FACES OF THE COMMUNITY

Before you read this, take off all your clothes. Now look in the mirror for signs of melanoma/skin cancer. Notice any changes in the shape or color of your moles or freckles? Do you have any new blemishes that are larger than 1/4-inch, varied in color, irregular or asymmetrical in shape? If so, you may have melanoma or another form of skin cancer and you should see a dermatologist. Left alone, melanoma will spread throughout your body and eventually kill you. Melanoma can be successfully cured if caught early. Okay, you can put your clothes back on now.

WHILE WORKING ON THIS WOMEN’S ISSUE, I REFLECTED ON HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR ALL THE WOMEN IN MY LIFE—MY DAUGHTER, MY SISTERS, MY FRIENDS, AND MY FEMALE FAMILY MEMBERS. The photo shown here was taken at a very sad time, but the strength of family got us through and brought smiles to our faces. Where would we be without the women in our lives? It is that strength and female bond that is the focus of this issue. Read the following pages to get a glimpse of what women are up to here in Bend. Discover Gather in Bend, where we come together for enrichment, connection and authentic experiences. Meet six local women who share their perspectives on what it means to be part of our community. CREATING A BEAUTIFUL HOME ARTICLE KELSEY CLASPELL PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL PARTON

Stephanie Ray Peters

STEPHANIE RAY PETERS HAS INTERIOR DESIGN IN HER BLOOD. Her grandfather started his construction company in 1960 and developed residential communities where her mother worked as decorator for his model homes. As she grew up, Stephanie inherited her family’s passion for design and it led her to start her own company, Staging Interiors Today (SIT). As a female business owner, Stephanie has experienced hurdles and triumphs. She encourages women to celebrate their creativity and follow their dreams. “The most rewarding part for me is being able to create spaces that people fall in love with,” says Peters. “It makes me so happy when my clients are over-the-moon excited about their homes. I love being able to bring people’s visions to life.” How does the process of designing a home start? The first step is to look at the details of the space. “I can always tell what style I’m going to lean toward by the way the home was built and what details pop,” Peters says. Then, she works to highlight the home’s most unique and desirable areas to bring out its natural beauty. CONTINUED >

Getting Back to Normal

After Breast Cancer Surgery The perception of what is normal versus what isn’t is entirely dependent on circumstance and life experience. Normal after breast cancer surgery means different things to different people and is often based on recovery and outcome.

Julie had a mastectomy and reconstruction of her right breast, and while her doctor told her that she had a full range of motion in her shoulder, she felt tightness. Julie had cording, which causes thick, rope-like structures to develop under the skin of the inner arm.

Complications from breast cancer surgery are often overshadowed by survivability. Rather than receiving a post-surgical plan of care to minimize complications, women are often left to blindly feel their way through recovery.

“As a physical therapy assistant, I had a heightened awareness of what could happen if I wasn’t proactive,” Julie said. “I knew cupping would be the final piece of getting me to my new normal.”

“For years, the medical opinion has often been that the removal of a woman’s breast would be as simple as removing unwanted flesh,” said Shanette Menegus, Physical Therapist at Step & Spine Physical Therapy. “However, scar tissue and other complications do happen and women need to be aware of their rehabilitation options.”

Bend resident, Maureen had a double mastectomy in 2011. A competitive swim coach, Maureen was in-tune with her body and knew something wasn’t right. She had lymphedema, a common condition that causes significant swelling and limits motion. Despite regular pool exercises and other treatments, it never fully went away.

Many women are not aware that exercise, specifically physical therapy, often bridges the gap between surgery and recovery.

“I was pretty proactive about my postoperative care and saw the right people to help me heal,” said Maureen. “I went to Shanette for cupping. I had a rib that was out of place because of the swelling, but Shannette was able to get in there and fix things. I now do cupping at home as needed.”

They don’t understand the importance of exercise for improving mobility. Women accept problems as part of their new normal. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Knowledge is the decisive factor when it comes to recovery. Two local women took a proactive stance in their breast cancer surgery recovery, which improved their outcome.

Regardless which procedure is performed, exercise is an integral part of recovery and vital for regaining arm and shoulder mobility. In time, physical therapy after breast cancer surgery will become the standard of care. Until then, it is crucial for patients to speak up and ask questions. Breast cancer surgery should be a positive step towards a lifetime of better health. Physical therapy can help pave the way towards this transition.

WOMEN CREATE COMMUNITY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JOSHUA LANGLAIS

t h e s c h o o l c o u n s e l o r Megan Pettibone WHAT DO YOU WISH FOR THE FUTURE? “For myself, for our town, to continue to seek opportunities for growth and for greater understanding and for coming together and feeling invested in something bigger than myself. And right now, it exists in this capacity of being able to contribute to the education of these wonderful children and showing them how important our community is and what we can do (for) the greater community. The spirit of contributing to beauty greater than ourselves is what I'd like to see for myself and for everybody.

WHAT DO YOU WISH FOR THE FUTURE? “This is cliché, but it's true—I wish for peace and I wish for higher consciousness. And I wish for evolution, growth, and awareness. And I wish that we continue to evolve as a species but come back to our roots as indigenous people because we all are indigenous people from somewhere, right? I would love for us all to live closer to the earth in a more sustainable way so that we can succeed as a species. That's pretty much it!” CONTINUED >

Spring Olson HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY? “I started the Central Oregon Seed Exchange, so I have a lot of networks with farmers. I saw there was a seed shortage in Deschutes County. I have access to free seed—I started asking local farmers to donate their locally grown, cold-climate, organic seed. I’ll give it away for free to enforce that old style of living where you grow your own food, you get the kids involved, you get them outside and engaged with their community and family again.”

Libby Nierman WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT BEND? “I try to raise two conscious, thoughtful, little people in the world that are cognizant of their choices and how they impact others. (In) the work that I do in the world—I do massage therapy—I found myself enjoying it the most because I think that if each person felt a little bit better in their body and more comfortable, how much kinder they are to themselves and then, in turn, to the rest of the people they encounter.”

20

Bend Lifestyle | May 2018

Sasha Lawless WHO ARE YOU? “I'm really good at networking. I know a lot of people. I can get along with a lot of different people. Something that I've seen in Bend is that you have a ton of amazing groups, like over 400 nonprofits, but not everyone's on the same page. Something that I like to do is find out who I can connect and network 'em and that's just a big part of who I am. That's also part of what kind of legacy I want to leave for my children—helping develop the community and make an impact that's positive.”

Donna Noyes “I've visited 87 countries. And I'm going to Sri Lanka. I thought if I took one trip a year that would satisfy me. But I got up to three big trips a year. I always have a good time, but it's always because of the people I met. You can ask me a country and I can tell you story.”

WHEN SEARCHING FOR ADVENTURE WITH GIRLFRIENDS, THERE’S NO NEED TO TRAVEL FAR WITH GATHER IN BEND. Founded in 2015 by Jill Rose and Kelli Singer, Gather’s goal is to provide experiences and spaces to cultivate connections among women. Gather events are curated to encourage the growth Rose and Singer believe occurs when women share their worlds. “When we leave competition at the door, we lift each other up,” says Rose. “This is where the magic happens.”  Each Gathering is inspired by themes which in the past have included art,
