THE GIVING PLATE AWARDED GRANT TO SUPPORT BACKPACKS FOR BEND The Giving Plate received a $30,000 grant from Central Oregon Health Council to help cover food and program costs for its emergency weekend food-relief program Backpacks for Bend. In 2018/19, the program supported 450 K-12 students in 28 Bend-La Pine schools with weekend food sacks, ensuring that no child had to face a weekend of hunger. The grant funding will help provide 6,300 weekend food bags for children and help cover some of the expenses for the 2019-2020 school year. “We are incredibly grateful for Central Oregon Health Council’s partnership in the fight

ARTIST’S PALETTE

“BEING IN DEEP PIECES OF EARTH IS VERY POWERFUL, LIKE BEING IN THE HEART OF THE WORLD.” —DAVID KINKER

DAVID KINKER: AN ARTIST'S FLOW PAINTINGS REFLECT LIFE AND A RELATIONSHIP TO NATURE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL PARTON

14

Bend Lifestyle | June 2019

AS AN ARTIST, DAVID KINKER DOESN’T SEPARATE A LIFE OF REFLECTION FROM THE REFLECTIONS OF WATER IN HIS PAINTINGS. At first glance, the landscapes are representational of the rivers David visits as a naturalist and interpretive river guide. Yet, while painting is a record of his experiences it’s also a record of what he refers to as a special relationship with the “benevolent power of water.” Look closer at the large-scale paintings and the smallest brush strokes transcend place to mimic the light, shadow and shapes that create not only the subject on canvas but represent the way geologic time is expressed along the walls of a canyon. “The scale in a canyon is very humbling,” he says. David grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and in rural Arizona where he began drawing and painting as a young boy, starting with natural subjects such as the patterns and colors of birds. With a degree in visual communications and talents as an art instructor, CONTINUED >

David is also known for his mural work seen throughout Central Oregon: at the Tower Theatre, breweries, restaurants and nonprofits. Yet on his business card, next to fine artist it also says, “Turbulent Hydrology Specialist,” to reflect his river guide expertise. David has a special reverence for running the rivers found at the base of the oldest and deepest canyons in the world, including those in Peru, Ecuador and in the Grand Canyon. Each trip allows the appreciation for the history, geology, archeology and natural history of each area that is only understood from the bottom of a gorge versus looking down from above. And that is where his artist’s eye synthesizes what he sees and what he experiences, “Being in deep pieces of earth is very powerful, like being in the heart of the world.” Kinker.com, TumaloArtCo.com

The Key to Unlocking Back Pain Low back pain is a significant problem in the US, affecting approximately 80 percent of adults at some point in their lives. It has a significant impact on health and overall quality of life. While well known and commonly treated, many back pain sufferers are unable to find complete relief from their pain. Pelvic floor dysfunction is associated with the development of low back pain in both men and women. If left untreated, full relief is often delayed or not possible. How are the Pelvic Floor and Back Connected? The foundation of the back begins at the tailbone. Your core consists of your back muscles, glutes, abdominal muscles, hip muscles, and pelvic floor. The pelvic floor muscles are similar to a sling, supporting the bladder, rectum and other organs in the pelvis. What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction? Pelvic floor dysfunction is the inability to tighten and relax the muscles in the pelvic floor, which can lead to fecal and urinary incontinence. While less common in men, pelvic floor dysfunction is a reality for many and is treatable, often without medication or surgery. How Does Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Happen? Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur as a result of surgery, trauma, heavy lifting and straining, pelvic radiation, obesity, congenitally weak connective tissue, and aging. In women, childbirth can also create weakness.

Properly Treating Low Back Pain Standard treatments for low back pain include strengthening exercises and stretches. However, for some, this isn’t enough. If you have received treatment for low back pain, but it didn’t provide lasting relief to your symptoms, pelvic floor strengthening may do the trick. Learning how to keep the pelvic floor engaged builds strength, which allows the body to learn to use these muscles correctly. There are specific exercises and ways to move the body to build pelvic strength, which can help relieve low back pain. The more you know, the more you can help yourself and those around you. Pelvic floor retraining can be highly beneficial for people with low back pain, fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence and following a prostatectomy. If you or someone you know has chronic low back pain, it may be time to determine if pelvic floor dysfunction is an underlying problem. Schedule an appointment with a urologist for answers. 1

IF THE ANCESTRAL LINE FROM 100 YEARS AGO COULD SEE EZRA AND KRISTEN ROSS’ RESTORED 1920S FARMHOUSE, THEY’D BE DELIGHTED TO SEE A HOME WITH A NEW SET OF LUNGS INSIDE ITS ORIGINAL BONES. Bend craftsman, Ezra Ross, owner of Ross Built Homes, completed his personal home project three years in the making early 2019. The smallest to the largest of details were considered—antique doors, reclaimed 90-year-old door hardware, a claw foot tub, a slab wood custom-made kitchen island by Ross, and a 1930s Franklin wood stove in the living room. NATURAL HEALING, ONE DROP AT A TIME

WHILE

HAS

BEEN

TRADITIONALLY

THOUGHT OF AS A PRACTICE FOR WOMEN ONLY, THE ESSENTIAL OIL INDUSTRY HAS SEEN AN INCREASE IN THE USE OF MORE NATURAL PRODUCTS AND PURE ESSENTIAL OILS BY MEN OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS. In general, essential oils are gender-neutral with most of the fragrances appealing equally to both sexes. However certain woodsy, spicy and citrusy blends are more appealing to men because of their distinct masculine scents. Whether the essential oil is being used as a fragrance, a topical skin ointment or to enhance a spa treatment—everyone’s preferences are different. The best attribute about essential oils is that they can be used alone or combined with other oils and products in many different ways and the benefits are endless. 28

The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. Refreshing Mojito THE CUBAN CLASSIC SIGNALS SUMMER IS ON ITS WAY

ARTICLE CHERYL PARTON PHOTOGRAPHY JENNIFER SCHMIDT

A CUBAN CLASSIC, THE MOJITO IS A REFRESHING MIX OF RUM, MINT AND LIME JUICE WITH A BUBBLY FINISH. Its sweet  herbaceousness equals  summer in a sip. Mixologist Sanda Costello, co-owner of both Bowtie Catering and The Citizen Bar & Kitchen, enjoys creating new cocktails based on classic recipes by using fresh ingredients. Similar to the way she approaches building a rotating menu at The Citizen by adding European flair and seasonal ingredients to create dynamic dishes, Sanda is

mindful of layering tastes in her drinks. Her tip for building

++ 10 large mint leaves

the best cocktail is to mind the order of the pour. First, start

++ 1 sugar cube (or blue agave nectar)

strong with your base spirit, then add enhancers—a dash

++ 2 1/2 ounces barrel-aged rum

of a secondary liquor. Mixers, such as sweet or sour juices

++ 1 tablespoon lime juice

come next. Finally, comes the "topper" of soda, Champagne

++ Soda water

or other splashes of effervescence.  "We, for the most part,

++ Fresh mint and sliced

work with classics but add a twist like infusing or smoking

the alcohol," says Sanda. "On a warm summer night, I add

Muddle mint, add next ingredients, top

raspberries." CitizenRestaurantBend.com

with soda water and enjoy!
