science. Now, these reputations are not necessarily valid. The newly designed SAT, debuting this past March, includes cross-test scores in History/Social Studies and Science.  The exam focuses on four individual tests: one in Evidence-Based Reading, one in Writing and Language, and two in Math (only one permitting the use of a calculator), with science and history pieces incorporated throughout the exam. On the redesigned test, a student may be asked to examine the author's intent in a Nelson Mandela speech or decide whether a chart accurately reflects the results of a scientific experiment. The math test questions are designed to be similar to those a student may face in a future career such as maximizing profit or calculating sales tax. These more wellrounded test questions are designed to give a better indicator of a student's college readiness, but may also appeal to those math and science students who historically tended to prefer the ACT. With fewer recent changes, the ACT continues to use their fourtest approach, which includes one Reading test, one English test, one Math test, and one Science test. Like the SAT, outside knowledge of literature or specific science pieces is not required, but can be helpful. The ACT continues to emphasize grammar skills in its English

test, critical reading skills in the Reading test, and math problems more in line with those on a high school math test. The ACT's major change came last fall with the redesign of the Essay test. Previously an opinion or persuasive argument piece, the new ACT essay requires a student to read a prompt, analyze three perspectives, and discuss their own perspective in relation to the given perspectives. This essay style is often seen in more advanced high school literature classes and should appeal to those students adept at analyzing arguments. It will also provide colleges with a more direct representation of a student's understanding of standard written language conventions and his own writing ability.  Like the SAT, this test change makes the ACT a more attractive option for students typically inclined to stay away. Understanding the test differences between the SAT and ACT is imperative in deciding which test is best for your student. Only taking a mock version of each exam can give full insight into a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Mock exams, or practice tests, can be done online, on your own, or with a tutoring company.  Choosing the right test sets the tone for a student's college application process and builds confidence during this important time.

fter playing some of the most beautiful golf courses in his homeland of South Africa on the Sunshine tour and around his

American home in Buckhead, professional golfer Andrew Georgiou was inspired to share his love of the links and South Africa’s astounding wine country and the riveting wildlife and safari by launching his own company called Exclusive African Travel. This is a world class travel company that takes tour groups from right here in Atlanta to South Africa. These concierge-driven tours include high end accommodation, customized excursions and rounds of golf with professionals at some of the country’s most respected and picturesque courses. “I’ve been fortunate to play golf on some of the world’s most beautiful courses but my favorites are in South Africa. And, it’s not just because that’s where I grew up and where my heart remains,” said the 30-year old enthusiast. “After taking groups of friends from the United States to play golf and explore Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, they encouraged me to share my knowledge, golf connections and passion for the land with a wider audience.”  Georgiou speaks of the coastal city of Cape Town, and his two favorite wine districts, less than an hour’s drive away.  “The vineyards offer unparalleled beauty, world-class culinary experiences and of course, tastings of the region’s best reds and whites,” says Georgiou. “Cape Town is sophisticated, diverse and extremely cosmopolitan - it’s full of friendly and welcoming people who love their country and being outdoors!”  His enthusiasm is infectious for the mild climate, favorable exchange rate, positive American relations and the enjoyable cost of living, “holiday makers will get a big bang for their buck.” Georgiou has been traveling since he was 20, moving from his hometown of Cape Town to Columbus State University in Georgia to play golf on a full scholarship under his former high school coach, Mark Immelman, who continues to be a major influence today on Andrew’s career. The four-time All American turned pro in 2009 and has been a pro for seven years, playing on various tours. He has played with Ernie Els, Gary Player, Rory McIlroy and many other pros. He has played in the 2012 British Open Championship, the 2014 Canadian Open and numerous European/Canadian and Sunshine Tour events. He loves the USA and with his condo in Buckhead he returns to the states every year with dreams of making his way to the PGA Tour. This year Georgiou will play more than 25 events worldwide.

