Home Is Where the Heart Is

James Jordan

THE CONCEPT OF HOME IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE. For some, home is where the family is. It’s the place where weekends were— or still are—filled with baby snuggles, bedtime stories and Saturday morning cartoons. The place where the smell of bacon and pancakes fills the air on Sunday mornings, "do your homework before you go outside" is a daily mantra and unsnoozable slobbery dog kisses take the place of your morning alarm. For others, home is where the rest is. It’s the place where, after a long day, they go to relax. Where they spend meaningful time with their significant other, enjoy home-cooked meals and settle in on a comfy couch to catch up on the week's latest guilty pleasure TV shows.

For some, home is where the work is. It's where they build their dreams, where they start their businesses and where they work day in and day out for success.

And for us here at Brentwood Lifestyle, home is where the heart is—it's where we get to share meaningful stories with all of you. Whatever your home may be, we hope you find a piece of it here in this month's issue.

USING THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB Getting your building or remodeling project done right requires the right tools and having the right vehicle can be one of most important. There are few feelings in life more frustrating than finding yourself in the middle of a project without the right tools to complete the job. Having the right vehicle is no different. Sheets of plywood strapped to the back of a convertible isn’t the safest bet. But no need to fret, Toyota has your back. Toyota builds cars and trucks for how you live and work, and the Tundra is the perfect fit for both the seasoned contractor or do-it-yourselfer. The Tundra delivers the durability and toughness you expect, combined with fuel efficiency and innovative safety features. It provides standard features like the largest fuel tank in its class, largest front brakes in its class and the ability to tow up to 10,200 lbs. Just point us to the next job site. The Tundra offers two powerful i-FORCE engines to choose from—a brawny 5.7L V8 or an efficient 4.6L V8 and both feature Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to optimize engine breathing for maximum power and efficiency.

And, let’s not forget about safety. A hardhat is always a great idea, but the Tundra takes safety to a whole new level. Toyota Safety SenseTM P (TSS-P) is an active safety package that comes standard on every new Toyota Tundra. This advanced precautionary safety system combines the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS W/PD), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Sway Warning System (SWS), Automatic High Beams (AHB) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) to assist you. Taking on a project that requires a tow? When properly equipped, Tundra has a payload capacity of up to 1730 lbs., plus an available deck rail system and an easy lower and lift tailgate, to make these projects a little easier to tackle. Some say loading, unloading, hauling and towing a ton of lumber, gear and supplies is a ton of work. Tundra owners have another word for it: Saturday.

Outdoor Living in Brentwood Trending now is extending the interior of your home, to a beautiful, comfortable, fully featured outdoor livable space with staples (like your indoor) such as a cooking area, a bar area, a dining area, a relaxing area, and perhaps an area for kids. When planning for an outdoor living room, there are several considerations on the front end that will be helpful to keep in mind for the successful completion of the project.

LOCAL: The first consideration for a new outdoor space is seeking out local experts who have hands-on knowledge of products, ideas and implementation. While online websites can give quick snap shot images, the local expert can insert experienced information into a project, while providing technical assistance, and also being a local resource for insight when needed. OUTDOOR KITCHENS & OUTDOOR BAR AREAS: Knowing the area footprint you have to work within, outdoor appliances you are interested in, and a budget you are wanting to stay within, will assist in the design/layout aspect of your outdoor kitchen/bar areas. Also, understanding how the space will be used is helpful in the design/plan phase. For instance, are you only cooking for two, or will you use your space to entertain and host others? Determining the direction of your outdoor kitchen/bar, seating area, ventilation, and other elements will help in the process of designing an outdoor kitchen/bar that will work best for both function and flow. OUTDOOR HEATERS: The overall climate in Brentwood allows for outdoor living pretty much year around. The addition of outdoor heaters (either gas or electric) in an outdoor living space will extend that period even more. When planning for your new screened in porch or open patio, consider electrical and gas lines that may need to be run for these, as it is usually easier and more cost effective to do those extentions on the front end versus at a later time. OUTDOOR FURNITURE: Seating around the fire pit such as adirondack chairs, farm house style dining tables, benches, swings, bar height chairs for outdoor kitchen/bar areas, should all be in the conversation for outdoor furniture. Understanding both the application of furniture and the location of the furniture is paramount for design/layout and materials. Furniture that is completely exposed to outdoor elements year-around versus pieces that are placed in a more covered and secured environment are things to consider when buying a certain style or the materials from which the furniture is made. OUTDOOR FIRE PITS & FIRE TABLES: Great conversations and memories are often created around the backyard fire pit. A gas burning fire pit or fire table can provide the easy convenience of startup, nice flame, along with an area to set a glass down (or use as a chat table when not in use as fire pit). Stone fire pits can have a gas starter for wood, or a gas burner added (with a proper gas line ran to accommodate the amount of BTU’s) with a finish material of volcanic stone, glass or gems that are all fire rated. OUTDOOR FIREPLACES: Traditional wood burning outdoor fireplaces with a gas starter, or vented gas logs continue to be popular choices for outdoor living areas; however, modern linear outdoor fireplaces with fire glass or gems with zero clearance for shiplap applications are also now trending as they give a unique style and look to an outdoor living area.
