WHAT ARE THE FIRST THINGS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN

G Ot ta h ave he art

YOU THINK OF FEBRUARY? More likely than not, your answer probably includes expressions of love, candy hearts, cupid, and various shades of red. While Valentine’s Day certainly is a major theme of the month, many don’t know that February is also American Heart Month. The American Heart Association dedicates this month to heart health and sets a goal of raising awareness of maintaining a heart-healthy life. The importance of staying in tune with your body and knowing the risks leading to heart disease—the #1 cause of death for both women and men in America—cannot be understated. While heart health awareness is important for everyone, the American Heart Association focuses on women during this month because the symptoms for heart disease in women sometimes show themselves more subtly. They include stomach, back, and/or neck pain, shortness of breath, and nausea. These hidden symptoms can cause women to brush off these signals, attributing their discomfort to stress or anxiety.

FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH

Cardiologists like Bend’s own Dr. Courtney Virgilio want you to know that maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle, and staying in tune with your body—especially for women—is hugely important in living the most healthy and happy life you can. As a cardiologist at Summit Medical Group of Oregon Bend Memorial Clinic, Dr. Virgilio is well-versed in heart health; being board certified in cardiology, echocardiography, internal medicine, nuclear cardiology, and vascular medicine. Dr. Virgilio is passionate about her patients and preventing diseases. “It’s so important to listen to your body! As a woman, you have to take care of yourself before you take care of anyone else.”  Although the risks can be more hidden in women, she stresses that everyone should be in tune with their heart health regardless of your age, sex, or family history. GO RED FOR WOMEN In collaboration with American Heart Month, the American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” campaign holds a National Wear Red Day on the first Friday of February—February 2 this year. By wearing red, you’re participating in spreading heart health education and importance to all. According to the American Heart Association, 80% of cardiac events may be prevented with education and action. Starting the conversation is a big step in preventing heart disease, and wearing red on this day is a great way to be a part of it. February is a time to express love and show the special people in your life you cherish them. Take a moment to close your eyes and think about your loved ones; the warm memories you hold, the laughs you’ve shared, the bear hugs you’ve exchanged after seeing an old friend for the first time in years. When it all comes down to it, what we cherish the most about these special people are their lives. The lives that are kept full of love by a healthy, beating heart. This February, don’t hold back on the hugs, and don’t hold back on stay-

Dr. Courtney Virgilio

A H e artHe alt hy L i f e In speaking with her about the best ways for women to lead a hearthealthy life, Dr. Virgilio happily provided some great tips to follow: + Find a physician you trust and are comfortable with, and go through the heart disease risks with them. This is important to do even if you don’t suspect that you have any heart issues. Since symptoms can be silent, focusing on preventative care with your doctor’s help is key. + Keep tabs on your cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and get screened for diabetes. + Sleep apnea has been linked to heart disease. If this is something that you suffer from, talk to you doctor about it in connection with monitoring your heart health. + Stay away from smoking, and drink in moderation. For women, this means one drink at most a day. + Exercise regularly to keep your

Don’t worry, no fruit was harmed in the making of this beer. Deschutes Brewery is proud to be family and employee-owned. They are dedicated to their core values and live them every day by honoring the customers, delivering quality, working as a team, doing their best and next time doing it better, building a healthier society, celebrating the culture of beer, and owning it! BEST BREWERY

Deschutes Brewery 1044 NW Bond Street, Bend Tasting Room: 901 SW Simpson Avenue, Bend 541.382.9242 DeschutesBrewery.com The original Public House has been a vibrant fixture of the downtown Bend scene since 1988. Not only were their very first beers brewed here—think Black Butte Porter and Jubelale—but they quickly became a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. While the beer speaks for itself through a total of 19 taps, their chefs also put the same quality and hand-crafted excellence into the cuisine. The beer-centric menu features fresh ingredients, many sourced from local farmers, foragers and ranchers with whom the team has built strong relationships over the years. Most menu items are hand-crafted from scratch whenever possible, and several items are made with spent grain from the brewing process.   Deschutes Brewery overlooks the wild and scenic Deschutes River in beautiful Bend, home base to their adventurous, award-winning lineup of pioneering beers. You’re welcome to drop in, sample their beers, and meet the beer-obsessed folks who tend them.

ROMANCE IN THE SNOW SHOW YOUR LOVED ONE YOU CARE WITH AN ADVENTUROUS VALENTINE’S DAY!

WINTER IN A QUIET MOUNTAIN TOWN CAN BE A MAGICAL TIME. Woodsmoke wafts out the chimneys and fills the air, while soft, white snowflakes dance through the pines, landing ever so gently on the ground. The picturesque backdrop overflows with romance as loved ones huddle by the fire for warmth and simply to be with the ones they love. In Bend’s Drake Park, couples stroll by, wrapped in each other's arms. This Valentine’s Day, forgo the traditional dinner and a movie, and head outside to the true beauty Central Oregon has to offer. Get creative with your sweetie and enjoy a rewarding local adventure. Try one of these events and make this February a month to remember . . . but don’t skip the chocolates. MOONLIGHT SKI TO PAULINA LAKE LODGE Every year the Central Oregon Nordic Club hosts a meet up in February during the full moon to ski and snowshoe to Paulina Lake Lodge. Grab your sweetheart—and the headlamps—and gallivant towards the volcano’s crater. Hold your partner's hand as you trek through forest tranquility at night. Enjoy both sports and choose to snowshoe up and ski down. When you arrive at the destination, Paulina Lake Lodge, make a toast to your fellow moonlighters on your adventure and enjoy a comforting meal together. The excursion is a seven mile round trip. There is a $10 corkage fee if you travel with wine. The group meets beforehand and carpools to the starting point together. If you can’t wait for Valentine’s Day for your night out, head to Virginia Meissner Sno-Park on February

STAY AT THE SUTTLE LODGE AND SNOWSHOE AROUND SUTTLE LAKE Enjoy Suttle Lake’s wintertime solitude with your loved one. A quick drive west of Sisters lands you in a winter wonderland, complete with an iced-over lake encircled by thick ponderosas. Maintaining a rustic appeal, the shoreline has but one manmade object, the campy Suttle Lodge. Don’t mistake it for an outdated resort, however, the recent renovation of the historic Lodge maintains a woodsy charm while providing luxury comfort. For accommodations, rent a cabin or stay in the recently renovated lodge. Their hip bar, named “Skip,” serves complex cocktails and gastronomic delights. The menu—curated by renowned Chef Joshua McFadden— features comforting dishes like toasted cracker crust pizzas, fish and chips as a sandwich, and fried delicate donuts. Get out and play in the snow, they’ll provide the snowshoes and hot cocoa (or signature infused-hot toddy). Stay warm by the fire at night and in the morning fix a french press for your sweetheart before hitting the lakeloop-trail for a sunrise ski or snowshoe. When a community gets access to clean water, it can change just about everything. It can improve health, increase access to food, grow local economies, and help kids spend more time in school.

Before you read this, take off all your clothes. Now look in the mirror for signs of melanoma/skin cancer. Notice any changes in the shape or color of your moles or freckles? Do you have any new blemishes that are larger than 1/4-inch, varied in color, irregular or asymmetrical in shape? If so, you may have melanoma or another form of skin cancer and you should see a dermatologist. Left alone, melanoma will spread throughout your body and eventually kill you. Melanoma can be successfully cured if caught early. Okay, you can put your clothes back on now.