FALCONS' NEW STADIUM'S

True Cheerleader

O

ne particular Atlanta Falcons cheerleader shares a deeper connection with the team’s new home, Atlanta’s newest landmark, Mercedes Benz Stadium. Outside of boosting team spirit and dropping jaws, Brianna Stade spends time off the field working as a Project Administrative Assistant at Darden & Company LLC, the real estate project management company overseeing the development of the stadium. Brianna Stade is a Brookhaven resident and has cheered with the Atlanta Falcons for four years. She has been a part of the Mercedes Benz Stadium construction project since the first brick arrived on site. “It’s such an incredible building that brings a lot of excitement to the city of Atlanta,” she says. Brianna works alongside top leaders recruited to build our city’s world class stadium. Scott Jenkins, General Manager of Mercedes Benz Stadium, oversees much of the construction. Under Jenkins supervision is a retractable roof so grand that it requires the largest crane in the world for installation. Once completed, a 58-foot-high, 360-degree, high-definition halo board will complement the largest jumbotron in the world to be centered above the arena. The stadium will be equipped with the most advanced LED lighting that will illuminate the interior and exterior of the stadium so that the entire city knows when our team scores. Leaders developed innovative technology to eliminate poor service and grant fans free wifi. 24

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | September 2016

To top off the many improvements, our stadium will be one of the most eco-friendly superstructures in sports history. Rainwater collection facilities and solar panels that power electric vehicles outside the stadium will help reduce energy use by as much as 50 percent. The many upgrades are accompanied by the “Game Changing Experience.” The NFL’s Voice of the Fan Survey, as well as primary research within Atlanta and other markets conducted by the Falcons and Atlanta United, clearly indicates that food and beverage is the third-most important driver of game-day satisfaction. During a hard hat media tour, Arthur Blank said one of [his] core values is listening and responding. “I think what you’ll see today is long term response to food and beverage. Variety and value in pricing will make it easier for a family to enjoy their game experience.” Mike Gomes was recruited from Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts to help build the fan experience. As the Senior Vice President of the fan experience at AMB Sports and Entertainment Group, Mike focuses on reducing fans wait time by increasing the amount of locations for concession sales, adding self-service soda fountains, and incorporating whole dollar pricing.  Brianna is all for a total experience. “Where I live in Brookhaven there are so young professionals. Because the games and events are not in our neighborhood, the stadium provides a bigger reason to attend and be a part of the Atlanta community.”

FALCONS SEASON PREVIEW After missing the opportunity to make their second Super Bowl appearance by ten yards in 2012, the Atlanta Falcons have struggled to revisit that opportunity ever since. However, football analysts, avid loyalists, and the entire Falcons staff collectively believe the future will entail the franchise will “rise up” due to some significant player acquisitions, hopefully a stingier defense, and the motivation to enter their highly anticipated new home in 2017—the Mercedes-Benz Stadium—flaunting Super Bowl rings. The Falcons have one of the most dominant receivers in NFL history in Julio Jones, and he needs to get the ball as much as possible. However, last year’s underwhelming play of field general Matt Ryan— accredited to numerous dropped passes and ultimately the void of another potent receiving threat to limit defenses from double-teaming Jones—hindered the team last year. However, this season’s additions of former Cincinnati Bengal Mohamed Sanu and rookie Tight End Austin Hooper out of Stanford aim to provide some relief for Jones. Underrated Right Tackle Ryan Schraeder, Left Tackle Jake Matthews, and the offensive line will get some welcomed help from the solid Center Alex Mack acquired from the Cleveland Browns as well; this protection will give Ryan extra time to find his targets and provide big holes for the shifty rising star, Running Back Devonta Freeman. The talented, yet slightly disappointing backup Running Back Tevin Coleman promises to have a better season holding on to the ball in 2016 also.  The defense, led by ball All-Pro Cornerback Desmond Trufant, will receive much-needed reinforcements thanks to numerous enhancements during the offseason. Besides developing the existing front line who raised some eyebrows last year, rookies De’Vondre Campbell out of Minnesota and LSU’s Deion Jones should upgrade the linebacker corps. Addressing help for Trufant, Defensive Back Robert Alford should build off an impressive 2015 season, and Cornerback Jalen Collins will provide an extra boost once serving a four-game suspension for violating the League’s PED policy. -Dennis Malcolm Byron

Coaching and Kids For Kennedy 28

Coach's loves, off the court

L

iz Kennedy, Lovett’s head girl’s basketball coach has a contagious smile. It’s hard to talk with her and not be cheered. For 11 years, she has taken the Lovett girls team places they never thought they could go. Two of her students are competing on the U.S.A. national team in Spain this year, one previous student and one a current rising junior, Jenna Brown. When you meet Kennedy she all business, but her spirit and warmth shine when she talks about her loves: family, basketball, Lovett, and especially her basketball family. She grew up in upstate New York, attended college in Pennsylvania and was hired as an assistant coach at the college level after graduating. When Lovett reached out to her 11 years ago, she was ecstatic to move to Atlanta.  Little did she know, a few short years later she would meet her life partner Miki who is also softball coach.  They balance coaching and family, raising two young children with ease. Having brought home Lovett’s first ever Basketball State Championship in 2012, Kennedy is proud that it was the girls that won the impressive title. “The kids put in the work, the coaches put in the work, we all put in the work,” she says, crediting the players first. Always.

