AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Brentwood Lifestyle in 2018! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year!

Pods of bottlenose dolphins, mere feet from the paddle’s tip, break the glassy surface of the water, gulping in fresh sea air before diving back to a bountiful breakfast among pristine stands of Spartina, the omnipresent salt marsh

cordgrass that anchors the thriving web of life of this very special place. As the sun rises, the shore resolves into a liv-

Yet, just beyond the treeline where the pluff mud meets the bluff, evolves a growing vision of a truly elevated guest experience, Montage’s Palmetto Bluff, elegantly reconciling what is sustainable with what is sophisticated. Hiking trails wind throughout Palmetto Bluff’s extensive forest with thousands of acres set aside as nature preserve and cared for by the resort’s own nonprofit conservancy. In Wilson and Moreland Villages, the two year-round and vibrant communities contained entirely on the property, residents and guests may enjoy such amenities as tennis courts and swimming pools, restaurants and shops, and a state-of-the-art spa of absolute pure bliss. For golfers, there is a Jack Nicklaus Signature par-72 set along 7,200 yards of scenic waterfront, a course noted for its ecologically aware best practices and one consistently ranked among the top five in a state known for its worldclass links. For kids, there are remarkable treehouses and swing sets and a basketball court and a bowling alley and the fact that they can easily and safely ride bikes on the clear and clean paths connecting it all to explore for themselves. And, speaking of exploring, Palmetto Bluff is ideally situated for day trips to nearby Savannah and Charleston. Even closer lie the famous beaches of Hilton Head Island and the sights and shops and restaurants of historic Bluffton, South Carolina. For visitors, there are a number of lodging options from which to choose, from charming rooms at the gorgeous inn and chic guest cottages to entire majestic homes that owners may choose to rent through Palmetto Bluff’s real estate service. Regardless of where you stay, expect impeccable service and genuine hospitality from the friendly staff because that is what you will receive. But be forewarned, dear reader, while getting there from here is easy and staying is truly sublime, leaving will be very difficult indeed. Good thing then that even a short visit to this enchanting place will fill you with fond memories and great stories to last a lifetime.

"THE BEST WAY WE CAN PROTECT OUR CLIENTS FROM RISK IS TO THINK." Although Tim was successful, it didn’t take too long before he became disenchanted with the approaches and practices of traditional financial management firms. “Wall Street makes the investment process seem mysterious, like the curtain in The Wizard of Oz. The more complex it appears, the more they can charge,” Tim says. “In reality, it’s not that complicated.” Along the way, Tim has also become a champion for transparency and client disclosure in financial advising. “We designed a reporting system that fully discloses our fees, line item by line item,” he

says. “We brought institutional sophistication to individual investors.” Tim also has become an outspoken advocate

Tim Pagliara at work in his Franklin office

for truth and fairness in the investment industry. “At times, there has been an absence of ethical focus in the industry,” he says. “At CapWealth, we’ve unmasked that. We developed two philosophies— provable integrity and sophisticated simplicity— that undergird all of our investment practices.” In a career filled with achievements, Tim is most proud of his firm’s ability to defy conventional wisdom. His “think outside the box” approach was most evident during the tech bubble of 1999 and the financial crisis of 2008. During both events, Tim advised clients to pursue strategies that were at odds with many other investment advisers. The results?  CapWealth clients endured the crises well, with their portfolios well-positioned to take advantage of today’s market environment. “You have to have a strategy that you believe in," Tim says. "You will live or die by it.” As we approach the end of 2018, Tim has one bit of advice for investors. “Don’t procrastinate. It's  nearly impossible to meet with your accountant, attorney or financial adviser at year-end. The best time to contact them is between Thanksgiving and the 20th of December,” Tim says. “You need to have your financial house in order before making your final tax payment in January.”   December 2018 | Brentwood Lifestyle

W I NTER’S R E VEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE

FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-theyear gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

1

TH E D R INK S

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail

2

THE D ECOR There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses

3

(We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER

THE SNACKS

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation.

42

Brentwood Lifestyle | December 2018

Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!