Please join us in the mission of raising funds for pediatric cancer research, promoting awareness and family support to benefit our 2016 charity partner, CURE Childhood Cancer.    Polo in the Pines invites “Big Thinkers”, entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, medical advisors and supporters to connect for the cause as we plant the seeds for productive collaboration with global participation.   We welcome our community to invest and invite friends as we build this signature event together.   Polo in the Pines is a grass roots event created in 2012 by founder Tina Fowler to honor her mother Sharon Knight, now a 27 year survivor of leiomyosarcoma cancer.   The heart of Polo in the Pines is about sharing our personal journeys to help others.  Sharon Knight said “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into something positive.  It has been an opportunity for growth.  Growth is not always about getting what we want, but it is about being conformed to the image of Christ in which we become the men and women we have the potential to be.”

Polo in the Pines is excited to share with you the inspirational stories of Matthew Willis and Lacey Johnson Wilkinson.   In the 8th grade, Matthew Willis was 13 years old when he was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer.   This incredible journey captured our hearts to share this inspiring with you.   Polo in the Pines 2013 keynote speaker Lynne Dale Williams, Team Summer, introduced us to our next 2016 honoree Lacey Johnson Wilkinson.  Lacey was 20 years old when she met Lynne’s daughter Summer Dale in 2012.   The two of them shared a special bond as they both battled pediatric sarcoma cancer.   They became best friends in the brief year they had together before Summer died but the legacy of giving continues to inspire others though Lacey’s dedication to Team Summer.  Polo in the Pines welcomes back St. Regis Atlanta as our luxury hotel partner for a weekend getaway.    We are gearing up for an exhilarating weekend to entertain guest with polo, upscale southern cuisine and gracious hospitality.    We will continue the tradition of Champagne Saboring & Stomping the Divots with St. Regis Atlanta.

Parting Thoughts

RIDE A BIKE IN

A NEW WAY

I

magine riding a bike with no brakes and no gears on a track with a 36 degree banking. Sound thrilling? That's Track cycling--a form of

cycling based on speed, tactics and strength, and you can learn to do it here in Atlanta at the Dick Lane Velodrome. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point is one of only 22 active velodromes in the country but ironically this is not the track that was used in the ‘96 Olympics. Cyclists have been racing at this velodrome since a group of East Point residents were inspired by  a visit to the Munich Olympics in 1972 and built the track shortly after. While it does take a certain amount of bike experience to cycle on the track, the velodrome offers beginner classes for both adults and kids that provide you with the fundamentals of riding the track, safe riding techniques and toward the end of the clinic, advanced bike handling. The velodrome even provides you with the special track bike- one without brakes and gears. If you're scared to not be able to grip the brakes, take it from track manager Rob Evans.  “I consider track cycling one of the safest forms of cycling, taking place on a car-free track," said Evans. "While the lack of brakes might seem daunting at first, it's usually brakes on road bicycles that cause most of the crashes. You'll use your own leg strength to slow yourself down just like you speed up." The last two beginners classes of the season are two-day weekend courses on September 17-18 and October 7 and 8. Courses are $60 and include a loaner bike.   Once you complete the beginner’s class, you are ready to start riding and training or even racing on the track. The Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point holds races weekly from March through October, giving you plenty of time to master the track before the 2017 season. Send us photos of your adventure!

You’ve seen this leather sectional in high-end catalogs for $16,000. No wonder. It’s 8-way hand-tied with marshall coil seating wrapped in genuine goose down and tailored in fully aniline dyed Brompton leather. An exclusive hot wax tannery technique highlights the natural character of the leather to become more beautiful with age. So why is it a third of the price at The Dump? Because we had it made by America’s most respected craftsman, to the same quality specifications…ONLY without the famous label & you save a full 63%.
